I backed up my ipod, but when I restore the backup "only gets me the pictures and I lose libraries and playlists." Why?

Because the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.
If you restore from iCloud backup only your iTunes purchases will be restored
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes

Yes, the file extension is M4R. Does it matter where I save these files on my Macbook? I then opened them in Itunes and played them. I did find the Tones folder in Itunes but the Tones or Ringtones tab does not show up when I select Iphone (within Itunes). When I open the Tones folder in the Library, it is empty. It has about one year I have been rating my songs and creating my play lists. I keep all my musics on a external drive. Always when I plug the drive I can play the musics list on the library with out a problem.
Now on this new update (8.0), when I click on the music, simply the Itunes don't find the music. And when I add to the library a music that was already there, it comes with NO RATING!
Results:
1) lost my ratings
2) lost my play lists...I will have to build all again.
Can some one Help Me?

Hi, usually iTunes stores data in 2 different folders:
one it's used to store your music files, the other stores your settings (playlists, ratings...). The first one can be stored wherever you want, the other, which contains the xml file with all your settings, is usually stored in My Documents / Music / iTunes Music. If you don't back up it or you replace it (for example doing a clean install of iTunes), you could lost all your informations. I suggest you to recover your PC from a backup (if available) or use a program to recover deleted files. Let me know if you need more help, goodbye

How to undo Safari copying bookmarks, history, favorites, and reading list from Macbook Pro to iMac after Yosemite update?

I just updated my iMac 27inch Mid 2011 to Yosemite 10.10.2. I have a Macbook Pro that I primarily use for everyday stuff. I upgraded to Yosemite a while ago on my macbook. Now that I upgraded my iMac, it transferred everything saved in Safari on my macbook pro to my iMac. My favorites, history, bookmarks, and reading list were copied over. This is driving me nuts! I had a separate set of data saved on the iMac because I use it for different purposes. All of the original bookmarks, favorites, history, etc. on my iMac are now gone. I logged out of iCloud (which was a feature I did not enjoy when upgrading to Yosemite) yet all of the safari data from my laptop is still cloned onto my iMac. Please tell me there is a way to undo this or refresh safari pre-Yosemite update!

Then there's no way to recover the lost data. You will lose every bit of data you have if you don't start backing up.

iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.

Hi, I've just purchased my daughter an iPod Touch, I've registed the iPod on my iTunes account, but now it has all the same play lists that I have on my iPhone - some of the music isn't suitable but I can't delete any of it. Does anybody know how I could delete the playlists - I don't think songs with the f bomb are suitable for 7 year olds!!! Help PLEASE....

You can eventurally set a different Sync scheme for your daughtere's ipod Touch device when it connects to your itunes.
Make sure you click on "Selected playlists" and then choose which playlists you want synced to your daughter's iPod. The rest will be deleted off her device with the next iTunes sync:

Itunes regularly "forgets" my libraries and play counts

In the last month i am experiencing the following problem. Every now and then, when i open itunes, my playlists are gone, and the play count of the songs is changed (a few songs have play count 1 and the rest 0). Moreover, itunes says I have a different number of podcasts downloaded.
The situation lasts for a few days, and after a random amount of time, my playlists are back, including the play count of the songs(most songs above 100 play count) and i get a different number of podcasts.
Not it seems to me i have two itunes, and every sync with the iphone requires the data on the phone to be deleted and freshly installs all sync songs/podcasts. This makes every sync 30 min long.
In the itunes folder i have:
itunes library extras.itdb
itunes library genius.itdb
itunes library.xml
itunes library.itl
itunes music library.xml
i found that itunes music library.xml contains information with play count 1 or 0
however the itunes library.xml contains the original infomation, with fields of play count a 100 or above.
My first thought was to delete the itunes music library. I found that whenever i restart itunes the file is automatically generated.
How can i stop this "random forgetfullness" of itunes?

Do you have Windows Live OneCare or some other security software? Tell that software not to scan the ITL and XML files. That can cause problems when itunes is trying to save/update those files while the security software has a hold on it.
Also - the "itunes music library.xml" is left over from an older version. I am fairly certain the newest versions of itunes uses "itunes library.xml".
If it was my PC, I would delete "itunes music library.xml". You could always just move it to another folder if you are hesitant to delete it, but get it out of the itunes folder.
Backing up, itunes needs an ITL file to run.
1) If no valid ITL file exists, it creates a new one (blank library) and ignores the XML file.
2) If it finds an existing ITL, it uses it and ignores the XML file.
3) If it finds a valid but damaged ITL, it looks for an XML file and tries to rebuild the ITL from that.
I suspect what is happening in your case is #3, but itunes is using the older xml with the bad play counts to rebuild its ITL file. If you get rid of that bad XML file it will have no choice but to use the recent XML file to rebuild.
Of course the main reason of why this is happening needs to get sorted, but sometimes it's difficult to find what's causing the ITL problems in the first place. I'd look at security software settings and make sure the itunes database files are excluded.
Just curious, if you look in Win Explorer, what are the dates on those XML files - created and modified?

I bought a new comuter - Windows & and had my Itunes library on a USB Hard drive. How to I get ITunes to open that library with all the songs being available in Music? Any ideas would be helpful.

You are going to want to plug in the USB in your new computer, then drag the folder containing your music into the iTunes window. This should update your iTunes with those songs.
To make a copy of the songs, so that you no longer need your USB, go into iTunes > File > Preferences > then last tab, there should be a checkbox that says "copy file to iTunes music folder when adding to library".

I have a laptop and desktop can I sync my itunes to a master libary on a nas or my airport extream? this would be similar to syncing my devices to my imac (iPad, iPhonce, ect.)

two answers as I am unshour to what you want to do:
Setup homeshareing or:
1) QUIT not just Close iTunes if it open
1) Make a folder on the shared disk
2) Move the "Users/username/Music/iTunes folder you want to share with all the devices to the folder on the shared disk
3) Make that folder accessable by all the users you want to access it.
4) Hold the "Option/alt" key down and click iTunes and it will ask if you want to "Choose a Library"
5) click "Choose a Library" and choose the one on the shared disk
6) Do this on evey meachine you want to have access to this library
8) REMBER THAT IF YOUR NOT CONNECTED TO YOUR SHARED DISK THEN YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS YOUR LIBRARY but you can choose librays at any time by using step 4 and you can have as meany librarys as you like.

Every time I tried to send a gift to certain people I was getting an error that itunes was busy or internet connection was not good BUT then I removed the ampersand "&" from the recipient name and notes and it worked!

Itunes messes with my libraries and songs when connected with ipod.

On my itunes when i move songs around to other libraires and such it wont add them to the library when it downloads to the ipod. When i make my libraires on the ipod and i connect my ipod to itunes it deletes everything i have made on the ipod and reverts back to the libraries on itunes. Basically if i want my ipod libraries set up the way i want i cant connect my ipod to itunes anymore. I also have a problem with itunes not being able to locate music files in my library folders after i move a few songs around or add mor songs or whatever. How do i get my itunes to leave the libraires the way i make them and not keep songs from transfering over to the ipod. Its actually ******* me off. its not that the songs arnt playable they just keep getting removed on their own. how can i set up my music files in a folder where itunes will resort to and not have any problems locating the files.

For anyone who hits this thread: Hit view, then "hide music in the cloud." Your libraries will return to how you have built them.
Kelly, your music is still probably on your hard drive. The iCloud is just a cute techy way of saying that you have online access to things you've purchased from apple... just wait until they make it so that you ONLY have online access to your purchases, and nothing ever comes "off" the cloud for you to tangibly own.
Folks, this is a smoke and mirrors gimmick to make you buy-in to the itunes store. Let Apple manage, deliver, and DECIDE all the content that you will see. It's at least one degree more insiduous than corporate radio.
Kudos on the crisp interface and larger album cover displays, but...
Apple cannot find cover art for 1/3 of the library that I have built. That is because Apple does not carry that music. Apple will never host music from ancient vinyl that I have remastered, Apple will never host the shows of obscure electronica djs or the local bluegrass bands that put out EPs in the western US in the 80s. If you restrict your music experience to a single venue, you are not only missing out, but you are supporting an economic model which quashes music that does "not meet industry standards." Have fun with iTunes 11 kids.
