Copy a clomun to another with diferent data type

Question

I have a table and two rows have money (I wantinfo but the column was created as varchar2, so I created new columns as number type, to copy my data but I think Im missing something
-deb1 as new cloumn and total_debt as data to be copied
UPDATE master_tc
SET deb1
(select total_debt
FROM master_tc); Regards

Good! That's the CREATE TABLE statement. Don't forget to post INSERT statements to populate the table as it exists now (unless the whole point of the question is how to populate the table. However, you said that
you had a total_debt column that already contained a string, so I don't think this is the case.)
Whether the table has data in it before the DML or not, post what you want the table to look like after the DML is completed.
DATE is not a very good column namel; it's exactly the same as a built-in data type, and will cause errors and confusion. Use something like dt or transaction_date instead.
... Then when I run my script:
UPDATE master_tc
SET deb1
(select total_debt
FROM master_tc);And I get this error:

SQL Error: ORA-00927: missing equal sign
00927. 00000 -  "missing equal sign"
That's one of those error messages that acutally means what it says. The syntax requires an = sign in the SET clause.
Review the syntax of the UPDATE statement in the SQL Language manual. The basic format is
UPDATE  table_name
SET     column_name = val
--                  ^ note = sign here
;as Greg and I showed in our suggestions. Have you tried them?
