I'm not sure I understand this. Are you trying to log in to a network account or to another local account? If the latter, have you tried resetting the password of that account as administrator? If it's a network account, then the network administrator should be able to help you.

Back up from time machine and first new tm machine back up on new mac

i just made a back up from time machine into a new iMac...
no i need to configure again TM for the new mac but even if i use the same TM disc the first new back up doesn't write onto the old one so I need to make a new back up from scratch... can't I keep on writing over the old one?

I can go to finder, and find my files under the "shared>airport time capsule" menu, but I don't know how to safely and accurately restore the iPhoto library to the current iMac's iPhoto.
Most of the searches I did on this topic kept advising to enter time machine, find your file and hit restore, but I can not select files from my macbook's backup in time machine on the current iMac.

This seemed to do the trick. I found the iPhoto library file and chose restore. The question now is where to put the iPhoto library file.

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is.

The Apple article will transfer everything from one volume to another. Doing what you want is not simple, unfortunately.
See Transferring Home Folders not on a Startup volume, especially scenario #1 in the gray box there.

If you are connected to the internet you can do this.
Boot your computer and immediately hold down command, option and R (three keys together). This gets you connected with internet recovery.

This process installs an OS on your blank drive. You can then boot from the fresh OS installation and restore from your Time Machine back up.
Note that you cannot boot from a TM back up.

Hi,
I had to erase HDD/SDD on my 2011 iMac with both SSD and HDD drives. The system was installed on the 256 GB SSD ("Macintosh HD) and the user accounts on the much larger 2 TB HDD ("Macintosh HD 2"). I was able to restore the SSD with the system, software etc. Also one smaller account that was previously on the SSD also made the cut. However, I didn't figure out how to restore also the contents to the HDD and whenever I've tried to use the Migration Assistant I was told that there is no need to restore the user accounts that were sitting on the HDD (in fact, Migration Assistant said that there is only "1 kb" to transfer). I've then tried to manually copy the user accounts from time machine (on a Time Capsule) to the HDD but I've waited for hours (my account is roughly 1 TB big) - only to get error messages about permissions. Same story happened when I tried to log into my empty user account and tried to use time machine to restore my folders.
How is this system supposed to work in the first place? Shouldn't the user accounts on the HDD be restored 'automatically' during a restore or when using migration assistant?

We've asked Apple to address this, but it doesn't seem real common, and would make the Assistants rather complicated, especially for newbies.

Yeah, it ends up being a bit of a conundrum. That's why it's often best to leave the home folders on the Startup drive, but put the data on the HD.
I've made a note to try to find a better workaround for your situation (the Disk Utility thing is fine, space permitting). I tried a bunch of finagles when I wrote that page, but maybe something will turn up with a fresh start.
Retrospectively, perhaps, it was a mistake to have the time machine backup sitting on a user account specific folder on the time capsule (named after my first name) instead of the standard "Data". Both the setup assistant after flatting the drives and reinstalling 10.8 and the Migration Assistant seem to have had trouble to recognise the password protected location.
It does complicate things.
For the future I'd loved to know what one could do to streamline this should the need arise again?
What I'm thinking of is, if you still have access to the old Mac, to create default home folders on the SSD, point the accounts to them, so they can sign on. Then either transfer directly from the old Mac, or do a backup and transfer from it. Log on to each user account, copy the home folder, then redirect the account to that one. Sounds promising, but there are a couple of "gotchas" there, I think.
I'll let you know, and revise that page accordingly, if I figure something out.

My Macbook pro was stollen about 2 months ago and i'm currently debating on which Macbook retina I should get, the higher 13" or the higher 15" model. In either case, how do I go about restoring the system to which my old macbook pro was at ? i.e getting the same itunes songs files, iPhoto pictures etc.
I have read that if the version of the os x in the time machine was an earlier than that on the new machine it would cause problems. so how do can I work around that if i face this problem ?
One last question, how can I know the space needed on the new system for the restoration from the time machine?

The new machine will boot into Setup Assistant, and you'll be prompted to import the data from a Time Machine backup, among other options. A system-version mismatch is OK.

My iMac is configures as follows :
- the internal hd contains the apps/etc
- my home path is pointed to my external usb hard drive (/volumes/hd300gb/users/danygeller)
Is working perfectly and time machine backs it up correctly...
NOW, I need to replace this hard drive with a larger one 750gb.
So, how can i restore Time machine to this new drive ? What's the procedure ?
