Copy Right Question

Hey all,
Had a quick question about copy right. Are there photos online availible for the general public's use? I have noticed a few websites (cocktail websites) are using the same drink photos. Is this legal? I was going to make my own because I thought it was illegal to use another person's material.

What you've been seeing online are probably images from stock photography libraries.

Google "royalty free stock photography" and "free stock photgraphy"
Be careful with terms: royalty free doesn't always mean "free". Often means only pay once.
Stock photos have
advantages (professional, high quality, easy to obtain, convenient, cheap) and
disadvantages (generic appearance, obviously look like stock photos=minimal effort by website author, often very "samey", not unique to your website, cannot get precisely what you want so you may have to compromise a little)
Then there's Google's Search Images feature....

CS3 Extended copy right question

Hello,
I have a question concerning copy right of Photoshop CS3 Extended software.
Is it legal to sell a version of CS3 Extended on a flashdrive? There is a company that is selling it on a flashdrive and they claim that it doesn't have to be activated but the help files have been removed and the software cannot be undated.
I asked the company about the software and they claimed it is legal. This is what they said;
This is not an illegal copy. The "Patent and Legal Notices" in the "Help" menu clearly state in the (EULA) the following (section:2 paragraph 2):
"Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of the Unicode data files and associated documentation (the “Data Files”) or Unicode software and associated documentation (the “Software”) to deal in the Data Files or Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, and/or sell copies of the Data Files or Software, and to permit persons to whom the Data Files or Software are furnished to do so, provided that (a) the above copyright notice(s) and this permission notice appear in all copies of the Data Files or Software, (b) both the above copyright notice(s) and this permission notice appear in associated documentation, and © there is clear notice in each modified Data File or in the Software as well as in the documentation associated with the Data File(s) or Software that the data or software has been modified".

Copy right on sound effects in iMovie

I just got a strange email from youtube. They claim a movie clip of mine contains material which possibly is the property of "GoDigital MG For a Third Party".
I only used sound effects and music from imovie. Isn't this material free to use and publish in my movie clips?
Does anybody know more about this? I cannot find any indication of the copy right inside imovie.
It also states that I don't have to do anything, my clip is still available world wide but they could advertise on my page.
Thanks for any help in advance. If this meant trouble I would remove the clip. Its only a holiday film. Or I would move to Vimeo.

Funny you should ask about this. I had a company named Bat-Mann Productions... my partner's last name was Batenburg, and I'm Hofmann.... a natural.
Warner Bros took big time offense to this, and their lawyers were all over us. We won because it's not exactly the same, and our last names are part of the company name.... but nevertheless, I'd not push that particular franchise too hard, the lawyers are vigilant enough to find me all the way in Colorado... and give me a hard time.
A student of mine produced a spoof of Ghost Busters... the rights holder stopped him dead in his tracks within 24 hours of posting this movie on a website... Rights matter (as they should). It's not worth the hassle to fight it, and usually the rights holder has a lot more money to throw at beating you up than you do defending yourself.

Since I think Aperture will expect you to furnish a .psd file, it might be best to find a friend to create the watermark image as a PSD with transparent background.
Where are you using your images after they leave Aperture -- many gallery sites provide ways to watermark on their websites? Or are you wanting to have on images you print?
You might check on http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ for some app to create this, and you might investigate whether Photoshop Express (PS Online) has enough capability to create the needed file for Aperture.

You cannot copyright something that isn't yours. Your playlist presumably contains material already the copyright of someone else.

Hi Udo,
No, it is not OK or allowed. Both of these sites appear to me to be "content farms" that post as much content as possible with the goal of moving up in search rankings and making money off of ads. They are using your content in violation of your copyright.
In the case of the blogspot.com blog (a Google property), I believe you can report the unauthorized use of your work here: http://www.google.com/support/bin/request.py?contact_type=lr_dmca&product=blogger
There are some legal ramifications to making these sorts of claims, at least in the US. These issues are outlined in the form. So, you might decide against making the claim. It's up to you.

I created a Test/Template company where I configured such things as Font size, columns displayed on the various marketing documents etc. Will Copy Express copy these user specific setting from one company to another and if so, what options to I select when in Copy Express?

To know what Data Category are copying, you can click on the Data Category->In Data Details (right panel)->lower part, thereu2019s an explanation for most categories.

When you check the 2 checkboxes under this category, there are unresolved dependencies. To resolve them, please check other category.
==For Columns displayed on marketing documents:
If Iu2019m understanding you right, your request is to display UDF on marketing documents. If itu2019s the case, when creating a NEW DB, check the following:
Copy user-defined fields and tables
Copy user-defined objects
If thereu2019re also Query linked to the UDF, check Formatted Search Linked to User-Defined Fields

1. create a NEW DB with the following checkboxes checked

The System.arraycopy Functionality and copying array question

When created arrays such as String[] myStringArray (for example), is it general good practice to use the System.arraycopy function to copy the array?
Why isn't it good practice to use equal instead? Would this work just as well?

String[] myStringArrayCopy = new String[myStringArray.length};

Youre right, the equals sign just assigns the new array same reference in memory as the old array so they are pointing to the same data.
Im 90% sure of that.
If you want to work with an array without changing the original array id suggest using the System.arraycopy method. If you dont mind the contents changing then use the = sign..(but then why use a new array at all?)

Coordinates x y copy paste Question

Hi,
Is there a way to automatically show the coordinates of a box in Illustrator? I don't mean that i just need to know what the coordinates are... I know how to see them..
What I need is to have the x/y coordinates physically written and printed out and displayed right onto the canvas when I click the top left hand corner of square.
The only way I know how to achieve this is to copy and paste the coordinates on to the canvas each time. It there a faster more efficient way?

Rights question

Hi all,
In the past we have use trustee assignments on NSS volumes to setup student 'drop boxes'. These folder gave students no rights except "C" to create a file. It could be copied to the folder, but never seen, modified, erased. We use it extensively for assignment submission. It also stopped others from seeing fellow students submissions.
I am now needing to replicate this for Filr use (BYOD devices). However, it seems if I just assign "C" rights in the folder, Filr doesn't offer the ability to 'Add File'.
Does anyone have any thoughts around this?

This is a common request. It's not something that can be done with
Filr currently using its simplified rights model, but is something
we're looking at adding in the future. For now, unless a user has RF,
they won't be able to see the Net Folder.
If enabling the personal store is an option, students can work from there (only they see the content) and share specifically what's needed with those that need access to it (think "generic teacher account(s)" in Filr). That would take care of the viewing rights.
As those files probably need to end up on a server's share, maybe something can than be done with the desktop sync client (running on a Windows server), having it sync those shared files onto a central directory teachers have access to.
I realize this can get messy and probably is pushing it, depending how much "stuff" gets dropped in and needs to be maintained. Limiting each students personal store might help in keeping things lean.
That might give you an "in the meantime" solution until the needed feature gets added to Filr or another way is found.
