Copy/Paste Settings mystery?

OK. I've searched this forum and either haven't used the appropriate phrase or it's just not covered.
I have tried and tried to use "Develop > Copy Settings..." and "Develop > Paste Settings" to transfer various settings from one image to one or more other images in the Develop module. No go.
I have also tried the "Sync..." button in the Develop Module and THAT doesn't work as expected.
The *only* way that appears to work is to change to "Auto Sync..." and work from there.
Now, please, before someone says this is a 'design feature' save your breath. If what I see is correct, then this is a bug. If I'm missing something then please educate me.
Thanks,
Bob Peters

LR is using Ctrl-C or Ctrl-V only for editing text in Keywords, Metadata, etc., it seems. There is no reason not to also use it for image changes as well. It only requires LR check what was selected before the key combination: text in a field? Or an image from filmstrip or grid?
As there are already ways of copying/templating text for metadata, keywords, etc. such as Sync button, dragging/drop keyword tags, assignment at import, etc. I'm guessing that copying and pasting changes to image are a good additional and logical use for Ctrl/Cmd-C and Ctrl/Cmd-V.
I disagree with your comparison to MS Office applications. Images in LR are like Powerpoint slides that you receive and edit via MS Powerpoint. There are direct analogs in Powerpoint for LR metaphors: slide sorter (grid), slide outline (filmstrip), slide master formats (develop pre-sets), and on and on... including inserting/updating/deleting/copying/pasting modifications
Copy and Paste of image edits should be as straightforward as RSP and Office and the most logical action for Ctrl/Cmd-C and -V ... especially because it was so elegant in RSP, the developer(s) of which Adobe brought onto the LR team.
Nothing wrong with modifiers keys (shift, alt, etc.) for the lesser used contexts of Copy and Paste operations, but get the most important/frequently used contexts using the fewest keys!
The more I use 1.0 version of LR in trial, the more convinced I am that it's still rough around the edges and a half-step backwards in productivity compared to my current workflow, though I see it's potential. I'm probably going to wait for 1.5 or Service Pack 1 or whatever the next update release is and re-evaluate then.
I think LR needs to be a little more flexible to better work the way individual photographers would like it to work instead of (what seems to be) imposing a more rigid, uniform discipline on the way all LR users work.
"Your mileage may vary".

  • Copy/Paste settings always includes lens corrections even if not ticked? (LR3)

I'm having trouble with copy/paste settings on LR3, in that whenever I copy settings and paste them onto other images, the settings for the Lense Corrections section are always transferred, even though they were not ticked in the copy settings dialog. Can anyone else confirm this is a bug or am I doing something wrong?
Edit: Should have mentioned, LR 3.0, Mac OSX 10.6.4, iMac i7.
    Thanks,
    David

    I CANNOT reproduce that.
Do you have the lens correction box unchecked? or do you just have the four boxes under that hierarchy unchecked?

  • Lightroom 3.5 copy/paste settings is different, and IMHO, broken

For some reason now you cannot paste the settings you copy when you are in the loupe or grid view.  Command-shift C still copies in loupe and grid, but you are no longer allowed to paste, unless you are in the develop module.  You must copy them in the develop module as well, or the settings don't seem to be pasteable.   Aggg - hard to describe this.  Does this make sense to anyone?  Is anyone else also seeing this?

I still can copy/paste Ctrl+Shift+C/V both in Grif and Loupe modes in LR 3.5 final.
When you hit Command-shift-C in grid or Loupe, does the Copy dialog box pop up?

  • BUG: Copy / Paste settings

This bug has been reported in various forms.  But I'd like to chime in.
I'm finding that the set of develop settings I copy are not pasting correctly onto other images.  Sometimes settings I have NOT checked are pasted; other times settings I HAVE checked are being pasted.  The bug does not seem to be related to the specific combination of settings checked and unchecked.   Particularly I've found that copy/pasting UNCHECKED white point settings will not paste.  UNCHECKED crop will paste.  It's quite frustrating.  I have not found a work around.
I am using LR 3.2 RC.

Mark, you can report this here. This would be most helpful. This forum is now mostly for user help rather than technical issues.

  • Why do I have to insert someone else's resume into my profile to change my copy paste settings??

I just want to use copy/paste with my mouse.
Why can't you make it just a toggle in Firefox?
Why do I have to enter someone else's resume in my user.js file??
    That makes even LESS sense.
    For Firefox:
Quit Firefox. If you have Quick Launch running (in Windows, an icon in the toolbar), quit that too.
    Find your Firefox profile directory.
Open the user.js file from that directory in a text editor. If there's no user.js file, create one.
    Add these lines to user.js:
    [edit: removed personal information]
Note: The preference is site as well as protocol specific. For example:
    user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "http://www.mozilla.org")
    is not the same as:
    user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites", "https://www.mozilla.org")
This is because the first uses HTTP while the second uses HTTPS.
If you want to allow multiple URLs to access the Paste operation, separate the URLs with a space. For example:
    user_pref("capability.policy.allowclipboard.sites",
    "https://www.mozilla.org https://developer.mozilla.org")
For more information about security policies, see http://www.mozilla.org/projects/security/components/ConfigPolicy.html.

Sorry about that. You can find the addons by using:
    <br> Tools > Add-ons > Extensions
<br> "Extensions" is under the "Get Add-ons" item
    Screenshot:
    <br> http://www.3drotator.com/support/JavaFirefox12AddOnsManagerExtensions.jpg
I'm thinking maybe those sites use different text editors than other websites making copy and pasting outside of those webpages a PITA.
This site tries to explain how to do what you were trying to do earlier.
    <br> http://www.infogears.com/cgi-bin/infogears/mozilla_firefox_copy_paste.html
<br>Which is to enable access to the clipboard (the place where copied items are stored) for these sites.
The addon [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/allowclipboard-helper/ AllowClipboard Helper] tries to fix this on websites like the ones you go to. But it can be tricky to setup. There's a good tip from one of the reviewer's of that addon by the guy named '''pewe''' ([https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/allowclipboard-helper/reviews/351658/ Link to review]).
So in Firefox, copying is blocked from certain text editors.
<br> This article tries to explain why Firefox does this:
    <br> http://kb.mozillazine.org/Granting_JavaScript_access_to_the_clipboard
It works in Internet Explorer because they are not strict about this "Javascript access to clipboard" feature but Firefox is b/c they think it's a security risk since the website can read and copy whatever you put into the clipboard.
So long story short, certain websites use text editors that make it impossible to copy & paste stuff from them to other areas where you want to copy & paste. You could try all the stuff I mentioned above (although it's a bit nerdy) or you can save yourself the trouble/frustration and just use Internet Explorer when browsing these websites.
If you hate switching between IE & Firefox just to check a few sites, try the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/ie-tab-2-ff-36/ IE Tab addon]. It lets you use Internet Explorer inside Firefox by opening it in a special tab. Don't ask me how they do it. :P But it works.

  • Copy/Paste Settings in Develop Module Never works first time

Only just noticed this one since upgrading from LR4 Beta to LR4.
First session developing a few shots taken over the weekend (.CR2 RAW files). When I only have a few shots, all taken in the same environment,  I tend to just get the first one right and then Copy the Develop settings, and paste them onto each subsequent shot.
What happens on my 64 bit Windows 7 box - the first time I paste the settings to any shot, I get the task bar appear at the top right, which after a brief time changes to 'task completed' - but no settings have been pasted.
If I then paste the settings it works the second time.
This has happened to me consistently across around 30 shots now.
    Anyone else seen this?

  • Copy/paste settings: a bug?

I am using LR 3.0 and made a sharpening adjustment in a photo which I wanted to copy to multiple others.  In Develop module, I hit Copy, clicked on "Sharpening" and then selected a dozen others and hit Paste.  Not all the others had a sharpening adjustment showing up in History.  Is this a bug?

Since you are in the Develop module, I assume you are selecting the images in the filmstrip. If you do not have AutoSync on, then the paste will only affect the most selected image.
Turn on AutoSync and see what happens.

  • Cannot Copy & Paste in SharePoint

Several of my users are experiencing the same issue. They all have IE 11, but it happens with Chrome and Firefox as well. We are using SharePoint 2010 internally, and since about 3-4 weeks, it seems these employees (not all) are no longer able to copy-paste
text into textboxes of a new item form. We have checked the IE copy/paste settings, the Office clipboard, and several other PC related settings but nothing seems out of the ordinary.
Looking for new hints. What else can we check?

Have you tried turning on Compatibility Mode to see if that solves the problem?

  • Copy and Paste should enter more than just 'Paste Settings' in the History list.

It would be nice if you could actually copy and paste (or Sync) the actual sequential history list from one pic to another. I find myself needing to look at the History list fairly often (to see what changes I made) and it is much too vague to only see 'Paste Settings' appearing in the History list.
Ideally the pasted list would weed out all trial and error entries and cleanly list only the final settings.

The contacts must exist in the address book that you create the mailing list in.
After that make sure the Directory pane is turned on and showing in the address book window. If it is not showing, from the menu bar select View-Layout-Directory Pane
Click on the address book so its contacts are showing in the main window
You should see the Mail List as a subfolder of the address book. If not, click the small pointer beside the book to expand the view.
Now find and select the contacts for the mail list and then drag and drop them on the mailing list folder to add them to the list.

  • Copy/paste saturation settings

I have corrected my saturation on a photo in the Develop module and would like to copy that saturation to other photos. I click 'copy' in the lower left and get the dialog to select my choice of settings, so I only check saturation. I then move to my desired recipient image and click 'paste' and nothing happens. Same result in Library module when I use Photo > Develop Settings > Copy Settings and Paste Settings. NADA!!
I am using LR 5.3 on Windows Pro 7

I removed preference file and when I restarted, I panicked since it wanted to start a new catalog, but I solved that and unfortunately, this did not solve the copy/paste problem.
However, I did find something. I had been checking ONLY the saturation checkbox, but when I check the color checkbox (which checks all three - saturation, vibrance and color adjustments), then the settings are copied. I had not made any changes to vibrance, and I don't know what is meant by color adjustments, but it did indeed copy the saturation changes.
So this still does not answer the question.

  • Copy-Pasting crop settings also affects other Develop settings?

I noticed the following behavior in my Lightroom 4.3. Let's say I have two almost identical pictures. Both have their Develop settings reset, no keywords and store some GPS info (so in the flimstrip both pictures have a "geotag" icon overlaid on them and no other icons).
Now, I go to Develop screen and crop the first picture. I leave other Develop settings untouched. This makes a "crop" icon to appear on the first picture in the filmstrip. All works as it should.
After that I ask Lightroom to copy the Develop settings from the first picture. In the selection dialog I leave everything unchecked besides the crop settings. I.e. I want to copy crop settings only, nothing else. Then I immediately paste these settings over the second picture. Expectedly, the second picture gets cropped in exactly the same way as the first one. It also acquires a "crop" icon in the filmstrip. However, in addition to the crop icon it also gets a "+/-" icon, as if some other Develop settings got changed by the paste as well. A quick inspection shows that all Develop settings (besides crop, of course) remain at their default values.
I wonder why the second picture acquires that "+/-" icon. Is there some hidden Develop setting that gets affected by my paste, even though I explicitly asked Lightroom to copy crop settings only? Or is it just a user-interface-level bug?

I reported this strange behaviour a year ago already for LR 3.4: http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lightroom_3_4_1_wrong_activation_of_ badge_has_delevop_adjustments. LR 4.3 seems to have the same bug (at least I think it is a bug).
As far as I know, no "real" development settings are affected by this bug, however an internal flag for "has development settings" seems to be set when the "+/-"-badge appears. This means that such images are found by smart collections with "has adjustments = true". So it is not just an user-interface-level bug.

  • Copy / paste color tint/temperature settings in develop

Lightroom 5.2 I have been trieing to copy and paste settings from one .dng file into the next in the develop module. I tried to copy (shift command c) the color temperature and tint and paste in the other file (shift command v) but nor Kelvin nor green magenta balance changes. What do I do wrong...?

    Great!
that’s it. I understand the logic behind it as well.
    Thank you for the help.

  • Synchronize settings and copy and paste settings not working LR 4.1

    Recently upgraded to LR 4.1.
The copy and paste settings and also synchronize setttings in LR 4.1 has stopped working.
    Rebooted, nothing new added
    AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.60gh
    16 GB ram
    64 bit

I am also seeing issues in 4.1 with Synchronize settings. I'll giove an example:
Select all images, change the white balance in most selected image, Click "Sync..." have only the "white balance" check box checked, click Synchronize biutton. All images in that folder appear to have synched, but looking more closely, some of the images did not get the white balance setting applied - this is really random also. Had the same issue trying to sync exposure across all images in a folder - 150ish images.
Never seen this in any version of LR prior to 4.1 - I have had them all since 1.2.
    I am running Windows 7 x64 8GB on i7 920.
Hopefully Adobe are investigating this issue.

  • Turning off copy and paste settings

If I previously copy and paste settings in lightroom 5 from one photo to the next as I scroll through my photos it will continue to copy and paste the settings without being prompted. How do I turn this off?

    Hi Carla,
Can you do Help > Check for Updates and install the 5.2 update?
I think this should be fixed in the 5.2 update. Would be curious to hear your report!

  • Mysteriously losing copied develop settings

Recently I have noticed a continuing intermittent problem with my develop settings that I have copied to the clipboard seeming to disappear when I move on some photos down the filmstrip and go to paste them on another photo. This normally seems to happen when I move more than a couple of photos down the strip or grid. I have copied using Ctl+Shift+C and will paste using Ctl+Shift+V (LR4.1, Win 7 64). If I have moved on a bit since the copy (confirmed by the copy options dialog box having come up) often I will see the 'Pasting Settings' progress bar flash above the Navigator but find that all the Basic (and other) sliders will still remain at zero and the photo will not reflect the changes.
I have been working in folders lately with a mix of RAW (Sony .arw) and JPEG files but most of my copy/pastes are being done on the RAW files. I haven't tested whether the problem is exclusive to the RAWs.I am moving through a side-by-side mixture though and am sure that this is not happening from mixing up the setting applications between them. Any clues as to what may be triggering the clipboard to reset?

@Brett: I'll do a double-check on that when the problem crops up, but as I mentioned I am seeing the 'Pasting Settings' progress bar, just with no real results.
I'm going to install the new 4.2 beta this evening so hopefully this ghost will just disappear.
