Copy of OS X for Backup Purposes

Hi,
I have recently bought a MBP so am new to OSX.
I dont have a backup version of OSX on CD or DVD.
Is there a way of downlaoding a copy from the app store that I can archive in case I need to reload the MBP?
Many Thanks in Advance,

One can male a bootable drive for Lion.  Look at this link to OS X Daily:
http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/08/make-a-bootable-mac-os-x-10-7-lion-installer-from -a-usb-flash-drive/
This can be usefull in those instances where Internet connections may not be available.

  • Replication for backup purpose

We are using Berkeley db on server in a highly concurrent environment. The no of requests per second is huge and we can't afford to lose any committed data. We have 1 master where all updates will go and that's the box that is serving all the UI requests. We are planning to replicate the bdb to other backend nodes for readonly purposes. We don't want any node other then the UI node to become a master(basically no elections otherwise the writes would become complex). The question I have to all Berkeley db gurus is that we are planning to have a standby replica of Berkeley db just for backup purpose, currently we checkpoint every 2 minutes and rsync to another machine but even loss of data for 2 minutes is catastrophic. We had to do a catastrophic recovery once already and lost some data.
Is this replicating to a standby node for recovery purpose a reasonable strategy that people are already using or am I missing something completely and there is a better way to do this?

    Hello,
This question generates more questions than anything else. What version of BDB are
    you talking about?
Your question also implies, since you talk about
checkpoint and losing 2 minutes of data, that you are running with DB_TXN_NOSYNC. Running
with DB_TXN_NOSYNC opens up durability vulnerabilities that must be weighed against
performance. Using replication is possibly a reasonable approach, depending on details
of course. You likely want to investigate memp_trickle. However, only you can weigh
the durability versus performance tradeoff of NOSYNC, but realize it is a tradeoff.
Or you can consider running with NOSYNC on the backup, but not on the master.
That has different performance tradeoffs depending on acknowledgements (see below).
First, if we assume you are using the Replication Manager API, then you need to properly
set your priorities on the backup(s) to 0 (you talk about multiple nodes sometimes and
a single backup at other times so I'm not sure how many replicas you intend). However,
by setting priorites to 0, then you need to understand what your strategy is for failure.
What steps do you intend to take when a failure occurs (or when the former master is
restarted)? What about failure of the backup?
For instance, if your replicas run with DB_TXN_NOSYNC, then the only way to
synchronize a rebooted former master that lost its data is to have it join the
group, and some other site become master so that it can synchronize with that
master. On the other hand, if you manually copy the databases and logs from
the replica to the failed master site, then you lose any txns, pages, and log records that
are still in the memory buffers. So there are several combinations of tradeoffs
there. If you run synchronous txns on the backup, manually copying the
databases and logs should work, but you have the performance impact that
    will delay the replica's acknowledgement.
If you're using Replication Manager, what ack policy are you using? The answer depends
on how many sites you have and how you configure them. If you have more than 2
sites total then you likely want QUORUM policy. If you only have 2 sites, then you may
want the ONE policy or something else depending on whether you have set the
    2SITE_STRICT flag or not.
As I said, there are a lot of tradeoffs in many places and BDB gives you the
flexibility to make those tradeoffs. But you need to understand your requirements
and understand what tradeoffs you make and their impact.

  • Need to add Hard Disk for backup purposes

    Hi all,
I'm new here and really new to Netware. I'm just beginning to get involved with Netware Servers (V 6.5) and am trying to add hard disks to a server for backup purposes. I have two SCSI hard disks to add to this server and wish to name them backup_1 and backup_2. Using the Backup Exec software we have a site license. I want to be able to do an incremental backup Monday thru Thursday and a full back up on Friday on each disk alternating out the disks weekly with one of the disks being off site while the other is in service.
I can add the new drive in a Hot manner and then must go through configuring the disk.....during the configuration I'm asked if I want the disk to be a part of a pool or something to that effect. What do I want to do here?
Actually I'd like to know just what is a pool technically? I've got several books on Netware and none of them has painted me a clear picture of just what a pool is.
I'm kind of excited to be learning about Netware I hope you all can bear with me as I stumble through this.
    Thanks so much!!!

A pool is a structure between a volume and a partition. It allows, for instance, you to have multiple volumes in a pool, each of which can dynamically grow to use unallocated space within the pool on demand.
    Novell Documentation
In your situation they are of no extra use to you, what you do is create a partition on each of those new disks, and create a volume on each and let it (I assume you are using NSSMU on the console) automatically create an underlying pool for each of those volumes.

  • MP early 2008: Seeking advice on e-sata card and external enclosure for backup purposes

    Hi everyone
I currently have my home folder on an internal 3TB drive which is SuperDuper'd every day to an identical internal drive.
I am running out of space and need to think of a longer-term solution. I will have to use several large drives - one drive for photos, one for iTunes library, one for documents etc. Each drive would be mirrored with SuperDuper to something like an IcyCUBE and connected through a PCIE e-sata card. I'm not considering any form of RAID solution.
Is Sonnet still the card manufacturer to go for - if so, is the E2P the card I need? Are there alternative cards and if so what should I look for (certain chipsets perhaps)?
Are there any known compatibility problems between certain cards and certain drive enclosures?
Is there a way to have only one cable between the computer and the enclosure or must each drive have its own connection?
Thanks very much in advance for any help with this.
    Cheers
    Philip

E2P is a low end two port card with limitation in bandwidth. Maybe you want 4-port card to give you more growth and expansion.
Green drives may or may not be ideal for your media storage needs. Cheaper. When floods drove up prive of drives in Sept 2011 they become more popular as Black 2TB price went to $270
Clone  is one thing. Mirror is entirely different tech.
The issue are avoid those name brand WD and Seagate or LaCie enclosures.
Every new OS and Mac Pro has had some sort of change to drivers and such.
4TB drives should be part of your storage strategy.
Software RAID is fine with daily or as needed backups. Clone at least one, and TimeMachine for hourly. But never ever have only one backup set. One set should be off line and they would be rotated. For safety sake and avoid the all your eggs in one basket. Which is why yes internal is convenient but external drives and also drive enclosure that allows swapping.
A good USB3 + eSATA card is the most popular I think right now today.
And use Green 3-4TB for backup, and WD Black or enterprise for internal storage.

  • External DVD burner for backup purposes

I feel more secure knowing that I have several different forms of backups. I'm looking at a Lacie D2 DVD +/- Desktop DVD & CD burner with LightScribe, USB & firewire interface, for Windows and Mac. I have an Epson printer with VD printing capabilities so I'm not interested in the LightScribe features. Is this a good reliable burner or can someone recommend another model, preferably Lacie.

I have an older version of this burner and it's been great for quite a few years. In fact, I seldom use my internal burner because I prefer the LaCie.

  • Copy Standard infotype screen for country purpose

    Hi,
I am trying to copy the Standard screen (2007) for the infotype IT0002 to make some country specific modification.
However I am not able to copy the standard screen as it is asking for the Access Key.
Can you please suggest if there is a way to copy the standard infotype screen without providing the access key.
    Regards

    Hi,
Why don't you just enhance the infotype via PM01 - Enhance single screen?

  • Ipod Classic 160gb transfer data software? Do Apple provide any facilities to recapture all music etc from an ipod classic and save them back into the itunes library or even better onto a separate pc memory or external drive for backup purposes?

I now have around 3,000 songs on my ipod Classic and still adding. I didn't want to save them in itunes library so I deleted them from there once I had them on the ipod. I have since found out that the ipod music cannot be transferred back to the itunes library nor can I extract them from the ipod directly. Do apple provide such facilities or softwareto do this and, if not, is there any recommended and safe software to perform it? I see from Google that there are plenty of programs available but I want to be sure that what I use is safe, reliable and not breaking any of Apple's terms and conditions. Any advice would be welcome.

    Hello Chris Jones,
I just found this and I'm trying to figure it out so your post is an excellent starting point, thank you! Since you posted this in Feb are there any things you would change or you found out after doing it? And how is everything running?
As a data point, I just added a SSD as the startup drive to an older mac pro (1,1) which is only used for Logic Pro and the speed now is amazing. Now I want to see if I can off-load the same things you have dealt with. Any additional insight will be greatly appreciated and thanks again for taking to time to document it.

  • Burning large QT .mov file to DL-DVD for backup

    Hello
To be clear. I am not interested in creating a DL-DVD for playback on a set top DVD player connected to a television.
Rather, I haver a 6+GB .mov file that I would prefer to keep intact and burn to a DL-DVD. I need to do this mainly for backup purposes and would like to try & avoid manually cutting up the file into multiple smaller .mov files in FCS. The file has already been compressed using the H.264 codec and I would like to avoid any further compression.
So, my question is, can I burn this file to a data DL-DVD without having to worry about the "break point" on the DL-DVD corrupting my QT .mov file?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Tim

Unless I'm missing something Video Monkey is an encoder. I've already encoded the video so that is not an issue.
I'm trying to find out whether or not I can burn my 6+gig .mov file to a data DL-DVD without the "break point" corrupting the file for the purpose of backing it up should the copy on my HDD get corrupted.
    Thanks for the reply though.

  • Use different iTunes and iCloud accounts only for backup

    Hello Everyone,
Recently I update my iPhone 5,my wife iPhone 6 ,my wife iPad to iOS 8.3 and my MacBook Air to 10.10.3.
As part of the upgrade i purchase more space on iCloud for backuping my photo library.
I'm using the same account (iTunes and iCloud) on my Mac and my iPhone but using different one on my wife iPhone and iPad .
is there any option to use my iCloud account on my wife iPhone and iPad just for backuping purpose.
I saw that i can logged out from iCloud on her devices and logging in with my iCloud account but i'm affirmed to sync all of my personal data (contacts and so on) to her devices.
    please advice.
    Thanks,
    Marco.

    This sounds like misconfiguration issues.
For Calendars, log into each of your accounts on iCloud.com. Check the Calenders app there to ensure each of your iCloud-based calendars are properly shared between your wife and you. Remember, when you invite another person to share your calendar, that other person must accept the invitation.
For Contacts, make sure you have contacts in your account (check on your phone and on iCloud.com). On your phone, go under Settings/iCloud and make sure the toggle is on for Contacts. Again on your phone, go to Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Swipe down and make sure your default calendar is your iCloud-based calendar.
Hope this provides some insights that lead to a solution for you.

  • Burning Blu-ray discs for backup

I need to be able to burn large data discs for backup purposes. I am considering purchasing an external blu-ray burner and would like to know if I need to buy third party software to burn discs or if the finder will do this without third party software. I don't mind using 3rd party software but would rather not pay for something I don't need.

Remember optical disks you burn have a limited life expectancy. Any backup plan must include provision to take that into account or it is worthless.

  • Two Computers for backup

    Hi,
Just want to know that I have 2 computers One at office and one at home, Can use the same device on both the computer on i tunes, for sync, backup and buying apps.
An urgent reply in this regard will be highly appreciated.

All iTunes content on your iPhone - all music, movies, tv shows, and 3rd party apps should be in your iTunes library on your computer. Your iTunes library should be included with your computer's backup stored on an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes only along with all other important data on your computer such as documents, photos, etc.
Backing up your iTunes library per the simple instructions included with this link and transferring the backup to a new or different computer along with the new or different computer being authorized with the same iTunes account will prevent any iTunes content from being erased from your iPhone with the first sync with iTunes on the new or different computer.

    its very easy:
    1. backup your database via SQL Studio
    2. restore the same database via SQL with another name
