saludos

Bienvenido/a

  • Can i copy everything over to time machine then do a clean install of lepord and still have full acess to old files?

I want to start fresh, but still have everything from the current hard drive at my fingertips. Is time machine the man for the job?
And will it still work if i copy everything over using time machine but then upgrade to snowlepord? or will it not reconize it?

Well, I for one don't trust Time Machine, I prefer to have a bootable clone of what I have now & make sure it works before doing anything.

The correct method of restoring photos from Time Machine is to restore the entire library.
The way that TM backs up files makes nearly impossible to go into the backup via the Finder and recover individual files. So you will have to restore a library that contains the photos you need being sure to select the option to keep both versions.
Then open the restored library and export those photos you need.  Open your original library and import those photos.  After that you can delete the recently restored library.

  • How to Copy Files from Corrupt Time Machine Disk

Following a series of power outages, my TM disk became corrupted. When I tried to repair with disk utility, I got the message: Unable to repair, copy as many files as you can and then reformat the disk.
My question: Is there any way to capture all/part of my TM backups (they contain a history going back many months that I'd prefer not to lose)? Though I can dig in and get individual files, when trying for anything larger (like the series of backups), they are unable to copy with the files/folders being locked/read only.
Any help would be appreciated. I'll move to a 2 drive backup system after this!
    Thanks

TM performs a backup in a rather unusual manner. An initial backup stores all the files in a disc image file. It then creates a special type of alias for each file. When you look through a TM backup you are looking at the aliases, not the files themselves.
If the drive's directory is the only thing corrupted and Disk Utility cannot repair it, then I suggest trying Disk Warrior that can repair many directory problems that Disk Utility cannot.
Otherwise, you will need to go through the backup with the TM application and attempt to restore the good files to another hard drive. Also,
See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

  • Can I copy messages from my Time Machine ~/Library/Mail/V2 to Macbook?

Hi, I wonder if I can copy my old messeges from time machine to my new mailbox via ~/Library/Mail/V2 . Maybe I am doing something wrong but all the messages i have copied are not showing in the mail.app and I do not know how to index them.
    Thank you.

Not likely.. the files from the card are loaded into the computer via iphoto I guess.. they are saved in a different format.. you cannot copy those files back to the camera card. But you should still have a backup of the photos .. in TM which is the backup of the iphoto library.
Almost nobody I have heard from will save the original files in raw format. To do that you would need to open the card via Finder and copy the raw files to a folder on the computer which you then backup by TM?? Is that how you have done it??
Tell us more info but most likely you need help from folk in iphoto section or aperture or whatever software you use.
I can help you to recover stuff on your hard disk to recover.. but not on SD card unless you actually included it in your backup which would be most unusual.

  • Trying to copy out files from Time Machine backup.

I'm really frustrated here any help greatly appreciated. Order of events:-
    1. Basically I have been backing up my files through time machine on a external drive for my mac mini.
    2. I formatted my mac mini and sold it to my friend.
    3. I am having troubles copying files(iphoto library) from my timemachine backup on to my imac.
    4. I don't need anything else except a few particular files, but everytime i try drag or copy it gives me the 'no privilege/permission error'.
It's really frustrating i've changed permissions and everything and still doesn't work. It will work if I go copy the individual files. But any folders doesn't work.
    Any advice?
    Many thanks in advance.

That's correct. Time Machine backups retain the original ownership and permissions. So one user doesn't have access to another user's data. Usually, that's a good thing.

Your best bet may be to use +Migration Assistant+ to migrate the user account and selected data. Then log on as that user and use/copy the data as desired. See the pink box in #19 of Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • Reinstall and copy data, applications from time machine backup

    Hi,
I have some problems with my Mac, I guess related to my own stupidness.
My plan is the following. Create a back via Time Machine.
Completely reset / reinstall OS X
Add files and applications from the backup to the new system.
Is that possible without any problems? Can I just drag apps from the backup to the application folder? I guess files should be not problem...
    Thanks in advanced

First, 99% of problems with OSX can be fixed by just installing a fresh copy of OSX, without disturbing anything else.
But if you really want to erase and reinstall, that's fine so far.
When the Mac starts up after installing OS X, it will ask if you want to transfer your stuff.  That's Setup Assistant, and by far the best way to do it.  See Using Setup Assistant on Mountain Lion or Lion for the groy details, including a section on why transferring apps is an "all or nothing" thing.
If you do it any other way, you'll likely have permissions problems.  See Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.

  • Advice on Carbon Copy Cloner vs. Time Machine

I have been stuck with a crappy all in one router/modem from the cable company for the last year.  Yesterday, I bought an Asus RT N56U.  It works great and I get great range.  I almost went with an Airport Extreme, but went $40 cheaper.  Then, while I was there I decided to get a hard drive for backups since I really need to be better about this with all of the pictures we have of our young children.  My wife and I also have Macbooks from 2006-2007 era.  Mine's 1,1 with an upgraded memory to 2GB and a new 500GB HD.  My wife also has a new HD and the same specs.  Anyway, I was tired of hooking them up for time machine backups, so, I tried to format my new Toshiba 3TB hard drive with 3 partitions, all MacOS Extended.  One Partition for each of us for time machine and one for random other storage.  I wanted a box where I could access this stuff from my iphone if I wanted, just because I thought it was cool to use aicloud (asus).
Anyway, I backed up my computer and hers using time machine with a direct connection to each computer.  Then, I tried to hook the hard drive up to the router and can't find it.  Come to find out the router only supports FAT and NFTS and one or two other formats.   It does not support Mac OS.
So, now I've tried to figure out a way around this.  Carbon Copy Cloner says that it will support non Mac OS formats for the hard drive, but not for a bootable copy.  So, I could theoretically use CCC to copy things to the HD through WiFi if it is formatted non MacOS, just I wouldn't get a bootable copy.  Maybe, I could just copy things like pictures and what not and not all the crap that ends up on my computer after 6 years.
Or even could CrashPlan do a local back up through Wifi?
I basically want something similar to the functionality of Time Capsule with or without Time Machine, but kind of like saving a few bucks, getting 3TB, and a pretty solid router.
    Seem reasonable to anyone?
Sometimes I think I should have just gotten a time capsul ... Need to double check Best Buy's Return policy.
    Thanks!

Sometimes I think I should have just gotten a time capsul ...
    So do I.
Time Machine supports two and only two backup devices: a locally connected volume (like your Toshiba HD) and Time Capsule. If you are fond of the pictures you have of your young children, then use a supported backup method.
You can exclude specific volumes or folders from Time Machine and Carbon Copy Cloner.
Why anyone would buy anything from Best Buy is one of the great mysteries of life. Good luck returning it.

  • Copying Data From Time Machine HD

    Hi Everyone,
I have a Lacie HD 500gb connected to my imac. I have been using it for the Time Machine Back Up. 2 days back the power adapter of the hard drive had gone dead, so the vendor agreed to give a stand by power adapter because, lacie will replace the whole hardrive. Now the issue is that, i wanna copy everything on the time machine hard drive, so when i get my harddrive, i copy back the things to the New HD, so i can have the same timeline- date, and data which i had backed up till now.
    Please help!!!!!
    Thank you.

Use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone your TM drive to another external drive. When the new drive arrives simply clone it back the same way.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

  • Purchased a 5T external, formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), trying to drag and drop Time Machine. Tells me "The backup can't be copied because the backup volume doesn't have ownership enabled." How do I enable ownership? What is ownership?

    Thanks!

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
This technique will only work if the volume you're copying to is the same size, or larger than, the one you're copying from.
First, open the Time Machine preference pane and click the Select Disk... button. You may have to unlock the settings first by clicking the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window. Authenticate as an administrator.
Delete the volume you're going to copy from the list of backup destinations. Then turn Time Machine OFF.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. All existing data on the destination volume will be erased. That shouldn't be a problem, because you don't want to mix backup and non-backup data on the same drive anyway.
If the volume you're copying was encrypted by Time Machine, you may have to unlock it first. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar of the Disk Utility window.
Turn Time Machine back ON and select the new volume as a backup destination. You can also continue to use the old volume, if you wish. The two will be alternated when both are available.
CAUTION: If the volume you're copying is corrupt, as shown by Repair Disk or Verify Disk in Disk Utility, then that corruption will be copied to the new drive. Don't copy data from a corrupt volume on a malfunctioning drive. Put the drive aside and don't use it until you're sure you'll no longer need the data. Then securely erase it and take it to a recycling center. Do the same if the Restore operation fails with "disk errors."

  • New iMac, used Time Machine to Copy Settings from Laptop, Having Trouble

Sorry if this is a common question, but I couldn't find an answer after searching the boards.
My new MacBook arrived three weeks ago. Like a good girl, I've been backing up with Time Machine and an external hard drive. No problems.
My new iMac arrived yesterday. While setting it up, it asked if I wanted to copy settings from a Time Machine backup. I said "yes" (should have said "no") and told Time Machine to copy my laptop settings to my iMac. I did not copy Applications or Documents--just account information.
My new iMac is now a bit confused. It thinks it is a copy of my MacBook (the backup of the iMac is called 'MacBook 2'), and it also thinks I have software installed on it that I don't have installed. Specifically, it is refusing to install a statistical program, stating that "Install has detected the presence of SPSS 16.0 for Mac. Please uninstall the existing version before installing this version of the product."
Here's my question: is there a way I can "undo" the migration that I did yesterday? I certainly wouldn't be losing any files or anything of importance if I could just take it all back.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Chaya

it's probably some preference file in the transfered home directory that was put there when you installed that program on the macbook. You can try looking for that preference file in library folder in your home directory or you can create a new user account and install the software from there.
