Copying a lot of data to the N8

When I got my N97, I spent a few months and ripped all of my CDs to MP3 so that I could stuff them all on the huge built-in storage of the phone. It worked OK, though the N97 choked a bit dealing with that many files.
Now I've got an N8 and it handles that many MP3s much better (though organizationally it's ... B- at best).
My problem: how to get the files *on* to the phone. When I had the N97, the process evolved thusly:
1) Plug in USB cable in PC Suite mode, copy files. Took a while, but it's over 4,000 tracks; just under 30GB, so that was understandable.
2) At some point, there was an update to PC Suite and in that mode, file transfers slowed to an unusable crawl. So I started putting it in USB Mass Storage mode, which brought it back up to previous speeds but caused other inconveniences with the phone.
3) Later, I got the EXCELLENT SymNAS software and copied everything over WiFi. This had the added bonus that I didn't have to stay tethered to the computer.
... Now on to the N8. "Only" 16GB of storage, but I got a 32GB uSD card to stuff in it so that's OK. PC Suite doesn't work with the phone, apparently, so just OVI Suite.
* Trying to transfer more than a few MB of files while it's plugged in by USB in OVI Suite mode just doesn't work; it hangs (at best) or crashes outright.
* Tried Mass Storage mode; the N8 seems to handle that transition better (though it's still a major settings change on the phone; theme changes back to default, stuff closes, widgets disappear and have to be reset, etc). Attempting to copy the big pile of files still hangs - hard - and takes down Windows with it.
* SymNAS doesn't work on the N8 (http://www.telexy.com/Support/Publications.aspx?codeid=CURRENT-COMPATIBILITY-WITH-SYMBIAN^3-PHONES) ... maybe if hundreds of people request it that will change?
What I ended up doing was taking the uSD card out of the phone, sticking it in an SD adapter, plugging that in to a USB slot on the computer, and just transferring the files that way, then sticking the uSD card back in the phone. It worked, just a bit cumbersome.
Has anyone else had better success in transferring large blocks of files to the N8?
Potentially useful: I'm trying this with Windows XP x64 *and* Windows 7, no real difference between the two in terms of behavior.
Thanks!

I dumped 850 odd tracks to the N8 in one go via Nokia ovi plaer,
took about 20 mins
and whilst there was some lag in the cover images appearing I was playing the tracks and scrolling through them 5 mins after the transfer ended,
covers became smoother once the thing had indexed properly

  • Using lots of data in the background, without counting on the data counter

I am having a pretty big problem with my phone where it is regularly using 171kb of data without me doing anything with the phone at all, even when I'm connected to WiFi. Last night it used 13MB without me even doing a single thing and that has been going on since I got the phone. And then, to make things worse, it doesn't record any of this data usage on the internal counter. I spoke to a CS person at Rogers who said she had never seen anything like it before and transferred me to technical support. That guy, who was about as useful as a hole in the head basically said nothing was wrong.
So here I have an iPhone that is eating up all of my data allowance, running itself towards an inevitable overage charge.
    Any ideas?

Yeah no, I don't have push on. When I found out about this problem, I promptly turned not only push off, but I also disabled my email accounts and synced calendars.
Today I turned my phone off for about 5 hours and confirmed with Rogers that no data was transmitted during the time it was off. I also restored the phone.
Luckily, a really nice guy at Rogers customer service (I recall saying something about their customer service guys being great but the technical support people being useless, he proved it) gave me 1 month of unlimited data usage (which I was supposed to have in the first place) in order to try and troubleshoot the problem myself. So luckily the panic is over for now and I can relax and watch X-Files for a while.
Despite all of this, my phone is still using 171kb at random. I have determined that it is likely related to the phone (an errant app perhaps?) and that the first data charge was put through only hours after I got the phone, so it's been consisted from the beginning (which if it were an app, would limit it to only a couple: Globe and Mail, Shazam, Remote, NY Times, & Facebook were the first ones I downloaded).
I have found many other people who are having this exact same problem (here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1501910&page=1&pp=15) , but nobody who has fixed it!

  • Why is my machine sending / receiving a lot of data to the Internet?

    Hi All,
After a few hours of running, my machine starts receiving and sending data from and to the Internet at about 275kbps each way (the maximum speed that my Internet connection supports). Here is what I saw:
    http://sprunge.us/STOT
Does anybody know what is happening on my machine? I'm really worried because the machines with ip addr of 111.*.*.* are from China and Taipei.
Please use a pastebin for HUGE dumps like this

What do you expect a firewall to do? You do realize that for a simple ssh and web server facing the internat you don't need a firewall, if there are no specific access requirements to the services, right? Besides, the box is NATed and the router provides a firewall.
Indeed. The fact that the box is behind a router emerged in response to my question/comment about the firewall. I never said that the router did not provide this. (Although routers do vary and anything being forwarded to the box is obviously not firewalled. Depending on the router, you might or might not be able to make the controls there as fine-grained as you could using iptables. (With the router I've got, you have very little fine-grained control so it would certainly make sense to run iptables if you wanted more control.)
I completely agree that blocking particular ips is pointless.
    @hunterthomson:
Great lesson from microsoft: if it doesn't work -- reinstall, it's all because of an angry virus. Before assuming that apache/samba is hacked, perhaps it is wise to learn about configs first...
As far as I can tell, nobody has suggested that a virus is involved. The suggestion is that a rootkit is involved. That is hardly the same. If that's the case, then learning to configure things securely is clearly wise but reinstalling is likely to be the only way to be certain the system is trustworthy simply because the system is compromised in that case. Configuring the services correctly will not do any good if there's a rootkit inside.
This is not to say that forensics is not a good idea prior to reinstalling. I guess that will depend on a whole range of factors.

  • How do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full

how do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full.. HELP!

When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.

  • Empty file picked although file have lot of data in file adapter SAP PI

    Hello All,
We are facing the weired behaviour of SAP PI file adapter channel.
In without mapping Scenario of 7.31
At some time whole file is archived properly in archive folder but in SAP PI log we can see the file size 0 bytes.
And at received side empty file will be sent.
But in actual there is lot of data in the file.
The same file triggered next time then it working fine.archived and sent as it is.
So can anybody help me for this ?what is the issue why sometime file with no data is  picked by PI?
If file is pick up by PI before it is written completely by third party then is it possible that archived file will have all data as it although processed empty ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Anant

    Hi,
    Thanks for reply.
I know this is common issue of file picking before completing the process of file writting and also i can use Msec to wait before modification check for avoiding this but
my question is how the archived folder have the file with all data that sender is sending.
So is it possible that empty file (before compete writting )is picked up by sap pi and then after completing the picking process it will archive the file that is completely written by third party in source folder.
In other way file picking & File archiving is separate process means file that is picked is not archived but once pi processed the file then it will again check the source folder and archive and delete the same file.
    Thanks

  • Display lots of Data produces error

    Hi there,
I am experiencing an issue and strongly believe will get some pointers/solution to resolve this issue over here.
I am using disco 10g with oracle 9i.
I created a report using disco. Plus. the report works fine and returns the results successfully when run with a defined set of parameter values.
However if I run the report with increased parameter values [i.e. select more customers and select more quotes] I get the error message
The application encountered an invalid state.
    - Session closed
OracleBI Discoverer Viewer was unable to find the necessary data for displaying the results of this event. Please correct any errors and try again.
What would be the possible reason for this error message. Is it because it returns lot more data for the second report than the first report with the a defined set values.
Will appreciate all your help on this issue.
    Best Regards,
    Manish

    Hi Manish
As Rod mentions this could be that you are out of memory. Memory is the single-most important resource you can give to Discoverer. If you don't have enough your system will either crash or will run dreadfully slow.
Here's some background information that might help:
As already stated, for your middle-tier, the single-most important resource is memory. CPU count is important but nowhere near as important as your available RAM. You should therefore go for the maximum RAM you can afford or at least get a machine that is capable of being extended. In the following two scenarios, let's look at a situation where we have 100 concurrent users.
The requirements change depending upon whether the 100 concurrent users will be using Plus or if there will be a mix of Plus and Viewer. I will therefore give you two scenarios. For both scenarios you will need to add the following base memory:
    Base memory:
The operating system will need 300 Mb and you will need to allocate 800 Mb for the middle-tier and AS Control components. Thus, you need 1.1 GB just to get the machine up and running.
    Scenario 1: 100 Plus users
For each Plus user you will need to have 85 Mb available. This comes to 8.5 GB to which you must add the 1.1 GB for the base memory making an intermediate total of 9.6 GB. However, this must be no more than 85% of the available memory. Thus you actually need 11.3 GB which is very close to 12 GB. Because this would give you very little room to grow, as Discoverer will, you will be ok starting with 12 GB but you should buy a machine that is capable of being extended to 16 GB. Because every 4 GB RAM needs one CPU, the machine also needs 4 CPU.
Scenario 2: 40 Plus and 60 Viewer users
Once again for each Plus user you will need to have 85 Mb available. This comes to 3.4 GB. For each Viewer user you will need to have 15 Mb available, meaning you need 900 Mb for your Viewer users. Adding these two numbers to your base memory means you have an intermediate total of 5.4 GB. Again, this must be no more than 85% of the available memory. Thus you actually need 6.4 GB which is well under an initial 8 GB. Because this gives you lots of room to grow, as Discoverer will, I would say you will be ok starting with 8 GB but you should buy a machine that is capable of being extended to 12 GB. Because every 4 GB RAM needs one CPU, 4 CPU is too high for this scenario and you should be ok to start with a 2 CPU machine, although 3 CPU would be better.
    Does this help?
    Regards
    Michael

I may have found an answer here:

They only thing I can assume is that my external hard drive was slow to start and iTunes defaulted to its old directory (see the last paragraph at the link above). However, once my external was recognized shouldn't everything have fixed itself?

It should. So they aren't shown in the Last Import smart album, right? Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

OS X can natively read NTFS of Windows, but not write to it.
Windows can't read or write to HFS+ of OSX, and that's a good thing from a security standpoint.
Ideally if you share files between operating systems you should have a FAT/MSDOS formated USB key or hard drive. (exFAT external drive if any of your files are over 4GB in size) both these formats are universal for OS X or Windows.
If you install software into Windows and OS X to read each others formats, then you have to pay to update/upgrade it deal with headaches.
If you swtich between Windows and OS X a lot, don't need full hardware performance for Windows, you may consider installing virtual machine software like VMFusion or Parallels which can take a copy of your Windows in Bootcamp and place it into OS X as a file then run that copy of Windows in a window in OS X like so.
Advantage here is you run most of your light weight Windows programs like this at the same time as OS X.
Benefit is you can run just about any Windows or Linux version and OSX server editions (not client versions)
Bootcamp only allows Windows 7, that's it now.
You'll also be interested in two fre pieces of software, Carbon Copy Cloner and Winclone on macupdate.com.
CCC clones OS X partition and Winclone clones the Bootcamp partition. Valuable for you.

  • Copy a certain row of data into the next row in a same internal table ??

    HI, guys.
May i know how to copy a certain row of data into the next row in a same internal table ?? Bcz I plan to update a certain colum of data in the row just now into another value..
    For example:-
    *at first...
    ebeln1   ebelp1   xblnr1
    ebeln2   ebelp2   xblnr2
    ebeln3   ebelp3   xblnr3
    *after that, become...
    ebeln1   ebelp1   xblnr1
    ebeln2   ebelp2   xblnr2
    ebeln2   ebelp2   xblnr4
    ebeln2   ebelp2   xblnr5
    ebeln3   ebelp3   xblnr3
    Thanks in advance.

    hi,
If you have this kind of requirement then you must be having 2 internal tables ,one existing data and 2nd from which you have to insert the records into 1st table.
    so in this case,
    loop at itab1.
      v_index = sy-tabix.
      loop at itab2 into wa where pri_key = itab1-pri_key.
      v_index = v_index + 1.
insert  wa into itab index v_index.
      endloop.
    endloop.
Using this code ,your data records similar to your 1st tables primary key records will get inserted into table.

Do you have more than one enterprise fields showing your CAD layout?
Do you wish to copy all of the them or just one of them?
Do you wish to copy the name as well as the value?
At any rate, a macro is not needed to copy the enterprise data.  You simply double click it and press CTRL+C.
See this video here, which shows me doing just that:

A macro might just complicate the matter, and force the Agent into a single option.  But let's get your answers to the above first, before we make any final decisions on the matter.

  • HI, Idid a up grade of my osx mauntain lion and it cancelled all my document, bookmarks and mailboxes it is normal? I have lost a lot of data bacons of it because i did not do the back up of all my files just the back up of my photos. . .what can i do

    HI,
Since a while I have received from apple the warning for an up grade for my Os x Mountain Lion and finally I decider to do it. . . . and since it was just an up grade I DIDN'T DO A BACK UP of all the content of my book pro because I thought it wasn't necessary . . . .but when I did it . . . . .it cancelled me all my files in documents, most of all my mail boxes in mail and most of my bookmarks in safari.
I do not understand why; since i did not change my os but just did an up grade of my existing one. . . . . .result I lost a lot of data and I do not know what to do.
Is this normal that it cancelled data in my documents folders and in others parts of my mac pro ?? ? ? . . . .ad if it is so why don't you write a warning saying that before going through  with a simple up grade  of your OS of your computer everybody should do a back up of everything it has in it ?!?!?!
    Buongiorno,
. . .ma dope averlo fat to l'up grade ho realizzato che il procedimento mi aveva cancellato tutti i file contenuti nei midi document, le mailbox che avevo create in mail e i bookmarks che avevo create in safari . . . . .

What happened isn't normal, but does demonstrate why you need a backup, preferably two.

Suppose MM has received 10 consignment of a material (Goods receipt) against a material in month of Feb-2008 from a particular vendor.
Inspection lot statistics in MCXA is updated on the basis of inspection lot generation, which is as per our requirement.
Suppose this inspection take 2 days for analysis at laboratory.
Now FI has to make payments for the month of Feb-2008 against this inspection results. They need the value of average quality parameter for the month of Feb-2008. (Average value of all quality parameter for the material of all the inspection lot which are generated in Feb-2008)
I want that QMIS should update on the basis of Inspection Lot creation date not on the basis of result recording system date.
I think there should be some configuration settings available for this purpose.

  • I have an old Mac Tower.  I need to move data from the unit to an external hard drive. What kind of hard drive do I purchase.  There is not a lot of data to be transferred.

I have an old Mac Tower.  I need to move data from the unit to an external hard drive.  What kind of of hard drive must I purchase so that it works with the Tower?  There is not a lot to transfer.

    MG,
What we might need to do is to change the question.  What computer do you plan to use the data on in the future?  For example, if you have a newer tower, just move the hard drive to the new tower.  If you want to use the data, what about an ethernet LAN to get the data over?  If you want to archive the data, how do you store the second drive?  What are your plans for the first drive?  If the new software will not recognize the old file type, the data must be exported.  Just getting files to another hard drive will not finish your journey.
As Allan said, knowing the exact model and year of your tower is important.  My suggestion is to find a user group near you.  Please post back with more information, including the name of a large city near you.
For example, our user group just experimented with a 1983 Apple IIc that predates the Mac.  It started right up, read files from 1984  and saved them from a 5.25" floppy to a 3.5" floppy.  That 3.5 floppy will go into a platinum G3 which will read PRODOS files using Apple File Exchange.  That G3, with a USB card, will allow saving the files to a USB flash drive.  But, somewhere along the way, some software has to read the file and convert it to data that is useable by current software.
