Copy drag within a layer

To copy an object you can use Alt + the move tool and drag.  This creates a new layer. I want to copy objects by dragging within a layer but can't remember the shortcut!  Anyone know?
I know if you hit Alt + Shift + Arrow an object will copy within a layer....but you can't manipulate its position as fast as you can if you were using the move tool.

Select first, then Control-Alt and drag.

  • How do I copy text from one layer to  another?

I have Googled this but not a single answer seems to work.
    I am using Photoshop CS4 on OS X 10.6.7.
OK, so  I  have a layer that  has some text in it.  I would like to  be able to  simply copy that  text  from one layer  to  another, but this seems to  be impossible as the Edit Paste menu item is grayed out after I have copied it in to the clipboard.  I can paste it into  the SAME layer, but not into another layer.
This is how I am trying to  do  this.
In the layer  with the text, click on the "T" icon to  the left.
Click on the text, in the layer that I  want to  copy.
I select the text (either  by  clicking and dragging or pressing Command-A).
    Next I press Command-C.
Then I  click on the layer In the Layer Panel) where I want to  paste the text.
Pressing Command-V is impossible because the Edit-Paste menu option is grayed out!!!!
    WHY??????
Perhaps more importantly, HOW do I copy text  from one layer to  another?

First thing you can simply right click on the Text Layer and choose Duplicate Layer.  But that will create a new Text Lay
er identical to the one you have.
To answer your question in your case....  Create the Text Layer.   Make a New Layer.  Or have the layer you want to paste into visible.
Highlight the text layer in the Layer Palette and Ctrl+Click (Win) Cmd+Click(Mac) so that you see marching ants walking around your text.
    Edit>Copy.
Then highlight your Layer you want to paste into and hit Edit>Paste or Cmd+V / Ctrl+V.

  • Copy PDF within Portfolio

Feature Request: Copy PDF within Portfolio
Within an Acrobat Portfolio, you cannot select a PDF, drag the selection with the CTRL, and have Acrobat make a copy of the PDF. The "copy" and "paste" are grey when a PDF is selected. Often I want to make a copy of a PDF and make numerous modifications to the copy. Currently, I have to export the original PDF, and then import it again with a different name to make a copy in the Portfolio. I hope you can add this feature. Thanks

With Adobe Reader you can copy data, but to create a new PDF with the copied data you need Acrobat or http://createpdf.acrobat.com/

  • Issue with Dragging a 3D Layer

There seem to at least three ways to get an external 3D model into a document:
    1. Open the model file itself.
    2. New Layer from 3D File.
    3. Drag a 3D layer from another document.
The third way has a problem associated with it that doesn't seem to be documented:  Unlike the first two, when you do this one, the results depend on where you release the mouse cursor.  The worst part is that unless you happened to drop it at the center of the document, you can get some very non-intuitive behavior:
When you zoom the camera in the Camera Tool (N), the center of the image does not stay fixed as it does with a real camera.  This leads to real problems in positioning the camera to get the view you want.
The orthogonal camera views (Left, Top, etc.) normally adjust to show the image centered in the view.  They do not in this case.  The Top view, for example, shows the red and green axes as crossing somewhere besides the center and perhaps even not inside the view.  The model is not centered.
For a given camera elevation and azimuth, you should be able to calculate where to place the camera and how to rotate it so that it points at, say, the origin.  If you do this correctly, it will work in the first two cases, but not the third.
It can be a gotcha.  The documentation Combine 3D objects (Photoshop Extended) has explict directions for the steps you should take but does not mention this effect.  The effect is especially apparent and non-intuitive when the camera is near or in the model, and as it would turn out, that was the situation in my first real project with Photoshop 3D.  It took me a long time (weeks) to figure out what was happening, and I still have some remaining lack of understanding.
In case you don't want to read further, let me say that you can avoid this problem by using Shift-drag or Layer | Duplicate Layer.  Both of these center the 3D object in the layer, and the camera works as you would expect a 3D camera to work.  (The documentation should say this rather than what it does say.)
It doesn't seem to be a bug, and the implementation is probably logical, but it needs to be documented.  I am not sure of the best way to help this happen.  Perhaps someone can suggest the most effective way to go about it.
This is what I have learned the hard way.
It works just the same as dropping an image on a layer.  You can use the Move Tool (V) to move the image around and can use Free Transform (Ctrl-T or Command-T) to move, resize, or distort it.  In addition, Free Transform will show you the numeric values of where the image is located, how it is sized, etc.  This is true of other Photoshop objects in a layer as well, not just images.
It is, in fact, apparently using the same mechanism as it does for all objects.  The problem is that this is a 2D concept and doesn't play well with the 3D object.  For a 3D object by itself, what you see is determined by the camera and model positions.
These, in fact, stay with the 3D object in the layer as you move it around.  However, the camera is aimed relative to the 3D object whereas what you see is a combination of this and the location of the 3D object in the 2D layer of the document.  For example if your 3D object is moved to the lower right of the document, then all of the Top, Left, Front, etc. views will show it in the lower right.  This is probably not what you would expect, at first anyway.
The numeric values of the location of  an object in a layer are given in pixels.  The locations of things in the model inside the 3D object are in terms of its dimensions (inches, meters, etc.) even though the units are not necessarily known).
I do not yet know what algorithm Photoshop uses to determine the end result of what you see.  They don't even document their 3D coordinate system, much less this.  I have been able to determine fairly well what the coordinate system must be, but I haven't figured out how it gets mixed in with the location in the 2D layer.
I also have not yet figured out how to get the numeric values for where the object is located in the layer.  The free transform values always indicate it is the same size as the layer and centered.  It will always render to fill the document window, in any event.  If someone knows how to get the numeric values, I would appreciate the information.  It is necessary if you want to do accurate placement as for an engineering or architectural model.
An upside is that this can be a powerful feature if you learn to control it.  I am reasonably sure you can get views of your model that are not possible using the 3D camera and object tools alone.  I think this because I spent a lot of time trying to position an object in a tutorial so it looked like the example given.  I was not able to do this with the camera controls alone and was only successful after moving the layer, once I learned the above.
Thanks in advance for any further insight into this issue.

I ran into this to...it has to do with the way the player
handles the 3D transform. The workaround I used was to take a
snapshot of the object you are rotating using BitmapData, make your
actual object invisible, rotate the temp bitmap, and then at the
end of the rotation remove the temp object and make your actual
    object visible again.

  • Can't click drag within widgets in Dashboard

Not sure what caused it, but suddenly I can't click-drag WITHIN a dashboard widget. For example, if I click and hold the pulldown menu in the Dictionary to change to thesaurus, the pull-down menu won't activate. It only activates if I click and release to bring it up. And I can't select text within a text field. If I click and drag over a word to select it, the whole widget will move.

  • 10.4.6 finder (copy / drag and drop) bug

    Any one encounter this?
Brief summary: When copying files from an iMac to external firewire drive the finder (copy) grinds to a halt and eats up all the free disk space on the iMac hard drive
Detailed summary: iMac 20" G5 2.1GHz 1GB Ram 10.4.6 and an external LaCie 500GB firewire drive.
In an effort to move to Aperture I have begun cleaning up my iMac's hard drive which entails moving several gigabytes of jpegs, gif's, raw files, and Quark Xpress files, etc., to external hard drives.
All of these files are sorted into folders and sub-folders based on clients name. This is just a basic 'copy' from iMac to external hard drive. The iMac has about 50 GB of free hard drive space and the external hard drive has about 400 Gb free. Copying (drag and drop) any folder that has more than say a total of 7500 files inside causes the copying to start then grind to a halt. The odd part is that the free disk space on the source machine (iMac) gradually disappears during this process.
Size of the move doesn't seem to matter as it is only when the file count exceeds approx. 7500 that things go wrong. One move entailed 9000 or so files and was only 250 MB but managed to eat up all 50 GB of free space in minutes. The first clue that something is wrong is seeing the warning message pop up stating you start-up disk is full.
The only way to get the hard drive space back is to reboot the machine then all of the free disk space reappears. I have tried to relaunch the finder but that does not reclaim the missing free disk space. Also of note the memory usage never creeps up, as if this was some kind of memory leak. It stays pretty much constant through the whole process which is about 240MB.
Not sure if this matters but spotlight is currently told to ignore image files which is the bulk of what is (trying) to be moved. Also this behavior didn't occur under 10.4.5 or prior point releases.
    Any ideas or thoughts?
    Thanks,
    -brian
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   LaCie external 500GB firewire drive

What is the format used on the external HD?
You did format it for Mac use (HFS+), right?
Yes, the external drive was reformatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before being brought into use. I have several LaCie drives in different sizes from 250 Gb and up for back ups and never had an issue until now...
Seems to be finder related as if i open the top level folder and grab smaller groups of folders it works fine, just takes forever. So at least that is the work around. I was kind of hoping to just grab a bunch of folders start the copy and go do other things and come back and it would be done...
    Thanks for the reply,

  • How to cycle thru blend modes within the Layer Style dialog??

Hopefully, we all know you can use the Shift key and + or - to cycle through blend modes in the layers panel, as well as in various tools (like the Gradient tool or the Brush tool). A great way to quickly preview your blending options.
But what about within the Layer Style dialog? This seems to the only situation where this shortcut does not work. Is there another shortcut or workaround that can be used here?
    I'm using Photoshop CS2 (on a Mac).
    Thanks,
    Doug D.

    That's a good point.
I guess that Multiply (for Shadow) and Screen (for Glow) are really the "go to" blends for these effects, and including any other options beyond those is all just gravy.
I'm just so addicted to using the Shift +/- shortcut and really like previewing blending changes that way... (But it would create a conflict within Bevel and Emboss, as you suggest.)

  • Is the number of histogram pixels the same for each channel within each layer?

    Dear Photoshop Scripting Forum:
I have written a script to isolate the number histogram pixels for each channel within each layer of a file.
However, I have found some unexpected results: That, the number of pixels is the same for each channel within each layer.
    For example,
Layer 1 has 18,979 pixels by itself, and so does each channel within it (Red, Green, and Blue)
Layer 1, Channel Red, has 18,979 pixels
Layer 1, Channel Green, has 18,979 pixels
Layer 1, Channel Blue, has 18,979 pixels.
This does not seem right to me.
Does someone else have the same experience, or knowledge of something else?
I am wondering if there is a bug in my script.
If need be, I will post the script, but it's kind of long for a forum.
    Thank you.

The following is for RGB 8bit images.
The red historgram is an array of red values of the pixels that range from 0 to 255. Each element in the array has the number of pixels that have that red value. So for example if you had a layer that is pure red 255,0,0 all the pixels would be in the 255 element and there would be no pixels in the other elements. The red historgam still has the same number of pixels as the layer. They are just all in one histogram element( they all have the same value ).
But even if you know that all the pixels in a layer are all in the last element(255) of the red histogram you still don't know the color of the pixels. A white pixel has a red value of 255. So does a yellow, magenta, etc pixel. If you only know the red value of a pixel the pixel could be one of over 65000 colors. Most of which would not be considerd 'red'
It is the three channels together that detemine a pixel's color. Unless the layer is one color you can not tell the color of the pixels from looking at the histogram.
Unless you use the color range selection then get the histogram of the selection. Even then you need to decide what color value make up 'red'

  • Count layers within precomposed layer

    Hello dear scripters.
I'm trying to count the layers within a precomposed layer.
has somebody a solution for my problem?
    Thnx a lot.

    This is my code:
var curComp = app.project.activeItem; // this is my acive comp
    var theSelection = curComp.selectedLayers; // i selected some comps
var compLayer = theSelection[0]; // compLayer is also a comp
// and here is my problem
// this doesn't return the number of layers within my compLayer
    var theNumber = parseInt(compLayer.numLayers);
alert(theNumber); // returns undefined but i need an integer

    Great. That works.
Thnx again for your help Dan.
    :F
    Here is the working code.
It takes a selection of comps in the active comp.
    Enables timeremapping.
Adds a null as controller with some sliders.
And adds an expression to the timeremapping
    this just works with CompItems.
It is usefull if the layers in the comps are sequenced with one frame length

I have moved my media (Music, Movies, Pictures) to the Users/Shared folder.  As I'm doing some cleanup in these folders, I am trying to move several folders/files at once, all within the same Shared folder.  I have confirmed that the permissions settings under "Get Info" are set to "Read/Write" and I have verified and repaired permissions with Disk Utility.  However, every move I try to do is a copy.  I have tried the Command-Drag method, but I'm still left with the green plus sign indicating a copy.
On smaller files/folders, this wouldn't matter so much as I would copy, then just delete the original.  But I'm dealing with many, many gigs of music and my HD doesn't have space for holding copies, even if the originals will be deleted.
Very frustrating to have to spend so much time to figure out what would seem to be a very basic file management feature.

  • Copying to a new layer

In Freehand you can hi-lite an object and then go to the layers pallett and double click on a layer to copy the object to that layer. Basically transfering
the object from one layer to another.
Is there a way in Illustrator CS4 to do the same thing? Freehand does in in a very simple way. I'm hoping that Illustrator has a simular feature.
    Thanks,
    HJMann42

When you select the object, a small rectangle to the right of the layer shwos in the palette. Just drag it to the desired layer. Or drag the object's entry in the layer palette to the desired layer (the object doesn't even need to be selected for that).

  • Photoshop CS5 crashes when dragging a new layer

I was searching the forum for similar problems, but non of the threads had a solution (except uninstalling and installing again PS CS5 or even worse - formatting my PC).
I must say that this problem is quite new. PS was working flawlessly for a few months. It crashes when I paste a new layer and drag it.
    These are my specs:
    * HP Pavilion 9750ej
    * Nvidia GeForce 8400M GS with the latest driver 266.58 (I uninstalled the previous one, and had a clean install of the new driver)
    * 2GB RAM
    * 11.7GB of FREE SPACE on 320GB HDD (I know it's not much, but it shouldn't cause PS to crash, especially when I'm working with low-res pics)
I don't know how to create a crash-log, but I would attach if you could tell me how, and if it's needed.
    Thanks!

You haven't said what version of Windows you're running.
You don't need to do anything special to create a crash log; all versions of Windows keep this information already in logs.  These logs typically keep information a long time, possibly all the way back to your installation of Windows.
What you want to do is to get into the Windows Event Viewer.  On a modern system you can hit Start then type event log into the search box, then when View event logs comes up, click it.
A Photoshop crash will be in the Windows Logs - Application section as an Application Error.
You'll want to copy the textual description, which should include the Faulting module, and paste it here.  Usually the Faulting module tells us what part of your system is failing.
