Copy images to larger drive and LR linking

I’m using Lightroom 4.x on Mac Pro, 10.6.8 OS.  MY 1TB internal drive is full so I want to copy all my images to a new 4TB internal drive.  I also want to make a back up copy to an external hard drive but not necessarily at the same time.
What is the best way to do this so that Lightroom will have no problem linking to my photos?  I’m thinking that making a clone copy via SuperDuper or CCC??
After making the copies to the new larger “originals” hard drive and back up drive, how do I get Lightroom to recognize and to open up the new "originals" drive and link to all my photos?

If you simply copied the folder, leaving it in its original location, you will have to rename that folder with Lightroom closed before Lightroom will show the folders as missing. I can understand your wanting to simply copy the folder to the new drive. But something has to change in order for Lightroom to consider the folder as missing. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to link to it on the new drive.
I simply copied the folder.  I used your suggestion to rename the name of the folder at the original location and indeed there are many "?".  The issue still is that the new drive does not appear at all in the list in LR, so I am not able to select anything on the new drive in order to be able to link to it.  How do I get the new drive itself to appear on the list on the left side of the LR library panel.  The new drive shows up on the desktop but not in LR.  I've had to link to photos many times in the past so I'm familiar with that process, but I don't know why the hard drive isn't showing up in LR.

  • Copied images from flash drive and they are invisible. how do I make them visible

I have copied some image files (jpeg format) from a flash drive onto my imac. When I go to view the images they do not appear. When I try to copy them again, there is a message that I cannot modify invisible images. These images were originally downloaded to a windows-based computer and copied to the flash drive. Is there a way to make these image files visible? I am trying to use them for a website. Thanks!

Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. Enter at the prompt:
    chflags nohidden
After the word "hidden" put a space and type in the path to and name of the file. For example, if they are on the Desktop: chflags nohidden ~/Desktop/name_of_file. Include the file's extension. Press RETURN. If all the files have the same extensions, then use chflags nohidden ~/Desktop/*.jpg or *.jpeg.

Hi Lily, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
A screenshot can capture almost anything you're viewing. Hold the command and shift keys down, then press the 4 key and release all keys. Hold down the mouse button and drag the cursor to the size/area of the image you want to capture. Release the mouse button and you've captured the image. • How to edit images on local drive and then archive to external?

I have a Drobo that I use to archive my permanent lightroom archive and image files. Currently, everything lightroom resides on this external drive. But the Drobo is no where near as fast as my internal hard drive as far as read/write and seek speed. I was wondering if there is a fairly easy way for me to work with my most recent import of images off of my internal hard drive and then "move" the images to the drobo once my post-processing is complete. I'm thinking storing the catalog on my internal drive would make sense as well and then use lightroom's built in catalog backup feature to backup the catalog file to the external drive. Any suggestions for those of you out there using Drobos or other large external storage devices on some type of "best practice" would be great. I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere in the forum; I searched but I couldn't find anything.

You can do exactly that, I do it all the times. Import your photos to an internal drive, work on them, and once you're done with the major work, move the photos or folder(s) from within LR to your drobo. LR will keep track of where your photos are if you move them from within LR.
I even sometimes move an image to a tomporary directory on a local drive from my NAS storage before opening it in PSE, since the building of a large TIFF takes forever on my NAS. I then move it back after finishing my work.

I think that's a good way of handling it.
Please also be aware of the fact that the most important performance topics are access times to
    Catalog
    Previews
    ACR cache (!!)
Access time to the raw file itself is actually not the most important issue.

  • Archiving selected images on hard drive and removing from i-photo

    My library is getting big.
I would like to move selected image files from i-photo to a hard drive, and then delete the i-photo versions.
    Can this be done?
    Thanks in advance

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Yes, but what exactly do you want to do.
For instance, you can simply export the pics from the Library (File -> Export) to a folder on the external, and then trash them from iPhoto (put them in the iPhoto trash, empty it). Result, images gone from your internal disk and iPhoto, folder of images on the external.
    Another way is as follows:
Copy your iPhoto Library on the External (Go to your Pictures Folder and drag the iPhoto Library to the external.
Now you have two full libraries.
On the Internal, remove the unwanted pics. (as above)
Now you have two libraries: a full intact one on the external, a smaller subset on the Internal.
As you add pics to the internal, use iPhoto Library Manager to keep the full version on the external up-to-date.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager
The advantage to the second option is that your pics are still safely managed by iPhoto.

  • Resize image from local drive and upload to server

    Hi there
I want to allow the user to chose an image from his local
    hard drive.
The image should then be loaded into the Flex 2 application.
There I wanna show him infos about the image e.g. height and
    width.
He should then be able to scale/resize the image and upload
    it to the server.
I have no idea how to do that :-)
    Any thoughts on that?
    Thanks in advance
    Bernd

Well in short, you need a second language to support that,
    e.g. PHP/ASP/CF.
First you'll have to build a GUi in which you can upload the
jpg, putting it to the server using php/asp/cf, then you'll need to
make a call to that image, (importing it into your flex), then
you'll have to set the parameters for the resizing, then you'll
have to call a php/asp/cf script which does te resizing

  • HDD died, replaced with a larger drive and can't restore from TM/TC

One of my kids managed to fry the HDD in my trusty MacBook. Luckily, I have everything backed up via TM onto our Time Capsule.
I installed a new drive and formatted/partitioned it with a 10.5.2 MacBook boot disc. The problem now is the disc will not open TM so I can run a complete data restore from the TC. When I select the TM utility from the pulldown, nothing happens. The machine just sits there, although I've verified that it is connected to the TC via our home network.
I also receive a dialogue that System 10 cannot be installed on my machine, although it was running 10.5.6 perfectly before the HDD crashed.
I've just purchased a Leopard retail full install disc, thinking that will be the solution to successfully moving all the data from TC back to my machine.
I wonder whether there's a quick(er) solution to this whole thing, and whether I didn't waste money buying a new Leopard install disc.
    Thoughts?

If the disc you're using gets as far as the option to restore from backup, it should be fine. After selecting +Restore from Backup+ you should get another screen allowing you to select your TM drive, or search for a Time Capsule.
Do you not get that screen at all, or do you get it but it's empty and can't find your TC?
I don't know much about Time Capsules, but can you connect it directly to your Mac via Ethernet?
That might get the installer to recognize it, and if so, the restore will be much, much faster.

  • File copy with 2 IDE Drive and Soundblaster problem

    Hi,
When i try to copy large files my system will usually lock (windows totally freezes, the only solution is to do a hard reset). I cut the problem down to beeing an issue with my sound blaster live platinum 5.1.
Everything is working fine when I remove the soundblaster.
I read somewhere that this problem was known with former motherboard with VIA chipset like KT133 but I was hoping it had been fixed since then...
    Here's my config :
    KT6 Delta 2 FISR
    Athlon Barton 2500+
    512 Mo  RAM
2 IDE Drive (not on the same IDE connector)
Creative Live Sound Blaster Platinum 5.1 (CT4830)
I have upgraded all the possible drivers : VIA4in1 (v4.51), latest BIOS upgrade (E6590v2.0), latest creative drivers....
I tried a lot of different settings in the BIOS (PCI latency, PCI bus mastering etc...)
    This is really anoying...
    Please help !!!

    change pci latency to 96.
change "system performance setting" within DRAM settings to "FAST"
    you could also;
try changing "System Bios Cachable" to "Enabled"
and change "C000 Shadow" to "Cacheable"
im using all those above settings, and thats with ALOT of drives attached as well, and ive been copying 20+GB files all over the place including over network drives.

  • Can I burn bigger-than-DVD image onto hard drive and run it off hard drive?

I'm trying to create a DVD Kiosk of sorts. I have a series of instructional videos we have created--I would like it to play a video from the menu randomly if left alone for a period of time, and if someone moves the mouse, they will be given the DVD menu from which they can select one of the videos. This will take a lot of script writing, of course, and I also have more videos than will fit on one DVD.
*What I need to know is: Will Final Cut let me burn a disc image that's bigger than 4.7GB onto my hard drive so that I can just run this directly from a Mac Mini? If not directly possible when saving it, is there a work around?*
Additionally, if anyone has any wisdom or knows of any resources that would assist in writing such a script, that's also welcome.
    Thanks for your help.

The short answer is yes. You don't need (or want) a disc image. You want just the folders from the build (AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS). You will get warnings but it will do it. You can also set up DVDSP to make a DVD-9 disc so you can get an idea of the project's size as you work and not get the warnings.
Within DVD authoring there is no way to recognize a mouse movement, but you could have an overlay that says GO to Menu on these random playing clips. Now to do this without doubling the assets for the motion clips (one with/one without overlay) you need to right a script that controls when the overlay shows. From menu timeout overlay on. From user action overlay off.
btw its not Final Cut that will make the image but DVD Studio Pro.

  • Networked Drives and Symbolic Links in Mavericks

So I have tried this a few times on my own... and I ended up deleteing all my contect with sudo in terminal.....  I have everything restored now... but before I proceed, i thought I would get some help from those that know alot more...
Here is the scenario..  I have a MBP Late 2013 with mavericks installed..  I have a Networked drive at smb://192.168.1.1/  that is mounted and and accessable through finder no problem, and I have it set to reconnect at login so its always there....  there is no permissions for the networked drive its accessable to everyone...  I want to take my itunes music and put it on the networked drive at smb://192.168.1.1/Music and have itunes access it from there like it was on the local drive....  so I started reading up on symbolic links
I have had no luck with ln -s in terminal, i keep getting told the directory doesnt exist... this is the exact line i have been triying  [ln -s smb://192.168.1.1/Music ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Music]  i thought it may have been a permission issue hence my ussage of sudo... but because of my ignorance I just ended up deleting everything..... what am i missing or doing wrong...  someone please help!
    Anthony

    Just for some clarification...
A simple saying that someone told me ages ago...   "root is God"
When you use the sudo command you are doing the command as root.  The "rm" command means remove,  the "-r" means that you want the command to be done recursively so it will do the same command in any nested folders, and the "f' means to force the command..  even if it has any errors or is a file that root knows that you shouldnt do a command on..
So basically you told god to remove everything in your music folder, no matter how deep its nested, even if doing so would be immoral and against gods better judgement.

  • I need help on back up and more storage for photos and videos.  I have a imac (500g) that I back up to a 500g hard drive using time machine.  How do I set up a larger hd and back that up as well?

I can buy a 1T hd to store photos and videos to, but would need a second one to back that up as well?  I guess I need to know how to get aperture and iphoto to keep my photos on a larger drive and how to keep both the imac and that larger hd backed up.  Note- we can't get  DSL, so off site back up isn't a viable option.

  • I moved my Backups.backupdb folder to a larger hard drive and the transfer went fine with the space taken was correct but when i open my Backups.backupdb folder and browse there is actually no folders or files, the folder shows 280gig used but empty?

So i draged my time machine Backups.backupdb folder from my external hard drive to a larger external hard drive, the folder size was 280gig and took some time to transfer and once transfered i checked the size on the larger drive and the folder size was correct 280 gig. Job done i thought but the next day (stupidly after formating my oringinal drive) checked the Backups.backupdb i see that there is actually no folders or files in the Backups.backupdb??? when transfer the file it shows the 280 gig and names the files being tranfered but i just can't find them. Any clues how i can acces these files?
Thank you in advance for any help and let me know if any specifics are needed

That is not the proper way to do what you want. You need to use Disk Utility to clone the old backup drive to the new backup drive.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new backup drive. Source means the old backup drive.

  • I have a G4 Quicksilver running 10.5.8. Because the oS is on a small hard drive I coied the folders from that HD to a much larger drive via an external  USB drive enclosure. I then installed the larger drive as an internal in the G4, but it does not show

I have a G4 Quicksilver running 10.5.8. The OS is on a small HD  with no room for adding any info or applications, so I have copied the OS to a much larger HD in an external USB enclosure. I dragged each folder from the small drive to the larger drive. I can access the applications when the large drive is set as an external drive, but when I installed it internally it would not show up on the Start Up Disc utility and I can not boot from it. Did I do something wrong copying the OS? Can anyone tell me how to boot from the larger drive? Thanks

If your machine doesn't support large drives natively (Quicksilver 2002 and later) then doing as you are doing may lead to disaster.
If files are placed on a large drive and those files extend beyond the 128 GB limit of the controller, the first time the drive (internally) accesses data beyond the 128 GB region, the machine will crash and data loss a likely result.

  • Images Offline, NAS Drive in Finder but can't Reconnect

    Aperture 3.0.2, Mac OS 10.6.3
I have all referenced images on network drive. It's all there in the finder but aperture says it's offline. Furthermore, the reconnect button is always greyed out.
Even more odd is sometimes when I relaunch Aperture, it finds the images but they're ephemeral. (I can right-click to Show in Finder successfully once or twice then it's offline again.)
I have tried rebuilding library to no avail. I've tried copying referenced images to local drive and I still can't reconnect (greyed out) - I'm totally stumped.

I found the best articulation of the solution at MacCreate: http://aperture.maccreate.com/2008/03/01/reconnecting-images-in-aperture-2-when- moved-between-drives/
How the "Reconnect ... " dialog works is not at all obvious. In fact, it is somewhat misleading because so many of us were incensed over the apparent claim that our drives were offline.
I have come to understand that "offline", which appears in the "Status" column between the "Volume" and "Files" column does not pertain to the drive (Volume) but to the images (Files)! After successfully reconnecting Aperture to images in one particular folder of my external drive, the dialog then showed two lines for the same Volume: one showing the number of online files (the reconnected ones) and another line showing the number of offline files (not yet reconnected).
It would be clearer if the columns were labeled "Volume", "File Status", "No. of Files", but such labels would increase the column widths.

  • Moving data from 10.4 to a larger drive with 10.5

My wife has a MacBook 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.4 with a small internal drive. I bought a larger drive and I'm going to swap it out with a larger one and in the process install 10.5. I'm thinking of pulling the old drive, putting the new one in, loading on 10.5 on the new drive, then putting the old drive in an enclosure and move the files over.
Is that the best way I should do this? I know I could use Carbon Copy Cloner, but wouldn't it be better to do a fresh install?
Also, I'm wondering if I should partition the drive first so I can run Parallels on it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
    Bob

    Hi Bob,
Also, I'm wondering if I should partition the drive first so I can run Parallels on it.
No, no need & in fact detrimental to the use of OSX & Parallels, as OSX loves all the free space it can get.
Is that the best way I should do this?
I'd have the old Drive in the case first, then after installing 10.5 after the 1st boot you'll be given a chance to use Migration Assistant to import everything to the the new drive/OS, I'd do that.
