Copies of Indesign books works different on MAC and PC ?

Hello everyone,
i try to follow many discussion about how to create a clean copy of an Indesign book indb (with different chapters which are individual indesign files) with no link to the old one.
I found many tricks like changing the name of the original folder or packaging the book for print, but i'm not really satisfy by this way.
The first way forced me to change the name of the original file each time i want to make a clean copy and the second way will not keep the structure of my folder and subfolders which are not included in the package.
It seems the real concern is more about how Indesign is able to manage absolute and relative path, and i also found some people asking Indesign only works with absolute path.
But, after many trials on Mac and PC, i was so surprised to check that on my MAC, thinks are working very well, when i make a copy of the original book folder exactly in the same location, the copy is not linked to the original file (that's what i want) !!!
But on PC it doesn't, the copy of the book is still linked to the original files.
Can someone tell me the difference between MAC and PC ?
Is it an option in Indesign to change that ? or is it related to th OS file system ?

Hi Peter,
I opened the two books in indesign to compare the paths of the files in the books.
I just simply move the mouse over the indesign file in the book panel to check the path that appears in the yellow tooltip.
For example :
for the original BOOK_TECH.indb, the path of the file Trims.indd in the DOC_TECH folder is : /Users/UserName/Documents/DOC_TECH/MAIN_FILES/Trims.indd
for the copy BOOK_TECH.indb, the path of the file Trims.indd in the DOC_TECH2 folder is : /Users/UserName/Documents/DOC_TECH2/MAIN_FILES/Trims.indd
Another way to be sure of what i'm saying here is to open the file trims.indd in the original book and the same file in the copy. You will get 2 different files opened in Indesign with the same name of course.
I also try with a Mac book pro running MAC OS X 10.6.5, but it doesn't work (you will get the link to the original one). It seems to work or not, depending the OS
i'm curious to know why it is working on MacOS x 10.9 and not 10.6 and windows. Maybe there is a way to fix it with the OS settings ?
If you have the right answer, just let me know, because it could help a lot of people.

WARNING: FORMATTING A DRIVE ERASES IT COMPLETELY !!
If you need to carry large files (e.g., larger than about 4GB) back and forth, you may need ExFAT. Otherwise MS-DOS works for smaller files.
The Mac can Read, but not write Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) without an add-on program such as Paragon NTFS.

How come a USB will work with both Mac and Windows (as in that there are already files from Windows and Mac can still read and write onto it) but a external Hard Drive won't (as in there are files from Windows on there but Mac can read but not write)?

I have a Seagate Drive that I'm hoping to copy some movies from my Mac onto (because it only has a 512 SSD and I'd rather keep that empty and handy for more readily needed files) but it won't work. It shows up as a drive when connected (with the orange USB drive icon popping up) and is appropirately labeled "FreeAgent Drive", but when I try to copy files onto it it won't work. There are already windows files on there, such as some windows backups and lot's and lot's of pictures and videos. However, I have several USBs which already have windows files on them (namely movies, music, and other stuff) and copying and stuff works fine. Why won't it work with this hard drive and would work with USBs? Please help me out here guys, I am not experienced with Hard disks and formatting and stuff like that. 10 points for whoever helps me out the most. Thanks.

We will need to reformat your EXT, but it will then work on both Mac and Win
Connect the drive to your Mac, open disk utility
Go to the partiton tab and select '1' ... format should be ExFAT ... in options select MBR
Format the drive
It should now work on both OSs; report back

Formatting a lacie hard drive to work on a Mac and Pc

I'm trying to get a lacie hard drive to run with both a Mac and PC. I'm formatting the drive using FAT32 on the PC but it's limiting me to 32Gb partitions. I do have another Maxtor drive with a 111Gb Fat32 partition and the Mac allows me to read and write to it, so I know it's possible. Any ideas how to format the drive with just one large partition. Unlinking copies of Indesign Books

I have an InDesign CS6 Book. I need to use "Save Book As" to make a copy of it, and I need to slightly expand the trim size of the new copy for a different use. I don't want this change to happen in the old copy. I notice that changes you make to one book's documents are reflected in copies of that book. How do I turn this off and "unlink" the two copies? Thank you.

Either make a new .indb file and add the copies of the prioginal compoent files files to it (and delete the copied .indb file so you don't accidentally use it and change something you didn't intend to change). or Package the book to make a copy of everything and automatically update the links in the package to the new copies automatically.

Reviews different on Mac and on iPhone

Why do the iTunes store in iTunes on the Mac and the app store on the iPhone show different sets of reviews for exactly the same app?
That does not make sense to me ...
I've just checked that a review that I wrote for an app appears on the iPhone app store, but not in iTunes on my Mac.

iCloud syncs all your contacts with all your devices.
However, if you are using a second service for syncing contacts, you need some little extra work.
First things to do:
1. When You sync contacts via iCloud you must disable the sync via iTunes.
2. Check Address Book Preferences > Account to see if it syncs only with iClud or also with Google

I'm trying to share a set of Numbers projects between my MacBook and my iPhone.
I notice that iWork.com does NOT do what I am expecting from the Apple Video's : it only allows me to consult documents through Safari, but not to open one directly from iCloud.com in the appropriate app for editing ...
Through file sharing in iTunes it seems to work for one of the projects ... but another project which has multiple tabs and rather long tables doesn't open on my iPhone due to "unknown error" ...
Even then, the iTunes file sharing process can hardly be called seemless, and in no way even approaches what is suggested in the video's :
The video's suggest that when working on a file on one device, then picking up another device the file will show the changes ...
In reality here's what I have to do to make a change on the file on my Mac, share it with the iPhone, then change something on the iPhone and share it back with my Mac :
1. save the changes to the document
2. add the document to iTunes file sharing
3. sync my iPhone
4. open Numbers on my iPhone
5. add the document from iTunes
6. open it
7. make a change
8. sync the iPhone
9. choose "save as ..." in iTunes to overwrite the copy on my Mac
10. open the document in Numbers on the Mac
Guess what ... when making a new change, I have to go back in iTunes, delete the link to the document and add the document again in order to be able to share the change ...
I would expect the syncing with iTunes to at least take care of the file updating on the respective copies on Mac and iOS device ... apparently not so.
Anyone knows how to really make Documents In The Cloud work ?

Oops, I forgot a step between 7 and 8 ... before syncing the iPhone I need to explicitly send the document back to iTunes on the iPhone, or the changes won't come over at all ...
and then one more thing ... Numbers on iOS does NOT recognize a number of key features of the OSX app, such as conditional formatting ... so after editing my document on iOS and syncing it back to OSX on my Mac, all of those settings are lost (no more conditional formatting, have to do it all over again)

I can't get my new samsung hard drive to work with my mac and tv

I bought my first ever hard drive today. It is a Smasung M3 Portable 1.5 TB.
At first I plugged it in and it wouldn't let me drag anything from finder over to the hard drive. I did some research (googling) and followed the steps to change the format to 'Mac OS extended (Journaled)' which allowed me start dragging files across.
I then put a movie on the hard drive, waited for it to copy then plugged it into my TV (hoping to sit back and watch said movie). However the TV would not let me even open the hard drive.
I did some more "research" and read that if I changed the format to 'MS-DOS FAT' it would let me use the hard drive on Mac and PC. I tried that but still had the same trouble of the hard drive not working on the TV.
Basically, I want to use the hard drive as storage/ back up for my files BUT ALSO to put all of my movies on it and plug it into my TV.
Can someone please help me.
PS- I am not very tech savvy. I won't be able to do anything too technical.

Working on both Mac and PC, advice?

First of all, I hope this is an acceptable forum for this question, I figured licensing is the root of the 'problem' so might as well ask here.
I currently have a desktop PC with CS2 (I've also got MX 2004 of the other stuff), I really have no reason to upgrade these at this time
My problem: The school I am going to now pretty much requires you to get a laptop, and I think they have a partnership with Apple or something because that is all they have in the bookstore and I am 'strongly encouraged' to get one. I use a Mac at work so I'm aware of how cool they are for design etc, I'm fine with having to get one.
As you all know, there is no mac & pc option and I need to use both because honestly I don't really enjoy working on laptops when I am at home and there's a perfectly good desktop right there. The other side is I can't really NOT have it on the laptop because I'm a illustration/design/art/etc major and I will need these programs at school. I am also a rather poor student who can barely afford this required laptop, so I can't just straight up buy a new copy for the Mac. I read somewhere about cross upgrading, but then I'm out of luck on my PC. So what do you guys think I should do? Protest the laptop requirement? ;D
Oh and switching to a Mac desktop is not an option as I am also an avid video gamer, and well..the Mac is not up to snuff for that. That is also a lot of money to bypass one software issue.

Read through the manual as iphone will not allow syncing to some multiple contact/calendar programs.
You can only sync to ONE itunes library at a time on iphone. If you sync your itunes library at work, then go home and sync you iphone to your home itunes library, it will erase the work library from your iphone.

LINUX USB install (NOT LIVE) that works on a Mac and PC

I've installed linux on a USB and I can use it on any pc I want. I just change the boot device and I'm in my private linux os with all my stuff. But if I buy a macbook can I use it on a mac, how?
There are planty tutorials how to make a LIVE USB (boots using ram - like a LVIE CD), but nowhere I can find how to but an actuall install of linux from USB on a mac that also works on a PC, is that possible, it's just a key combination or a boot order in bios or is not posible at all?
I never had a mac in my life, forgive me if this is a simple "Just hit F2, stupid!" question.
Again no ISO, no LIVE, I want the install to have my stuff, I don't want to install flash and my stuff everytime I boot.

You can use a Linux Live USB or CD on any PC is because the hardware drivers are freely availalbe.
On Mac's that's just not the case, until later on someone who gives a ratts behind and runs Linux on a Mac, and is a command line guru can get them and publish them for others to use.
Also Mac's have all sorts of other drivers to control the fans, etc., that if one tries to boot off Linux causes issues.
Installing Linux on a Mac is a big no no, unless your a computer science graduate, because Linux installs it's Swap folder into the hidden EFI partition and reformats the Macintosh HD partiiton with OS X on it and other horrors as it's not a generic PC like people think it is.
You can install Linux into a virtual machine like virtualbox, then OS X is still controling the hardware and virtualbox is taking care of the under the hood things

Versions of Muse different between Mac and Windows

Me and a friend wanted to test Adobe Muse and we installed the 30 days trial version. I did it on my Mac. My friend on his Windows PC. I've tried Muse and when I wanted to show what I did to my friend, I went to him with the .muse file on a USB stick. We where very surprised that the Muse on the Windows PC couldn't open the file I've made on my Mac due to versioning problems. We compared the Muse versions and ... they are different (on Mac: 2014.2.0.569, CL 787027; on Windows: V 7.4 build 30, CL 784238). This is a problem since we wanted to develop both on the same site, of course not at the same time, but by passing the .muse file to one another.
Is this normal that versions between platforms are not in sync?

Hi Marc,
The version of Muse in the windows machine of your friend is not the latest release, this could be because of previous installation or the technical specification of the windows machine is not met.

I need to try it on my mac before I implement it on other macs and the pcs. The directory placement area was a little vag so I tried it here.
I placed the file in: HD/Users/{me}/Library/Application Support/Firefox/chrome
restarted firefox. Did not work.
Does any one know if the above into is correct and if I placed it in the correct area on the mac?
This is the info I got to place the same file on the pc:

Can I format an iPod to work on a mac and a windows?

I have a mac and a dell and I was wondering if it is possible to do something so that I can use it on both. If so, what is that?

Format it on the Windows PC (with iPod Updater), and it will work on the Mac as well, although it is unsupported by Apple. Music transfer will also be a bit slower on the Mac, but is still pretty fast. If you want to syncronize the music between the two computers as well, it gets more tricky, because iTunes only syncronizes one way - from the computer to the iPod and not the other way around. There are solutions for this, though, but as a start, I would not use the auto-sync feature in iTunes.
