Copy from xServe RAID to firewire drive is crashing my OS...

Fellow mac users,
I am a relatively new OS X system admin and I am having a hard time copying files from my xServe RAID to a firewire drive to do an intermittent backup. When I try to copy the files over it crashes the OS without fail. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard or seen of this before? It's rather discouraging when all I'm trying to do is get a quick backup of the RAID which is only 300 gb in size currently.
Our hardware is very good, we have a dual 2.3 G5 model with 3 gb of RAM so I know the hardware can handle a simple finder copy. The only idea I have is to do a "ditto" in the terminal. I thought I'd ask for input from the resident apple sages before trying that. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas for me?
Thanks for any help,
Thomas
xServe Dual G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Be sure you have the external drive connected when you boot from the installer disc. Use the OS X Installer One disc that came with your MacBook. After you boot from the installer and select your language select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) for the external drive from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Click on the Options button, select the GUID partition scheme and click on the OK button. Set the Format drop down menu to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the number of partitions from the Partition drop down menu to one (1). Click on the Partition button. Wait for the volume to mount on the Desktop.
Quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation. When you get to the part where you select a destination click on the icon for the external hard drive.

  • Copying between XServer RAIDs problem

I have two XServer RAIDs connected through a fiber switch to an XServe G4 1.33GHz running 10.4.3.
When I try and copy a folder of about 3,000 files (1.27TB) from one RAID to the other, I get a few hundred of the files and then the drives disappear from the desktop and the copy fails. I have to restart the XServe to get the drives to show back up. Any ideas?

The switch is a Vixel Emulex 355 12-port. The ports are not disappearing. The only thing I have to do is restart the server to get the RAIDs to show backup. I have tried restarting the RAIDs and the switch, but it seems to be a problem with the XServe. Wonder if the Fiber Card in the XServe could be having a problem? That is a LSILogic LSI7202P Firmware 0.0.0, Fcode 1.00.29.

  • Xserve RAID installing Firewire 800

    Hi,
would like to know if it is possible to replace nor insert a firewire800 card on an Xserve RAID?
at the moment we can't afford yet to use Fiber Channel, so we are wondering if we can use the RAID in firewire connection?
    Let me know...
    Best Regards

    Using XServe RAID? No.
The XServe RAID uses a Fiber Channel interface to the host system. FireWire is not an option.
Im not sure I understand your question, though. The cost of the Fiber Channel card for the host system is $500, not much when you consider the cost of the XServe RAID itself. If you already have an XServe RAID then there's not really much additional cost.
On the other hand, if you don't have an XServe RAID and you're looking for a RAID solution (not necessarily an XServe RAID), then you can build a RAID system out of any attached drives, whether they're FireWire, S/ATA, SCSI, or any other supported interface.

  • Cannot Boot from OSX on external firewire drive

I recently bought a seagate hardrive and installed it in an external firewire casing. I partitioned it into two partitions, and installed osx 10.4.10 on one of the partitions, the same as is running on my Ti Book.
I tried selecting the os on the firewire drive as the startup disk, but when i restart, after the grey screen i get the flashing question mark icon, until the mac recognises only the default osx on the internal drive and boots with that instead.
That not working, i created a clone of my startup disk using DejaVu in my system preferences and saved it on the other, empty partition on the external drive and tried booting from that.
On restarting, i get the grey screen once again as the backlight fires up, and nothing more. the screen remains grey without any further ado until i hold the power button and force it to turn off. then as i start it up again, up comes the flashing question mark icon followed by a boot from the internal drive.
    Any Solutions on this?
    Many Thanks, Neptune.

    Hi Dale,
Whoops- everythings not as smooth as i thought it was!
since i restored my internal drive, a lot of things have been really messed up, starting with, for example, iTunes reverting to version 4 instead of 7. that wasnt a problem, i still had the 7 installer, and soon had my whole music library back again. but the computer appears to have a problem with the handling of graphics. the finder wont create previews of even simple jpeg images, nor will it for video. quicktime wont open any video file, i get some random error message which i cant remember stating it could not open the file. and if i view my finder window in grid icon view, the usual blue mac os desktop image that i keep as a background in the finder window isnt there, instead its pitch black. same goes for the slideshow feature in the application graphic converter, i can start a slideshow and it will scroll through the images, but every image will instead be completely black. there are no scroll bars in itunes. i can scroll down randomly by clicking where the scroll bar should be, but there is nothing visual there at all, no scroll bar, no arrows. when i connect my ipod, the main ipod window of itunes wont display any graphics either, be it the picture of the ipod or the capacity bar indicating usage of the drive for music, videos, data, etc. instead, fine print says something similar to 'cannot display image, quicktime and lzw tiff decompression plugin (?) required' I cant remember word for word what it says, dont quote me on that.
the computer also came to a dead freeze twice in ten minutes, i had to hold the power button down to get it to shut off.
im sure there are other issues too which i havent yet noticed, but even these, i havent the faintest clue what could be causing them!
    do you?

  • XServe RAID - Possible Dead Drive

I'm running a G5 XServe with RAID 5 - I have 3 80 GB drives, and it has slowed significantly recently - when loading some software today, I see that one of the drive lights (power light is on) was not blinking showing activity... I think the drive may be dead. Any software utility that I can use to check on the health of the drives?

    Hi randolph,
This forum is about the xserve RAID, aphyiscal box that can contain 14 disks and connects through fibre channel.
I suggest you ask your question in a more apropriate forum, there will be more knowkedge about your question there.
(To get you started: I would check the disk first with disk utility)

  • Data Rate from XServe Raid

    Hello all,
I have what I thought would be a simple question, but I've found nothing anywhere to answer it.
We have a new G5 Quad and an XServe Raid connected via Fibre Channel with 4 500 GB drive modules. Our Video capture card is the Decklink Extreme SD, but my employer has found a firm that will transfer our Cinealta HDCam tapes at full HD onto hard drives for transfer into our system. He then wants to work in full 10 bit uncompressed 4:2:2 HD (1080i) for editing.
I have tried several RAID configurations and used the Decklink Drive Speed Test Utility and found that the fastest data rate I am able to achieve is around 75 MB/sec (using RAID 0), which, according to the utility is only good for about 15 fps at 10 bit 4:2:2 1080.
So my question is this: How many Xserve Raid drive modules striped as RAID 0 would we need to achieve the 182.3 MB/sec data rate (according to the FCP manual) required to edit in full 10 bit 4:2:2 at 1080i at 24-30 fps? Is it simply a matter of doubling the 4 we now have? or is there some other calculation that would be required?
    Thanks for the help

Figure conservatively that each fully loaded controller (7 drives) in an Xserve RAID will give you 80 to 100 MB/sec. 160 to 200 MB/sec for both controllers fully loaded.
With an Xserve RAID, RAID 5 will give you almost the same bandwidth as RAID 0, so there's insufficient reason to forego the file protection of RAID 5.
Then, when you stripe the two sides together in Disk Utility, you should be getting more than 200 MB/sec, enough for a single stream of uncompressed 1080i, but probably not enough for two streams. It depends.

  • Xserve Not Mounting Firewire Drive and Keyboard Not Working On KVM Switch

A couple of days ago I was swapping out my monthly firewire(800) backup to put the daily one back in place and my daily firewire backup drive will not mount. I've tried swapping out the cables, tried USB and Firewire400 with no avail. I tested the drive on my G5 and whapaa it mounted right away and the data is readable. For some reason my Xserve ignores it. I checked that the lock is in the unlock position so that's not the issue. I ran an xrdiags test last night and it came out fine. I also applied all of the latest updates. HELP!!!
Not sure if this is related, but my Xserve has begun to ignore my KVM switch so I have not direct keyboard/mouse connection. What could be the problem?
The backup drives are Western Digital My Books.

Problem fixed. Follow the instructions on this KB article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88338
So if you ever have these symptoms, follow the instrucions above, it works like a charm.

  • File in use error - copying from a faulty external hard drive

    Hi,
I have a 750GB Western Digital external hard drive, which contains two partitions - (1) HDBACKUP - a Time Machine backup of my laptop drive, and (2) MEDIA - pictures including an Aperture library, and videos.
When I plug the drive in, only the MEDIA partition mounts. And I get an error saying Disk Utility cannot repair the drive and to backup the files as soon as I can, and reformat the drive.
When I try to copy the files onto another drive using Finder, it copies part of the file and then gives me a "File in use" error and stops. I tried copying via Terminal and its the same - this time I get a "Resource busy" error.
There are no other apps accessing the files. And this happens for every file on the drive.
So how do I go about copying the files off the drive?
I tried using DiskWarrior but it was stuck on Step 1 - Searching for Volume Information, after 3 hours.
I really need to get the Aperture Library off the drive. Any ideas on how I can copy it across?
    Thanks

This did not work. I still get an error trying to repair with Disk Utility.
    It gets to
    Starting repair tool:
    Checking file system
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking catalog hierarchy.
    Checking extended attributes file.
The volume MEDIA could not be verified completely.
    Volume repair complete.
Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
So DiskUtility tells me to backup as many files as possible. However, when I try copying these files, I get a "File in use" error.

  • Firewire driver causes crash on wake up

Every time I wake up my Mac Pro I get a crash report, that Leopard quit. The culprit I have found out is the Apple driver for my Saffire audio device which uses the apple firewire. My only choice is never to let my mac sleep, which I find unacceptable.
Does anyone have an idea about a fix or wether apple has plans to update their firewire drivers?

If anyone did have an idea when an update was forthcoming, the Terms of Use of this forum, and their non-disclosure agreement would forbid them from saying.
I would say this, contact the manufactuers of Saffire Audio, and inform them their firmware needs to be updated for Energy Saver compatibility. Not all peripheral vendors know the Energy Saver standards that Apple uses.
In the meantime, you can use a Screen Saver instead of Energy Saver of a picture filling the screen with black, or download the freeware Mac Brightness. I can't find the link right now as Versiontracker appears to be down from where I'm at.

  • Copying from numbers to prism causes Prism to crash

Can anyone tell me how to convert back to the previous version of number? As now I can not copy and paste from numbers into prism as it crashes, as does the excel for mac so now its impossible to do work as I have to hand type all the numbers into prism.

Ok, I'm having a little trouble reconciling this statement in your original post:
as does the excel for mac
with this in your latest post:
its not copying between numbers and excel that's the problem
If you are in fact able to copy-paste into Excel from Numbers 3 than you should be able to copy-paste into Prism too.
It seems very likely there's something specific in your dataset that needs correcting anyway.  It's much less likely that this is a Numbers 2 vs Numbers 3 issue, assuming you have the latest version of Numbers 3 (3.2).

  • Firewire Drive Causes Crash at Startup, Safe Boot OK

I have a LaCie External Drive that all of a sudden decided to start causing OSX to crash at startup. While connected booting normally brings up the "need to restart" screen, booting in Single User causes a Kernel Panic, Safe Boot is ok, Booting from Install Disk is ok, but as soon as I connect the drive it's "you need to restart..."
    So far i have tried the following;
Zapped the PRAM, repaired permissions normally while disconnected, repaired permissions in Safe Boot while connected, and repaired permissions from Install CD while connected.
My question is of course, what can be causing this problem and how do I fix?
I have sifted through previous discussions but was unable to find an answer, so I apologize if this is a duplicate. Also, if anyone knows of a better category to list this I would appreciate input. Thanks!

    DOH!
Like everything else in life, the simplest solution is best. after remembering that the drive is both USB and FW i dug up my cables and tried the USB connection and...all better. So yes, I guess this would prove that the FW port is to blame.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Starting up from external partitioned firewire drive

    Hi all,
I have a lacie external firewire drive. I have it partitioned. One partition has a copy of OSX. If i start up on my main drive and set the "start up disk" preferences to the OSX partition on the external drive my G5 will start up on the OSX partition.
However, if i don't set the "start up disk" preferences to the partitioned firewire drive and i try holding down the "option" key during a cold start the G5 won't recognize the partitioned OSX as an option.
I want to have this external copy of OSX as an emergency start up using the "option" key during a cold start.
For the last two years i've used a non-partitioned external firewire drive with OSX installed as an emergency start up disk and the G5 has always recognized the drive while holding down the "option" key from a cold start.
Now that i have OSX on a partitioned external drive, a cold start holding down the "option" key won't recognize the external OSX.
    Any ideas?
Also, if i'm not able to start up from this partitioned firewire drive, are there any special instructions for creating a DVD copy of OSX to use as an emergenct start up disk?
    Paul

    Allan,
I can boot fine from the external, partitioned firewire drive if i first set my "start up disk" preferences to the external drive.
But i if have my "system startup disk" preferences set to the internal drive (as it is normally), shut the machine down, then try a cold start holding down the "option" key, the G5 won't recognize the external drive (partitioned) as an optional system from which to start up from.
In the past, i've dedicated an entire external firewire drive (NOT partitioned) as my emergency start up disk and when i did a cold start of the G5 holding down the "option" key, the G5 had no problems recognizing the external (not partitioned) drive as an optional system for start up.
I'm wondering if by partitioning the external firewire drive i have some how rendered the external drive useless as an alternate start up device.
    Questions, questions ...

  • Can you combine the two sides of an Xserve RAID into a single drive?

I am looking to combine my Xserve sides into a single drive so that it will be more efficient for storing beyond hi-def video. I have an Xserve RAID with 14x750GB drives which format in RAID5 down to 4.09TB per side. I want to create a singe 8.18TB drive from these.
Is there an easy way to do it?

Thanks for the info William, I did backup a few important files before this happened, but I would like to get to a few more.
It happened when our IT guy was showing me how to create a new RAID set. He created a set while explaining a few things, then selected the new one he made, and deleted it. Right then, both sets disappeared and were deleted, the empty one he made, and the one we needed. I was watching him, and he didn't select both, just the empty one he'd made. So, I was hoping that there would be a work around just so that I could maybe use a data rescue utility to possibly pair the 2 together long enough for me to back up some files.
If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know.
    thank you.
