Copy a cd or dvd

Can anyone tell me how I can make a copy of a cd or dvd? I have the super drive.

This is from Disk Utility help.
Insert the CD or DVD disc in your computer's optical drive and select it in the list of disks and volumes.
Choose File > New > "Disk Image from [name of disc]."
Type a name for the disk image.
Choose "compressed" or "read-only" from the Image Format pop-up menu.
Choose "compressed" to create a smaller disk image, and choose "read-only" to create a disk image that's quicker to create and open.
Click Save.
After Disk Utility creates the disk image, eject the original CD or DVD.
Select the disk image in the list of disks and volumes, and choose Images > Burn.
When the Burn Disc dialog appears, insert a blank CD or DVD, and then click Burn.

  • Cannot copy file from backup DVD to HD folder

Whenever I finish a project, I had burn the various files (movie, text, pictures, pages, etc.) onto DVDs to free up hard disk space for present projects. Usually, I would use a disk image to burn those DVDs. Recently, I needed material from those DVDs and I found that I could not copy them from the DVD to my work folders on my hard disk by dragging them from the DVD window to another open window. I could only do it the roundabout way of opening those files individually using the programmes (like pages, iPhoto, etc) and then use the 'Save As ...' option in the File Menu. It was a huge hassle. I then looked into my other DVDs and found that they were the same way. I find DVDs easier to manage. Is it because I am using disk images or is there something wrong in the way I burn the DVDs. Please advise

When I try to move the files from the Finder Window with the files on the DVD, I do not get the plus sign when I try to drag it to the desktop or any other window. Even when I try with the option key pressed, there is no plus sign with the mouse arrow. Someone suggested to use the terminal and I did. It was a hassle, though.

  • Make copy of Snow Leopard DVD

Ok, so this question might be a little out of scope for these forums, but its worth a shot.  I ordered my Snow Leopard update the other day, popped it in my macbook and tried to update.  I got through the first couple of steps, then it said installing... (or something similar).  The DVD drive mad a few weird sounds for about 10 minutes, all while the install status meter never moved. After the 10 minutes or so, I forget the exact message but it said something along the lines of it cannot read from the disc.  Eject, clean it and try again.  Which I did, but got the same message.  I looked at the disc, and it did not have a flawless shiny surface, but nor was it scratched to **** either.  I have seen discs in much worse shape that have worked perfectly.
I figured if I cant get the physical disc to work on my mac, i should try to make a copy or image of the disc that I can use.  I tried using my Mac to make an image and copy of it, but i get a similar error stating it cannot read from the source disc.  I also have a PC so I figured if I pop it in there to make a copy or image, maybe that optical drive can read the disc better.
So on to my question...  My PC "seems" to read the disc just fine but being a Windows platform, it only "sees" Boot Camp installation files.  Also, it says the size of the disc is only 780MB whereas on the Mac the size was 6+GB.  I can make a copy of the disc, but it only copies those 750MB worth of Boot Camp files, so when I put the copied disc in my Mac, it "sees" only the windows files and not the Snow Leopard files.  So, is there a way on my PC to make a bit by bit exact copy of the Snow Leopard disc?  Or can it be that the Snow Leopard part of the disc is really scratched that bad and my PC can not even read it either?

The PC cannot read the HFS file system, so it only "sees" the
boot camp (joliet) file system (SL DVD's contain a hybrid file system).
I windows program such as isobuster can make a perfect iso file copy
(provided the DVD is okay) of the SL hybrid install disk that can be
used to burn a backup copy of your SL DVD, either in windows
or Mac (with a good DVD Burner). SL DVD's are Dual Layer 8.3 GB
DVD's, so you will need the equivalent blanks.
I suspect your  Mac's optical drive is either dirty or failing, causing the
    read problems on the Mac.

  • Copying hangs when copying large files from DVD

I'm having trouble copying large files (>2GB) from DVDs to my built-in hard drive. When I drag the file icon from the DVD window to the desktop, the progress bar pops up almost immediately, and says "0 KB of 2.3 GB copied" and "Estimated time left: 1 minute" -- and then it just sits there, doing nothing. In some cases, after five minutes or so of inactivity, the copy finally begins... but most of the time it never does. Force-Quit doesn't help; the only way out is to do an emergency restart and try again.
This problem began when I upgraded to Tiger, and several members of my office group have been experiencing the same problem on their own computers as well.
I've poked around the forum looking for answers but the only thing I could find that looked related was a conflict between iSight and some third-party external hard drives... but none of us have iSight, and none of us are using third-party external drives, so clearly that's not the issue we'rehaving.
    Any help out there?

Michael, I occasionally notice anomolous behaviour when files get dragged between volumes. Mostly the copying window shows an accurate and immediate indication of what's going on, but other times it just looks like nothing's happening, the display never changes, yet, it is in fact copying the files over. Now, if you're copying 2gb files from DVD to HD, it's gonna take some time, more than 5 minutes, so I'm wondering how long you've left it before forcing it to quit?

  • Is it possible to copy 8mm video to DVD using my MacBook?

I want to copy 8mm vidoe to DVD using my MacBook. How can I tell if it is possible?

Do you mean 8mm film? Or "digital 8" video tape?
There are many services that can convert film to digital formats, but they're expensive. The most reasonably priced service I have found is called "Yesvideo". Google it.
If it's "digital 8" the way to do that is to import it from your "digital 8" camcorder using iMovie. Then you use iDVD to create a DVD.

  • Error when trying to copy files to a DVD+RW

I am unable to copy images to a brand new blank DVD+RW disc. I keep getting an error message "Current disc canot be overwritten...". Please help.

I can use Windows 7 to copy the picture files by opening the blank DVD and dragging the files to the disc folder; I just cannot see any way to use PSE 9 to copy the files because it keeps giving me the error message that the disc cannot be overwritten.
I would like to use PSE 9 to copy images to a DVD, rather than have to use windows.

  • I just bought a movie from itunes and can I copy it to my DVD to watch on a DVD player or only on an APPLE product?

I bought bought a movie in itunes and want to copy it to a DVD to play on a DVD player. Can I or must it be an APPLE product? If so, am disappointed since I can buy music and I own it and I paid full price to own it.

You own it but you don't own the copyright.
Copying movies in iTunes is not permitted.

  • Copying beta tapes to DVD

I have some old beta tapes that I want to copy to DVD. I've seen products such as myTV.pvr that allow connecting a VCR to iMac, then copy the file to DVD. A few questions:
    1. I understand that myTV.pvr creates files in MPEG-2 format. Does iDVD '08 support MPEG-2?
    2. If anyone else has experience with myTV.pvr or similar Mac-compatible products, I would be interested in any recommendations or experiences (good or bad).
    Thank you.

    G'day,
I've had a lot of success with mpeg streamclip (free software) which allows a multitude of format conversions, especially mpeg2 (DVD) to .dv which imovie 6 requires. You will also need to purchase the mpeg2 playback add-on from Apple (inexpensive). Using mpeg streamclip you can re-edit previously burnt DVDs by opening them in mpeg streamclip and then saving them as .dv files. You can then import the .dv files into imovie 6 and burn them from idvd. The added advantage of mpeg streamclip is that it allows you to capture video projects created on non-firewire devices (most current digital camcorder models). Hope this is of use.
    Cheers from Oz

  • Copy a Home iMovie DVD?

Sorry - this is a newbie question. I have only had my iMac a few months. I have tried Help and the forums but still don't know how to do this. I have made a home movie on my iMac. I just want to make some copies and mail them out. I don't want to re-render the movie every time I want to make a copy of the DVD. Surely I can make a copy of my own DVD - right?

Click here and follow the instructions, which will work with any unprotected DVD.

  • Copy  and burn personal DVDs  to play on  TVs?

I have personal DVDs of family members that I would like to share with other family members. Looking up possible procedures I see different approaches, some of which require download of an application. None of them seem particularly simple. Any suggestions?

If you have software app such as Roxio Toast, you can copy/burn your own content (not copy-righted) from one DVD to another very easily. Simply pop in the DVD, copy it, and then burn it to another DVD. You need to be careful as the content needs to be encoded to be able to be played on DVD players. I do not know if Disk Utility can actually do that - I know it can do so on DVDs being played on other computers, but I do not know if it can encode properly to be played on DVD players.

  • Copying friend's 'purchased' DVDs

I would like to copy a friend's DVD selection for personal use which he has purchased. Does the purchased DVD allow for legal copying, unlike the rental versions. Can this be done with my current software-iDVD 5(iLife 5) and 1.67 PowerBook G4 OS X 10.4.6, AND if so, what is the procedure to do so....

    Hello Robert:
What Mr Shippey meant is that this forum is to be used to discuss questions aimed towards iDVD questions-not questions regarding copying protected DVDs.
That is illegal and there is no Apple Discussion Forum that deals with illegal requests.
    Sorry about that-

If you want to back it up there, use the Disk Utility to create a disk image of it.
If you want to import its contents to iMovie, iTunes, or elsewhere, use MPEG Streamclip and Apple's MPEG-2 playback component to convert the VOB files on it to a different format.

  • Burn working 64-bit copy of Win 7 DVD without using Windows?

Is there a way that one can create the bootable 64-bit Windows 7 DVD—the one you have to create that won’t give you the CD-ROM boot-type message—without having to resort to a Windows machine, partition, or Windows-only program such as IMGburn to create it? Toast will copy the files and create an ISO disc, but it won’t be bootable. I had to rebuild my hard drive recently, and I really don’t want to install XP again. Thanks very much! Peace.

I don't have Ubuntu Linux or any other OS on my machine at present besides OS X 10.6.2. So just drag and drop the extracted ISO file into a DVD-R and burn slowly? I don't have Windows on my computer at all at the present. How do I know that this will overcome the 64-bit problem? There's no way to select the options like one can with IMGburn.
With Disk Utility, one can only select .img files to burn. How do I make a bootable .img that will boot into the 64-bit Win 7 installer? Is there a free equivalent of IMGburn that runs natively in Mac OS X? Thanks again. Peace.
