Copy iTunes 9 Smart Playlist to External USB Drive

Is is possible to copy iTunes 9 Smart Playlist to an external USB drive without burning CDs/DVDs? I have about 1TB of iTunes Purchased content that I have in a Smart Playlist (Kind=Purchased, Kind=Protected) that I would like to backup to another external USB drive. Apologies if I have missed a posting of how to do this, I did search. Thanks if you have a solution.

Bump...any takers?

  • I have a first generation apple tv synced to a itunes library on an external USB drive. Movies and Music Won't Play

Here's my setup. First Generation Apple TV. G4 Powermac running OS X 10.5.8 iTunes 10 with the Library stored on an External 3 Terabyte USB 2 drive. It's plugged into a PCI USB 2 card. Everything worked fine till I transferred my iTunes library to the external USB drive. Things seem to sync up fine. I have it set to copy TV shows to the Apple TV's internal drive and that seems to work but when I try to play music or movies that are streaming from the library, I get an error. With movies I get the "The selected video cannot be played. The format was not recognized." error. The movie and music list seems up to date but now it won't play. Did I waste my money on this external drive? How do I get this setup to work?

I don't think this will be a complete answer to your question, but may point you in the right direction.
I have a similar setup (same OS X and iTunes versions), but my library is on a network attached 2TB harddrive (vs a USB 2 drive). Mine works fine, both syncing (which you don't have a problem with) and streaming. It's possible that iTunes doesn't like the USB 2 drive, but I don't know. Are you able to watch TV shows on your PowerMac after having moved the files to the USB drive? If you can watch content on your laptop but not on your AppleTV, it suggests the Apple TV doesn't like the USB drive.
Perhaps you didn't transfer iTunes library content correctly. (Forgive me if I'm telling you things you already know.) The iTunes library consists of a list of content and it's location (local harddrive, network drive, etc.). If you simply moved the files, but didn't actually update the library with the new locations, this can explain why you can't stream the content. The Apple TV displays what is in the library, but cannot play it if the library entry is pointing to the wrong location. Note: This "library update" I'm referring to is not the same as simply changing the iTunes media folder location in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced.
When I moved my content to an external drive, I had to delete everything in my iTunes Library, then re-import everything (File > Add to library). Don't let the phrase "delete everything in my iTunes library" freak you out. Deleting entries in the library is not the same as deleting the files (which you definitely do NOT want to do).
If you select an item in your iTunes library and press the Delete button, it asks for confirmation thus:
Are you sure you want to delete the selected TV show from your iTunes library?
It's OK to answer "Delete TV Show". It will then ask you if you want to delete the file. Do NOT delete the file. You can select your entire library and delete everything at once, just make sure you do NOT delete the files when it asks. When that is done, make sure the iTunes Media Folder Location is set to where you want and that the files are there. Then, go to File, Add to Library and re-import everything. It will take several minutes to more than an hour, depending on the speed of your computer and the size of your library.
I have had to do this everytime I've moved my library to different storage devices. If there is a simpler way, I am not aware of it.
    I hope this helps.

My win8 pc hard drive failed.  After the hard drive was replaced, I copied iTunes Media backupfiles from external hard drive (Karen's Replicator backup software was used).  ITunes does not recognize these back up files even though the location is the same as cloud & recently burned music that does show- help!  The backup files consist of 34,000+ songs; almost all burned from my own CD collection.  I do have most of the songs on an ipod classic but hesitate to try to restore from that.  Can someone tell me how to get these 34,000 songs to show up in iTunes?  Thanks!!

This diagram shows how a typical iTunes library ought to be set out (click on it to enlarge)
The red outline highlights the media folder and its contents, the various subfolders are only created if that kind of content is in your library. The right-hand side shows the files that should be found in the iTunes library folder; sentinel is normally hidden so may not be visible. The core of your iTunes library is the file iTunes Library.itl, you need to restore this, the other library files and the Album Artwork folder, as well as the media folder, to restore your library.

  • Transferring iTunes library & playlist to external hard drive.

Hi, I'm a big music person with major OCD about my iTunes collection and playlists. Over the years I've started to use up a lot of space on my internal Mac hard drive. I currently have about 90GB of music on iTunes and want to move it all over to an external hard drive. I want to move it, but ensure I don't lose my playlists when I'm doing it. I've had a nose on the Apple support bit and a few other discussions on here and Google but can't find an answer that tells me exactly how to do it. Can anyone help?
    Thanks. :-)

do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in

Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the whole iTunes folder and all its subfolders and files intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.  The URL provided by AnaMusic outlines this process but omits the final stage of starting iTunes with the option key held down so you actually start using the iTunes files on the external drive.

  • Problems copying iTunes folder to an external hard drive - "The operation can't be completed because the item FILE NAME is in use"

    Hi,
I have been trying to back up my iTunes folder from my MacBook hard drive over to a new LaCie external hard drive.  However, whenever I try to do it at some point during the copying I keep getting the warning "The operation can’t be completed because the item FILE NAME is in use".  Each time I have tried it, it is always a different file name that comes up and at different points of the copying.  Following the warning, the copying stops and cannot be restarted.
I tried copying the iTunes folder to another Lacie external hard drive that I have, and it worked fine so I am guessing that it maybe something wrong with the hard drive.
I've been trying various approaches all day and can't seem to get anywhere with it - all very frustrating, so any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks.

If you don't have other backup data on it, reformatting external drive could solve the problem.

  • What is the best way to backup a 1 Terabyte external USB drive?

In order to keep my MacBook Air running speedily along and to free up space, I use this strategy to store my iTunes Library on an external USB drive.
I'm trying to think of the best way to backup a 1 Terabyte external USB drive. I'm told the hardware has a product life of about five years and some say to burn DVD-R discs of it as a backup, but that would require many discs.
Has anyone explored the viability of using FTP in conjunction with AWS (Amazon Web Services) to backup the iTunes Library to the cloud? Their file storage is quite cheap.
Any thoughts on the most effective way to backup an external USB drive?
    Thanks!

For a simple clone use Disk Utility's Restore option:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Others will suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!.

  • Suddenly can't share external USB drive

I have all of my iTunes music on an external USB drive called 'iTunes_Drive', attached to my G5 iMac in the basement. For a long time, my wife would just run iTunes on the G4 iMac in the living room and play music through the Shared Libraries feature. However, this is slow to start up each day, so I came up with the idea of just sharing the external drive, and having her maintain her own library based on the music in the shared drive.
Just today, it became impossible to access this shared drive from the G4. Interestingly, when I shared a FireWire external drive with the same settings, then that drive WAS visible as an available shared folder when connecting from the G4.
Rebooting both computers hasn't changed anything. The firewall on the G5 is turned off, and it's allowing AFP, SMB and FTP sharing of the drive. The G4 CAN mount the iTunes_Drive using SMB, but iTunes doesn't recognize it as the same drive (possibly because under SMB it's called "ITUNES_DRIVE:" whereas in AFP it's "iTunes_Drive").
Is there something new in security which is preventing AFP sharing of external USB drives? Neither googling nor searching through this forum has turned up anything that helps me.
I should note that the G5 is running Leopard 10.5.1, and the G4 is running Tiger 10.4.11, and I just ran Software Update on both computers last night, with the attendant reboots this morning.

I've experienced a similar problem with my two external hard drives connected to my AirPort Extreme Base. Since installing yesterday's security update, I can no longer see either hard drive. From my Shared folder in Finder, it's now constantly in 'Connecting' mode. I've tried rebooting and checking everything to no avail.
Any help out there would be appreciated.

  • Can copy an Itunes playlist to an USB drive

How do I copy an Itunes playlist to an USB drive?

If you just want the collection of tracks you can drag & drop the tracks from iTunes to an open folder in Windows Explorer.
Do you need the tracks to play in their playlist order? If so you can save the playlist as an M3U file in addition to copying over the files, then use my script LocaliseM3U to make the playlist "portable". Drag & drop the M3U file onto the script and it will convert the absolute file paths to relative ones that should work from the memory stick.

  • I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library.  When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found".  need help

I recently reset my computer and copy my music from an external hard drive to my itunes library.  When I click on a song to play i get an error message that says " the song could not be used because the original file could not be found".  But when I have my external hard drive plug in the song will play with no problem.  What do I need to do to play my music without having the external harddrive plug in ????????  Please help

Because the location for each song in your library is on your hard drive.  If the hard drive isn't there, how can iTunes play it?
You'll have to move/copy the music from your hard drive to your computer's hard drive.
Basically, EASIEST way to do all this, if you don't care about your play counts, etc...
-Delete EVERYTHING from iTunes, so that your library is now empty.
-Go to "Advanced" inside of the "Preferences" window, found in the "Edit" drop-down.  You can also access Preferences by pressing Ctrl+, (Press Ctrl and the comma key)
-Change your iTunes Media Folder Location to something simple, but on your computer. I use C:/iTunes.  Make sure "Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized" and "Copy files to...." are both checked.  You can close Preferences now.
-Now, drag and drop your music from your hard drive into your iTunes library.  iTunes will automatically add the music to your library, as you would expect, and also creates a copy of each file to place into that iTunes Media Folder you just created.
    Shouldn't have any more problems...

  • How do I copy my iTunes library to an external hard drive?

I´d like to copy (note: copy NOT export) my iTunes library to an external hard drive but I just can´t figure out how! It says that the external hard drive can not be changed, therefor I can not drag and drop the iTunes files to it. The external hard drive is called iXternal (80GB). Please help, I´m on a tight dead line!

Select the external drive on the desktop and Get Info (Command-I).
At 'Ownership & Permissions:', click on the small triangle till it points down.
Verify that 'You can Read & Write'.
You should also see a checkbox 'Ignore ownership on this volume'.
If it is not checked, check it.
    Hope this helps.

I've copied my itunes library onto an external hard drive.  Is there any way I can do this and delete songs from my PC without also deleting from the external drive? Already lost two songs!!!  I just want a back up - using a work PC and don't want others accessing my songs.  Hope someone can help.  Thanks!

I see. To get a better idea of what is being stored where please download and run the script iTunesInfo which should output something like this:
I'm interested in the block of 4 results starting ITL location. If your profile name shows up somewhere replace it with <Name>.  It is also worth checking under Edit > Preferences > Advanced to see where iTunes thinks your media is supposed to go. My script estimates the setting based on the location of the first media file it can actually find.
