Cooling Issue

Idle (centigrade)
CPU = 44-46
MB = 42-44
HD = 44-46
Load-Running Prime95
CPU = 56 max
MB = 50 max
HD = 52 max
All temperatures recorded in speedfan.  The load temps reduce significantly if I remove side of case, close to idle temps with case closed!  Does that mean my cooling is inefficient or is this to be expected?
My understanding is the CPU temperature is acceptable but the system temperature may be a little hot.  Although it runs stable at moment I’m thinking of improving the cooling.
Would a better PSU have much of an impact on the temps?
I have a boxed heatsink and fan on CPU which presumably is adequate.
At the moment I have an exhaust fan on PSU and a rear intake case fan which fans air across the inside of the case through some gaps on the front of the case.  I’m not sure whether I can fit another fan but my motherboard only has one connector for a system fan.  Do I have any other options?
My +12V rail was permanently above 13V (13.01-13.07) while running Prime95.  I know that this is within 10% but is this expected?  Idling, it is typically 12.77V.
Any thoughts?
Tks Dave

Is the 4pin 12V cable the small square connector with 2 black and 2 yellow wires? Is that specially for an additional fan or does it have some other purpose?
Yes, that is the 4-pin 12V connector. It is used on some boards for CPU power, if your board does not have the plug for it, then it is not needed to run that board.
Quote
So are you suggesting I ditch my rear intake case fan
The fan in the rear of the case should be an exhaust fan, not intake. If it is drawing air into the case, simply turn it around, so it pulls air out of the case. A fan at the back pulling air in, will draw warm air from the PSU back into the case.
Hope that answers your questions.

  • G5 Dual 2.5 Cooling Issues?

    My computer is typically on for long periods of time when I am working and so this problem is rarely an issue that causes problems, but it seems problematic for a machine of this design (its not like I'm on a Windows machine). Any time that I have been working on the machine for a little while, no matter how little work the computer does, it will not start back up immediately. The power button lights up but the computer does not start up. The only remedy that I have found is to wait, after a while (longer/harder the computer was running the longer I have to wait) it starts up and runs normally. I assume that it is a cooling issue because of the relation to the computers work load and how long it takes to work again. This used to occur some of the time, now it seems to be a guarentee that it will occur any time the computer is running for a while, hour or so. Anyone have any experience with issues like these or understanding of what is going on I would appreciate the input.
    Thanks.

    I downloaded Temperature Monitor
    and my first processor is getting up over 200 degrees

    That's getting up there near thermal shutdown. It sounds like your LCS may need to be replaced.

  • X79A GD65 (8D) Sub Zero cooling issue getting 91c ??

    Hi All
    Been on phase for years just a fyi
    Issue is on this board using phase shows 91c and locks the settings to stock speeds?? on air or water no issues I can get 5.0 seems as soon as I go on my SS which goes -50c I cant OC as the cpu temps shoot right to 91 calling for it to go stock!!
    Any help would be
    Thanks
    T&B
    PS I have the jumpers which I dont need as it boots fine this is just as soon as I go to OC in any form.

    I would get the cold bug but this accures even on water cooling for some, I ran across another guy with same issue except he is on just water.
    I can run easy on Air up to 5.0+ with good temps as well! Now they built these for LN2 as there are 2 jumpers on the board for cold booting but I dont have a boothing issue get into windows easy it is just when I go to OC anything above STOCK then the temps reverse to 91c from 0c very strange.
    Hope MSI has something I can try or no extreme cooling..................
    Also worked with the Gig UD7 big time issues with just booting but no chiller issues still had to rma the board for new one as it would go into these ramdom loops.
    Worked with the Asrock extreme 9 now this was a joke theres a saftey in the bio's hidden that wont allow extreme cooling, I'm in wait mode for them as well.
    Come on MSI send me something to make this work I have 2 threads up to show results on different cooling.

  • Dual 2.5 cooling issue:  Won't boot.

    I have a dual 2.5 G5 that I've had since it was new in in july 2004. It's never given me any problems.
    Recently it started "gurgling" (it's the best way to describe it). I was worried about the dreaded leaking issue so I tore it apart looking for leaks.
    Good news: No leaks. Bad news, it won't boot now.
    In the process of assessing the situation I checked the coolant level. To my surprise the system was pressurized quite a bit, even though it was stone cold. I don't understand this. I also get the red LED's on the mother board glowing indicating overheat, the cooling fans run at high velocity, and the computer won't boot.
    I am in the process of rebuilding the water pump as a preventative measure, resealing the two O-rings and the diaphragm. Everything seems in working order.
    I hope it will boot once I reassemble it, but I'm in a situation where I MUST have it up and running by monday.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi tarmaque-
    It may not be so much about pressure as air in the system. You said yourself that it was pressurized when you disassembled it. That is a huge clue! That fact alone would certainly make me think that there should be pressure.
    I think the higher boiling point under pressure is a factor. There isn't much fluid and it must dissipate a lot of heat.
    Water cooled engines absolutely are "pressurized"-ever take a radiator cap off of a hot engine? A cooling system must be able to handle pressure as (duh Daddy) liquids expand when hot.

  • Wifi, power and cooling issues with my MacBook Pro.

    I've had my MacBook Pro for about 2 years and I've been really pleased with its performance from work I've thrown at it. I initially got this MacBook Pro refurbished from the Mac store and it has a Apple Care protection plan. Although this past year I've noticed several issues that are probably hardware related. First, my MacBook's WiFi does not receive WiFi signals from the great distances it used to anymore. The times I can pick up WiFi are within like 5 yards from my wireless router. Second, I'm having an issue with the power. This past week, it seems my Macbook Pro does not run off the battery anymore. It only powers on when connected into the power supply. If I unplug the power supply, my Macbook turns off. It does not revert to the battery which is strange. Third, cooling seems to be a problem. The Macbook Pro is getting very hot. It burns my lap when it is holding there. The cooling problem has lasted since I got my Macbook back in January of 2007. I thought it was normal since I would load the CPU with some graphics intensive games. Now the Macbook Pro gets hot to doing some less CPU intensive tasks like surfing the web or word processing. I have noticed, a decrease in performance, longer boot times, loading of web browsers, and word processing applications. Would this be the best time to consider taking my Macbook Pro and for repair with apple care? I'd like to trouble shoot these issues to know exactly why these problems are happening. I have a feeling it could be due to the Macbook Pro getting hot. As for cooling I go by the manual and place it on a table or hard surface, or my lap. I pretty much want to know what is wrog and how to prevent issues like this in the future.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    It sounds like you have several issues:
    I don't know why your MBP can only receive wireless signals from 5 feet away. Unless possibly the antenna has worked loose. But I'm just guessing.
    Regarding the power, is your battery still good? Have you tried resetting the SMC?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411?viewlocale=en_US
    Regarding the heat issue, have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test? If you check your fans with iStatPro, are both running at an appropriate speed for the heat?
    Also, have you checked in Activity Monitor for any out of control processes which might be running in the background and hogging the CPU?
    A good place to start would be with the AHT. Since you have Applecare, you should also have a Tech Tool Deluxe disc, and you can run that too. Should anything turn up in the form of an error code, that would indicate a hardware problem. Write down the code and call Apple to arrange for repair.
    If you have access to an Apple Store, you could also just take your Mac in for evaluation.
    Good luck!

  • Fan cooling issue on Satellite L850-11D

    Hello,
    There's a big problem with my CPU Fan speed. It keeps running at 20-30% (about 950 RPM) while CPU/GPU temperatures are high. I cleaned fan with air, replaced thermal grease. I changed all setting to High performance and Active CPU cooling system.
    Sometimes fan speed increases to about 60% for few seconds, but then immediately goes down, back to 20%. I bought this laptop 6 months ago and it was working very well, with high fan speed (90%+ during games).
    Now when i play some games it just turns off after few minutes.
    If someone knows how can i fix it, please help.
    (I can make SS of temperatures/fan speed sensor if required)
    (sorry for my english)

    I agree with as***the unit is 6 month old so from my point of view the warranty was still valid
    In such case if the cooling module would be faulty the notebook would be fixed free of charge.
    But you have disassembled the unit at your own hand big mistake buddy because now the warranty isnt valid anymore :(
    I have no other recommendations for you.
    As as*** wrote; try BIOS update since the fan table is stored in the BIOS.
    But I assume its hardware related issue since this cooling module worked properly in the past.

  • Qsmio x505 Cooling issue

    I received my latop back from repair today and it's giving me problems. The fans were replaced because they were making a buzzing noise. Ever since I got it back, a message saying: "A problem with the cooling system has been detected. Please turn off the computer immediately, and return it for service." pops up randomly. The computer isn't overheating. I checked with a program I installed after the issue started to make sure they weren't. The only thing that happens is the fans go turbo and blast out a lot of air seconds after the message pops up. So far nothing really bad has happened, but I'm afraid it's a matter of time. I don't want to send it in for repair again. I just sent it in twice over the past 30 days for two different reasons. Is there a solution for this?

    Please include your full model number when posting problems on the forums. It can be found on the bottom of your laptop.
    While the laptop might not be overheating at the current time, it is possible that something wasn't done completely correctly when it was repaired last time that could cause this. It'd be hard to tell whether this message is a false positive or indicative of a real problem without servicing!

  • IMac Cooling Issue

    Before i installed Snow Leopard i had a program called SMC Fan Control that allowed me to change the speed at which my fans operated and it worked great it cooled my computer down by almost 20F most of the time with the fans operated at their peek but after installing Snow Leopard the program no longer works due to support issues now i use a program that is a preference pane called iMac Fan Control and it works like it should but when i put the fans at their peek they don't sound like they used to and barley cool my mac down by 2F how can i improve this because it seams like this is the macs issue not the program.
    I am also wondering what people think a good temperature for my mid 2007 iMac would be.

    I have SMC Fan Control and have no problem using it with Snow Leopard. In fact I downloaded it AFTER installing SL. As I recall, when I went to the web site it said something to the effect "now compatible with SL". My version of SMC FC is 2.2.2. Perhaps you have an earlier version?
    As to fan speeds, the noise starts bugging me if I set any of the 3 fans higher than about 1800 rpm. I can't imagine setting them at 4000. In addition to the noise I would think that's a recipe for reducing your fan life considerably.

  • R6970 lightning cooler issues

    I acquired a pair of R6970 Lightnings recently.  I noticed the fan on one of the cards ran extremely loud, so I started to troubleshoot the issue.
    The problem would dissapear when I turned my case horizontally, which made me believe the issue is with the cooler.
    When I ran the kombustor stress test on the cards individually, one of the cards would last about 5 seconds before it failed the test and froze up the system, with garbled video output.  As soon as I would lay the pc case down on the side, the kombustor test runs indefinitelly without any issues.
    So it seems to me the heatsink retention screws aren't up to par, causing the heatsink to not make full contact with the gpu, when the case is upright.  I checked the 4 screws with springs on them to make sure they're tight.
    My question is, has there been any other instances of this happening to anyone, and how did you go about fixing it?

    @cuttz
    Only one of the video cards exhibits the issue.  I ran them in crossfire, and individually, pci slot one and slot two, and regardless of the combination, one of the video cards locks up the system after 45 seconds if the pc case is vertical.  If horizontal, it takes about 5 minutes.  I was actually able to reproduce the issue even when the case was horizontal by very lightly pulling on the edge of the heatsink shroud away from the pcb.
    @henry
    I must have reseated the cards a million times, as well as the connectors.  Nothing helped.  I've tried every combination.
    After about 10-12 hours of troubleshooting, I now believe there is a loose connection somewhere on the pcb or inside it.  Maybe a loose component that was the result of a bad soldering job at the factory.  I visually inspected everything thoroughly, just to make sure i didnt miss something obvious, and I didn't find anything out of the ordinary.
    So in the end, I've decided to RMA the problematic card so as to stop myself from pulling my hair out.  Hopefully the MSI techs will have better luck in diagnosing the issue.

  • MSI Big Bang XPower II - Corsair H60 Water cooling issue

    So I am using a Corsair H60 water cooling on my MSI Big Bang XPower II mainboard.  I have followed the correct instructions on installation but every time I turn the computer on once it its 31 it shuts down.  Everything seems to be working correctly except the cooling.  There are no instructions that really relate well to installation for this water cooling to this mother board so I have tried placing the pump power and the fan power on various different inputs.  I have the pump just on a sys power fan and the 120mm fan blowing through the coils on the back of the machine connected to the CPU 1 head fan (as instructed in their videos).  I am not 100% sure the pump is working but I know that the fan is working and the hardware overview shows it recognizes the fan.
    anyone have some ideas to try to see if I can get this to work? I am also wondering if it is a faulty pump or something but it seems to be working.

    The pump is not working. The 3-pin connector for a fan header is just for reading out pump speed. You need to power it with the molex connector.

  • Super drive and cooling issues

    Whenever I play a CD of DVD in my new super drive it comes out very hot even if it was only in the machines for a few minutes. Also, my cooling fans never seem to increase or decrease. I'm not even sure they are on. I can hear them work at maximum speed when I use the Hardware test on the Install disc but I get complete silence when I run the G5 normally. The back of my Mac becomes quite hot after awhile and I am afraid of melting something. Any suggestions?

    Hello John and welcome to discussions,
    Its pretty normal for this to occur. In fact it's just plain normal and to be expected.
    Sounds like you have a 100% happy Mac there.
    Hope that helps you

  • Portege M400 - CPU cooling issue

    One year ago, when I had been using my Portege M400 for 2 years, it started deadlocking occasionally. Sometimes [I couldn't even start it up|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjNa8-c2Aro]. Using cut and try method I located the problem. The metal spring which clasps the heatsink to CPU was doing it with not enough strength:

    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/534/534/170720102589.jpg
    The problem has been solvable by benting the clutches so the spring starts apply more force clasping the heatsink to CPU:
    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/535/535/170720102591.jpg
    Applying a new layer of thermal grease has been helpful as well:
    http://zorko.ru/assets/files/533/533/170720102585.jpg
    However, the solution works for several weeks only. And then (particularly if it is hot outside) the story starts all over again.
    Any suggestions how to solve the problem once and for all? Thanks.

    Hi Greendrake,
    Its really great that you are interested in your Portege M400 and you can disassmble it. Its really not easy and so this can only be done from people with a lot of experience.
    Anyway, as you know here its user forum only. That means you can talk with normal people like you and me. So I would recommend contacting an authorized service provider in your country. Maybe the guys know about this problem or something else or you need a special thermal grease because not all thermal greases compatible to all cooling assemblies.
    By the way: On the Toshiba website you can find a list of all service providers.
    I hope it helps. :)

  • MSI X58 Pro cooler issue

    I'm not really sure wether this is a problem caused by my motherboard, but it's worth a try here:
    When i started my computer for the very first time up, the CPU fan went to it's maximum speed. When the BIOS got to the point where it had to boot my OS, the CPU fan calmed down. When i put my motherboard into my case and i tried it out again, it won't go back to a slower speed. I makes quite some noise... Is this problem related to the MoBo, and if that is the case, what can i do to fix it?

    Well, give us some details about your system.  >>Posting Guide<<
    Also, what case do you have and how do you have the fans(cooling configured(how many and what is the direction of airflow).

  • HPE430me graphics upgrade and cooling issues

    Hello,
    I have an HP Pavilion Elite 430me and wish to upgrade the installed Geforce 440 card to a Radeon 6870.
    I have 4 questions:
    1-Does the MS-7613 (Iona-GL8E) motherboard support PCIe 2.0 as it doesn't state it in the specifications page; it just says PCIe 16X? Bear in mind that it is an H57 based board.
    2-Does the case allow space for the 10" graphics card?
    3-Is the 460W PSU sufficient?
    4-I live in Egypt and the temperatures here is quite hot during much of the year and the case only comes with a single 80mm fan; is overheating a possibility here considering that a Core i7 870 is also present? Is there any way to install another fan on this case?
    Thanks
    This question was solved.

    1-Pcie 2.0 is backward compatible.  Therefore, it should work fine.
    I know, but I don't want to bottleneck my system...  I understand.  Using a PCIe 2.0 card will not bottleneck your system.
    2- I don't believe that this card will fit.  I normally recommend staying under 9".
    3-The HD Radeon 6870 requires a minimum of 500W.
    Could you recommend a good card at this size and power limit?  If you mean for a 500W PSU, I suggest upgrading to at least 550W if that is your plan.  This will give you many more options for cards.  I like Corsair and OCZ.  Both of the PSU's in the links have 120mm fans.  This will help with cooling the computer.
    As for a card, this is more difficult.  HP has their video cards made to their specs.  Therefore, it is difficult to know which cards would perform better.  However, I like XFX, BFG, EVGA, Sapphire and PNY in that order.  Here is a card that should perform to your needs.  This is based on a nVidia chip.  Also, here is a card based on an AMD/ATI chip.  Both cards are double profile (cover two slots).  This means that one of the PCIe x1 slots will be covered.  It is always a good idea to read as many of the customer reviews as possible.  They will give you the straight scoop without manufacturer hype.
    4-The AMD/ATI cards come with their Catalyst Control Center.  This software suite allows you to control the fan speed of the card.
    I meant the case: is the single 80mm fan sufficient, and if not, can I add more fans?  I understand.  Controlling the fan on the video card will help the entire computer.  The majority of heat can be generated by the card.

  • Boot Cooling Issue on MSI P67A-GD65

    I luv my MSI P67A-GD65 with the 1.8b10 bios but this one has me baffled - first of all my system is controlled by a wall switch so at night I hit the switch and all power is off the system.  When I turn it on after work I hit the power button and when I go into bios the temps read 97c!.  After a restart the same thing and then on the third try temps are normal.
    I have the CPU temp setting at 50c and am suspecting that the Corsair H50 pump does not have enough volts to turn over especially when it is cold.   I've been dealing with it but those high temps are kind of scary.

    Maybe the fact that by shutting off the power like like that you lose the standby power to the MB creating your problem. Do you have the same problem if you don't shut the wall switch off and just shut the PC down the normal way in Windows?
    I always shut down windows first then hit the wall switch.  Tonight I'll leave the power on to the computer and will check it tomorrow after work.
