COOLMAX fanless 480W PSU- am I asking for trouble?

Hello friends,
I'm not usually one to fiddle around with power supplies, being as how I fried my last motherboard by gambling with one (Enermax Noisetaker ) However, I've been looking for ways to cut down the ambient noise in my room. I came across this PSU:

I agree with everybody on the amount of AMPS on the 12V... Today I'll be installing a new PSU... because of power fluctuations caused by my old PSU (15A@12V) I've a history of troubles with my system. Take my advise >25A@12V!
I've no experience with fanless PSU's but I found a nice PSU review at http://www.tweakers.net. It's in dutch so I don't know if it's of any use to you? Their conclusion is that they can recommend: Yesico Fanless FL-420 and Silentmaxx semi-Fanless 450W. But they remark that both are pretty expensive. Also the impovement in sound-levels will be only noticable in a allready very quiet system.
Furthermore they advise on maintaining a outward airflow from your casing...but a good casefan will do the job much better than the dual-fan PSU's because of all the components that obstruct the airflow in most PSU's.

I don't know what kind of "trouble" you are refering to but there should be none due to the 24/7 and Sleep. Mine runs 24/7, on the power adapter, and is probably Sleeping all but 7 hours of the day. It is 15 months old and has never had a problem.
If you are concerned about heat, it is going to get as hot as it is going to get shortly after being booted up and put into service. It does not get progressively hotter over the hours and days. It gets hotter and cooler based on the applications you are running. It will of course be very cool in Sleep mode.
Generally speaking, solid state electronic components will last indefinitley if they don't get too hot and don't receive excessive voltage. Whether or not the iBook's design keeps all things well within the manufacturers limits is unknown to me. Thermal cycling can be hard on the circuit boards. Enough heating/cooling cycles put stress on solder joints which can eventually crack.
The hard drive, being mechanical, will eventually wear out. This is why it is foolish to not have a backup drive that you routinely update. The CCFL (display's backlight) will wear out. The CCFL is probably rated to last for around 30,000 hours of ON time. This is one reason that it makes good sense to shut the screen's backlight OFF when not in use rather than use a screen saver, which ironically does not save the LCD screen. Rather, it wears it out at the same rate as having any thing else on the display, stationary or not.
The battery will wear out no matter what, whether you use it, cycle it, keep it on a shelf etc. It will wear out quickest if you run the iBook off the battery. It will wear out quicker the lower you let it get before recharging. That is the nature of Li-Ion batteries. They last longest if kept topped off. They will wear out whether you use them or not so don't be surprised when within a year your battery doesn't last as long as it used to. This is inevitable.

Upgrading FCE 2 to FCE HD in mid-project--asking for trouble?

I'm in the middle of a couple of FCE projects using FCE 2.0.3, OS 10.3.9, and QuickTime 6.5.
To gain SoundTrack and LiveType (I have no desire to edit in HD), I want to upgrade to FCE HD, OS 10.4.9, and QuickTime 7.
My question is, after I do the upgrades, will I be able to open these FCE 2 projects into FCE HD, and continue to edit them as usual, just as though I had created them in FCE HD? Or will I have problems trying to convert FCE 2 projects into FCE 3.5 projects like that?

Well, I went ahead and upgraded everything, and I am now running 10.4.9, QT 7, and FCE HD (v. 3.5).
And nothing drastic has happened; in fact there have been no serious problems at all in editing old projects in the new version. Success!
What I discovered is that the upgrade is only an upgrade in the sense that you end up with a newer version of FCE, because the old version is still sitting right there in the Applications folder beside the new one, and can still be launched and run as before. So, after "upgrading," you can take your pick which version of FCE you want to run.
Apparently the FCE HD installer program detects the earlier version and extracts all the user information from it, since the registration box appeared with all the information already filled in, and the only serial number it asks for is the new one. But it does not preserve and carry over any user preferences, button bar additions, etc. As far as that goes, you are starting out brand new in FCE HD.
Now, when I open an old project into the new version of FCE, a dialogue box tells me that I can save the project as a new version with a new name, while leaving the old version alone, which is just what I have been doing, for backup safety.
However, the old FCE 2 projects seem to run just fine in FCE HD, with no glitches at all. I did receive one complaint from FCE HD, upon opening an FCE 2 project, that a certain clip "had different in and out points" than it was supposed to have, or some such thing, so I just deleted that clip and replaced it with a fresh copy and all has been well since.
So, I guess I can report to anyone else contemplating doing this that there are no serious problems or glitches to be encountered while upgrading FCE projects in mid-stream, so to speak. I have now been doing considerable editing on old projects in the new version of FCE with no problems whatsoever (knocking on my wooden head!).
And I really like LiveType and Soundtrack! The upgrade comes with a tutorial DVD that walks you through FCE HD, LiveType, and Soundtrack, and I have subsequently made my first animated titles and soundtracks, quite easily. Impressive! Gaining those two programs made the upgrades worth the trouble and expense.
My only gripe, a minor one, is that a lot of the Soundtrack loops seem geared to teen or twenty-something boys, since it contains so much trendy synthesized throbbing, and the "people" sound effects consist of a great deal of agonized screaming--just what I would have enjoyed at age 17, but not now, forty years later. I was hoping for a selection of more sedate and melodic-sounding loops. (The tutorial also employs a demonstration project showing athletic boys roller-skating across a vast mud flat at suicidal speeds, while holding large kites or sails for wind-propulsion. A fall or crash under those conditions would be spectacular, and I watched eagerly for one, but amazingly, not a single lad came a cropper--not in the chosen clips, anyway).
Now, can anyone tell me where I might acquire some more classical and mature music loops (symphonic, perhaps) for this wonderful program, Soundtrack?

Multiple libraries - asking for trouble?

Hi all,
I'm using a laptop with two external drives for backup. Internal HDD is now full and I want to move my entire photo library to an external drive. Two options I am considering:
1) Store no photos on the internal drive and use one designated external drive as a working drive instead. Might be a little slower since LR has to work through the USB connection, but seems like a viable and simple option.
2) Keep one small library of the most recent images on internal drive and work off of that. Use external drive only for the "old images" library and for backup. This would be nice as I would be able to work on recent images without having to always take an external drive along. LR's workspeed would probably be faster, too. Elsewhere I read that you CAN have two libraries in LR and choose between the two by pressing ALT on startup (I'm using Windows). However, my gut tells me that this option could result in a huge headache. What happens when I move folders of pictures from the recent library on the internal drive to the old library on the external drive? What I see happening is that LR will then no longer be able to keep track of the changes as those will still reside in the LR catalog file that is on linked to the "recent" library.
What would you recommend? Am I overthinking this? It's just that I've been burned with this kind of stuff so many times in the past (especially with iTunes) that I'm leaning to keep things as simple as possible.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Using an external drive holding the image files is entirely "do able". In fact it is the way many, including myself, work. The same files being used on both a Laptop and desktop machine. Keeping the actual lrcat and preview files on the external disk may slow down things, but isn't required, especially if you only plan on using the external drive with one machine. In this case the lrcat should be located on the primary drive with the actual image files on the external drive, this will be no slower than having the image files on the internal drive other than when building previews.
he disk is a fast one.I actually maintain the whole catalog on the external drive to aid swapping between machines, whilst this makes things a little slower than using an internal disk it isn't really that noticeable as long as the machine in use has enough RAM and the cahce is on a fast disk.

24P, cinema tools,..asking for trouble down the road?

A project was shot using 24p.
Removed frames using Cinema Tools and it did a better job than FCP did. Remove Advance Pulldown wouldn't pull out the correct frame. (Or I'm leaving some important step out.)
Now the project is ready to edit in 23.98 fps.
But what happens if I need to re-digitize the media with the project being offline down the road? I noticed the time-code Media Start is a little different. Will my sequence be off by a few frames and be out of sync?
Isn't 24pAdvanced better since you can bypass the step through Cinema Tools?

When you strip pulldown via Cinema Tools, it rewrites the file to 24 fps timecode, so recapturing isn't possible, in my experience, when the tape media is 29.97 timecode.
If you're working offline/online, yes, 24pA is better because when FCP strips the pulldown, the file retains the 29.97 fps timecode. That is, frames, and those timecode numbers, are simply skipped.
I hope you have a copy of the FCP project file back when it was still 29.97 fps cause you'll might need that clip info when you have to recapture. Though I suppose a logging sheet that corresponds exactly to your clips could suffice...

Qadministrator asking for passwords

OK, long story, compressor 4, I'm on 10.6.8, set up a cluster WITHOUT ANY PASSWORDS but when I try to administer cluster qadministrator has set an admin and user password??? I didn't set any passwords at all, I'm the only one in my studio. I can't get past this at all.
Trawled the posts and found d 'similar' posts but not the same, I'm getting fried looking for an answer. Anyone got a clue

No, the one that's acting up is 3.5 on my main boot drive where I have FCP suite installed. Been using FCP since version 1 and stumbled through all the uninstal reinstal glitches over the years, with DVDSP and Compressor always throwing up some glitch or other and then icons bouncing in the dock, then trawling the boards for workarounds etc. and of course 'cannot connect to background process'. I spent SO much time over the years troubleshooting this whole suite and now that its at the end of the road when I get it all working sweet I timecapsule the whole disc.
I've got version 4 on the other volume with FCPX installed, it's not much different, but it's a drag working in FCP on one volume, exporting my prores master and restarting and firing up compressor 4 on another volume. Definitely not installing FCPX and compressor 4 on the same volume as FCP studio 3, think thats asking for trouble.

This weekend I’ll be taking my rig to a PC repair shop and ask them to swap out my PSU and my graphics card.
Because I’ve RMA’d all the components (see signature) several members of different forums, and the tech support of the various components, seem to think that my boot problem is because of a compatibility issue with either my Ultra X3 600W PSU or my XFX 8600 GT and my P35D3.
I need to be ready to make decision, without having time to research, if the repair tech recommends a replacement.
Here’s my considerations:
I selected the Ultra because it's both modular and 85% efficient (it also has the required 8-pin cable to power the P35D3's CPU and it has SATA power cables.
I selected the XFX 8600 GT card because it is dual-link (2 DVI outs -- Dell 30” & Viewsonic 19”) and it has no fan, and is DX10 ready. I’m not attached to the idea of no fan. I’m a speed freak but not a gamer or an over clocker--I like the option of trying out games.
Both the Ultra and the XFX are somewhat medium priced.
If the repair tech discovers that other PSUs or graphic cards work then I might be able to get Ultra or XFX to accept a return. Neither company accepted my offer to pay extra to exchange mine for another better model.
Suggestions please.

When I login to my equipment it ask for a certificate. How do I delete these certificates?

We just recently upgraded our equipment and now I don't get the whole screen parts are missing. So I figured if I delete certificates or renew them it might work. So I need to know How to delete them or renew them.

Among other things iTunes uses your credit card to confirm that you are a resident of the same country as the store you are using. Occasionally it may ask for you to confirm the details and "prove" the card by putting on a holding charge which it later releases. If you have credit in the store that should be applied to any purchases first, even if iTunes asks you to confirm your details. Your listed credit in the window can become out of date if you use more than one computer or device to make purchases. Signing out of your account, then back in, should refresh the balance.

Yes, if you repurchase it you may lose your progress. The exception would be a game that stored all your progress on a server under your ID
If you want to retain your progress you have two choices:
1. Don't apply the update.
2. Use your fathers account password to update the game.

Need Disk 2 for10.4.2 got stuck asking for disk 2

I purchased a used Imac G5 with 10.5 on it. I need 10.4 for a billing program I use. The Imac G5 install disk 1 came with the G5. I started the install and got 3/4 done, then it asks for disk 2. Bad news? No disk 2. The previous owner said he never used the disk and there is only the one I have.
Whenever I boot the computer, it turns on and asks for Disc 2. Is there any way to get in and take off the 10.4 update I did? That way I can go back to running 10.5 [I have no disk for 10.5 it was just loaded on the machine]. I can boot the computer using my external drive that has 10.4.11 on it. Any help is much appreciated.
I had to purchase this G5 because my Imac G4 15 flat panel was dealt a double power surge on Monday and died. Luckily Mac folks able to make a complete copy of the contents on the hard drive.

You can call Apple Customer Relations 800-767-2775 and they will send you the install discs for a small fee.
Do call them and have the serial # handy. But someone a couple of weeks ago, reported that Apple said they didn't have any more. (It was for iMac PPC (2005 I think). So if you get some Post back.
One thing you can try with the one disk, is before the install starts, click on the custom button, and uncheck as much as possible. When it ask for #2, I think its looking for applications to install and maybe X11. Good luck

Photosmart C4580 "stuck" printing about 20 copies of each when I only asked for 1!

I am baffled and I need to fix this problem soon! I need my printer. All of a sudden, my printer started printing about 20 copies of each item when I only asked for one! This not only uses a lot of ink, but wastes a ton of time, for the little of time I have put up with it. Lately, I have just shut it off. Please - any suggestions?? I thought of uninstalling and reinstalling, but I can't find my disk! Thank you, Soly

Did you ever find a solution for this problem? I have no problem printing the business cards out on a Canon printer, or a different HP printer I used to have, but the D110 is nothing but a pain in the you know what ! I'm using publisher and the avery 8371 card stock, I searched solutions for days and did everything possible but still they're not printing correctly!! I'm dissapointed in this printer, every time I have a problem with something it always seems to be an HP product!!! Very frustrating because I never had to mess with any settings in the other printers I had, I would just put the file in, change the quality and click the print button with no problems. I'm ready to throw this printer out the window Anyway thanks in advance and I hope somebody can help me with this issue !!!

I recently had to have my computer hard drive "cleaned." While this was going on, I broke my SG3, and now own an SG4.
I also changed servers for the internet. When I tried to plug in my SG4, after not being on iTunes for some time, all my data was erased.
No every time I try and do ANYTHING, it asks for my PW.....which is ALWAYS WRONG.....though I've reset it over and over and over.
I want my data back (contacts, pics, etc.). But I can't even maneuver around iTunes any more.
How in the **** do I get someone from iTunes to give me assisstance for the myriad of problems for which I am encountering. This is a CLUSTERF.....

There is no such thing as an "SG3" or "SG4". Did you possibly mean a 3GS and iPhone4?
It has always been very basic to ensure that a backup exists of your media and other important files. Computers fail, hard drives crashes... things happen. Do you not have a backup? The iPhone, like all iDevices is NOT a backup of your media, but rather a mirror of the content in the iTunes library on your computer.
If your contacts, pics, etc are not on your computer, no backups of the iPhone exist, and they are not on the phone, they are gone.
No one can magically make them re-appear.
