Copy iMessages from Mavericks to Yosemite?

Hi all:
I just did a clean install of Yosemite, looking to copy my iMessages history from my Mavericks system over. I tried copying the contents of ~/Messages over, but once I launch Messages, I it says "Messages is updating... The Messages database is being upgraded, please wait...". I let it sit for over 20 minutes, Activity Monitor shows little to no disk activity. Has anyone done this before? Seems there must be a bug causing the database upgrade function to hang. Any ideas?
Thanks!

The solution, for me, is here.

  • Copy Mail from Mavericks

Well this is one I have seen discussed many times and all the current links I find all relate to older versions of OS-X
From what I have seen, and remember, to copy the Mac Mail to a new machine, you copy the mail folder from :
    /Users/<username>/Library/
    and then the plist file
    from
    Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/
    Is this still the case?
Will this still work going from Mavericks to Yosemite?
I don't want to use the Migration assistant again..I have been using that for years now to upgrade and as can be seen from another thread of mine here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/27895863?ac_cid=op123456#27895863
That could well be the cause of my issues.
So a clean install is in order and a manual copy of just the items i need across...mail bing one of them, complete with my 6 POP mail boxes and all old e-mails and also full set of Rules, custom folders  etc.

    Hi Eric
Thanks for trying to help out, but as I said in my previous reply, I had found that Export mailbox command that you mention, but from what I see, that is precisely AALL it is, a Mailbox export, it does not export everything ...liek account settings , Rules, sub mail boxes etc etc.  It just exports individual mailboxes.
I have doen a clean install of Yosemite on a separate HDD, so I will create a new user on the new install, and import those Exported Mailboxes, but I expect that it is only going to be what it is ays it is..a Mailbox export , not a complete "Mail" export.
    thansk
I'll let yo know how it goes.,

  • Upgrade external HD from Mavericks to Yosemite

    Hi,
On my MBP I have installed Mavericks 10.9.5.
Then I have a couple of external hard drive with a clone of Mavericks 10.9.5.
If I have a cloned hard drive plugged in (not booting off from it), and I run the installer of Yosemite and I tell to install Yosetime on the external hard drive (where there’s a clone of Mavericks 10.9.5) what would then happen.
Would Yosemite erase everything from the clone, or would the clone upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite, else?
    Thanks

No, the Yosemite install will not erase everything on the clone.
Yes, the clone would upgrade from Mavericks to Yosemite. All your apps and data will not be touched.
I actually did something similar onto an SD card. I installed Yosemite 10.10, apps and data. Then later, I ran the 10.10.1 installer against the SD card and all that happened was Yosemite updated from 10.10 to 10.10.1. Nothing else was touched.

What is the best solution for migrating from Maverick to Yosemite? Anyone have suggestions?

Back up all data. Update all third-party software to the latest version and remove any you don't need. Download the Yosemite installer from the App Store. Run it.

Since upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite Mail, Spotlight, Mission Control and App-Store don´t work correctly. Is it possible to return to Mavericks?

If you have an external drive with an OS X Time Machine backup, then do restore of your last backup. If you have an external drive  with a bootable clone of your previous system, you can boot to that clone and re-clone the OS X on your external drive back to your Mac's internal drive.
If you do not have either of these available, then the reverting/restoring process becomes much more complicated and involves purchasing an external drive and backing up your current system to that drive, then erasing, reformatting your hard drive and now your only options to installng an OS X version is doing a clean install of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, then upgrading, again, to either OS X 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion. OS X 10.9 Mavericks is no longer available for download and Apple has not made OS X 10.9 Mavericks available in any other form to be able to redownload and install.
Maybe it would be better to explain in detail your issues with Yosemite to see if any of us here can help you with your difficulties.

    Thanks from Zurich,

So does that mean Apple has simply abandoned a proprietary paid for iOS app?
That has happened before - remember iWeb?
But this time Apple has provided a migration to the successor app, Photos.
For iPhoto and Aperture on the Mac is not much known (Aperture is Dead. Long Live Photos! | ApertureExpert), only, that there will be a "Photos" for MacOS X.
anyone with Yosemite Beta in the loop?

  • Problems after updating from Mavericks to Yosemite.

Hello everyone.I have noticed some battery problems after updating from Mavericks to Yosemite like no charging at all (but the orange led was on )and not able to fully charged.I solve them with SMC reset and PRAM reset.Furthermore, battery discharges faster than before and its really annoying. Now I have notice that the upper right corner of my mac is getting hot.I'll appreciate any help
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

  • Wifi issues after upgrading from Maverick to Yosemite. No solutions have worked.

I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 from Mavericks. Having wifi issue where I can't connect to my home network. It connects for 5 seconds than I get "no IP address", and then the connection drops. A free local wifi connection does work. Any ideas until this issue is fixed by Apple? My home router worked fine in Maverick. I tried all the online suggestions but nothing has worked. Have not downgraded yet to Maverick but thinking about it.

  • Just upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite and now only one of my two iPhoto libraries seems to be available.  Please help.

I have just updated my iMac from Mavericks 10.9.5 to Yosemite 10.10.3.
I had two different libraries in iPhoto due to the amount of photos stored.  In iPhoto I was able to click on File
and could select to Switch between either of the libraries.
Now in Photos on Yosemite it initially asked me which library and now that is the only library available to me.
When I go into my Pictures folder in the Finder it does not show my other Library.
I had about 60,000 photos stored in that library and now I can no longer find or access.
    Please help.  Thanks so much.

  • Hello Apple! I see that you have made really good stuff in the new OS X Yosemite version. But you have changed the Texture. Why??? I dont now. Please do a texture-change-program to change the textures. The textures from Mavericks and Yosemite!

OS X Yosemite is pretty good, but the texture is not good! Please do a texture-change-program. What this is? Its a option in the system settings. What this makes? Its changing the texture. Which texture? From OS X Yosemite and Mavericks. Please change the Mavericks texture! So, that everybody like it! That it looks like the best texture on the world! If you make this, I would be really happy!

  • How to transfer Messages history from Mavericks to Yosemite clean install

I would like to do a clean install of Yosemite on my MacBook, but retain all of my Messages history and attachments from my current Mavericks install. Is this possible? What files do I need to copy from the Mavericks install (before I wipe the HD) and where do I need to put them after I install Yosemite (cleanly)? Anything else I need to do after copying them?
    Thanks!

I managed to finally get mine to work, but not after a bit of trouble and losing new messages since my time machine back up (about a days worth since my backup replaced my current. I backed up and upgraded last night, and I figured out how to restore messages this morning, so anything in between that I got on my phone was lost. no big deal).
Much of the below is from other discussions, so I don't want to take credit for it, but wanted to make it easy for you, and there was one small change.
First make sure you can see hidden files by opening terminal and inputting: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
    QUIT YOUR MESSAGES APP
Replace the following files from your backup to your current clean install. Pretty much all the files should be in the same spot, except for one folder that I'll explain further below.
    Same File path
/users/<name>/Library/Messages-------> /users/<name>/Library/Messages/ this folder should include 4 files:
    chat.db
    chat.db-shm
    chat.db-wal
    the folder "Attachments"
/users/<name>/Library/Preferences----> /users/<name>/Library/Preferencescopy any file that includes iChat or Messages in the .plist
Different File pathI am not sure if this matters, but it's something I noticed when I got a message in my clean install before trying to restore my history. In Yosemite, I noticed that that "Attachments" and "Archive" folder are both in /users/<name>/Library/Messages, whereas  in Mavericks, the "Attachments" folder is in that file path, but the "Archive" folder is located in /users/<name>Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/iMessages/Archive, and within this same folder there is a shortcut to the Attachments folder. (I'm not sure if this matters, but this worked for me). I hope I didn't confuse you there!
    /users/<name>/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages/Archive-------> /users/<name>/Library/Messages/
    Restart your computer
Open Messages and it will rebuild your database.
    Ta da!
