Copy-pasting clips versus export to full DV

Folks,
With the export to full quality DV option, all the selected clips are combined to form a single clip. Is there any kind of compression done when this option is selected?
One obvious advantage of the export option (versus copy-paste) is that all edits (audio and video) are retained
Thanks

With the export to full quality DV option...
Is there any kind of compression done when this option
is selected?
There's no compression. The Full Quality export is the same format as the project video itself.
One obvious advantage of the export option (versus
copy-paste) is that all edits (audio and video) are
retained...
With exporting, edits are "frozen" in place, so yes I suppose one could say they are retained.
But Copy/Paste retains the clips as clips AND the clips can be restored to their original condition. All the non-destructive features of the Copied clips are retained when Pasted into another project.

  • Space problems when copy/paste clip

Import of an DV-Pal digitalized 59 min S8-film from a DV-cassette by Magic iMovie filled 11,77 GB of HD space. That's o.k.. But when trying to create a new iMovie project using copy and paste by already 6 clips of this film, together lasting ca 1:28 min, new project's need of HD-space exploded to more than 33 GB. The menu diplay for format choice only shows DV, no differentiation between PAL and NTSC. The new clipframes however indicate DV-Pal. I deleted iMovie preferences and reinstalled the program, but without a positiv result.

what catspaw (greetings to NZ, hi Bruce!!) told you is:
when you import 60min as one solid clip,
and when you now choose a 1min portion of that clip
and when you copy/paste that into another project. ..
=> iM doesn't move only a 1/60th of the original, but the full ~13GBs.. !!
the idea behind this is, that you are allowed to 'modify' that shorter clip in the other project.. e.g. you can 'lengthen' it with the trimmers..
    you have two options:
forget copy/paste, but Export/Full Quality your selections only.. due to dv, this is a lossless workflow, you don't lose any quality..
    or, on import:
tell iM in its prefs, to 'chop' imports automatically into smaller chunks, e.g. 5min.
it doesn't matter on editing or playback, if oyu have a solid clip or many single clips..
copy/Pasting now a selection results in a much smaller 'background' file..
    hope, I could explain...

  • Project duplication:  Copy/Paste vs. Export/Import

Anyone have any thoughts on project duplication?
Presently I am copying a project and then pasting it into multiple new locations then renaming them. Recently I was in a training session where the instructor suggested exporting the project and then importing it claiming database size savings. Can anyone shed any insight?
    Thanks in advance.

I can't imagine why an export/import would be a smaller footprint within the database than a project copy/paste. Not to mention that if you are talking about a relatively large project it can take a substantial amount of time to export and import. One of our schedules that is about 18k activities takes approximately 1.5 hours to export/import where as a project copy/paste only takes about 10 minutes. Note that we do not copy the baseline schedules when replicating projects.

  • --Any way to copy/paste clips from one project to another w/o LOSING TRANSITIONS...??

    I have CS5...
I'm trying to speed up render/export time. I have multiple edited video's in about 15 different projects.
I had a couple video's within one project and rendered the work area - consisting of 4 video's...then exported. It was much faster than just going to straight exporting so I wanted to do the same with all the other video's.
Pull everything into one project - render first - and export from there but premiere doesn't copy transitions from one project to another. Is there any way to get it to copy/paste transitions??
    Thanks

exported regularly and took 2hrs 50min's for each video....then rendered and exported - took prob around 2hrs total - including rendering/exporting.
That seems unlikely.  If anything, the separate render/export should take slightly longer (though not that much) as you may also have to transcode the preview files (depending on your preview codec) during the render, as well as decode them for the export.  Besides adding an additional layer of compression, it also adds time.  Here's what I mean.
    Export only:
    1. Decode original media
    2. Render new frame based on sequence, effects, titles, etc.
    3. Transcode that new frame to the export codec of choice.
    Render (1-3) /Export (4-5)
    1. Decode original media.
    2. Render new frame based on sequence, effects, titles, etc.
    3. Transcode that new frame to the Preview codec (if anything less than Uncompressed, this adds time and potentially degrades quality)
    4.  Decode the rendered frame (if not Uncompressed, which adds time)
    5. Transcode that (decoded) render frame to the export codec of choice.
So you see, the render first process has two extra steps which add time, one of which could also introduce additional artifacts (depending on your preview codec).

  • Copy/paste clips from a library/project to another copying media on the new library

I want to copy/paste some clips from a project timeline to another but COPYING MEDIA also on the second library/project. How can I do?

I'm in the project  "Anima mia" (which is together with an event in a library: all with the same name "Anima mia"). I want to pick up FROM THE TIMELINE some audio clips (which are the edited part of bigger clips placed in the browser) and some video clips (which are the edited part of bigger clips placed in the browser) and copy them on a new Project called "Riferimento" (which is with an event inside a library: all with the same name "Riferimento"), and I want to copy also the concerning original files to the new library. But I can't, infact if I copy/paste these clips in the new project/library I get this
I'd like to choose if leaving the original media in the source library or if phisical copying them to the new library. But it doesn't seems possible here....
    Is it clear?

  • Copying & pasting clips question

We're trying to copy a clip and paste it right above the first one, but it REALLY wants to go to track 1 every time. We looked it up in help and here's what it says:
"Adobe® Premiere® Elements 8 pastes clips to the Video 1 or Audio 1 track at the location of the current-time indicator. However, you can avoid this action by manually copying clips on multiple tracks."
Then, of course, there is zero explanation of how to 'manually' copy and paste the clips so they go where you want them to.
Anyone know how this is done?  Holding in Alt doesn't seem to work, either...

In previous versions of the program, the paste always went to Video 1.
In Premiere Elements 8, your clip will be pasted to whatever track you copied the original file from.

  • Disk space error when copying/pasting clips between iMHD projects

Anyone know how to get around this problem? I have emptied all my trash, but continue to get a "not enough disk space" error message when I attempt to paste one copied iMHD clip to another iMHD project. How do I check my available disk space?
I assume that it's my startup disk because I run iMHD off of a Lacie 250GB external HD... Any thoughts?

When we Copy and Paste a clip between projects, iMovie HD duplicates the clip's entire source file to the project. That can be a very large file, so the "not enough disk space" error sometimes occurs when we don't expect it.
One way to learn which disk a project is on is to Command-click (that's the Apple key) on the project name in the titlebar at the top of the project window. The path to the project will appear.
In the Finder, select that disk and choose File > Get Info.
If there appears to be sufficient disk space, please tell us the exact error message.
Also make sure the disk is formatted correctly. iMovie requires the Mac OS Extended disk format. The disk format is reported in the same Get Info window.

  • Copy/Paste Clip between Sequences - Only one frame appears?

Hi all. A strange thing has started happening in FCP 7...not always but frequently. When I have two sequences open, I go to the first sequence and copy a clip. I go to the second and paste the clip and it shows up as very thin (one frame). I can then drag the end of it to make it longer but why doesn't it just paste the same length that it was copied?
    Thanks for any help.

Do you have any In and Out points marked in the timeline? When you do the copy function what area is highlighted in the timeline or selected?

  • Final Cut Pro 7: Copying/pasting clips in timeline w/o overwriting

How do I copy and paste clips in my timeline without overwriting the other clips? We know how to drag clips in the timeline (and do an insert edit), but this takes too long since we have dozens and dozens of clips already in our timeline. It's easier to be able to just copy and paste (or cut) but whenever we do this, when we paste the clip it automatically overwrites instead of inserting the clip at the playhead (and simply moving everything else down).
We think we must be doing something very simple wrong or having some unknown box checked because it seems obvious that this should be something very easy to do in any editing program. It doesn't make sense that the default setting of Final Cut is to overwrite clips, right?

This is the FCP-X forum, not the FCP-7 forum, but to answer your question -
to paste copied clips into the timeline without overwriting, place the playhead where you want to place your copied clip(s) and type Shift-V instead of Command-V.

  • QT 7 won't open .mov files after copy-pasting clips together

Working on latest video project: QT 7 Pro suddenly started reporting "can't find file ****" and "Searching" when trying to get it to play edited movie clips (.mov).
Of course, this was after I'd trashed the no longer needed files I'd used to either copy-paste short clips into one longer clip - or - after I used the "add audio track" command to add a voice over audio track.
Unable to make sense of this crash report - but maybe someone can tell me what's wrong here.

What are the aduio and video codecs of the clips in question? (Apple/CMD+I for get info). Are you playing them from her computer through a LAN connection on yours or copying them to yours and playing them , or at least trying to?
I cannot recall offhand the minimum specs for playback of high bitrate H264 clips but I suspect a 1.25 PPC Mini is well below the spec. Her macbook is about 10X more "powerful" than yours.
She could encode these clips to a smaller bitrate and maybe less strenuous codec like MPEG-4 vs. H264 at maybe 1000 kb/sec as a start.

  • Copying & Pasting Clips Results in Longer Duration(s)

I've been working on a wedding video for a friend recently.  I originally edited it in 3 separate sections (ceremony, reception, and a "day in review" music video) as 3 separate projects.  I am now in the process of trying to combine the 3 sections into one project on one timeline.  I copied and pasted the first 2 sections together into one project without any trouble, but when I try to copy and paste the clips and transitions from the third section, the video no longer syncs up with the music.  It's not even close.  The original clips and transitions create a video that is 4mins 39 secs long.  But when I copy and paste those clips and transitions the resulting video is now 5mins 22 secs long.  What is causing this? Even if I paste the clips & transitions into a completely new project the result is still a video longer in duration than the original.

As you've found out, copy and paste doesn't work reliably in iMovie.
You might consider the export/import method.

  • InDesign CS4 & IDML & Copy & Paste Bug

    Hello,<br /><br />i have build an InDesign CS 4 document with javascript; like this<br /><br />//HelloWorld.jsx<br />//Create a new document.<br />var myDocument = app.documents.add();<br />//Get a reference to the first page.<br />var myPage = myDocument.pages.item(0);<br />//Create a text frame.<br />var myHelloTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.add();<br />//Specify the size and shape of the text frame.<br />myHelloTextFrame.geometricBounds = ["6p0", "6p0", "18p0", "18p0"];<br />//Enter text in the text frame.<br />myHelloTextFrame.contents = "Hello World!";<br />var myStory = myHelloTextFrame.parentStory;<br />myStory.trackChanges=true;<br />myStory.insertLabel("innerText1","dbkey2211");<br /><br />var myInnerTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.add();<br />//Specify the size and shape of the text frame.<br />myInnerTextFrame.geometricBounds = ["6p0", "30p0", "18p0", "42p0"];<br />//Enter text in the text frame.<br />myInnerTextFrame.contents = "ziemlich sinnfreier Text";<br />var myInnerStory = myInnerTextFrame.parentStory;<br />myInnerStory.trackChanges=true;<br />myInnerStory.insertLabel("innerText2","dbkey3322");<br /><br />//Save the document (fill in a valid file path).<br />var myFile = new File("/c/HelloWorld.indd");<br />var result = "saved to:  " + myFile.fullName;<br />if(!myFile.parent.exists && !myFile.parent.create()) {<br />     result = "Not saved.  Unable to create the folder:  " + myFile.parent.fullName;<br />} else {<br />     myDocument = myDocument.save(myFile);<br />}<br />//Close the document.<br />myDocument.close();<br /><br />result;<br /><br />so i get the "HelloWorld.indd" file ... so far so good. Now i load this in InDesign and export it as IDML.<br /><br />I get for example this story<br /><br /><?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?><br /><idPkg:Story xmlns:idPkg="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/idml/1.0/packaging" DOMVersion="6.0"><br />     <Story Self="ue0" AppliedTOCStyle="n" TrackChanges="true" StoryTitle="$ID/" AppliedNamedGrid="n"><br />          <Properties><br />               <Label><br />                    <KeyValuePair Key="innerText2" Value="dbkey3322"/><br />               </Label><br />          </Properties><br />          <StoryPreference OpticalMarginAlignment="false" OpticalMarginSize="12" FrameType="TextFrameType" StoryOrientation="Horizontal" StoryDirection="LeftToRightDirection"/><br />          <InCopyExportOption IncludeGraphicProxies="true" IncludeAllResources="false"/><br />          <ParagraphStyleRange AppliedParagraphStyle="ParagraphStyle/$ID/NormalParagraphStyle"><br />               <CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/[No character style]"><br />                    <Content>ziemlich sinnfreier Text</Content><br />               </CharacterStyleRange><br />          </ParagraphStyleRange><br />     </Story><br /></idPkg:Story><br /><br />so far so good ... now i package them with "package -c HelloWorld Hello.idml" and load this document in InDesign ...<br /><br />at following i do some copy & paste actions and export the result to IDML and get this story ...<br /><br /><?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?><br /><idPkg:Story xmlns:idPkg="http://ns.adobe.com/AdobeInDesign/idml/1.0/packaging" DOMVersion="6.0"><br />     <Story Self="u186" AppliedTOCStyle="n" TrackChanges="false" StoryTitle="$ID/" AppliedNamedGrid="n"><br />          <StoryPreference OpticalMarginAlignment="false" OpticalMarginSize="12" FrameType="TextFrameType" StoryOrientation="Horizontal" StoryDirection="LeftToRightDirection"/><br />          <InCopyExportOption IncludeGraphicProxies="true" IncludeAllResources="false"/><br />          <XMLElement Self="di3i8" MarkupTag="XMLTag/Root" XMLContent="u186"><br />               <ParagraphStyleRange AppliedParagraphStyle="ParagraphStyle/$ID/NormalParagraphStyle"><br />                    <CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/[No character style]"><br />                         <Content>ziemlich sinnfreier Text</Content><br />                    </CharacterStyleRange><br />               </ParagraphStyleRange><br />          </XMLElement><br />     </Story><br /></idPkg:Story><br /><br />what the hell ... and find 2 differences <br /><br /> TrackChanges="false" <--- in the original this was true<br /><br />and the label has lost.<br /><br /><Properties><br />    <Label><br />     <KeyValuePair Key="innerText2" Value="dbkey3322"/><br />    </Label><br /></Properties><br /><br />so i think InDesign CS 4 have a bug in the copy and paste facility; only the content will be copied but all additional infos are lo

    Hi Bjoern,
I'm not sure that InDesign ever really copies a story, just the text in the story. Since the label and the track changes setting were associated with the story itself (and not with the text in the story), they didn't survive the transfer from one story to another.
It may depend on how you copy/paste--I'd expect the above to be true if you copy/paste with the Type tool, but I'm not sure what happens if you copy/paste all of the text frames in a story using the Selection tool. It may be that the label is maintained in that case.
    Thanks,
    Ole

  • Vector COPY/PASTE..wmf..svg..emf etc

    Hello:)
Im looking for a component to integrate in an application to copy/paste or import/export vectors between programs.
If theres someone that can assist me, will be great.
Is it possible that someone has the file structure /source code for emf/wmf ??
    Thanks for any consideration

Please email directis you can really assist me.

Of cause it is, but still I think it's a bug.
I don't think it should work this way. First, Include SVG Code to me is not equal to Replace copied objects by SVG Code. When I copy an object from an Illustrator file and then try to paste it back into an Illustrator file, why should I get code instead? Second, that code was not pasted every time. Just about every second or third time. Sometimes it worked with a single object, sometimes to get that SVG code I had to copy/paste multiple objects, while pasting single objects worked as expected. So, to me it looks like a bug.
And anyway, even if this function is supposed to replace objects with code, it should not be ON by default, not all of Illustrator users are developers. My estimate, most of us are not, actually.

  • Insert Edit when copy/pasting

    Hey everyone,
I've been using FCP for years now, so I feel silly that I don't know the answer to this....
I am copy/pasting clips from one sequence to another, but want to insert clips into the edit points, rather than overwriting. Is there any shortcut or trigger for this?

    Thanks!
    One more question...
When cutting a clip is there a shortcut so that there's not a gap remaining?
