Copy from external drive using upgrade assistant

I use super dupper to back up my internal drive to an external (thank goodness) as I have had to do several erase and reinstall lately. I thought that the upgrade assistant would then read my external like it was in target mode and copy over applications and documents but it never seems to recognize the drive. Whats the best way, short of reinstalling all of my apps from the original cds, to copy stuff back from my external drive?

Well that's the thing. I can't put my external drive into target mode and my fresh ly installed system on my machine does not see the external drive as a "bootable system" when I run the upgrade assistant (which starts after a fresh install). I have been able to clone the backup back to the internal drive but I always worry that is a system file gets corrupted and then cloned to my external drive, when I clone it back, I end up with another problem.
What I was trying to achieve - and maybe I can't, is to do a fresh install and have the assistant read my backup and copy my applications, documents and user files like when you buy a new Mac and transfer everything over from your old Mac.

  • Copying from external drives repeatedly fails

    Hello!
I have repeatedly had the same problem with my computer and external drives. I have 2 hard drives (150 gig Western Digital in an external USB 2.0 enclosure, and a 160 gig Maxtor in an external Firewire and USB 2.0 enclosure) from which I often cannot copy. I've never had problems writing to the drives, but sometimes copying from them freezes.
I am a professional photographer and at any given time I'm working with far too many photos to fit on my laptop, yet I often need a particular project on my laptop so I can edit on the road. So I'm frequently moving projects to and from these drives.
This problem is not only with photos, however. When I recently reformatted my hard drive (too many old programs installed and it was faster to just start over from scratch to clean up the drive), I first made a backup onto each of these external drives. But when I went to copy my iTunes library back onto the laptop the copying would freeze. I'd relaunch Finder and start it again and it would freeze on the exact same file. I did all the disk utility first aid operations on my laptop drive and the external drives and it still happened.
If I connect the drive to my XP computer and transfer the files over my LAN then there's no problem. Makes me think the files are fine, as is the drive's integrity. Oh, and no problem copying these exact same files from one drive to the other, or from an external drive to the internal drive with the XP computer.
When this problem is happening it doesn't matter which drive I use or by which interface, it always freezes on the exact same files. But if I open that file from the external drive in the appropriate application it reads it just fine. It's only when I'm copying the file. And it doesn't matter if I copy 10 gigs at once or one file at a time, the same files freeze up. If this was just one file every 6 months I could probably deal with it, maybe even just delete it and move on (as I've done with MP3s, since I own all the CDs and can re-rip the song). But when in a set of 10 gigs even if I delete one photo it freezes up again another couple hundred megabytes later.
I'm baffled. I don't know what to do. The fact that it happens with multiple drives and multiple interfaces makes me think that it isn't a problem with the external enclosures or those drives. The only things in common are the exact files I'm transferring and the PowerBook.
I'm really frustrated because I've found a situation where my XP box performs better than my Mac, and I'm a little shaken up about it.
    Any ideas?

    Yes, it's from a camera.
Again, the file is not corrupt. It can be read by my Windows XP computer, opened in Photoshop, and all the data is present. And if I remove the file that isn't copying and start over it freezes on another one later. And then another. And another.
I was forced to edit this wedding on my Windows box (with an older version of Photoshop - much slower than using CS2 on my Mac) because I have been unable to copy them to my PowerBook. This is incredibly frustrating. I've run all the disk utilities on my Mac and on the external drive. Nothing has improved the situation.

  • Re-Creating Entire System on New Mac From External Drive Using Time Machine

    Hi all -
Sorry if this question has been posted, I've look extensively and haven't seen it in this exact form, and I'm paranoid about this stuff. I also can't get a straight answer from Apple store employees.
I travel extensively with my MacBook, and when I'm home, I use Time Machine to back up all data from my MacBook onto an OWC external hard drive.
My question is, if my MacBook is ever lost, stolen, or damaged, and its internal hard drive is no longer accessible, and I have to buy a new MacBook, can I use Time Machine to access the backup data on my external drive and transfer it to my new MacBook's internal drive, thus re-creating my entire system on my new MacBook, including all settings, preferences, files, absolutely everything exactly as it was on my old MacBook?
This is by far the most likely need I'll ever have for this backup data, so if Time Machine doesn't help me to re-create my system exactly as it was on a new laptop, it's not of much use, and I'll switch backup software.
Related question - I read somewhere that Time Machine keeps making backups on your external hard drive until it runs out of space. Does that mean it literally uses up every bit of space on the external drive? Because overstuffing my old external drive is what killed it, and cost me a huge chunk of change and several weeks to get the recoverable data off the drive. Or does Time Machine know enough to stop backing up when there is only "X" amount of space left on the drive, and if so, at what amount of remaining free space does it stop?
    Thanks for your help!

If you need to restore everything to a new Mac, you simply have your TM drive connected when you start up the new Mac and during the Welcome routine that runs when you start up a new Mac for the first time you will be presented with the option of migrating your user info, settings, files, applications, etc., from a Time Machine backup. You just click "Yes" and all your backed-up info will be transferred to your new Mac.
Time Machine continuous "cleans up" backups so you do not need to worry about TM pushing a drive to its capacity limits, or even close to that.

  • Cant copy from External Drive get error Code 50

I have a Mac Pro and suddenly it won't copy files from any external drive, or write them either. The drives mount and show up in fiinder, and they start copying, but after about 30 seconds they error out with "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 50).
It has done this on two different Mac Pros and 3 different external drives.  I don't remember this haqppening before. I have Paragon NTFS running on both Macs and they have worked flawlessly for maqny months but now they won't complete.  Any help would be appriciated.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. You'll only be able to read, not write, an NTFS volume. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • Can't boot PB 17" from external drive using Firewire

Title says it all. I've got a WD My Book 500MHz external drive with Tiger loaded on it. The startup drive panel shows it as a bootable drive, but when I select it and restart, the PB briefly displays the question mark folder and then defaults to the internal HD running Leopard.
I repaired disk permissions on both drives, but still no success. Any ideas?
    John

Thanks. According to Western Digital, some versions of this drive are bootable, though the Studio Edition I have is not. See the WD My Book page for a list of what they say are bootable versions.
That page at the bottom also gives a procedure using Disk Utility to make any My Book bootable. I tried it twice, however, and no go. The issue you raised must be the catch.

  • Trying to boot from external drive using Startup manager

    Hello forum geniuses
I would first like to make an announcement...my loved and cherished iMac G5 has moved on to the next life. Something to do with the motherboard. Your thoughts and prayers are welcome...
But some part of her may live on! You see, we had the hard drive taken out and put into one of those Hard drive shells, so it now works as an external hard drive. I plugged it into another iMac G5 and it works fine as an EXHD. However, I have been working with some very complex Final Cut pro projects so I ideally I want to boot the computer from my original hard disk to preserve all of my file paths. Since it is the original system disk, it should contain an installed copy of Mac OS 10.4 and the original system folder, and it should work as intended, correct?
The problem is, when I hold down the "option" key at startup, I don't get my old hard drive (which is now an external plugged in through firewire, for those playing at home) as a bootable option.
Does anyone know where I'm going wrong here?

Thanks for the reply. A couple of things...
Using my iBook laptop, I booted from the original drive from my old computer and it worked perfectly. Startup manager allowed me to select it and it preserved all my settings and data without a hitch. Exactly what I WANT to happen on the other G5
Remember, this isn't a clone or a copy of my old hard drive - it is the ACTUAL hard drive with an enclosure that allows me to plug it in as an external - so it has to be made bootable, since it is the original.
Also, I can't transfer my data from the original hard drive to the other iMac because there is more than 200GB of data on the original and the other one only has a 120GB hard drive.
So I think the question is, if the standard startup procedure works on my iBook why isn't it working on the iMac G5?

Can I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer? Under Get Photos, I select import  from folders/files but after browsing to the external hard drive the copy option is disabled/greyed out. I there a method to import and copy?

That would be mounted as an internal drive and hence the corresponding option is not checked during Import.
Once you import the media form this drive, you can select all and go for File >> Copy/Move files option and copy them wherever you want to.
    Hope this helps

  • Broken in Logic 9?: Reindex loops from external drive

Adding loops from an external drive in Logic 9 does not seem to work any longer. It used to work great in L8. Anyone have similar experiences? Know any work arounds? Is it a bug? If it's a bug I'll file it with Apple.
Previously in Logic 8 it was easy to reindex loops on an external drive:
    (1) Delete the loop indexes from root/Library/Audio/Apple Loops Index
    (2) Use Finder to locate the loops on the external
    (3) Drag the loop folders into the L8 media browser.
    (4) L8 asks if you want to copy the loops or use them from their present location. Select present location intsead of copy locally.
    (5) L8 takes 5-20 minutes to build index of loops from external drive
I have tried this procedure several times in L9 without success. Instead I get the following:
    (1) Delete the loop indexes from root/Library/Audio/Apple Loops
    (2) Use Finder to locate the loops on the external
    (3) Drag the loop folders into the L8 media browser.
    (4) L9 ask for my admin password.
    (5) Enter my password
    (6) I'm NOT asked if I want to copy loops locally or use them in their present location. Instead a reindex progress dialog comes up for 2 seconds then goes away.
    (7) In the end nothing happened. No loops copied, indexed, or anything
There is only one way I managed to get loops into L9 but it is exactly what I'm NOT looking for:
    (1) In the folder with all my loops spotlight search ".CAF" (In this case want to reindex Apple content which is all CAF)
    (2) Make sure to click "show more" at the bottom of the search results.
    (3) Drag the search results to the loop browser.
    (4) L9 indexes them all right, AND also copies them to my user library! All 30 GBs worth. Definitely not what I want.
In the end, I had to reinstall the Loops from the DVDs and specify an external location for them. (This whole mess got started when I tried to move the GarageBand and iLife loops to an external drive. The installer does not let you specify a location for them.)
Just so you know I've done some homework:
I've scoured other Logic forums and found these relevant threads that in the end did not solve the issue. They mostly seem to refer to Logic 8 which does not have this issue.

Thread 3 this fellow seems to have a similar problem as I. He drags folders into the loop browser but nothing happens.

    Thread 2

I just installed LP9 and all my loops and samples are on external drives. The drag and drop onto the browser method worked fine and I WAS given the option to move the files or not. The only exception to the above is Ultrabeat samples. They seem to want to be on the System drive.

  • "attempting to copy to [external drive] failed. the disk could not be read"

this is a problem on my 2x3GHz quad-core intel xeon macPro running os 10.5.7, and itunes 8.2. i have a 1TB external hard drive (firewire 800) that holds all my music for itunes. i have never had any problem with this setup before, until recently.
once, a while back i got an error on my itunes (that popped up without me doing anything.. seemingly random) saying something about not being able to save the itunes library. that went away after a restart, and hasn't returned.
BUT a new problem now happens any time i try to add more music to my itunes library. i have always added music to itunes by setting up my preferences "add file to library" and have the itunes library pointing to my external hard drive. then by dragging the files on-top of a playlist, it sorts and adds the files to my external hard drive. i have been using this process for years without any glitches.
now when i try to drag files into itunes, i get: "attempting to copy to [external drive] failed. the disk could not be read from or written to"
i double checked the read/write privileges on my external drive and nothing has changed since i got it. (it's still read/write access for my user.. and i've even tried putting a "read/write" for "all" as well. no dice)

thanks, that actually doesn't help the issue i'm having.
but now the problem has expanded to finder and everything else. so i'm pretty sure the external hard drive is starting to go out. i'm currently attempting to back up all 700GB of info from the drive.

  • Why won't photos from external drive stay on my computer (iPhoto) once I disconnect the external drive?

I'm trying to move photos from my external drive to my new computer.  When I connect the external drive, I'm able to view all the photos in iPhoto, and I'm able to drag photos to a desktop folder and/or directly into iPhoto.  But, when I disconnect the external drive, I no longer have access to the photos on my computer.  I'm sure there's a step I may be overlooking but I'm using the same process I've used in the past and cannot determine next steps.

    Thanks so far.
    I'm currently working on a 2012 MacBook Air 13", running OSX 10.8.
Upon opening my external drive, I've dragged the iPhoto Library to my computer's desktop.  When I've opened iPhoto and tried to import the library (from external drive and/or from the desktop), I'm unable to do so, i.e., the library is not highlighted (it won't allow me to click on it).
I can open and view the library from my external drive in iPhoto when the external drive is connected to the computer.  But, once the external drive is disconnected from the computer, I'm unable to view the library
I've tried all of the aforementioned when the "Copy Imported Item(s) to the iPhoto Library" is checked.

  • Leopard Won't Boot from External Drive

I'm using an iBook G4 running Mac OS X 10.4.10. I just purchased a Western Digital 320GB eSATA external hard drive to use as an external Leopard boot disk because my internal hard drive does not work (I've been using a 20GB Lacie external hard drive as my boot drive up to now).
I have installed Leopard onto the new external drive using the Leopard install DVD. The installation was successful, and the new external drive mounts on the desktop. In addition, I can see all of its contents, and it appears as a startup disk in the startup disk preference panel. However, when I select it as the startup disk and restart the computer, it will not boot from the new external drive.
    Notes:
    1. The drive is formatted in the Apple Partition Map scheme.
    2. I have pressed "option" during restart, but the drive does not appear.
    3. I have restarted with only the new hard drive connected to the cpu, to no avail.
Am I missing something? Please assist.
    Thanks!

I've been trying all day to boot from my external HD after installing Leopard on both my HD and external HD. I was convinced that my external HD volume wasn't being read and recognized. What I discovered a while ago was that my internal HD volume always shows up at the top of the list on my desktop whether it's the volume running or not!!
When running 10.4.11 and booting from the external HD, the icon for the external HD volume always appeared at the top on the desktop, over the internal HD icon. That's how I could remember which one I was on. That's not happening now. I may have been working on the backup for half the day and not known it.
The only way I'm able to tell for sure which is the active drive is to check the User folder to see whether the House/Home icon appears (the system running) or the name is in text (the system not running).
Is there some way to change that or is it a glitch in Leopard? It's weird!
