Copy admin account
I run into problems with some apps, e.g. Keychain Access and iCal. So I am thinking of creating a new admin account for myself. To make a new start from scratch, so to speak.
What is the easiest way to do so? I mean including all the data, docs, images a.s.o. from my old user account?

first, copy them to some location aoutside your current home directory that both users have access to. For example to the /Shared directory. then log out on your current user, log into the new one and copy them from shared to the new home directory.

Admin account + copy from another account
We have an imac, four users and an admin account.
For this example:
A is me
B is my wife
C is kid1
D is kid2
E is notadmin
I am going to upgrade to snow and found out today that B is the admin account. E should be. The password is the same for all 5 accounts, that's mainly why I never caught this problem. when I get a new application, I've always put it into E's application folder...
But the mac thinks B is the admin.
Short question:
I want to add a new admin account (F);
After doing so what files should i take from B (system, library, etc)?
I have all along been adding applications to E; should I move them to F?
What other files in E should I move (application support and stuff like that?
Should i create a new B for my wife and copy over the files from the old B?
If so, should I delete the old B?

Do you mean a folder called "Applications" inside User E's home folder?
The best place to install applications is in the /Applications folder, which is at the top level of your hard drive. All users can access them there. If you have created separate Applications folders for each user, each residing in the user's home folder, just log in to each user account and move the programs to the /Applications folder. -
My MacBook Pro (mid-2010) suddenly stopped working when I was overseas, but I managed to fix it when I returned back to the States after I reformatted and erased the disk, then installed Yosemite. I lost most of my files but didn't really care, though I noticed that some pictures from iPhoto had survived and were in the Trash folder.
I thought I could copy/paste them back into iPhoto, but it wouldn't let me since they were still in the trash. I started getting an error message for EACH PICTURE saying it couldn't be copied because it was in the trash, and when I realized that I'd have to click "ok" 644 times (once for each picture), I tried to restart, then shut down, and eventually forced a shut down by holding down the power button. This is where the problem started...
After trying to startup again, I was able to login to my admin account, and the desktop image would load, but I'd get the spinning rainbow wheel and the computer would remain frozen like that from then on. I tried to repair the disk (there was nothing wrong), and even re-installed the operating system again, but still the problem persists. BUT, if I login with my guest account, everything works fine.
I'm guessing it has something to do with it somehow being frozen on those error messages for those 600+ pictures, but I have no idea how to fix/unfreeze it. Any tips or suggestions?mozak wrote:

SATA3 is backwards compatible with SATA2. That is not likely to be your problem.
Based on what you have done, I suggest a reinstall of the OSX.

I recently set up multiple accounts on my imac, When I was trying to figure out how to share the documents I must have done something wrong. When logged into the Admin account, I open up any document and I get a message box that says, "The Document could not be opened. The file isn't in the correct format. The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format." What did I do and how do I fix it?
Without knowing what you did it is impossible to give advice on how to correct it.
If these were files you copied over from some other system then just Re-Copy them replacing the ones that are corrupted.
Other then that I suggest you Wipe the drive and start over with a clean reinstall of the OS and programs. Then if you want to share files to All Accounts place those files in a folder in the ROOT of the drive. -
Mail Unexpectedly Quits on admin account but not others
This is a Mail quit with a twist...
I have already done the following:
repaired permissions
deleted plist files
installed the updates for the OS and for mail.
checked for plugins and don't have any
deleted cache files
tried another copy of mail.app from my laptop
repaired permissions again
checked hardware
checked disc
installed the update again
There are no to-do's.
I removed any fonts with warnings.
Seems no matter what I do, mail will crash a few seconds after it is opened when in the main admin account on this iMac. Other mail programs work (like Thunderbird). Internet works fine too. When in another user account, I can open and view mail and it works fine.

It always has a crash log with a crashed thread that says the same basic things
I've got so much stuff in this one user account that I'd really like to avoid having to transfer everything to another user account unless there's an uncomplicated way of doing it. I've already started stuffing my pics and songs into my shared folder for dragging around later.
Any help to fix the problem in my admin account's instance of Mail would be greatly appreciated,

Message was edited by: Eric SNIt looks to me as though your Launch Services database may be corrupted and need to be reset, which you can do by downloading Onyx for your system and running the Maintenance > Reset section, making sure to check the box to reset the LaunchServices database. You should, of course, quit all running applications while you're doing this.
But I'm puzzled as to why you are running Mail in the Admin account; you should never be running anything in that account unless you're performing a system administration task. You risk security and hosing your entire system by being in there; everything else on your Mac depends on that account working normally. If you need to use Mail, you need to create a separate user account just for you.

Hello so i've been having this issue with my main admin account... for about a year now there have been items stuck in my trash folder and safari crashes after a bit. i've taken my computer to apple store and they cannot fix they told me to reinstall OS with disk but when i try to do that it times out... out of frustration i created a new admin account and what do you know i do not have the same issues with the trash... so i copied all the mail folders, preferences and address books over but the passwords didnt follow... so i was only able to get mail on the accounts i could remember the passwords to... so i was using the other account and kind of going back and forth to the old account but now i'm having even more issues with the second account... my macbook pro is all kinds of screwy ...
i need to consolidate the mail i have on both admin accounts... because i have to go back to using the main admin account and i want to transfer all the mail i've been receiving on the other account for the past 2 months to the old account.
can someone please help?Ok so i figured out what to do (through lots of research and headaches) just thought i'd share my solution... i needed to consolidate two admin applemail accounts with the same email accounts and i forgot all of my passwords...
# To back up Mail preferences (i only did this on my main admin account seeing as though the secondary had the same exact preferences). (i'd suggest also backing up addressbook info as well...)
1. Create a uniquely-named folder on your desktop (or other favorite location- like an external drive). For example, you might call it "Mail Prefs Backups May152005" (adding a date is a good idea).
2. Quit Mail if it's running.
3. In the Finder choose Home from the Go menu.
4. Open the Library folder.
5. Open the Preferences folder.
6. Copy the "com.apple.mail.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file. Don't remove the original file from its current location (this file contains your Mail accounts information).
7. Close the Preferences folder.
8. Open the Mail folder.
9. Copy the "MessageRules.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file (this file contains your Mail rules).
10. Copy the "SmartMailboxes.plist" file to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the file (you guessed it, this file contains Smart Mailboxes information).
11. Finally, copy the Signatures folder to the folder you made in step 1 by Option-dragging the folder. (Your custom signatures, if you use them, are stored here.)
#manually back up Mail messages (i first did a backup of the MAIN admin account on my external drive so that i made sure i didnt accidentally remove any files... then i manually went into each "inbox"/"outbox"/"drafts" of each account and added each email- emails here are only identified with a unique set of numbers and date/times in the info field- that was not in the MAIN admin account to the copy mail account located on my external drive -yes this was VERY tedious- also i had folders that i had to consolidate so i made sure i didnt miss those)
1. Quit Mail if it's open.
2. From the Finder's Go menu, choose Home.
3. Open the Library folder.
4. Copy the folder "Mail" to your backup location, such as a different volume or burnable disc. Important: Do not remove the Mail folder from ~/Library. If you're backing up to the same volume, hold the Option key as you drag the folder to make a copy instead of moving it (a "+" cursor appears).
once i got all this i took all the files i copied/consolidated on my external drive and replaced all the original files in the new Admin account i created (I have to create a new MAIN admin account because the original main admin account is corrupt the second one also has some of the same issues because i was rushing through copying all of the plist/library files over without inspecting each...)

Keychains
Keychains are located in your ~/Library/Keychains/ folder. To get to this file in the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu. Open the Library folder, then open the Keychains folder.
i copied that file and backed it up on my external... also i opened it up and found all the passwords i forgot
so this problem for me is solved...
PS the KeyChain is AWESOME! i use firefox and none of those passwords are saved to the keychain but there is an addon password extractor u can export usernames and passwords from firefox with this addon and ad them to your keychain... -
How to replace all prior admin account info and files
I know this is a common question but I'm bogging down reading the various threads and would appreciate a link or answer.
I replaced my Powerbook hard drive, clean installed (no archive) and updated Tiger, transfered my home folder and apps only via Carbon Copy Cloner from a back up drive. I noticed that I had typo'ed my ne Admin long and short name. I went to Sys Prefs/Accts and created a new account, logged into that one, gave it admin access, re-logged to the new acct and deleted the old one.
My P'Book still shows the old name on start up. How do rename and certain that any other existing system level or other files under the old acct are gone. I'm also getting keychain password box and the P'Book immediately wakes up when trying to Sleep from Apple menu or closing the lid.-checked energy saver settings and reset Power Manager... I'll look at those after I'm sure there's nothing lingering from the old admin account. No other problems noted.
I'd greatly appreciate a thread or explanation.
Thank you.Yes, the old account is gone in Sys Prefs/Accts. When I start up the machine, the old name still shows above the log in window, while the new account name is the only log in option.
I've also got a keychain mail password box popping up so I want to be sure that everything is gone from the old account before I resolve the keychain. Some threads here give me the impression there may be other files lingering from the original account set up from the boot disk, even though I deleted it from Sys Prefs/Accts. -
Import problems in new admin account
I have two accounts on my system, my main admin account ("Admin"), and a new user that I have just created ("Adam"). I am trying to duplicate my "Admin" setup in the "Adam" account and move my 24GB iTunes music folder and mailboxes across to it.
I moved across all the preferences from "Admin" to "Adam" and basically all my applications work fine, although I had to reinstall a few preference panes. The "Adam" account is configured with administrative access via the tick box in the accounts preferences.
If I archive my mailboxes under "Admin" and then copy to "Adam", the files show up as locked folders with the red sign on them and they cannot be imported. Likewise, if I drag the entire Mail folder out of preferences and across to "Adam" it is likewise locked up.
Similarly, I cannot move my iTunes music folder into "Adam" because iTunes reports that the librbary file is locked, hence it will not recognize the library from the "Admin" account.
How can I easily move my music and email into the "Adam" account? I thought that allowing admin rights under "Adam" would work, but obviously the "Adam" account does not have permission to access these files when they are simply copied across.Glad you fixed it. In the future, here is a better way to move files from Account A to Account B without running into permissions headaches:
1) Log in as A.
2) Move the files to /Users/A/Public (don't move any Apple-created folders, like Documents, Pictures, etc. Just move their contents.)
3) Log in as B.
4) Navigate with Finder to /Users/A/Public.
5) Drag the files to the Desktop. This will make new copies of them with correct permissions settings for B. File them away in the appropriate places in B's home folder.
6) Log back in as A. Delete the files from /Users/A/Public. -
Lightroom 3 asks for serial number launching in non-admin account
The following information was provided by Carey Burgess (Adobe Employee):
Does Lightroom 3 launch and work fine in an admin account, but when you launch the application in a standard (i.e. non-admin) account it asks for a serial number?
If so, then it is likely due to a file permissions issue either in the original (admin) account or with the standard account.
(Although you need administrator access to install Lightroom, and you do need proper access permissions to your photos, you should be able to run Lightroom without issue in a standard user account.)
Lightroom 3 stores registration data (the serial number) in a file called Lightroom 3.0 Registration, which is stored by default in one of these locations:
* Mac OS: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
* Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom
* Windows 7/Vista: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Lightroom
- Check for the registration file in the appropriate location for your system.
If the file does not exist in that location, then ensure you are logged in with the admin account (the one where Lightroom doesn't prompt for a serial number) and check the user-specific location instead:
* Mac OS: /Users/YOUR USER NAME/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
* Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom
* Windows 7/Vista: C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom
If the file exists in the user-specific location instead, then I would suggest that you ensure that you have quit Lightroom, and then move the registration file from the user location to the default system-wide location. Lightroom should now no longer prompt for serial number when you open it from a non-admin account.
If the registration file did (or now does) exist in the default system-wide location, but you are still being prompted to enter a serial number when opening Lightroom in a standard user account, then that account does not have sufficient access permission to the registration file.
To resolve this aspect, there are two possible solutions (the first being the recommended solution):
1. Change the access permissions on the Lightroom folder that contains the registration file to grant "Read" access for the standard user account. (You can do this for each account individually, or you can use a broader group like Everyone.)

A couple of weeks ago I reinstalled Lion on my mac to find that I cannot register Lightroom. I have the 3.0 upgrade serial, the 2.0 upgrade serial, but the 1.0 was on the box..
I followed the instructions above to find the files in crashplan form before the fomat that hold the registration details. I have tried placing them in the location described, but it doesn't seem to work.
The serials (or something) are in the file, but given in the string that is difficult to decipher - and doesn't work in the registration screen, wrong size and a mix of letters and numbers rather than just numbers as my 3.0 serial is.
Any suggestions for what I could do? Could I send the strings in to Adobe to be deciphered? Perhaps move files around a bit more?

Bricked Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro-1370 due to broken microsoft ecosystem / unrecoverable admin account
Hi. So now I am here. HELLO EVERYONE! All you friendly and curious troubleshooters. I am frustrated and lost. I will not give you the 14 step Microsoft issue. But I guarantee this will be one of the more bizarre or interesting problems you have read in a bit. so tl;dr - my yoga 3 is bricked because the user account switched the administrator to an unrecoverable & disused / non-used outlook.com email account b/c of the MS App store. Their tech has not helped, no recovery has worked at all. I just want to factory reset the hardware at this point, but the software "glitch" needs me to log in to my admin account to factory reset, which is something I can't do. Way too long of info story: a) on my lenovo tablet, I had my personal login to sign into my admin profile. I did not use a MS Outlook account at all. In Feb, I signed up w/ a "dummy" outlook.com account for the app store, but never DL anything, and didn't think to realize this account locked me into an ecosystem... I just thought it was a temp email to register, and didn't keep any details. The 1st time it removed my local user account profile from admin, and replaced it with the outlook.com account. I immediately switched it back, that time. b) 2 weeks ago, I wanted to DL The Economist app. We hadn't used any apps, & again it made me sign in to Microsoft. I signed into my account and DL the app. I believe it signed in with a remembered password, as I don't remember it. It could be one of 15. c) At this point, microsoft's account removed my personal local lenovo user account, and replaced it with the microsoft outlook.com sign in d) Now, when I try to log in to my tablet, it says "You can't sign into your PC right now. Go to account.live.com to fix the problem, or try the last password you used on this PC". No previous passwords work. This is probably because I tried to sign in a bunch of times under my personal local user account, before realizing it had switched the admin to the outlook.com account. e) I go to account.live.com, and it redirects to login.live.com. When I try to sign in with my outlook.com account, it says "You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect email address or password." f) At this point, a captcha comes up, and no matter how many times I solve it correctly, it won't let me sign in. I did get to a point where I see a different type of screen that says my account is locked. g) When I try any form of account recovery, and attempt to have an email or password sent to my secondary recovery email, those emails never arrive in my inbox. h) when I attempt to have a code sent to my phone, I never receive the code. i) the microsoft support number has a phone tree that leads me to a place that tells me to go online to get support. j) When I try to contact customer support, it leads me back to the login in page. So I made *another* MS account for support, and have spent 2 weeks getting copy pasta support about "try password reset", "try text code reset", "try account recovery". I never get the password reset to my recovery email, I never get the text, and the account recovery doesn't work because I never used the email, and don't have enough information like email subject lines, or folders, for them to know the account is mine.... even though it was a throwaway email to use for the ecosystem, and not to use for anything else. I am still 10 tech support messages in with their support team, and they still haven't realized the problem: I DO NOT CARE ABOUT RECOVERING MY OUTLOOK EMAIL, but I do if that's the only way to gain access to my hardware's admin account. I have tried everything, and it doesn't work. I do not care anymore. I just want to factory reset the **bleep** thing, but it needs my password for the admin account to do it. Ain't that the darndest thing? I mean.. think about it! Microsoft's broken ecosystem of account recovery means their software has intrinisically bricked my Yoga 3 and made it unusable. I can still use a sub-account, but it acts all wonky because it wants me to download apps using an outlook account and when I try to sign a new one in, it leads to broken links, etc. If Microsoft's ecosystem doesn't allow for account recovery in any way, how do I take control of my hardware again? I feel frustrated and alone. This was a HUGE purchase for us, and I never thought a software glitch or problem with the ecosystem would brick hardware in this manner. NB: I know I have to take some accountability for not remembering the password, or realizing the ecosystem being a bit rigid and fierce, especially when trying to find back end understanding or support in recovery.... I had no idea, and that's on me. I also know it's not "bricked" IE unusable, per se... but not being able to log in to the admin account, nor make changes, updates, or get into the app store... it's pretty brickish. How can you clone a admin account?
I was trying to change the home folder name on my account but ended up moving my home folder and converting my account into a new admin account. All the default settings on the account were gone and it looked like a new mac.
After locating my user folder with my entire mac moved into it I copied it to a external HD.
I now need to create 1 new admin account and set my home folder to the old folder so all my original settings are restored to how I had them customized before.
How can this be done??

Software always installs to Domain Admin account on connected PC-cant install to Domain User account
I have completed the following steps:
Set up Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials successfully
Successfully connected a Windows 8.1 Pro PC to the network by running the Essentials Connector software
The PC has the following users: Original local account created when I installed Windows 8, Domain Admin account created when I ran the Essentials Connector account, Domain User created after PC was connected to the network.
Everything seems to be working fine. I have installed MS Office 365 Pro, Skype, various other applications while logged in as the Domain User. Every one of these installs triggered a UAC prompt, which was expected, and after entering the Domain Admin
credentials the install proceeded successfully. After install, the software was available to the Domain User, shortcuts appeared in the Start Menu or Desktop, appropriate directories were created in the Documents folder.
All except for 3 applications - upon being prompted for permission to install, I enter the Domain Admin credentials, installation proceeds, but the software is installed to the Domain Admin account-not the Domain User account. Shortcuts appear on the Domain
Admin desktop-Not the Domain User account, etc. I've tried:
Downloading a new copy of the software to the Domain User desktop & running it from there
Right-click file, Install as Admin
click file, Install as a different user
Right clicking file, Properties>Compatibility & changing compatibility settings
Right clicking file, Properties>Compatibility>Run as Administrator
None of these options have changed the result, the software is still installed to the Domian Admin account as opposed to the Domain User account. Any idea why these 3 software wont install correctly but everything else has? Any suggestions as to how to install

Many programs may provide options: "install for everyone" or "just for current user", when you install them.
Please check if there are such options during the installation process.
If those three programs are all third-party applications. I suggest you should contact with the corresponding
support and confirm this.
If those three programs are Microsoft applications, would you please let me know specific information of those
three applications? Such as their names and so on. Meanwhile, when complete the installation, please check the software path was added in administrator environment variables or system environment variables.

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received those media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like. -
I just installed a fresh copy of Leopard Server. After the install, I was faced with the "Administrator" account that I created during installation, and a "Local Administrator" account that I did not create.

my initial reaction is that canyon-sized leaps of logic don't help anyone.
I think where many people get into difficulties (be it Mac OS X Server or just as much, MS Small Business Server), is they start out with unrealistic expectations,
perhaps don't read all the documentation, and/or when they do, gloss over server & network fundamentals that are absolutely vital to know and understand, prior to setting up any server(s).
I do think Apple did themselves and everyone a dis-service in the extent to which 10.5 Server was marketed as (suggesting that) not requiring a certain level of skill, knowledge and expertise - in working with servers and networks.
In fact, setting up and maintaining a server requires a significant amount of knowledge and know-how, a sizable skill set, and a willingness to both learn and work (maintain, troubleshoot, investigate) methodically.
To answer your question:
The "Administrator" account is an OpenDirectory admin account, for working with OpenDirectory
based accounts, whereas the "local" admin is just that - for working in the (server-) local directory.
Many of Apple's services in 10.5 (wiki, for example) require user (and group) accounts be "network" (ie: OD) accounts, in order for things to work correctly.
For updating the server, you can use the localadmin account.
For "create users, groups, sharepoints, etc.?" , depending on what you have in mind, you probably want to use the "Administrator" account.
The "directory" based accounts in this case will beOpen Directory accounts,
and OD is given an excellent introductory explanation here (note however that it's pre-10.5 but apart from the bit about NetInfo is still completely relevent):

Lightroom - Export error from Admin account
Lion 10.7.4 MacPro - I cannot export from Lightroom 4 in my main Admin account. Lightroom gives me an error message - When I create a new admin account I can export from LR4. It also works on my two laptops. Spent much time with Adobe and it was determined that it was an Apple issue. Can anyone help?

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
