Copy Media between Shared Libraries

I must be missing something...
I'm using Home Sharing between 2 (all updated) computers. Both AUTHORIZED and with the same iTunes account, 1 & 2 of 5 allowed. The files play just fine between the 2 computers. Both Libraries have passwords assigned and are logged in.
My problem is; The Shared Library on either computer has a LOCK displayed and will NOT allow me to drag and drop files between the 2 iTunes Libraries - WHY?
Thanks in advance!

Really, I'm the only person with this issue??

  • How to copy media from shared library from ipad

    Hello,
I have home sharing turned on and i have a local computer as a media server which stores all my media files. I can access the data from within my network on all my devices.
I am hoping there is an easy, with just using the ipad(iphone), to choose a movie from the library to take with me on a trip. It is easy to copy media from computer to computer with itunes. I was hoping there is an equally easy way from the ipad or iphone.
For example, launching the video app allows you to access shared libraries. Is there a way to copy that content to the ipad or iphone from an app?
FYI, i have all pc based computers
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

    Hi ralph,

  • Some photos copied between shared libraries lose date.

Tonight I copied some photos from my wife's shared iPhoto library on her MacBook Pro to my iPhoto library on my Mac Pro, about 400 photos, all taken since December 2008 (toddler + DSLR = lots of photos). I noticed the imported photos were sorting out of chronological order, and then I noticed that about 100 of the photos were dated 7:00:00 Dec 31, 2000. The dates in my wife's iPhoto library are all correct. I've attempted to re-copy some of the problem photos, but they keep coming through with the same bogus date.
The affected photos are from all throughout the three month period, with some taken at the same times unaffected. And I don't think my wife has edited more than a handful of these photos. As best I can tell, the problem affects the photos randomly.
    Has anyone else experienced this?

I just tried the same thing with some old photos from a friends wedding that were on my laptop's iphoto and I want them on my iMac's photo. Sharing the lib from the laptop and dragging that album from laptop's iphoto to imacs iphoto lib I lose titles, keywords, originals, and some dates get scrambled.

  • What's the best way to share media between iTunes libraries?

I just got my wife her own MacBook, and we definitely want to share media. I know she can set up her own itunes account and we can HomeShare but I am not sure if this is better for some reason than just logging her in with my itunes account. Is it better to separate the mac accounts like this? Put another way, will the macs get 'confused' by having 2 computers driving the same itunes?

    Hi,
If you share your media, it is probably best to have just the one Apple ID. If you are using home sharing, you use the same Apple ID. You can use more than one computer with the same Apple ID.

  • Drag and drop no longer between shared libraries after updating to itunes 10.5.

Used to be able to open up and drag and drop from one computer to another using home sharing. No longer works. Any ideas?

same here except i have windows vista and its my new iphone 4s.  it freezes on the backing up phase.

  • I can't access my Home Sharing libraries

I have tried so many times to find the shared libraries, and looked at all the advice so far. I have a windows, with the newest iTunes, 10.5, and am trying to connect my new mac to it, same iTunes 10.5. The boxes are ticked, the network is fine, there is no blocking firewall, both computers are authorised. I have also re-installed and re-started my computers numerous times. My old windows computer has connected to other computers before. After I sign in to home sharing and click done, it disappears. Where you go to tick the boxes, under preferences/sharing, it says "On, no users connected". its the same on both machines but they are on the same account. How come? and how can I get to share my libraries across computers? If i cant then i bought this very expensive new laptop for nothing.

Let me explain the two different ways of sharing media libraries in iTunes and hopefully that may shed some light on how things work for you and others and lead to a solution to your problem. This will also allow me to correct something in my previous post.
I use Home Sharing exclusively and don't always remember about Library Sharing but iTunes also has another sharing feature called Library Sharing that is a little different and slightly more restrictive.
Home Sharing is enabled by selecting Home Sharing from the 'Advanced' menu (see screen shot below) and entering your Apple ID and password. Home Sharing allows unrestricted access to the shared iTunes library from computers on the network as well as from iOS devices. Home Sharing is required for access by iOS devices, they do not work with Library Sharing. Home sharing also allows you to copy media from one computer to another, something you can't do with Library Sharing. Home Sharing overrides Library Sharing if both are enabled.
Library Sharing is enable by selecting 'Share my library on my local network' in iTunes Preference (see screen shot below.) Library Sharing does not work with iOS devices. Library Sharing only allows for the playback of media from shared libraries. You cannot copy media from one computer to another using Library Sharing. The 'Status:' indicator will display a count of the number of computers that are connected to your library using Library Sharing. Home Sharing connections will not be indicated here. You can also restrict who can connect to your library using a password. This password restriction has no affect on Home Sharing connections. They are authorized and controlled by the use of Apple IDs.
How to tell if you are connecting to a library shared by Home Sharing or Library Sharing (see screen shot below.) A Home Sharing library icon looks like a house with a musical note on the side. A Library Sharing icon looks like a stack of CDs with a musical note on top. They are both labeled by the name of the shared library as configured in iTunes Preferences.
I think I've covered everything and hope this helps people understand the difference between the two types of shared libraries and how to configure each.

  • Can't copy songs between home shared libraries

I used to have home sharing set up to automatically copy songs between my wife's iMac and my Mac Pro. About a month ago, I changed the boot drive in my Mac Pro to an SSD. Sometime after, I also de-authorized all of my computers from iTunes (I had some dead computers that I wanted to clear out and re-authorized the two computers we are currently using). I just noticed today that songs we each buy are no longer synched between our computers, and I suspect either the iTunes deauthorization or the moving of files between computers must be the reason.
The shared libraries still work, and I can play songs from my wife's library and vice-versa, but we can't even manually copy songs. The "Settings" and "Import" options on the bottom are missing, the option to show songs missing from my library is also missing, and where I used to be able to drag songs from one library to another, this no longer works.
Both of our computers are on the same network and we are both logged into the same account. I read other posts that suggested turning off home sharing on both computers. I did this, rebooted both computers, and then turned sharing back on. Still no importing. I also tried logging out of iTunes and logging back in again, but still no dice.
Apple products are so nicely designed, but when they break, they often leave no clues as to what is going wrong, and it can be infuriating trying to figure out why!
Does anyone have any idea what is wrong?
    Help is much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Ron

Okay ... I just solved my own problem. I read about turning on / off home sharing, but I didn't realize that there are two similar sounding options for doing this. I went to "Preferences --> Sharing" and chose to turn on / off sharing of my library. This did nothing.
However, I later noticed that in the Menu Bar under "Advanced", there is also a way to turn on / off home sharing. I turned this on / off, and my files are now sharing again. Yay!!!

  • How do you copy songs between two shared libraries?

I have a mac book, hubby has a pc. We have set up home sharing and can see and listen to each others songs. However he has spent the time taking adding music from our CD's to his library. I would like to copy songs from his library and place them in mine but am having no luck. I have tried looking for answers on the forums but have not been successful finding any answers. I have tried copy paste and import. I am sure I am doing something wrong but have no idea what it is. Can someone out there please help?

iTunes has two kinds of sharing!
*Regular sharing* allows viewing and listening, but not copying.
*Home sharing* is the one you want; it allows copying as well. Here is the link to the support article for Home Sharing: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819

  • Can't copy clips between libraries

I have a library of Shared clips. I try to copy a clip to another library and I get the Missing File indicator in the target library. Why?

    Dear Goldwing TX,
Happy New Year, and welcome to the Support Communities!
I’m assuming you have updated your events and projects to the new library structure in FCPX 10.1.  The documents below will provide detailed information on how to manage the data in this structure.
Final Cut Pro X 10.1: Updating and working with libraries FAQ
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5958
Where does my media go after I update?
Media that you stored inside your original event is stored inside your new library. Media that was linked to an external folder and not copied inside your original event stays in that external folder and is linked to your new library.
Is media duplicated as part of the update process?
No. During the update process, Final Cut Pro creates links between the new Final Cut Pro 10.1 library and the media files in your old projects and events.  If you delete your old project and event files, the media files remain in the new Final Cut Pro 10.1 library.  If you delete the new Final Cut Pro 10.1 library, the media files remain in your old projects and events.  By using these links, Final Cut Pro does not have to copy media files or use additional disk space.
Managing Media with Final Cut Pro X Libraries
    http://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Media_Management.pdf
Page 4 and Page 9 discuss Managed vs. External Media.  Page 13 discusses the Consolidate command.
Managed or external media: Any source media (camera files, audio files, stills, or other movies) may reside either within the library file (as managed media) or outside the library file in a folder located anywhere on a hard disk or network. A managed library provides a convenient way to copy or move all of the media files associated with a single production.* External media, on the other hand, makes sharing media with multiple users easier. For example, you can store external media on shared storage
such as a storage area network (SAN).
If you want to share access to managed media, you can convert it to external media at any time using the Consolidate command. You can also use the Consolidate command to collect external media as managed media inside the library for easy transport or archiving.
For comprehensive documentation on Final Cut Pro X 10.1, including instructions for organizing your libraries and media, see Final Cut Pro X Help at https://help.apple.com/finalcutpro.

  • How do I copy purchases between 2 itunes libraries on the same computer with different log ins and separate apple user ids?

How do I copy purchases between 2 itunes libraries on the same computer with different log ins and separate apple user ids?

Load the library which doesn't contain the songs and drag them into the open iTunes application window. If you need to move them between different computer user accounts, put them into /Users/Shared/.

  • Help - Sharing media between different accounts on single iMac not working

So, we have an iMac with 2 user accounts.  We wanted to simply share the media between accounts and I read these instructions from Apple Support which are very straightforward and easy enough to follow.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
Basically, the article states you move the "iTunes Media" folder into the Public or other Shared file location and then you point each user account's copy of iTunes to that specific location for the iTunes media folder in preferences/advanced menu.
All of that was very simple and worked great, but the only problem is on the 2nd user account when I re-open iTunes, none of that media is there.  I checked again inside the 2nd user iTunes preferences/advanced and it is definitely pointing to the right place.  Per the specific instructions in the article, I tried both ~/Public as well as the Users/Shared too - both times I can see it fine from the main account but nothing from the 2nd user account.
Does anyone have any suggestions??  Thanks!

    Adam,
iPhoto was not designed to be a multi-user application. While you can let other accounts view your photo collection by sharing, it gets messy when more than one owner has add and delete capabilities.
Having said that, you could probably do a similar thing with the iPhoto Library folder as what you've described with iTunes. Refer to the iPhoto Help topic "Moving the iPhoto Library to a new location".

  • [Solved] sharing media between two distros automatically

I installed Arch and openSUSE with a shared home partition. I want to automatically share media between unprivileged users in both distros. So, in the home partition I have a media directory with its sub-directories symlinked into the user directories in home. I intend to set the following command to run at shutdown:
    find /home/media -user happyuser -exec chmod --reference=/home/media {} \;
    maybe with
    -exec chown --from=happyuser --reference=/home/media {} \;
    appended to that if possible.
At present this sets the permissions to 777. Is there a better way to do this?
Last edited by stozi (2013-09-24 13:58:55)

If you want to share data only between one user on opensuse and one on arch, make sure both have the same uid and that's it.
If you want to share the files between all users, then put all users in the same group and set this group, the sticky bit and setgid bit on your /.../media directory (then all files get the group of /.../media by default)
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setgid#set … irectories
If you want to enforce certain permissions so that all files under media must be at least readable for all users, try a daemon that sets persmissions and gid like experms (AUR) or autochown (AUR). Then no user can forbid access to some files.

  • Shared libraries?

Is there an option or a solution within Photos to do shared libraries, multiple libraries on one computer and between multiple computers?  I am reading and initially it looks like there is less flexibility for this then there was in iPhoto/Aperature.  And the AD line of "For the first time, iCloud Photo Library gives you access to your entire Mac photo and video library from all your devices" doesn't work, when one iPhoto/Aperature library is 250GB, several others are 25-50GB each, looking at an aggregate over 500GB of media.  Not expecting this to be a DAM, but initially it looks like options are less.  Very hesitant about converting libraries at this point, and I have been running Photos Beta for several months now.
    Advice?

    Thanks.
I figured as much, I was hoping that they would have built some functionality into this for home/small business shared libraries.  With so many homes let alone small businesses that have shared networks that rely on sharing resources, it would seem obvious to build that function, but I guess there are other objectives.
We have been running iPhoto then Aperature for so long and it is integrated into all computers and devices.  Saying that we are not looking for a DAM is because we have managed to make a framework of networked libraries that does what we need, plus it is more hassle to switch to a DAM (plus I can't find one at a price we are willing to pay).
Just going to have to bite the bullet and switch to a DAM sometime soon.

  • ITunes on new Mac Mini does not show shared libraries on network or songs on NAS drive

iTunes on new Mac Mini does not show shared libraries on network or songs on NAS drive
The latest version of iTunes on a 3-month old Mac Mini (8 gig RAM, OS 10.10.2) does not see any of the shared iTunes libraries on a  MacBookPro (MBP) (OS 10.9.5) and a 14-month old Mac Mini (OS 10.9.5). And a network shared drive/media server does not appear as well. I have a Gigabite Ethernet G4 and on it, the MPB and the "old" mini I can see the various shared music libraries and NAS, but not on the new Mini.
The little house with a music note inside it that I see on the upper left corner of the iTunes 12.1 window on my MBP does not appear on iTunes 12.1 on the new Mac Mini. I have gone through all the iTunes preferences and can not find where I can turn on this feature. The new Mac Mini is on the local network and I can reach the internet successfully.
I have been using iTunes since its beginning (still have a PowerTower Pro with a working copy of SoundJam), so I am not a newbie, but this has me baffled.

May I add, that I gave full rights to the user at the Mac Mini to access and change data on the server drive for ITunes Media.

  • Pmap and shared libraries

I'm trying to subtract the "shared" mappings from the output that pmap
produces and show memory usage per process and a separate shared
    memory usage for the system.
Pmap shows shared library mappings like this ...
Address Kbytes Resident Shared Private Permissions Mapped File
    FF080000 656 616 600 16 read/exec libc.so.1
    FF132000 32 32 - 32 read/write/exec libc.so.1
It looks like all processes that have access to libc.so have
the same mapping. It was my understanding that the Shared and Private allocations (at least in the read/exec mapping) were a fixed
characteristic of the particular shared library.
Where is the 40 Kbytes that are not currently used? Virtual, swapped
out?, but would it be Shared or Private?

No, not all processes mapping a shared library have the same
    shared/private .text section allocations.
The shared libraries are tuned for maximum sharing, that is they
are compiled as position independant code so most of the .text
section (program code) can be mapped without changes into each
process, at whatever virtual address is appropriate for each
process. All the code that needs to be adapted for a certain
virtual address is concentrated at one place in the .text section
(procedure linkage table, global offset table, ...). This part
of the shared library cannot be shared between processes and is
typically what you see as the "private" part of the .text section
in the pmap -x output. The non sharable .text section part is
just the procedure linkage table, global offset table, ... and
thus is ~ the same size for each process.
By using mprotect on the .text section or by setting breakpoints
into the .text section (to name two exceptions) you are able to
make changes to more parts of the shared .text sections, so that
you get more 'private' pages in a processes' address space. Here's
    an example with breakpoints:
    <pre>
    4% adb /bin/cat
    main:b
    :r
    breakpoint at:
    main: save %sp, -0x190, %sp
    printf:b
    memmove:b
    atoi:b
    malloc:b
    getenv:b
    :c
    breakpoint at:
    getenv: save %sp, -0x60, %sp
    </pre>
Now in another window you can verify with pmap -x that cat's copy of
libc.so with several breakpoints (=changes, private copies) in the
.text section has more private memory allocated:
    <pre>
    FF280000 656 616 568 48 read/exec libc.so.1
    </pre>
While some other processes' copy of libc.so at the same time has:
    <pre>
    FF180000 656 616 592 24 read/exec libc.so.1
    </pre>
The 40Kbytes difference you've observed between the .text sections'
size and the resident size are VM pages not loaded in main memory.
If these VM pages have not been changed, then they can be paged in
from the shared lib's file, else there have been changes to these
pages and they resides on the swap space.
