Copied files on Intel Mac don't open

How strange can it get? If I copy files via ethernet or key-chain stick to the new Intel Mac the files do not open. XPress docs and fonts just have a dark rectangular symbol with green type on it saying exec. They are ok if I burn them first on a CD and then copy them. Is their something I ought to know?
Please help.
Karl

Unless the files are corrupt (possible when copied over a network albeit not entirely likely) you can try to reset the files back to their proper settings. For those who prefer to not use the Terminal, there is an application called batChmod that puts a GUI on the UNIX command for changing permissions although from my tests and past experiences, extensions play the vital role. I generally use the Terminal for this (and will explain more in detail later if people want to go that route/use it).
- A document's default setting is Owner (Read/Write), Group (Read Only), Everyone (Read Only) or 644 in the Terminal.
- 'Get Info' on the file and make sure that the proper extension is added to the file name. In Terminal, you can rename a file using the 'mv' command
(example, mv test mv test.rtf would append the .rtf to the file named test).
- While in "Get Info" use the "Open with:" pop up/tab and see if your application appears as a potential. If not, use the 'Other..." option and manually locate it. If it is grayed out then the Finder/System doesn't consider it to be usuable.
- Try dropping the modified document onto the application and see if it launches manually. Failing that, try opening the document from within the application.
- failing that, try launching the application first so that the system is aware of its existence and then try opening the documents/assigning the default app to it via Get Info after. This happened to me initially with a new user who had their Word documents (.doc) opening in TextEdit despite Office being installed. Additionally, my experience with Mac OS X Server and managed applications for users showed that sometimes an application (particularly a third party app) would be interpreted by the Server/App management as a generic preference file and not be registered/implimented. Once I ran the application once on the server, Workgroup Manager and the app management setting recognized its existence and all was well. This is a long shot but anything is possible!

To delete files from your external HDD, attach it to your MBP and drag the unwanted files to trash and then empty trash.
Then you select the files that you want to transfer by 'drag and drop' to the external HDD and trash the files on your MBP.
    Ciao.

So just the document I was last working on in pages won't open. I can't email it either it just sits preparing the document no matter what format I try. I can copy it, but the copies don't open either. I tried deleting documents in pages as well as the app and reinstalling it, but nothing has helped.

Try quitting Pages and then reset your iPad.
Double click the Home button to show the screen with running and recently used apps. Each app icon will have a sample page above it. Flick up on the page (not the app icon) and the page will fly away and the app icon will disappear. This quits that app.
Then reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • HT4889 i suddenly can´t copy file from my mac to the time machine. Why?

suddenly i cant copy files/movies from my macbook pro to my time machine anymore. Do anybody know how to make this possible again?

Have you logged on with a different username.. ?? That will block access using the previous user login.
The best bet is to fully reboot everything.. wonderful things happen when you clear all the cobwebs.. old logins.. etc.
If you still have issues, come back to us. Although I find it hard to imagine the TC will automagically change security settings. Make sure you login to the Mac with the same username as you did when you moved the files to the TC.

  • Can't copy files to/from Mac or PC

    Hello,
Our company just received the Excite 10 LE (16GB). It's our first Android based tablet so I'm just getting my feet wet with setting it up. Some minor glitches along the way (tablet freezing up) but otherwise, it's coming along.
One thing we need to do is be able to copy files back and forth to the Tablet. There was no documentation included that even mentions how to do this! While it may exist somewhere buried, it should be in a more prominent location. It does mention how to back up data to Google and/or an SD card but that's not what I want to do right now.
But anyway, I found instructions online provided by Google on how to do regular file transfers. But for some reason, it is not working. I plugged in the tablet using the  supplied USB cable and it did not get recognized on a PC or a Mac. For the Mac, I  previously downloaded the Android File Transfer App which installed just fine. But it does not see anything connected (even after unplugging/replugging. The PC did not mount it like a hard drive either. The tablet does charge when plugged in so it is getting power.
So am I doing something wrong or is there an incompatibility with the device? I know it's brand new and all that, but not being able to transfer files is a major problem. If anyone can point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Ah, interesting! I was not aware of that. I think I tried it first with the USB cable that it came with (the AC adapter cable). That was what the instructions I found said to do. I did try the mini-USB cable I had lying around, but that was before I installed the Android Transfer app.
So I just tried it again now (post installation) and it IS showing up in the File Transfer app. I'll have to try the same thing on the PC with this cable. I guess that was really the issue - the cable being used.
Very odd that this tablet would need 2 separate USB cables but I'm glad it works now.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Can't copy files to another Mac on network (Yosemite to Yosemite)

For years I've had no trouble copying files back and forth across my home network, but after recently upgrading (via fresh install) to Yosemite on my desktop, I can no longer copy files to my MacBook Pro. This is a simple drag-and-drop to a mounted network drive.
Specifically, the copy dialog box appears, but as it finishes, I get an error message and the transfer is cancelled.
I've tried changing the permissions, making the destination a Shared Folder, and messing around in every way I can think of. I've never had this problem with any other version of OS X or with any other computers. This is a major disruption to my workflow — has anyone experienced this lately?
My workaround for the moment is to copy to a NAS device, and then copy down from the other computer. But this transfer is much slower and requires me to touch both computers to make it happen. That, at least, proves that both systems are capable of copying files via network, just not from desktop to laptop in this instance.
    Please help!

For whatever reason, the problem seems to have righted itself. From what I can tell, I did four things:
Delete all `.DS_store` files on both computers.
Run DiskWarrior on both computers, booking from the USB thumb drive and performing operations on the system drives.
Mount both volumes on opposing computers. Don't attempt any copy or move actions until both systems are connected to one another.
(The one which I feel worked) Enable *both* SMB and AFP networking formats. Both computers should have both options checked. Screenshot below
If it's not one of those above options, I have no idea why, but it works for now.

  • Permissions problem copying files between two Macs

I've run into a strange problem when trying to copy files between two networked Macs. Some background facts: We have two Macs at home each with three accounts. Two of the accounts are regular user accounts (my wife's and mine, call them "K" and "B" for short) and the third is an administrator account (we'll call it "A"). I have a .Mac account, which I use to sync between the two Macs. The other accounts do not. The user accounts B & K were initially set up on the second Mac via the Migration Assistant, copying over files and settings. The administrator account was not.
The problem I've run into is that if I am logged in as either user B or K on the local Mac, connect to the remote Mac as the corresponding user, and try to copy files into a folder owned by that same user on the remote Mac, I get a series of three dialog boxes with error messages:
    1) "You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named ..." (stop/continue)
    2) "The item ... contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?" (stop/continue)
    3) "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."
If I go all the way through this hitting continue / OK on each, what shows up on the remote computer at the end is an empty file with the name and filetype of the local file that I was trying to copy, but of zero length.
This only happens when I'm copying from (local.B -> remote.B) or (local.K -> remote.K). It does not happen if I try any of the other pairwise combinations (assuming that I've authenticated properly): (local.B -> remote.K or remote.A), (local.K -> remote.B or remote.A), (local.A -> remote.B, remote.K or remote.A). It happens regardless of which Mac is local and which is remote.
I'm a little baffled. I've tried to search for this on Apple Discussions and other forums, but either haven't been using the right keywords or am coming up blank.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Bob

borbye is correct that this will remedy the problem but there is a way to do it and have your account work. after changing the user UID and group UID to 501 you will have to restart. then when you log on your home folder will still be your default but you will not have any access. Since you are still an admin you can change that. right click on the home folder and select get info click arrow for sharing and permissions. Your old UID account will show up as _unknown delete this user and add your user to it giving yourself read and write privilege. click on the cog on the bottom and select apply to enclosed items. A warning box will appear stating that this process cannot be undone do you wish to proceed? click yes and a status bar will come up. once the bar is gone the process is complete. since you didn't have access to your home folder you cannot save your settings, this is a good thing since your account will not look remotely the same as yours most likely. all you have to do now is logout and then back in. Your account will look as it did before the change with all the access settings and so forth as before the change... minus some permissions due to the overwrite. It's a minor repair to the permissions to some shares considering you will be able to now move files to and these shares without the permissions alert that only creates a 4kb file instead of the real thing. Takes 5 minutes at most. Have fun.

  • .wmv files on intel macs

Is there a way to play windows media files on an intel based mac?

Is there a way to play windows media files on an

I would recommend you use Videolan's VLC Player, which has now been updated.
This is now Intel Mac compatible and can play many different file formats including ASF, WMV and WMA.

  • Web packaged file on Intel Mac

Can some one please help, Ive got a training application
running in a web browser (Authorware 7) for both PC and Mac. The
Authoware lesson sends data out of Authoware via PostURL to a asp
page which then puts it into a access database. All works fine on
PC and on the old Macs powermac i think there called, but as soon
as i run the lessons on the new Intel Macs in Rosetta mode, i cant
get any data out of the lesson, it seems to block calling the url,
ive tried the Readurl command aswell.
It seems that Rosetta and the web player arnt playing nice
    together.
    Please Please help.

I think there's a known, and unresolved (and likely to remain
unresolved) issue with PostURL on a Mac. In fact, I'm kinda
    surprised it
seems to work on a non-Intel Mac as this issue has been
    around for a
    long time.
    This page:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/authorware/releasenotes/5/releasenotes_5.htm#problems
indicates the issue is just with IE on the Mac (and for 5.2,
    though I
don't doubt the issue remains with version 7).
So I'd recommend you make a simple test application that just
    does a
PostURL to the ASP page and test it on both platforms. Does
    it work on
the Mac and not the PC? If so, then the common workaround is
    to
restructure the ASP page to accept 'GET' statements instead
    of 'POST'
statements and use the Authorware ReadURL function instead. I
    know
you've said you did, but I'd test both thoroughly as, if
    neither works,
then you're pretty much out of luck unless you can use a
    third-party
    Xtra, like SecureNet

  • How can I copy files from my Mac to my external HD?

I just bought a MacBook Air. Now I want to copy some files from my Mac to my external HD. And I cannot do it. Maybe the problem is on the authorization. How can I fix it?

what format is your external drive in?  if it's on a NTFS format - it become read only.
format/erase your external drive to exFAT if you share this drive with a Windows PC.
If you're not sharing this drive with a PC - then format it to Mac OS extended journaled.
use disk utility to do this.
before you format your drive - make sure whatever files you have in it are backed up.

  • PDF files created on PC don't open properly on Mac

Our homeowner's association has documents on a website that is serviced by a Homeowners Association company.  The documents are PDF documents that have been created at various times but primarily on PCs.  Some of them open correctly on my MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.4) using Adobe Reader (9.4.0) while others appear to open the pages (multiple page documents show all of the pages) but with blank pages.  Of course, when I contact the local administrator, he says I should get a PC.  I was wondering if the difficulty is with my Adobe Reader or perhaps the way in which the documents were converted from Word to a PDF file.

    Beverly A Johnson wrote:
when I contact the local administrator, he says I should get a PC.
I certainly hope he isn't serious, if so, I'd put the blame squarely on him for producing a non-compliant PDF. That is a seriously ignorant statement on his part (no, I'm not defending Macs, I run many different platforms).
First thing to be sure of an a Mac is that Mac Preview isn't accidently opening the file instead of Reader. I assumed you checked that already.
Second, if you are opening it within a browser by clicking on a link try right>click (or Control>Click) to get the dialog that has an option to save the file to your hard drive. Once saved, open Reader and use File>Open to open the PDF that you saved to your machine.
    Does that work?
If not, with the PDF open go to File>Properties>Description. What does it say next to Application. Then go to File>Properties>Description Advanced. What does it say next to PDF producer and PDF version?

  • Wind Vista SP2. iTunes 10.6.3.25. I'm trying to Consildate my Music Library on this PC, and get the error: "Copying files failed, because you don't have permission to change your iTunes Media folder or a folder within it."  My admin user has Full Control

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I did what you suggested on all three folders: The main Music folder on the Mac hard disk, on the iTunes folder on the external 160GB Hard drive which contains the current media content and on the new 2TB hard disk on which I created a new media folder. I selected permission for myself which were already read+write and chose the apply to enclosed items on all three folders. I then changed the permission for others to read+write and applied to enclose items also an all three folders.
    But it didn't solve anything.
Here's what happens: I choose the new directory in iTunes preferences (the media folder on the 2TB disk) I then go to File > Library > Organize Library and then choose Consolidate files. A window pops up and says copying "filename" with a progression bar underneath but the filename never changes. Instead the beachball appears when the mouse pointer hoovers over iTunes. Upon pressing the iTunes icon in the Dock it says that iTunes is not responding. At this point there's 2 different ways:
A - If I then force quit iTunes the iTunes window disappears but the application does not close. When I want to eject the 2TB disk it says it's being used by another application. Only when I cut the power to the 2TB disk does iTunes fully close. A window then pops up and says that the drive was not put away properly etc.
B - if I cut the power to the drive without force quitting iTunes, a window appears with the said: "Copying failed because you don't have permissions to change iTunes media folders etc." iTunes remains open and fully functional.

  • 'Finder wants to make changes' when copying files between two Macs

    Hey all,
I've read a few versions of this problem on the forums here but haven't tracked down a solution.
I have two Macs on the same network – I recently got a second-hand Mac Pro, and my Macbook Air. The computers are both on the network and can browse their respective folders and the like, but when I go to copy or sync files between the computers, I get a file permission issue.
Finder on either computer prompts: 'Finder wants to make changes. Enter your password'. At the same time a corrupted version of the file copies to the other computer but with 0 bytes that doesn't open...
Has anyone solved this issue before – it'd be greatly appreciated to hear any approaches!

On the laptop I got 513
Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Can't open Keynote files on my Mac - but they open fine on other Macs

+I had this query in the Keynote 8 section, but was getting no replies - so I'm posting it here too.+
If I attempt to open any Keynote files, I now get this error message.
    "Can't open file "+File path: file name+.key"
To clarify, the text in italics above shows the actual file's file path and name.
The file will then will appear on screen, but is unresponsive to any clicks or menu commands.
The files will open successfully on other Macs, so they aren't corrupt.
The same applies when creating a new file from Keynote: All screen menus / buttons are dead - all I can do is drag the main window around the screen.
I've tried to reinstall Keynote, but this hasn't resolved the problem. I've checked that I'm running the latest version (4.04 of Keynote 8) - and I have nearly 12gb free on my hard disc. I've also thrown out any Keynote related files I could find in library or preferences in case some application settings had been corrupted. (Having said that, I don't know if I caught them all - as I just used Spotlight to find files with the name Keynote.)
Are there specific preference / system files that I should look for and dump? Is there an easy way to do a complete uninstall of Keynote so I can try another install? Or is this a symptom of something else?
    All ideas gratefully appreciated!

All the issues I describe in my questions around this time re: Keynote were actually symptoms of a soon-to-die laptop. The Hard Disc was corrupting, and Keynote was the first application to be affected.

  • Help! Jpg, Png, Tiff files creating on MAC won't open on PC

Ok...I'm new to MAC and I'm creating all of my images in Photoshop as i have always done on my PC. But now when i save anything as a JPG or PNG nobody using a PC can open them.
I've checked the file extension, etc. I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.
    Please Help

How does one see a JPG image in a plain text message? HTML vs. plain text is not the problem. The problem is that Yahoo (and many other mail clients) can choke on Mac Finder and Photoshop previews and extended metadata in the JPG file if it is not prepared and sent properly.
Try these three steps one at a time until you find success...
    1) Use the 'save for web' function in Photoshop to produce your JPG files.
    2) Make sure that your mail program is set to send a type of MIME encoding compatible with the recipient's system (check the box for 'Windows-friendly attachments').
    3) If you are not presenting graphic HTML mail with images and don't care that the recipient has to download and extract a package of images, wrap your JPG files in a ZIP archive.
