    Dr. P,
Song files are just files.  You can copy them the way you copy any other files, like photos or documents.
If any of the files are not already in MP3 format, and you wish to create MP3 versions, then you can convert them using iTunes, by following this guide:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1550

  • Copy itunes files to MP3

How do you copy itunes files, playlists to MP3 player?

If you need to convert a file from one file type to mp3:
    1. Click "edit from your top menu bar and choose "Preferences"
    2. Open "Import Settings"
    3. Set "Import Using:" to "MP3 Encoder" and click okay.
    4. Click okay on the Preferences box.
    5. Now you can right click on any song that is not an MP3 and choose to "Make MP3 version"
    5. It will create a duplicate of the song in your library, but the dup will be the correct version.

I am trying to copy songs to an sd card for a digital photo frame. I changed my settings in iTunes to mp3 format before I downloaded them but it did not work. What am I doing wrong? When I play the sd card in my mac or on a lenovo laptop it works but not in the photo frame. I would be grateful for any ideas as to what I am doing wrong.

Unfortunately you've discovered too late how important it is to maintain an up-to-date backup of your iTunes library (and all other data of value).  You could, before wiping the drive, have considered making use of a commercial data recovery service that could (albeit at considerable cost) have extracted your library from the hard disk, even if virus infected.
In the absence of that option, you will need to restore the content of your library from its original sources:
Depending on your location, you may be able to re-download any iTunes Store purchases that are still available on the Store
Likewise, most digital purchases from Amazon (including auto-rip copies of purchased CDs) should be available from the Amazon Cloud and via the Amazon Music application - the same may be true of other commercial sources for digital downloads
Content imported from your CDs will have to imported again
The specific situation that you describe regarding the music imported from your friend's external HDD suggests that either the source is badly organized and/or originates from a source other than iTunes (other media players may use alternative tags for information like artist, title, album, etc. that are not wholly consistent with how iTunes handle these).  Without details of the issues you're seeing it is difficult to suggest a remedy other than going through the media album-by-album, track-by-track, and correcting the inconsistencies.
In the absence of a backup or access to the original library data there is no option other than painstakingly recreating your library as described above.  As you do so, you'll now realize how important creating and maintaining backups are - in my case I have at all times three separate duplicates of my library, in two different locations, where none is ever more than a week old compared to the content of my master library.

  • I have converted/copied my itunes oto mp3 format to play on my PC. unfortunatly I didi not specify a different folder fro the mp3's. I therefore have itunes side by side with my mp3's all in the same folder. How can I remove the mp3's into another folder.

I have converted my itunes on my imac to mp3 format so i could play them on my pc. unfortunatly  i did not specify a seperate folder for the mp3's to be sent to once converted.
i now have itunes and mp3's side by side in the itunes media folder. this has the effect of doubling my library.
how can i get rid of the mp3's from this folder en mass, other than erasing them one by one, there are 7000!!!

Click on 'Music' in the iTunes sidebar. Look to see whether you have a 'Kind' column:
If you haven't, choose 'View Options' from the 'View' menu and check 'Kind':
Now go to the Music list again and click on the label of the 'Kind' column. This will group all your AACs and MP3s together. Locate the MP3s: click on the top one. Hold the shift key and click on the bottom one to select them all. If you want to save them drag them to a folder on your Desktop. Then hit 'Delete'. IMPORTANT: when promted, choose to have them moved to the Trash, otherwise they will be removed from the list but kept in the actual library.

  • ITunes and mp3's?

so i've had my macbook for a little over a year and i was wondering.
when i import music to itunes, like i download mp3's and drag them from my desktop to a play list, can i delete the file on my desktop?
just curious cause i remember on windows i needed to keep all the mp3 files or else i'd get a little icon next to each file that i deleted.
    thanks in advance C:

It depends on how you have iTunes preferences set up. If you have "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder when adding to library" selected (this is under iTunes > Preferences, Advanced tab) then you could delete the file from your desktop.
You may want to verify that the files are being copied to the media folder by Ctrl-clicking (inside of iTunes) an mp3 file that you just dragged into iTunes and select "Show in Finder." This will show you the location of the file on your disk. If the file is in the iTunes Media folder, you could delete the copy from the desktop.

  • HT1391 I have a thousands of duplicated songs from my itunes because my little cousin wanted to convert all the songs in my itunes to mp3 for his mp3 player.  How do I move all of the mp3 files into the trash while leaving the originals from my Itunes?

My little cousin coverted all my music in Itunes to MP3.  Now I have duplicates of everything.  How do I erase ONLY the duplictaed MP3.  Leaving my original original songs in Itunes available?
    Thanks!

If they are in the iPad's Music app then the only way to get them out of it is by connecting the iPad to a computer. As they aren't iTunes purchases you won't be able to copy them back to a computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases, instead you will need a third-party program on the computer to copy them off - there are some listed half-way down this page which should work: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • Copy iTunes from win 7 pro to new Mac Pro?

Have all my work on my iPhone 5s. Do nothing but manually syncing on lates iTunes. What to copy iTunes to new Mac Pro so I can use my iPhone on either computer.
Laptop at work and desktop at home.
All store bought music on C drive in iTunes as it should be along with books etc. but about 8 gbs of my ripped music some mp3 some ACC all at 320 is on my internal drive.
First thought is change iTunes setting to CONSOLIDATE hoping D drive music will go into iTunes properly.
While I searched KB I came up flat. I like a clean organized computer. While I know windows vert well I am new to Mac pros (but not iPhones nor iOS 7)..
Any way I can do this cleanly. I can put a full backup of iTunes onto a USB hard drive I use for 3rd back up off pictures and iTunes
    Thank you

does anyone know how this can be done please?

How can I copy ITunes music to Photoshop Elements11 slideshow?

    Plumgirl,
Use the PowerPoint command Insert > Audio > Audio from file, and navigate to where the audio file is located.
If you don't know where the file is located, right-click the track in iTunes and choose Show in Windows Explorer.
Make sure the song you want to use is in MP3 format.  If it is in something else, make an MP3 version, per this document:

Merry Xmas CF McBlob and thank you. I had thought about that but I want a cleaner easier way of doing it as I start to setup my MacBook Pro I have run into a few things and don't like the D drive idea. I did format a 1 TB drive last nite giving 700gb to Time Capsule and 300gb to data. Used Guid format than journaled for TC and fat for data with disk utility.
There has to be a way I can mirror libraries on computers for iPhone 5s. Heck I see icloud took care of contacts, etc. and iTunes saw all my bought music in cloud and downloaded it to macbook. I consolidated my original library so now all us together. There must be way to copy iTunes from windows and use it to replace folders on Maverick latest so my iPhone 5s is seen the same on windows 7 Pugent system and apple MacBook Pro. I called Apple but got a genius on the phone that had to keep asking for help herself and referencing the KBarticle that gives a few options none of which are clean.
    Thank you

    Thank you

So it seems from reading the COMMAND manual that my first issue is that I used a 16GB SD card, and the manual says it will only recogize up to a 2GB SD card. I did use my MB Air's SD card slot and crated a folder and dragged the music files to it, then to the card. So I am going to get a 2GB card and try that next. Otherwise just stick with the iPOD connected. At least that is 8GB

  • I can't copy iTunes media files from one external hard drive to another.

Hi, I am running the latest iTunes and Mavericks software on my MacBook Pro. My iTunes library is stored on an external Seagate 2tb hard drive and it is almost full. I want to transfer the files to a WD Elements 3tb external hard drive and have made that new volume the destination folder for my iTunes library. However, even though I have enabled read/write on both volumes and made the iTunes media folders on both shared folders, I can't copy all the files from the Seagate drive to the WD drive. It comes up with an error message that says "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8058)". I can transfer files from my MacBook hard drive to the new volume, but can't copy files from the old Seagate volume to my MacBook hard drive; it makes the "boing" sound that indicates it is copying but nothing transfers. Files that won't copy include all music files, some video files and all podcast files. Some transferred with no problem. Any ideas out there?

Hi Limnos, thanks very much for your reply.
both external drives came preformatted for Windows but I erased each and reformatted them for Mac before using them.
i made the destination folder on the new WD drive the new iTunes folder using Advanced preferences in iTunes.
my original iTunes folder on the first drive contained all my iTunes files, as that, also, was the destination folder that was linked via Advanced preferences.
If I download new content now with the new drive attached, iTunes has no trouble finding where to place the files.
in Preferences I have both boxes checked (copy files" and "organize") that deal with copying iTunes files.
When  I first attempted to copy all iTunes files from one media folder to the other on the external drives, I just did a drag and drop of the whole iTunes media folder from one to the other while both were mounted on my desktop. It started copying immediately with no problems, but as it progressed it started skipping files, each time displaying the error message I reported earlier. that included my entire Music folder. When I open, for example, a season folder that contains files that would not copy, eg, Modern Family Season 5, the episodes that won't copy are there and visible but any attempt to drag and drop them into the correct folder on the new drive results in the error message. There is no pattern to it; it will choose some episodes from some seasons but not others, and no music at all.
when I look at the "missing" files in  iTunes they have the small exclamation mark that indicates the file is missing, but when I locate it through iTunes it doesn't copy the file on the old external drive to the new one. It just plays it having found the file on the old drive.
originally I had to make the iTunes folder on the old drive into a shared folder using the Get info window after either a software upgrade or an OS upgrade (I can't remember which, it was several years ago). For some reason the upgrade changed the preferences of that folder to a Read Only folder and after researching the problem found the only way to keep using the drive was to make the folder a shared one. I can't remember why and I apologise for that but it was a long time ago.; I can tell you that at the time it was necessary.
thanks again for your time; I have a good working knowledge of iTunes and Macs in general so I truly believe I have done everything according to how it should be done,, but clearly I've done something wrong!

My win8 pc hard drive failed.  After the hard drive was replaced, I copied iTunes Media backupfiles from external hard drive (Karen's Replicator backup software was used).  ITunes does not recognize these back up files even though the location is the same as cloud & recently burned music that does show- help!  The backup files consist of 34,000+ songs; almost all burned from my own CD collection.  I do have most of the songs on an ipod classic but hesitate to try to restore from that.  Can someone tell me how to get these 34,000 songs to show up in iTunes?  Thanks!!

This diagram shows how a typical iTunes library ought to be set out (click on it to enlarge)
The red outline highlights the media folder and its contents, the various subfolders are only created if that kind of content is in your library. The right-hand side shows the files that should be found in the iTunes library folder; sentinel is normally hidden so may not be visible. The core of your iTunes library is the file iTunes Library.itl, you need to restore this, the other library files and the Album Artwork folder, as well as the media folder, to restore your library.

when attempting to copy itunes folder to external hard drive, response is unable to copy file, hard drive can't be modified. What does that mean and how to I use external HD to transfer itunes library to new PC?

The drive is probably formated as NTFS, and your Mac doesn't have an NTFS write driver installed. Why not transfer the folder over your network?
