Coping Photos Between Events

For some reason I am unable to move photos between events or move file directly from the iPhoto window to the desktop. The normally + sign that signifies coping does not appear when you try to drag the images around. Is there a setting somewhere that stops this?
Help please!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It's a font issue, specifically Helvetica Neu. Open Font Book (in your Applications folder), find the Helvetica Neu, deactivate it and then reactivate it.
If you don't have that font then you'll have to find it on your system install disk with Pacifist and install it. Most times it's there and just needs to be jump started.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Can't Drag Photos Between Events

Having just upgraded to iPhoto 11, I find I can't drag photos between events. The help info seems to be the same as the prior version, but when I select two events, then select a photo and drag it, the photo springs back to it's current location.
Any preferences or techniques I'm missing? Thanks.

    Terence,
Thanks for your suggestions and sorry for the confusion; I misspoke in the sentence you quoted from my last post.
I don't want to drag photos internally within an event, I want to drag them from one event to another.
In prior versions of iPhoto I could do this in Events mode (perhaps Photos mode as well, but I never tried). I opened two or more Events simultaneously, highlighted the photos in one event and dragged and dropped them anywhere inside another. Now, I can only do this by dropping on the event title.
iPhoto 11 help topic "Move photos between events" steps it out. The pertinent points are:
Select two Events: the one you want to move photos from and the one you want to move those photos to.
TIP: Drag your pointer to enclose two Events that are next to one another. To select two Events that aren’t adjacent, click the first Event to select it, and then hold down the Command key as you click the second Event.
    Double-click one of the Events.
Both Events open. The photos they contain appear in the window below their Event titles.
Select the photos you want to move, and drag them to the Event you want to add them to.
It doesn't work for me, and I'm wondering what's changed in iPhoto 11, or does my software have a bug? Thanks.

  • Is there a way to move photos between events in Search mode?

I have just switched over to iPhoto on my new Mac (from PS Elements 5 on my old PC) and I am trying to get everything organized again. All the files have been put in Events, but not always theEvenst I want them in. What I keep wanting to do is run a search on file names (which works beautifully!) and then move some of the resulting items from one event into another. This doesn't seem to be possible, though. Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I completely agree with Larry's comments about Albums being a far superior method of organisation. However, to move files from a search you can use Flagging:
Simply Flag the files you want to move then, from the Events menu, choose either: 'Create Events from Flagged Photos' or "Add Flagged Photos to Selected Events' as you require.
Here's a tip - as these things are easy to make a mistake on: -z will undo the last thing you did.

  • Moving Photo's between events

    Ok i'm beat
How do you move individual photo's between events
The open event in separate window has gone in 11 so that option is no more
I know there is an option to copy & paste but it is working at all it allows to copy but the past option is greyed out I have also tried CMD + C CMD + V still nothing
    Any Help Please
    Thanks Guys

This worked for me (or at least something like this :-p).
Select the two events between which you would like to exchange photos. Double click one of the selected events. (You should see a "zoom" of only the two selected events.) Select the photo you want to move; drag it to the other event. (Hmm... Looks like you might need to drag the photo to the title of the "new" event.)

  • Difference between Events and Photos

I'm an iMac noob, so bear with me I just moved 12,000 photos from my PC to Mac, all good.
Can anyone simply explain the difference between "Events" and "Photos"? When I click on "Photos", it seems to open every folder of photos I moved over, is there any way to collapse all of these without having to collapse each individually?
I am trying to organize folder and albums, a big task...but trying to figure out the difference between "Events" and "Photos" and the purpose/usage/advantage of each. They seem to be somewhat of a duplication.
Nobody said the pc to mac migration would be simple...
    Thanks in advance.

in the photo view to the left of each "event title" there is a little gray triangle - depress the option key and click it - all events will open or close with the click

THey are different ways of viewing your photo library and can have different sorts (view menu => sort) and in photos view you can turn off event titles so you have one giant bucket of photos sorted as you requested
And you probably should look at keywords and smart albums as an organization aid too

  • How can I view my photos in "Events" like in iPhoto? How can I create events?  I have 55,000 photos and 1700 events so the only way I can possibly manage my photos is using events that are one slide in size.

I have 55,000 images organized into about 1700 events. The only reasonable way to view my library is using events in iPhoto where each event has one image That still leaves 1700 images to sort through but that is a lot easier than 55,000 images.  In the side bar is a folder with "iPhoto Events" but those views still show all of the slides.  How can I create events and view my photos as events as in iPhoto?  Events are critical for large libraries and has been my primary way to sort images.
    Thanks!

I had a problem a couple of months ago when iPhotos suddenly rearranged the order of my Events (Why won't iPhoto let me arrange my photos?) .  I was told "Use albums not events - events are not a good way to organize - albums and folder are designed for organisation and are very flexible".
Haha!  I should have paid attention and read between the lines!  My iPhotos were highly organised groupings - not according to date but the way I wanted them - and it was so easy to do!  I see now that if I had them all in albums, as per the Apple Apologist suggestion, I wouldn't have this unholy mess I have been left with just to make iPhone & iCloud users happy.  I am now going through Photos and making Albums (of what used to be in my Events)  ... maybe I'll get this finished before they do another non user friendly update!

  • HT1229 How do you transfer photos to external backup and keep the photos in events with event name or with description name. Each time I have tried to transfer them they only transfer with a jpg number so you don't know what photos are what.

How do you transfer photos to external backup and keep the photos in events with event name or with description name. Each time I have tried to transfer them they only transfer with a jpg number so you don't know what photos are what. When you have several thousand photos it is difficult to determined what is what.
Why does iPhoto have the ability to put photos in events and to give them descriptions if it doesn't transfer this info with the photo. I want to back my photos up to an external drive.

The simplest way to achieve what you want is to back up the iPhoto Library. That will get everything.
You sem to be exporting from iPhoto to the Finder. The Finder does not have the same organisation capabilities as iPhoto. If you're going to do that you need to understand some of the differences between the two.
Event Name will become  Folder Name.
'Description Name' I guess is the Title you give the Photo
Jpeg Number is the File Name assigned by your camera.
    So: File -> Export
    Set your Kind to Jpeg
    Select your preferred Quality
Check the Boxes at 'Titles and Descriptions' and Location Information
    Under FIlename select 'Use Title'
Click on Export. In the Next Window choose a New Folder as your export destination and then Name that as you prefer

  • Organizing photos between devices in iPhoto

    Hi guys,
I am greatly confused and really hope you can help me out! I have searched for hours now and I am still not sure of the answer, so even though it might be answered in other threads I still hope you will help me...
I have and iPhone and a Macbook. Between these two devices I want to share and organize my photos taken with the iPhone. First of all the photos are obviously saved in the camera roll - and since I have enabled photoStream they are saved here as well.
For a while ago I read that to organize the photos I should syncronize with iPhoto, organize into albums and syncronize back to the phone. That kinda works, however now the photos are takin up space 3 times! That is very confusing and a waste of space!
What I really want is actually to have the photos in the camera roll until I have organized them into albums and then I want to be able to delete them from the camera roll. That way I ensure that I have organized all photos.
I really appreciate any tips as this is really frustrating...

And what is the difference between events and albums in iPhoto? I get that one solution is to import all photos to iPhoto and then organize the photos into albums. However they still apear in events - and with all these events ordered by dates how will I ever ensure that I have organized all images into albums?
iPhoto does not store photos. It only references photos in your camera roll, in events synced to your iDevice from your Mac, uploaded using the camera connection kit, or imported by other apps.
    See the iPhoto Help: http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnkbc26e276
iPhoto will not use additional space, if a photo is used in an album and also appears in an event or the camera roll.
What I really want is actually to have the photos in the camera roll until I have organized them into albums and then I want to be able to delete them from the camera roll. That way I ensure that I have organized all photos.
What kind of albums are you asking about? The albums that iPhoto creates by tagging, or the abums you create in the Camera Roll?  Either way, these albums do not store the photos, they only group them  differently for easy access. When you delete the photos from your camera roll, the photos will vanish from the albums as well, because they are one and the same image.
Anyway, it is no good idea to delete the photos from the Camera Roll. The Camera Roll is the central sharing place of your iPhone. Other apps can access your photos in the Camara Roll, the Camera Roll can be downloaded to your computer, the Camera Roll is backed up in your iCloud backup.
Should I rather organize only in events and not use albums?
Use the camera roll and events to store all your photos, and use albums to create selections for special purposes to easily access them and retrieve them.
First of all the photos are obviously saved in the camera roll - and since I have enabled photoStream they are saved here as well.
The camera roll stores the photos, but the Photo Stream is just a temporary buffer to share the photos. Don't rely on Photo Stream to keep the photos for ever. It will only keep the most recently added photos and no more than a thousand photos on your iPhone.
For a while ago I read that to organize the photos I should syncronize with iPhoto, organize into albums and syncronize back to the phone. That kinda works, however now the photos are takin up space 3 times! That is very confusing and a waste of space!
The general idea of that advice is to keep the photos off your phone:
Organize them on your mac, store all photos on your mac, and back them up regularly, so that you have them safe.
Then delete the photos from your phone to free space.
Now create albums on your mac with your most important photos that you want to have on your iPhone as well and regularly sync your current selection of favorite photos to your iPhone.
What may be confusing for you, is that you are trying to achieve something, that the two versions o iPhoto on your mac and your iPhone are not intended for and do not support well - two keep two photolibraries in sync. The apps support sharing of selected photos, but not syncing libraries. So have one well organized library on your mac, and share to your iPhone what you want on the phone as well, for example by setting up shared photostreams or syncing with iTunes.

  • Organizing photos by events

I am new to mac and iphoto. When I watched the online tutorial on iphoto, it said I could organize my photos by events, but I do not have and events option in my iphoto program under my library icon. How do I get that icon?

    cindybrown
You're using iPhoto 6, Events are a feature of iPhoto 7.
Rolls in iPhoto6 are very similar to Events, just not automatic.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.

  • Organizing photos in events that match originals

I cleaned up(crop, delete bad ones, rename files) my photos in "events" but it didn't change in "originals". how do i get that to match?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Do you mean the Originals folder in the Finder?
The strict relationship between the structure of the folders in the Finder and the Rolls/Events in the iPhoto Window changed in iPhoto 09 and no one outside of Apple knows why.
But it's really just another example of how iPhoto does not support you accessing the files via the Finder. Never has.
You can achieve more by accessing the files in the supported ways: Select the Event in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export.
You then can select among the options under Kind:
Originals will get you exactly that: the original files. These will be the contents of the Event as per the iPhoto Window regardless of the arrangement of files in the underlying file structure.
Current will get you the most recent versions of the files: a mix of edited and unedited pics. Again, the contents as per the iPhoto Window. There is simply no way to get this by accessing the files in the Finder.
All the other versions allow you to write the metadata - tiles, keywords, descriptions and locations - to the files on export - again, something not possible with accessing the files via the Finder.
    Some notes:
Deleting: Did you empty the iPhoto trash?
Renaming: In the iPhoto Window you +add a title+ to a Photo. There is no way to rename a file in iPhoto, the nearest you can do is use the title as filename when exporting.
    Some FYI:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Cut and Paste between Events not working

Using iPhoto11, I can drag and drop pictures between events, no problem...but Cut and Paste does not work.
I select a photo and cut in event A, go to event B, I right click and get a PAST button, It even clicks but nothing happen, the Cut image never gets pasted.
Is this a bug? whats the solution?

To delete the test user, go to the black apple menu, click on system preferences, then on accounts. From an administrator account, click on the "test" user and hit the "-" key. when the dialog box comes up, hit "delete the home folder" and it will be gone.
For the startup disk issue you should repair permissions. From the finder, click on the "go" menu, then on "utilities". Select disc utility. Select your HD and click on repair disk permissions. This will take several minutes (5 or more).
If that has not done the trick then you may need to reset the parameter ram (PRAM).  Turn your computer off. When you turn it back on, simultaneously hold 4 keysL command-option-p-r. Keep holding them. The startup chime will ring. Continue to hold until you have heard the chime at least 2 times (more won't help or hurt). Then release.

  • Move photos between rolls

    Hi,
I don't know why this is so difficult but I just want to do the most basic thing. In photos view, I want to create a roll (new category of pictures). Then I want to move photos from one roll to another. I can drag them up or down but I will move to the top with my pictures selected and it will move a little bit but then stop. I can't go up all the way to a different roll.
I tried cut and paste but that didn't work either.
    Thanks in advance

You're absolutely right, Apple isn't that dumb and I have no difficulty dragging and dropping between Events, though you seem to, so I suggested a way for that works for those who have problems with dragging and dropping.
d then, when adding photos, I can't drag a photo to a specific event. I would have to drag it to iPhoto, it will create a new roll, then go to that roll, flag the photos in that roll, go back to events, add flag photos to that event, then go to that event, find the flagged photos and then unflag them.
Well, no matter what you cannot import to a specific Event. Every import creates at least one new Event. Of course, the most recent Event is easy to find: just click on that 'Last Import' on the left hand pane.
Unflagging is pretty straightforward too. Try clicking on the 'Flagged Photos' on the left hand pane (Hint: it's directly below 'Last Import'), command-a selects all, and unflag them.
    Or, practise dragging and dropping.

  • How to quickly compare photos in events and albums?

    Hi there,
Was wondering - I have a ton of photos from several years in my iphoto events/general photos, of which the good ones are arranged neatly into iphoto albums.
Problem is, I want to clean up my iphotos and get rid of all the extra photos that aren't very good and didn't make it into an album. In other words, if the photo was worth keeping, it's already in an album, so I just want to delete everything from my events that's not in an album. However, is there any easy way to go through the events and find out which photos are already in an album so that I can delete them if they aren't? I understand that if I delete photos from events, it will also delete it from the album, so that makes it really annoying and tricky.
It would take so, so long to go through every single photo and flip back and forth between events and albums to see which ones are in albums and which ones aren't. From what I can tell (unless I'm wrong), I can't even open two windows of iphoto so I can compare side by side.
If anyone knows a solution, I would be very grateful.
    Thanks,
    Tracy

    File -> New Smart Album
Album -> Is not -> Any
    will find them for you.
Option-command-delete will move them to the trash
    Empty the iPhoto trash.
Empty the System trash and they are gone.
One tip: delete in batches of about 100 or so. Deleting more at a time can cause problems.

  • Collapse photos into events

In iPhoto '11 (9.2.1) when I had the Photo slected on the left bar, the photos were collapsed to groupings (note : this is not in the Events pane).
I could expand or collapse a group into thumbnails and easily move photos between groups. However, some one clicked on someting and now all 4000 photos are displayed individually by thumbnails. There are no longer any groups to collapse.
How do I return Photos to the orignal groupings?
Also, when I am in the Events pane, how do I transfer a single photo from one Event to another.
Clickiing on the Event expands it alone - dragging the Event merges the entire events.
(this used to be easy in iPhoto '09) Stop making progrqams less user freindly!

Your welcome - however that is it...
Following step 1 shows 4000 thumbnail pictures with titles.
That's  because  you've gone View Menu -> Titles, whereas I suggest going View Menu  -> Event Titles (It's 4 from the top.)
n the Events pane, Selecting the target event is possible - but that deselects the original ...
It doesn't matter that it deselects the original, because you've flagged the Original
...and there is no Move option under the Events pull down menu.
    There is on mine:
Add Flagged Photos to Selected Event
It's 5 from the top in the Events Menu.

  • Relationship between Events, Album & Web Gallery

Hi, I'm new to iPhoto 08. Please bear with me if my question sounds stupid
What is the relationship between Events, Album and Web Gallery?
    1. From Events, when I publish them to Web Gallery, does both environment auto sync with each other?
    2. From Events, I create Album, then I publish to Web Gallery, do all 3 environments auto sync?
    3. Why use Album when I can choose Option 1?
If I want to keep it simple and just want to put my photos to the web gallery, do I just use Option 1?
    Thanks heaps.
    Cheers,
    Thomas

    Thomas
Nothing - except Smart Albums - auto updates. If you add pics to an Event or Album you'll need to then update the corresponding Web Galleries.
Albums are infinitely more useful than Events for organising your pics.
Events are simple, date-based folders. Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents). However, Events cannot be nested, for instance and are very inflexible. A pic cannot be in more than one Event without duplicating the actual file.
Albums can be nested inside folders, can be created by drag and drop, or any of the Smart Album criteria - including but not limited to Date, Keywords, Ratings, even camera model. Like Playlists in iTunes, Albums are virtual a pic can be in 1,10 or 100 albums with no wasted disk space.
