Copy disk image..

hi,
im about to update my old powerbook from tiger to leopard... im really scared to lose data and some compatibility with all my soft like pro tools and all its plug ins... so someone advised me to make a copy of disc image thrue the disk utility device...
someone can explain me foot by foot how to process and give his advice about all that ?....
thanx a lot

how do you do that clone copy ?
Cloning makes an exact copy of the volume on an external HDD that is bootable. However, if your computer is PowerPC you need a firewire external drive to boot from the clone. You can clone with Disk Utility, but most users prefer to use either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. I will post both methods below.
Creating a Clone using Carbon Copy Cloner
• Connect external HDD to computer
• Download and launch Carbon Copy Cloner
• Select a Source. This will normally be the Disk which you want to backup
• If you wish to backup/clone only your Users Folder or other folder click on the checkbox. If you want to copy the entire HDD, check Macintosh HD.
• Select a Target. This can be your external HDD, or, if you so decide, you can backup/clone to a Disk Image on the external HDD.
• Cloning Options: for the first time you should backup everything. For updating your backup you should select Incremental backup of selected items.
• If you want your clone to be an exact copy of the original you should check the box to Delete items not on the original.
• Click Clone
Clone Old HDD to new HDD using SuperDuper
• Connect external HDD to the computer and boot from internal HDD.
• Download and launch SuperDuper
• In the Copy field select your internal HDD
• To is your external HDD
• Using *backup all files*
• Click Options button
• Check *Repair Disk Permissions on Source*
• During copy Erase Destination HDD then copy from Source
• On successful completion Quit SuperDuper
To test clone
• Shut down computer and with external still connected
• Option boot from external HDD to check clone.

    Hi Folks,
I wanted to enable FileVault on my computer but it keeps failing when I try to initiate it. I get a message saying that it can't copy disk image. What can I do about that?
I won't be back online until Friday so if you have any more questions please be patient!
    Thanks,

    Hi Lizzy Scott;
No programming, Linux or other funky stuff required.
If you go to Lock Your Data with Disk Image, you will find the directions on how to do it.

  • Copy Disk Image to New Disk Image

Hi. I have a disk image that is in sparsebundle form and has a total size of 9.61gb. When I mount the image, it results in a volume with 8.53gb used and 15.97gb capacity. Let's say that I wanted to move this entire volume to a new partition that is only 10gb in size. I should technically be able to do this since the files only take up 9.61gb, right? I can't seem to move it to a new volume, or disk image with a capacity less than 15.97gb. Is there a way that I can work around this? Basically I just want to create a new volume with total capacity approx 10gb and copy the files over. I tried using disk utility and restoring but I keep getting an error about not enough space. Any thoughts would be helpful, thanks!

See if you can reduce the size of the existing sparse bundle, per #A8 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
Then you should be able to just drag & drop the sparse bundle to the new volume.

  • Copied disk image checksum fail

Created a read-only encryted disk image of a batch of proprietary hardware pictures.
Opened and verified no issues with the original dmg file.
Copy to a portable firewire drive.
Throws up with a checksum error every time trying to open the copied dmg file, even before I unplug the firewire disk.
Checked it with diskutility and it even says that the underlying encrypted folder is fine, but will not allow it to pass through the checksum to mount.
??? Dunno what is going on here.

The problem appears to be USB related.
Was not paying attention. Normally the firewire drive in on a notebook using the firewire ports - I had it temporarily on the MDD using the USB port on the drive. [Quick trip to Radio Shack and $34 for a 6ft firewire cable which will reach around to the back -  for all future use.] Now the copied files work just fine using a firewire cable.
I have LOTS of issues with USB on this MDD, and always have; had to remove the USB ports from the monitor because they continually locked up the entire USB structure; the brightness control on the monitor has NEVER worked.
    Technology is never perfect.

  • Application copied from disk image not recognised as correct arch by Finder

    Hi,
occasionally, when I download a disk image ".dmg" that contains an application bundle ".app", I can run the application from the Finder by double-clicking on the icon of the application on the disk image, but when I copy the application to my harddisk, either with the Finder or with "cp -rP", and try to start the copy, the Finder gives me "You can't open the application xyz because it is not supported on this architecture".
However the size of the application bundle, as measured with "du(1)" did not change, and sure enough the copy works just fine when I directly launch the application binary from the shell... The latest example of this behaviour was with the supertuxkart-0.6.1a-full-osx.dmg that I just downloaded.
Anybody seen something similar and/or know what causes this strange behaviour?

I have had a similar problem simply making a copy of a .app file. I spoke with Apple support about it and they said this is the desired behaviour when the application is not a universal application.
You can check by opening the info window for the application and seeing if it says Universal next to Application in the Kind field.
If it says Universal, it should copy without problem, if not, then it won't. Apple support wasn't able to give me a clear reason as to why this is, though.

  • How do you create a disk image using Disk Copy?

    Hello,
Is there any way you can create a disk image using Disc Copy? Is there a better way to create a Disk Image?
I would like to burn two copies of a 4.2 gig folder on my mac. I usually insert a blank DVD-R and then the mac asks if I would like to prepare it at which point I click "yes". An icon of a DVD disk appears on the desktop and then I drag my files onto this icon. It takes a few moments to create the disc image and then I click "burn". However, after the disc is burned the disc image disappears and I have to start all over again if I want to make another copy.
How can I save this disc image? If I could save the disc image, it would enable me to burn a second DVD right after the first without having to create the disk image all over again. This would save a lot if time.
    I am using OS 10.1.5
    Thank you for any suggestions

Thanks Niel for the info about creating a Disk Image with the Disk Copy utility in OS 10.1.5
That worked however when I insert a blank DVD-R, the disk image still has to be copied to the DVD-R buffer and then it can be burned. And so this doesn't really save any steps - the "copying into the buffer" step still has to occur whether or not you have created a disk image of your files. So creating a disk image doesn't really shorten the process of burning multiple copies of a DVD.
I will try to describe the steps more clearly:
Two of the three steps for creating a DVD (steps 2 and 3) are very time-consuming:
    1. put blank DVD into the drive (a DVD disk icon quickly appears)
    2. drag files onto this icon (this step takes a long time as the files are copied into the buffer)
    3. choose "burn" (the actual burning also takes a long time)
I was hoping that when I create two or more DVDs of the same files, I could first create a Disk image so that when I create the second DVD, step 2 could be skipped. That does not seem to be the case - the disk image still has to be re-loaded. And so I think I will not bother with the Disk image idea - it doesn't seem to be necessary or helpful when burning DVDs to backup data.
    Thanks for your suggestion.

  • Cannot copy applications from Disk Images to Applications Folder

I downloaded a couple of applications that I use to my hard drive today and then tried to copy those applications from the disk images to the Applications Folder. In both cases, the copy process got partially completed and stopped with an error message that the item already existed in the destination. This happened even though I had made sure to delete the old application and empty the trash. It also happened with a completely new application that I had never had on my hard drive before.
I then tried to copy the application to the desktop and it got partway done and then stopped with a message "The operation cannot be completed because an item with the name "Path Finder4" already exists."
I then tried to copy it to an empty folder...same error.
I am running as Administrator and have had no problems with Leopard for the past week until this.
I suspected permissions and tried to boot from the Leopard Install DVD and repair permissions but repair permissions was greyed out. I ran "Verify Disk" and it said I needed to run "Repair Disk". I tried that but it failed while trying to reconstruct the B-Tree.
I am now going to try Disk Warrior (booting from a bootable TIger backup) but I wondered if anyone was having similar problems?

UPDATE: Disk Warrior found a lot of errors, but said it was able to fix all of them, so I told it to rebuild the directory. It did so successfully and then I rebooted to see if it did in fact work.
The bootup was considerable faster (no doubt a result of the cleaner directory?) and I was then able to copy the application that I downloaded from the Disk Image to the Applications folder.
So I am running again...seems o.k...but for obvious reasons I am nervous!

  • Your disk copy of image was changed since last opened or saved (Mac OS)

I am  occasionally getting a message that "the disk copy of image  was changed since the file was last opened or saved". The OS is 10.6.6 and I am using CS5. It happens on no specific file. All of my files are pretty big. The current one that this is happening on is a psb that is 3.26 G unflattened. I have from  ignorance always ignored the message and saved anyway. I have never detected any damage or discernible changes to the files after ignoring the warning, but after searching Adobe forum and reading a thread about this happening in CS4, I guess I should be more cautious and do a save as and change the file name. I started this thread because no one has reported the issue happening in CS5.
The files were all given to me by ftp as either psd, tiff or camera raw files.  I work on duplicates of the originals in no other program but photoshop and opened and closed the files a few times before getting the message about the disk copy being changed. All of my files are saved to an internal harddrive and  backed up on a time capsule device. I am on a network, but am the sole user of the network. The files are  worked on and saved to an internal hard drive on the same computer. They are never opened on another computer which is usually turned off. I am running no virus protection software except what ever is native to the OS. The only other applications I am running when getting this message are safari, mail and sometimes bridge.
Why am I getting this message and what is causing changes (that I can't detect) to the disk copy?

    Really, damn
I wonder what it can be. I'm 100% sure its nothing running in the background changing the files in my workflow.
I checked everything and its funny because it is the same on 3 Mac Pro here ???
So it must be a bug some where in Adobe's files/apps/etc
Some combination of files, setup or what ever making the error come up.
I never had it before i upgraded to 10.6.x Before all Mac Pro was running 10.5.8 with PS CS4 and it worked alright.
Then i upgraded all our Mac's to the latest to get the 64bit feature and PS CS5 and even the newer CS5.5
And then it started and its also with the newest PS from CS5.5
First i thought i found the problem because i saw a post at Extensis forum about the Suitcase FM core and Fontsense
extension for Photoshop and i deleted the extension from photoshop plugin folder and i was happy at first but then again.
It came back after a wile.. Sucks. Not that.
I wonder if its really because PS thinks the image was changed. I know it suppose to be that way but in our situation it is
something else. A bug ofcause and i have been trying to figure this out the last 3 days and even yesterday i used 7 hours
in a row to find a solution but i never found it.
I really hope we can find a way other than reinstalling Mac OS X and Photoshop. I do think if we formatted the drive and
started all over it would help but i don't want to do that because it will take me for ever to set up from scratch, yarggg
What do you think ? Do you have any idea whats so ever what could course this ? any ideas

  • How do I copy a disk image using disk utility?

I have a copy of my idvd as a disk image, but when I open disk utility to burn it to a disk, I can't drag the destination disk to the destination box. What am I doing wrong?

How to copy previously-burned DVD-R video discs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2059
To create an image file, launch Disk Utility and select File: New: Disk Image From Folder. In the window that appears, navigate to the desired folder and then click on Image. Give the image file a name, and click on Save when prompted. That’s it.

  • How do I copy a disk image off of a drobo onto a new computer?

I have a disk image of a bootable drive saved on my Drobo. I would like to copy this image onto a computer. What is going to be the best way to do this? Will the Snow Leopard installer allow you to simply copy a disk image onto the boot drive? Should I boot the new computer up in target mode and copy the image over somehow? Any suggestions would be welcome

Then, I surmise that the image is corrupted. If it was made from one of those MBs, then it's easier and faster to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to just put a copy of the good one onto the other one and eliminate mucking with Disk Utility.

  • Disk image system copy causes problems

    Hi
Working with a client who chose to copy a PRD SAP ECC 6.0 system to a new box (as DEV) via a disk image copy. They renamed enough of the new SAP system to get it running but they still have problems.
The command CHGR3SHLOC fails when the PRD box tries to create the mount to DEV. Also the source system name show up in the name of the default & instance profiles even when the old profiles are deleted and regenerated.
I was wondering if anyone had a list of things to be changed when using a disk image to create a new SAP system.
Personally I always do a normal install followed by a DB copy to create a DEV system from a PRD system.
    Thanks
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
I'm sorry, but I never used DSPR3SYS or similar ... you udefinetely do not need to redo the copy, but you need to fix the root cause. As I do not know your issue, I cannot help you ...
I would change the data area in r3sid400, the profiles and the /usr/sap/trans/config/SID ... (except the rest of my document)
In crazy cases delete of the IFS stuff in /usr/sap & /sapmnt should help as well and then use crtr3sys and crtr3inst ...
For more details, I need to check online ...

  • Disk Copy Utility to Write HFS disk images to USB floppy & ZIP drives?

Is there a disk copy utility that allows one to copy an HFS disk image directly to an attached USB drive, bypassing the Finder? I have both 100MB ZIP & 1.44MB floppy images which need to be restored to original media.

If you don't have a Mac that can read your OS X Installer DVD, then you have no way of putting it onto the USB drive.
Although there is PC software that will enable you to read from and write to Mac formatted drives on a PC, you cannot boot a PC from a Mac installer disc. The only possible solution would be the use of third-party PC software that can read an OS X Installer DVD restore its content to an OS X formatted USB drive. Unfortunately I have no idea if there is such an animal.
Maybe you should just order an external optical drive or a replacement drive for the defective one. You might check out macsales.com. Surely UPS delivers to the "middle of nowhere."

  • Disk Utility not copying all files when making disk image

My OS is 10.6.5 and everything is up to date.
I have a dvd that was burned for me of a play my child was in. It was probably burned on a PC using out of date software for all I know. But it plays in a DVD player and also in DVD player on my Macbook.
I want to be able to share clips of it online with friends, and that has all been just fine importing from the disk image I created of the DVD using Disk Utility, using IMovie 09 to edit it.
HOWEVER when I got to the end of act one, chapter 7 in the DVD is only about 3 minutes in length. The disk image I created using Disk Utility does NOT include any chapter 7 (which happens to be the ending of Act 1) and so I cannot import it into I Movie in order to add it to my mp4.
When I explore the DVD itself with my macbook, it only lists twelve files (various BUP's and IFO's and VOB's etc) -- here they are sorted by file name
    VTS022.VOB
    VTS021.VOB
    VTS020.IFO
    VTS020.BUP
    VTS013.VOB
    VTS012.VOB
    VTS011.VOB
    VTS010.IFO
    VTS010.BUP
    VIDEO_TS.VOB
    VIDEO_TS.IFO
    VIDEO_TS.BUP
Now, when my husband took the disc and created a .dvdmedia file in it and I explore that, there are 14 files. All of the same 12 files plus two more. (The DVD itself has 13 chapters but the main menu doesn't allow you to select them.)
the other two files in the .dvdmedia package are
    VTS020.VOB
    VTS010.VOB
But I can't do anything with that .dvdmedia file except watch it.
So I'm trying to figure out how to at least grab even just that last 3 minutes from Act 1 either from the original disc or from the dvdmedia file, using Imovie. So far having no luck. Disk Utility leaves it out and it's my only bridge from a burned DVD to Imovie. I've tried creating a DVD master and also an ISO using DVDRipper and that does the same thing. Also if I open the original burned DVD with Finder it only shows me the 12 files not the 14 that show up when using DVD Ripper to create a dvdmedia file.

About 3 years old...pretty dated now I guess.  Am thinking I may just need to have it upgraded by a Mac tech.
For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

  • Disk Utility create encrypted disk image hangs

I'm trying really, really hard to backup my data but apple is not making it easy for me.
I need my files encrypted for an offline backup. Time machine only allows home folder to be encrypted, and due to my home folder being on my SSD drive I cannot fit my files all in there, not by a long shot.
Using Disk Utility, I choose "new disk image from folder", and select "read only", 256-bit encryption. Some of the folders worked. However some will just hang for hours on "Creating Image, copying...". I can see at the destination the dmg file has stopped incrementing larger. It has reached the full size of the folder approximately. Does apple fail at some file types? I already ran disk repair several times to no avail. I don't know what else to try, it just doesn't want to work. All I want is an encrypted backup, that any OSX install can retrieve without any special software involved. Sometimes I'll get a very unhelpful error message "Operation not supported". Whatever that is supposed to mean. Google was no help so hoping for some insights here.

Create an encrypted sparse disk image instead of from folder, mount it, and then drag & drop your files into ii.

  • Unable to burn AUDIO to DVD or Disk image, video is fine

As many other posts have stated; I am unable to burn the Audio portion of an iDVD nor does "save as disk image" transfer the audio of my iDVD. Transferred an iMovie, (an iPhoto set of photos with iTunes audio imported into iMovie) to iDVD. Audio plays on iMovie, audio plays on iDVD preview. Tried removing recommended ~com.apple.iXXX.plist, no help. Tried different encoding methods: i.e. Best/High/Professional. Tried saving to different sizes HD/Large/etc. Tried Share Media in iTunes, Media Browser, etc. Checked Main Audio, volume slider bar in iDVD. Tried importing audio into iDVD rather than transferring from iMovie. It doesn't seem to matter how I build the iDVD it works, until I go to Save As Disk Image or Burn DVD. Video works great (better in Large than HD) Audio doesn't transfer.
21 total minutes, 1.15GB of final iDVD using a default theme.

    Hi

Yes this is the problem - in iTunes there is a copy-protection that moves over
    Result
    • Plays well in iMovie
    • Plays well in iDVD preview
    • Silent on DVD
Only way around this is to in iTunes collect needed audio into a play-list
Burn this out as an Audio-CD and .aiff (NOT .mp3)
Use the audio on this CD in Your iMovie project.
