Cooling fan quit working

iBook G4 10.4.11
System is getting hot and fan doesn't engage.....
Suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Hmm.
If the computer isn't shutting off, then it's fine overall; if a temperature threshold is reached, the computer will shut down to save itself.
So, you've got basically 2 options.
1) Replace the fan yourself, following the instructions here:http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iBook-G4-14-Inch-1-42-GHz-Fan/725/ 1 (they're basically the same for all the iBooks, but you'd want to grab the guide for your specific machine)
2) Place the computer on a hard-cover book or laptop stand on your lap
3) Invest in an external cooling pad.
I opted for the third option, and my iBook runs cooler than it ever has before.

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
    Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

  • PresarioCQ62 wont come on no lights, sounds, zip. fan quit working few week be4 mite help answer?

My Compaq presario CQ62 219 WM does not come on, no lights sounds nothing, the fan quit working a while back but it would auto shut down at 92 deg. occasionally, so it didn't run hot very often at all. Then one day the screen just went black with a cursor at the top left corner and wouldn't do anything, wouldn't let me turn it off or on, nothing at all and I had to let the battery die and now it don't do anything. The power cord works fine for another HP laptop I have, I have switched the hard drive and ram sticks and it didn't change anything, not even the power light that is supposed to be on at all times when the cord is plugged in don't come on... any help please? I have too much tied up into this notebook wih programs and such to lose it all, just to name a couple I have adobe creative suite 5, microsoft office pro, and others (I need these programs for my college classes ASAP I can not afford to re-buy the programs). I mean really the battery went out on it just 10 days before the initial 1 year waranty ran out luckily and then 10 days after it ran out of waranty the fan went out.. I am not so worried about having to replace the fan it is rather cheap on Ebayonly like 9.49 I believe it was, and not to mention other than it breaking down on me just as the waranty went I really liked this notebook as it was plenty fast enough and worked well with my assignments for college and such as well as all the other gaming and hobbies I have on the notebook.. I had planned to buy upgrades from tthis site and build it up some as I'll be needing a bigger one once I graduate and start using it for my carreer (bachelors in technoligy in web design and I plan to add to that with a few other associates and such to exspand my opertunities for a while all in computer/internet/graphics/gaming areas of study). I built my first desktop PC from several PC's each having something wrong with them I bought them cheap and combind them into a somewhat super computer (at least for a 15 year old it was nice PC to get started with), I never was tought anything to do it I just read up n studied a lil online and hammer down self taught Thanks in advance

    Hey there,
I would first try a hard reset to see if it bring the computer back to life.
    To Perform A Hard Reset
Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for 5 seconds)
Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.
Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook. There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.
Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.
Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.
This will completely remove all power from the computer and then reintroduce the power, which sometimes resolves these types of issues. Are you about to see the power on screen or get into the BIOS when you turn it on?
    Thanks,
    Sean

  • Cooling fan not working...????

when i m turn on my laptop...
there is message display that cooling fan is not working correctly..???
& shut down after 15 sec now what is the problem is happen???

We need the model number of the laptop to give detailed help. One thing you can try is to remove the battery and AC adapter. Bent out a paperclip and stick it in the fan grille to hold the blades. Blow in compressed air. Now put the AC adapter in and start up. Tap F10 to enter BIOS. As you leave reset BIOS to default. This may remove the message. If not the fan needs to be replaced.

  • Lap top pavilion dv 7 shutting down Error 908 cooling fan not working

Since two days my HP pavilion dv 7 lap top has been heating up. I started getting warning notice error 908. One of the cooling fans apparnetly is not working properly and the system is shutting down.

If the operation has slowed you might also want to check the hard drive. Go back into the BIOS and look for the hard drive diagnostic test and run it. If the laptop came with Windows 8 you can also go into the "enhanced" diagnostics which is easier to use, with mouse support and such. Tap F2 as you power up instead of F10. You can run a whole bunch of diagnostics in there like memory and hard drive and DVD drive.  Let us know the results.

  • IBook Cooling Fan not working correctly.

My G4 iBook's cooling fan no longer comes on. It gets really warm after being on for a while, but the fan does not come on.

Yes. The new iBook 12" that I have is confirm to have heating problems with the Toshiba Hard Drive 40GB. I have sold like 20 of them that have such issue. And I have one as well!
I am going to call apple care hotline to find out later.
Because the hard drive is so hot and really shoot up to 70C when I switch on the Processor to highest performance in system preferences setting.
and it will shoot up to 6xC when I am just listening to iTunes for more than a few hours.
I think Apple should change a better hard drive for users.
because I do allot of typing and i could felt my left palm is actually very uncomfortable, especially when i am doing multimedia scripting and typing some database information. It just gets near to a burning state if I keep my palm longer there. Currently, I am using a cool gel pad for eyes to keep the heat in control and my palm away from it. I have a powerBook Pismo before that the bottom of the machine is hot. That's OK, because i work allot on table top even going out. This is annoying with the left palm rest heating problem.
I hope Apple should take note on this serious heating hard drive and change it for all the users soon.

Well it is either blocked, has a bad BIOS setting or the fan is dead and needs to be replaced. Try sticking a bent-out paperclip in the grille to hold the blades and blast some strong compressed air in there. Also try a hard reset....remove battery and AC charger and hold down power 30 seconds then plug in and try again. Also go into BIOS (F10) and set BIOS to default settings. If that does not work it has to be disassembled and the fan replaced.

  • Cooling Fan Not Working Properly

    Hello,
i have an HP Pavilion g7 laptop and when i turn it on, it states the fan is not working correctly, then shuts down after 15 seconds or continues to windows if you press enter.  I cleaned all the air vent with compressed air and still get same mesage when i power up.  The computer seems to work fine otherwise, but sometimes the fan will run at rather a high speed all night even when it is supposed to be "asleep" with the cover closed. I have to make it hibernate to ensure that it does not run all night like that.  Do I need to replace the fan and if so, how?
    Thank you!
    Rick

Yeah im having the same problem with the same laptop. Im kinda pissed about this because the first month i owned this laptop, that same fan broke and i had to send in into HP to be replaced. So now here we are again with the same part broken.
My friend also bought the same laptop at the same time as me and his fan also broke. So clearly this is a defective part.  Not only that but they broke my keyboard during the fan replacement.
So HP are you actually going to do anything about this because i was just on your FB page and repeatedly got ignored by the chick TINA who runs the page or whatever.
So im not too happy at this point, so whats gonna be done about this HP?

    Hi
I think it's indicating to replace the fan and heat sink assembly.
It occurs due to overheating & this decreased performance.
Try to do a hard reset first.
You may try doing a COMPLETE HARD DRIVE TEST & COMPETE MEMORY TEST from BIOS soon after powering on the system & pressing F10 or F2.
If you want any help, post back.

  • Cooling fan stops working at high temperatures - HP Pavilion dv6-6052ea

HP Pavilion dv6-6052ea Entertainment Notebook PC
    Windows 7 64-bit
For the past two days the fan turns off a few minutes into a game and doesn't turn back on until the laptop has cooled down to about 70C. This did occur after the laptop was used on a surface that did not allow it to cool down properly for about an hour. There haven't been any major changes or updates to the system and the fan is clean. Is there something that I can do to fix this issue?

Welcome to the HP Forum, Vess.
The notebook fan assembly may benefit from one or more of the following:
Fan Runs Constantly, the PC Notebook Operates Slower than Expected and Generates Heat
Reducing Heat and Fan Noise by Cleaning Air Vents - notebooks
    OR
You may have to replace the fan assembly, or at the least, the thermal paste.
You can verify the the specifications for your computer below:

You can call HP directly for help in finding the correct part number for your computer:
