Copy files failed: An unknown error occurred (-50), copy files failed: An unknown error occurred (-50)

Can't consolidate my library.  Any clue as to the fix?

Do you have a line number? The script prossibly makes an unjustified assumption that the Album Artist field always exists though I thought I'd covered that one.
Looking at the script there are two locations where the value of .AlbumArtist is read - the second one shouldn't ever cause an error. The first one has never done so for me, but I suppose it is possible if the "first" track in your library isn't a standard audio track...
If the error line is 143 would you mind adding the following line of code before the current line:
If I=1 Then MsgBox .Name    ' (letter i = numeral 1)
Can you find the object with that name in the library, and if so what kind of object is it?

  • Recent backups fail: "An error occurred while copying files to the volume."

I recently moved to a new place and set up Time Capsule as a bridge. Backups were working fine for the first couple days but then, out of the blue, I got a message that said the password I entered for Time Capsule was incorrect. I entered the correct password and hit OK. Time Machine was able to connect but now backups fail with this error: "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
Time Machine indicates it is "preparing backup" for a few minutes, then sits at "zero of __MB completed" for a long while, finally starts backing up and gets to the end but then fails. Console indicates "unexpected reply from backup server; ignored."
None of these attempts have fixes my problem:
--I have deleted my TC passwords in Keychain Access.
--I have tried downloading the latest Airport Utility and re-entering the TC disk's password in both Airport Utility and in Time Machine preferences.
--I have restarted my computer and unplugged & plugged back in TC.
My Internet connection works fine; TC's light is solid green. I can enter Time Machine to restore backups without a problem. The backups just fail every time now. Any ideas?

The problem really isn't the speed of the backup; it's done in 5-10 minutes, but each time it finishes, TM reports it has failed. I don't believe plugging it in overnight or letting TM try over and over will fix the problem. I've tried to manually start backups a number of times, and have let TM try to start and complete them on its own but they consistently fail.
It would be an awful shame if I had to delete my old backup--I bought the Time Capsule for the specific purpose of having backups that go back months and I don't want to lose what I've already backed up.

  • When importing files from desktop to laptop using home sharing, files fail to copy "An unexpected error occured (-50)"

So I'm trying to copy my library from my desktop computer to my laptop. I'm using the import feature when browsing the other library through Home Sharing. Some files wil copy, anywhere from 6-150 songs then it will fail. I have 6000 songs to copy, so I really don't want to babysit my way through this. I'm having to use my wireless network (no external drive available), but it is pretty sturdy. It hasn't been giving me any grief to stream the music, just to copy Is there any fix for this?

The following comes from the LaCie web site but is applicable to any other external drives whether home brew or commercial.
Getting error -50 when copying data in OS X.
Some drives ship out formatted FAT32 so they will be ready to use on either a Mac or a PC. If you are getting error -50 when copying to a drive formatted for PC, it is because of the following:
Certain characters that can be used in a Mac OS X filename are not allowed in MS-DOS filenames. This can prevent the file from being copied, and can occur when a filename contains non-printing ASCII characters, or any of these characters: ? / \ < > " | > *.
Either copy the data off of the drive and use Apple's Disk Utility to erase the drive in Mac OS Extended format, or change the filenames of the documents that cannot be copied.

  • Time machine: An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.

Time machine backups are failing. I've followed the instructions I found on the Time Machine troubleshooting page (http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html) but have gotten to where I don't know what to do next.
    Sequence of events:
The main error message is always:
An error occurred while copying files. The problem could be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
Yesterday, I opened Disk Utility and verified the disk. Got this error:
Error: This disk needs to be repaired using the Recovery HD. Restart your computer, holding down the Command key and the R key until you see the Apple logo. When the OS X Utilities window appears, choose Disk Utility.
I ran Disk Utility and repaired the hard drive. Then I manually started the backup before going to bed, figuring it was going to take a long time to run. When I got up this morning, the backup had failed with the same "could be temporary" error. I checked the log, which says:

You have repaired your boot drive (which is good) but have you repaired your time machine drive?  I don't own a Time Capsule so I don't know if disk utility can operate on it.  If it can, you should repair it as well.  You may need to erase it and start a new backup.  That happens to time machine volumes from time to time and is why people who are serious about their data never rely on a single source of backup.

I tried going back to the gmail settings to ensure the trash settings were set to SHOW and SHOW IN IMAP, and I unchecked "Store deleted messages on the server" for the gmail account in the mail.app, as I was also getting messages about not being able to move messages to trash(null), and I thought that might be the issue, but while that fixed the mail issue, it did not fix the Time Machine issue.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

The TC in and of itself is running ok.. otherwise you would not have internet.. so the issue is the OS in the computer.. however the combo is worse than the sum of the parts.. ie Somehow TC is less reliable with Yosemite than it would otherwise be..
here is the normal fix list.. but it is far from foolproof.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the laptop itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.

  • The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk

    Heeeelp!!!
MBP Lion, Back up using time machine to an external HD 1T Seagate connected by USB, plenty of space left. Everything worked well, until it didn't!
I can use Time machine to go back in time, and I can see/access/play movies from the library on the external HD. It all works except the backup. I have rebooted everything, I have verify'ed and 'repair disk teh HD several times, I have done the same to my Mactintosh HD + repair permissions. I was earlier getting a different error message and used time machine buddy to ID a file that was behaving, actually an old application that I have listed in options in time machine preferences to exclude. Note that there is also the name of the back up destination on this list but it is greyed out.
    SMART status is 'not supported'.
Error now reads unable to complete back up, An error occured while creating the back up folder.
    The time machine buddy log is copied below;
    Starting standard backup
    Backing up to: /Volumes/JAMIE BKUP/Backups.backupdb
    Error: (22) setxattr for key:com.apple.backupd.HostUUID path:/Volumes/JAMIE BKUP/Backups.backupdb/Jamie’s MacBook Pro 15" size:37
    Backup failed with error: 2
Does this mean that I list as an exception the back up volume? Is it trying to back up the back up?
    Appreciate any advice thanks. Jamie

It's still a drive malfunction. The drive hasn't necessarily failed in the usual sense. Those drives just don't seem to work well with Time Machine. I don't know why, and I don't know why it worked until now.

  • IPod won't sync - "Itunes could not copy (name of song) to the ipod (name of ipod) Because an unknown error occurred (-53)"

I recently bought a used iPod Classic (my previous one was stolen). I still had my iTunes library on my computer so I was just going to hook it up and sync my library over, replacing what was on there from the previous user. When I first hooked it up to my computer (Windows 7 64-bit) there was a message saying the drivers were not installed properly. I un-plugged it, and plugged it back in to the same result. I tried 1 more time and didn't get the error message. I then opened iTunes and clicked on the iPod. I checked for updates, then clicked "Restore this iPod". Next, I set it up to sync music, and the sync began. It seemed to work for a while, the "Syncing iPod" message was displayed at the top, and it said it was copying songs over. It did this for about 10 minutes before I finally got the following message:
"Itunes could not copy (name of song) to the ipod (name of ipod) Because an unknown error occurred (-53)"
After that happens, everything seems to freeze up. iTunes says it's still syncing, but nothing ever seems to happen. If I click the eject button, nothing happens either. I eventually have to just disconnect the iPod. The iPod seems frozen for a while, then it seems to reboot itself (the gray apple window displays), then the interface displays and I can get to the songs on there. But, only a very small portion of my library makes it to the iPod. I've tried several times now and it always seems to be the same songs that DO make it onto the iPod. However, it's a different song listed in the error message each time, so it doesn't seem to be just 1 song causing the problem. Also, once I hook the iPod back to the computer, Windows displays a message prompting me to scan the drive and fix errors. I did it once and it said it found some errors and fixed them.
    I saw this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3924425
and some people were suggesting removing everything from your library then re-adding it, in case the paths were messed up. I tried that and still got the same results. I also updated iTunes to the latest version, and I've tried different USB ports and 2 different USB cables.
I also found instructions for a batch file you can run that, I believe, updates the iTuens DLLs, I did that as well but it did not help: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539
What else can I try to fix this?

  • Time Machine will not complete a system backup and terminates with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume.  This follows a problem when Time machne terminated when the volume was almost full.

On 11/1/2011, Time Machine (TM) terminated with an error message I did not record.  I noted that the drive was full and decided to do a separate complete bootable  system backup using Carbon Copy Clone (CCC), before clearing the TM volume and trying to start it over clean.  Part way through the full system backup CCC put up a message that there was a Physical Problem  "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16".  That was about the time that TM malfunctioned, so I assumed they were related.  After starting CCC over a couple of times, and getting the same error message, I let it go through to completion of the backup, which took three or four hours.  I then ran tests using Disk Utility and verified that there was nothing physically wrong with both the internal hard drive and the TM volume.  I also erased and reformatted the TM volume.  However, every time I started Time Machine, it would record a few GB and terminate with "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".  I restarted the computer with no change in results.  Note that prior to starting the CCC backup, I "Repaired Permissions", "zapped the PRAM" and "re-set the SMC", hoping to have a clean bootable system on the backup.  I ran Techtool and no problems were found.
I'm running this on an Intel iMac under 10.5.8 and recording to a 500GB My Passport drive.  My hard drive is only about half full at 246 GB.  My assessment is that something happened at 16-28-16 on 11/1/2001 to screwup the Backup Directory in the file at "Library/Application Support/Techtool Protection/McIntosh HD/Directory Backup 2011-11-01-16-28-16". My question is, how do I fix it?
I had just completed writing everything above here, explaining the problems I had been encountering for the past 24 hours.  I had the Time Machine window standing open on the desktop where I could see it, having recentlycleared it after the last termination.  As I was proofing what I had written, I looked at the window and noted that the clock had started a new run for a full back up, since all prior efforts had failed and the TM volume was empty.  As I watched and waited for it to fail again, as it had been doing at about 13 GB, it kept going and going until it just finished a complete backup, about 4.5 hours later, with my having done nothing.  Now my question would have to be - what could possiibly have happened to make it perform this way?   It will be interesting to see if it continue to operate normally, or if the problem will return, in a later backup run.

You should not keep those files for long, and probably shouldn't back them up (if you need them at all -- since you do regular backups, I'm doubtful just how worthwhile that feature is).
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume".
One of Apple's maddeningly incomplete messages. Most likely, there's a problem with a file (quite possibly the one CCC didn't like).  See #C3 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting for details and instructions on finding and fixing it.
If you continue running the Directory Protection app, be sure to exclude your Time Machine drive from it (as it will just take up lots of room, and won't help repair your backups if there's a problem);  and exclude the folders it creates from being backed-up by Time Machine (as they'll create large backups, and you probably can't use the backed-up folders anyway), per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

This could very well have to do with ACLs.
I bumped into the same problem:
    5/8/11 10:43:22 PM          com.apple.backupd[7126]          Error: (-41) SrcErr:NO Copying /Users/SA/Public/Drop Box/HandBrake.app/Contents/Frameworks/Sparkle.framework/Versions/A/ Resources/de.lproj/SUAutomaticUpdateAlert.nib/classes.nib to /Volumes/Local Backup/Backups.backupdb/Server/2011-05-08-221524.inProgress/88ACE716-0660-44C8- A128-CF01046FC2F8/Macintosh HD/Users/SA/Public/Drop Box/HandBrake.app/Contents/Frameworks/Sparkle.framework/Versions/A/ Resources/de.lproj/SUAutomaticUpdateAlert.nib
Using DD or CCC is no option for me, I don't want downtime and I want incremental backups. So I started to investigate.
I repartitioned my external Time Machine drive, did the backup again. It didn't work. Then I blocked the culprit file mentioned in the logs from being backed up with TM. That helped, only to find that a bit later it found another file with issues.
So i looked at the files an found they had ACLs on them that somehow prevented them from being copied.
    SOLUTION:
remove the ACL from the file.
If you want to remove all ACLs in a directory, use Terminal and navigate to that directory. Then issue this command:
    sudo echo | sudo chmod -R -E ./*
If you would like to remove ACLs from a single file or package (e.g. an application), issue this:
    sudo echo | sudo chmod -R -E <nameoffile>
You might have to this several times since there might be multiple files affected. Unlike previous solutions, this one does not require you to delete the file.
I got the command to remove ACLs from http://osxadmin.blogspot.com/2008/01/chmod-acl-removal.html

  • Backup failed - error occurred while copying..  Mac Pro after restore

    Hi gang.
After the most recent EFI Mac Pro firmware update, along with a software update... I could not reboot - got the prohibitary sign. After some time on the phone with Applecare senior tech, i did an erase install from disk with a restore from TM. Seemed to fix my issue, and could reboot as per usual, but I then began getting TM failures with...
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
It also said to try again later, restart, and use Disk Utility to repair the TM volume. I did all of these (no probs in Disk Utils) and got the same issue... I decided to give up my month of backups, and finally erased the disk, and time machine got through 2/3 of the 1.37tb of data on the 2tb disk before I got the same message. Tried again and got more data between more failure messages. It's now down to what it thinks is 3.07gb of data as it begins to copy, and copies to 4.36 gb of data, then says it is cleaning up, then fails with the same message... again and again. The drives being backed up and the TM hard drive are all internal disks. Any hints on how to get this working properly?
    Thanks
    Dave

I migrated to my Mac Pro from a G5 several months ago... my boot drive is a 2x100gb solid state drive array. Everything was working flawlessly until I installed an EFI firmware update, and some software updates a few days ago, and my machine would not reboot. I had to erase and install from install disks, and restore from a TM backup from that morning. The catch is that the disk I installed to had some recovered files (data rescue) from trying to save my sister's Powerbook G4 hard drive... and it's possible that invisible files were picked up when I Carbon Copy Cloned that install disk back to my Raid Array boot drive. ???
I tried excluding the usr/bin folder, and got the same error... with other usr folders showing in console error -34... so I excluded the usr folder, and so far I am 160gb through a 1.2tb backup with no issues. I'll let you know.
I also did a disk util repair permissions on my boot raid, and got a host of issue including some unrepairable things.... I will reboot on a different disk and do a repair disk... but here's what it said-
    Repairing permissions for “SSDraid”

  • HT3275 Time Machine error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume. Tried restarting, remounting external WD drive. Still cannot backup.

Time Machine quit backing up files. Bought a new WD external drive. Worked for awhile, then quit backing up. Tried restarting computer, remounting drive. Message: Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred when copying files. Suggestions?

Thanks so very much for your help!! I'm boggled by it and now just about ready to dump the whole idea of Time Machine and backup using a cloning program. Maybe TM is only guaranteed to work well with Time Capsule these days?
Today there again was no backup. I did as you suggested, looked into Console. It showed many lines of "(Error) DiskStore: No block in wakeup" and also repeatedly "(Warning) DiskStore: Ignored bogus fetch...".
So I created a marker and attempted to initiate a backup, keeping Console open and refreshed. Here's what I got:

During this 9-minute timeframe Finder also was inoperative - according to Activity Monitor: "Not Responding".
I'm thinking it's the standalone Buffalo backup drive not waking up, and so everything comes to a screeching halt. Do you also think I should abandon TM and just do manual backups every day using a clone program?

After months of working OK Time Machine is reporting "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk". Anyone have any idea what's gone wrong?

I followed #C3 and loaded Time Machine Buddy, which was defnitely helpful, then deleted the file that the backup failed at, but after 3 more attempts I stopped deleting or excluding files as this wasn't improving the situation.
The recommendation is to exclude those files from being backed-up, not to delete them!
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required:
Yes, that's a bit misleading.  It just means that will be done, if it's required, which it isn't on your backups.
I have no idea if anything actually was changed however just when I had given up and walked away, TM has started working after a week of failing.
It probably did find and fix something.  Just for reference, Disk Utiltiy usually shows the progress and repair messages in the center part of the window, but often doesn't when repairing a sparse bundle on a network.  You can see the messages at any time by clicking the Log icon in the toolbar, or select Window > Show Log from the menubar.
    Anyway, glad it's sorted out!

Itunes could not copy (name of song) To the ipod (name of ipod) Because an unknown error occurred (-50)

I had this problem with a new album I downloaded this week from Amazon. It looks like they changed their cloud player download functionality within the last few weeks.
I previously tried the steps listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539
I had also tried Windows Updates and a few other suggestions I found on this topic and nothing had worked.
In iTunes, when I right-click on the track to "Get Info," I noticed it lists WHERE at the bottom of the Summary tab to show where the file is located. It said the file was located in \\?\C:\mp3\... Amazon automatically downloads my mp3's to this directory and imports them to iTunes. I assumed there was something wrong with the mapping, due to the \\?\.
If you notice your files are not mapped to a valid location:
Highlight the affected tracks and press the <Delete> key on your keyboard.
Select the Remove option when prompted to remove the files from your Library. Take care to Keep Files if prompted so you don't completely remove them from your computer.
Locate the files on your computer and drag them to import back into iTunes. If you check the location mapping in Get Info, the directory should now be valid.
I think the USB workaround above might resolve this issue, but this probably helps to explain that the files locations weren't referenced in iTunes correctly in the first place.

  • Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the...

Add me to the list of those with TIme Machine backup failures.
I am repeatedly getting the following error message:
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
    I do have work-around.
    1. Open Time Machine Preferences... (from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar)
    2. Change Disk...
    3. Re-select the disk you are already using and select "Use for Backup"
    4. Back Up Now (from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar)
The error eventually comes back, but following the above procedure keeps it at bay for a few days.
I have only had these errors since 10.5.3.

    Mle,
Take a look at the following...
*_“Unable to Complete Backup. An Error Occurred While Copying Files to the Backup Volume.” (Console: “Error: (-43) copying”, “Copy stage failed with error:11”)_*
There are several reasons why this error message can appear. Consider each topic individually. If one does not resolve the issue, move on to the next one. The following topics have resolved this issue for others.
*If A Backup Is Interrupted* #
“If an interruption occurs, Time Machine will wait for a period of time to see if the Time Capsule becomes available again. After this time expires you will see a alert message stating "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." In Time Machine preferences, the "Latest Backup:" field will state "Failed".” [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1176]
You will need to reestablish communication with the Time Machine backup disk.
    *Anti-Virus Software* #
Have you been running anti-virus software? xClav, Norton, Sophos, Macaffe etc... According to many posters in the forums this software can play havoc with Time Machines attempt to function properly.
*Firewire Devise Interferes with Time Machine Backups* #
If you are backing up to an external hard disk by means of firewire, do you happen to have another firewire device attached as well? An iSight camera or video recorder maybe? Sometimes additional firewire devises can interfere with the signal/power to the backup drive. Unplug it and attempt a backing up again.
*Corrupt File / Incorrect Permissions* #
One poster observed: “I searched my system logs and found a file that caused my connection to the TC to fail. I erased that file (after checking what it was - a temporary file connected to my Epson scanner) and tried again to back up for the first time. This time it worked, and in under 10 hours (I had been expecting about 20-24 hours, based on the data transfer speed).”
Initially this might be resolved without deleting the offending file. Simply use Disk Utility to “Repair Disk Permissions”. Or failing that, booting from the Mac OS X Installation DVD and running “Repair Disk” on the Mac’s internal hard disk. Now try backing up
Otherwise, you may need to track down the specific file causing Time Machine to choke.
Before attempting another backup, go into Applications --> Utilities --> and launch Console.
Under “LOG FILES” on the left select "system.log".
In the search field in the upper right, type in backupd. This is the process Time Machine uses to perform backups. By searching just for this process we'll isolate only Time Machine activities.
With the Console open, attempt another backup and note the time it starts and the time it stops. Often, the activities reported will identify the very file or event that caused the attempt to choke. (You can copy and paste the events for this backup attempt from the log into a post here and we may be able to tell you exactly what is happening.)
Once you determine which file or event it is, you can decide whether to move, delete, or modify certain things and then attempt another backup. For Instance, if the logs report something like this:
    +Error: (-43) copying /Users/Home/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver/Actions.plist to+
    +/Volumes/Backup HD/Backups.backupdb/My Mac Pro//Users/Home/Library/Application+
    Support/Quicksilver
Then it’s telling you Time Machine is choking on the file labeled Actions.plist and it’s having trouble copying to the backup disk.
On your computer, Navigate to that file ( Actions.plist ) and move it to the Trash, but DON’T empty it yet. Now try backing up again. If it succeeds, you can launch Time Machine and go back 24-48 hours and restore a copy of Actions.plist and replace it. Then empty trash.
    *Partition Scheme/Formatting Issue*
This KB article explains one reason you may be seeing that error message [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550]. It's a partition scheme issue. Time Machine is incompatible with disks partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR). Unfortunately, this describes nearly every hard drive you can buy because MBR is a Windows partition scheme. You will likely need to repartition the drive and start again. (Naturally, this DOES NOT apply to Apples’ Time Capsule.)
One article on Time Machine made this observation: “Virtually everybody will have to open Disk Utility and repartition the disk as APM or GUID. It doesn't really matter which one because the Time Machine disk will not be bootable anyway. APM allows a disk to boot a PowerPC, GUID allows the disk to boot an Intel processor but both are easily digestible by Time Machine on either kind of processor.” (http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html)
Once the external hard disk is repartitioned, select it again in Time Machine preferences and use it for your backups.
Let us know if any of the suggestions above resolved your issue.
    Cheers!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.
