"Copy Format" Command
Hi All - New InDesign User, CS4 on Win XP.
In MS Word, I use the Format Painter tool - this copies the format of one piece of text to another. There doesn't seem to be a similar functionality in InDesign. I guess it would be called 'Copy Format' or something similar. Is there such a functonality available in this package anywhere? (If not I might put it into the WishList forum.)
You might also want to try using styles. Styles can be defined from highlighted formatted text and applied to other text using a keyboard shortcut created as part of the style definition. That would be faster if you are going to re-use formatting more than once, and it has the advantage that you can re-define the style, and all the text you've styles will update instantly.

Why did Solaris 10 X86 change the output of the format command?
Solaris 8,9, & 10 for Sparc all display disk manufacturer information on the format command output:
0. c1t0d0 <SUN36G cyl 24620 ... >
1. c1t1d0 <SEAGATE-ST3360704FSUN36G-0826 cyl 24620 ... >
But for X86 this information is not displayed:
0. c1t0d0 <DEFAULT cyl 17846 ... >
1. c1t1d0 <DEFAULT cyl 17846 ... >
We need to read this programatically to distinguish certain physical drives. What happened to this information? Is this a bug?Solaris 8,9, & 10 for Sparc all display disk
manufacturer information on the format command
output:
0. c1t0d0 <SUN36G cyl 24620 ... >
1. c1t1d0 <SEAGATE-ST3360704FSUN36G-0826 cyl 24620
... > I believe this information is in the disk label. I think on first label some of that information can be queried, but it doesn't always reflect the actual disk.
But for X86 this information is not displayed:
0. c1t0d0 <DEFAULT cyl 17846 ... >
1. c1t1d0 <DEFAULT cyl 17846 ... >'format' on x86 is only looking at one fdisk-style slice, not the physical disk.
We need to read this programatically to distinguish
certain physical drives. What happened to this
information? Is this a bug?More information does appear in some situations, but I'm not sure where it's querying the information. Again, the label is not a good indicator of what the physical disk is, because that data can be copied.
You might try 'iostat -En' and see if that has sufficient information.

Copying formatting from conditional formatting without the rules
I tend to use a lot of conditional formatting in my spreadsheets. Unfortunately, this leads to two problems:
1) I need more rules than are allowed (this seems to be related to the height of my screen... probably because the dialog box doesn't have a scrollbar)
2) This really, really slows things down, especially when combined with cell references, and particularly when I'm trying to rearrange cells (as far as I can see Numbers has a tendency to freeze and/or blank out the table I'm working on)
The easiest way I can see out of my predicament would be to somehow remove the conditional formatting rules while keeping the actual formatting... like copy-and-pasting values instead of the actual cells (with intact formulae). Is this possible? And if possible, how would I go about doing it?
Thanks in advance!Up to 15 rules can be set for conditional formating of a cell.
1)
Considering that the usual purpose of conditional formatting is to flag 'unusual' values, and to make the 'condition' instantly visible and recognizable, that seems an over generous number. If a cell or group of cells on your table 'needs' more than 15 possible formats (the base format and 15 others based on rules), perhaps what's needed is a re-thinking of why that many are needed, and whether having that many formats adequately answers that 'why'.
If you really do need that many, you can set then, even if your display height is filled with fewer than that. Additional rules may be inserted after any existing rule, not just the last one. note, though, that the conditions are evaluated in the order the rules are listed, from top to bottom, and the format is set by the first rule encountered whose condition is met.
2)
Not surprising. Numbers recalculates the entire table each time a value in the table is changed. That calculation includes through each list of conditional formatting rules until a match is found (or the end of the list is reached), and includes setting the new format for each affected cell.
3)
Not that I'm aware of. The base format of the cell may be copied (option-command-C) and pasted elsewhere (option-command-V), and that pair of operations will include any conditional format rules that had been set for the original cell.
But conditional formatting is just that—a set of rules that applies a set of attributes to a cell when a specific condition is met. The applied format exists only when the condition is met, and can't be copied except by copying the rule—actually the whole set of rules for that cell—which puts you no further ahead.
3a) You could, of course, change the base format of the cell to match the colour and style applied by the conditional rule, then clear the conditional format rules for that cell or set of cells. That would 'remove the rules while keeping the (applied) formatting', and would leave the formulas intact. seems to me a game not worth the candle, though.

Copy Character command not accessable
Sometimes the Copy Character command is grayed out. Why is this? How do I turn it on?
I wish to ask you to what you write when you post a question, we are not sooth sayers.
In your first post you wrote:
_Copy Character_ command is grayed
There is no such feature
In you second post, you wrote:
It is the Format> _Copy Character Style_ command
Once gain, there is no such feature.
As far as I know, there is a "Copy" item in the Edit Menu and "Copy Style" item in the Format menu.
Given that, the Help is perfectly clear:
+Here are ways to copy and paste table styles:+
+To copy a cell’s style, _select the cell_ and choose Format > Copy Style.+
+To apply a copied cell style to other cells, select the cells and choose Format > Paste Style.+
+To paste a copied table using the spreadsheet’s default table style, choose Edit > Paste and Match Style.+
If the menu item is grayed, it's that there is no selected cell.
I must add that the requirement defined in the Help is extensively fair.
It accepts:
• a cell selected as a whole
• a cell whose all or part of the contents is selected
• a group of selected cells
• an entire selected table (with its 8 handles)
• a selected chart's component
• a selected text box
• a selected char in a text box
I'm not sure that I listed all items whose style may be copied.
As far as I know, the only way to have the "Copy Style" item grayed is to click in a sheet's background or in a window component.

Hi
On 10gr2, i use the rman command :
backup as copy database;
The format for datafiles is : o1_mf_"t"_"u"_.dbf
"t" seems to be the tablespace name.
But the tablespace name is always truncated (8 caracters), is there a way to have the full tablespace name ?
Maybe with use of the FORMAT command ?
Thanks for answer.

AlexandreYou seem to be using the default OMF format. If you want to specify your own format, %N can be used to specify the tablespace name.

HP SAN LUN not appearing in format command after applying 10-Recommended
We applied the 10-Recommended from March 18 and now the HP SAN LUNs are not appearing in the format command and when we cd to the mount points and run ls or ls -l no files are returned. We have verified that the LUNs are being presented by the HP SAN to the system as they were before applying the patch cluster. This is on an E-2900 with QLogic HBAs.

Cannot see disk in J4200 by "format" command - Solaris 10
Dear all,
I have a Sun SPARC T2000 server and a J4200 array connected to each other by SAS cable. The T2000 server was installer Solaris 10u8.
I installed CAM 6.5 software in my server and I successfully registered the J4200 array, after that, I can see all disks in this array.
However, when I issued the "format" command, I didn't see any disk in my array. I've got the same result after performing a reconfiguration boot.
I do not know how to do now to see the disks in this array.
Please help me in this case.
Thank all of you very much.
HuyNQ.Folks,
Interesting info as I tried with SPARC base runing Solaris 10 OS. The daemon is auto imported the unit without I have to issue the OS scan device "devfsadm".

Strange output from format command
Hi,
We have a Sun V480 running Solaris 8. We have installed 2 SG-XPCI2FC-QF2 fibercards. They are connected to an EVA3000 system. SFS newest version are also installed.
Have configured the cards with the cfgadm command. But when i run a format command i get this output. Normally it will show somthing like this c1t0d1. But here it shows c11t50001FE15005F54Dd1

Specify disk (enter its number):
Can anyone explain this? I was possible to format the disk. But are this OK?
Thanks,Rather than having disk target numbers, format now see's the disks WWN or World Wide Number. If you look at your output, disk 0 and disk 1 have the standard c1t0d0 and c1t1d0 identifiers, but the targets on controller 11 and 12 show the WWN for the LUNs/disks on the EVA3000. This is to help with multipathing etc. Yes it is on to slice the LUNs/disks.

Using the copy music command does not copy all the music
When I used the copy folder command in Itunes, it only copied either the even or odd numbered tracks from each album....
It does not copy all the tracks from each album!
any help would be appreciated.
thanks
NormHiya!
It depends on what kind of digital copy you have. This article goes ino details regarding the two types, and depending on the type you have, you may or may not need the DVD to redeem the code.

Hi ,
This regarding the observation I am seeing on two systems. In a system the format command shows as below
c3t2d0 <ATA-WDC WD2500YS-18S-6C07 cyl 30392 alt 2 hd 255 sec 63>
/pci@0,0/pci8086,2779@1/pci8086,32c@0/pci1028,1f09@8/sd@2,0
In another system the same command shows as below
c5t5000CCA01B6AB285d0 <HITACHI-HUS723020ALS640-A222-1.82TB>
/pci@0,0/pci8086,3c06@2,2/pci15d9,691@0/iport@ff/disk@w5000cca01b6ab285,0
/dev/chassis/LSI-SAS2X36.50030480008b403f/Slot_22/disk
In fist server it shows, available HDD as c3t2d0 but in second server it shows as c5t5000CCA01B6AB285d0.
May I know the reason?Solaris uses the WWN when the disk uses one of these technologies : SAS or Fibre Channel

Why do I get 8004 error, when I use copy past command to transfer pictures from one USB drive to another ?
There is no problem if the second drive is empty.mumbles27 wrote:
one is MS-DOS
would that be in FAT32 or NTFS ?
mac OS extended (case sensitive)
i'm not 100 % sure but i have a fancy such a combination may not play well together.
nothing bigger than 2GB for one file
i was asking because FAT3 has a limitation in that it will not allow you to copy files larger than 4 GB.

I've upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Leopard in the past week, and I've noticed that the shortcut for Paste Without Formatting (Command+Option+V) doesn't work.
I've also installed Evernote, and I've experimented by trying to assign Command+Option+V to "Paste to Evernote"
I get the error message that Command+Option+V is
already used by the menu item "Paste Without Formatting"
I've checked inside the System Preferences> Keyboard Shortcuts but I haven't found that shortcut assigned.
I'm assuming it's a system-wide assignment. Problem is that it's not working,.. How can I reactivate this?I've upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Leopard in the past week, and I've noticed that the shortcut for Paste Without Formatting (Command+Option+V) doesn't work.
