Copying a personal DVD?

I've been given a DVD burned by my friend using DVDSP, and I'm wondering how, exactly, to make a copy for myself...?
I've copied the video and audio ts files from the DVD onto my desktop (about 60mb)... but now what? I've tried copying those folders onto another DVD and buning it, but the resulting DVD didn't play. I've also tried making an image and burning that from DiskUtility, but that DVD doesn't work either.
Again, it's not a protected DVD, and honestly I thought this would be easier.. help!??

Try this:
Duplicate a CD or DVD
1. Insert the DVD/CD;
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

The easiest way is to use Disk Utility to create a disk image of the DVD; you can then burn that to a blank DVD (and indeed play it using the DVD player).
Insert your DVD. Open Disk Utility and select it in the sidebar (the disk itself, not the drive it's in.) Click 'New Image' in the toolbar.
In the dialog box which opens set 'Image Format' to 'DVD/CD Master' and 'Encryption' to 'none'. This will make an exact copy without re-compressing.
Obviously this will not work on a commercially issued DVD, only on ones you make yourself or which are not DRM protected.

I have not been able to find any information on how I can copy personal dvds to my computer and then to my iPod. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Copy and burn personal DVDs to play on TVs?

I have personal DVDs of family members that I would like to share with other family members. Looking up possible procedures I see different approaches, some of which require download of an application. None of them seem particularly simple. Any suggestions?

If you have software app such as Roxio Toast, you can copy/burn your own content (not copy-righted) from one DVD to another very easily. Simply pop in the DVD, copy it, and then burn it to another DVD. You need to be careful as the content needs to be encoded to be able to be played on DVD players. I do not know if Disk Utility can actually do that - I know it can do so on DVDs being played on other computers, but I do not know if it can encode properly to be played on DVD players.

Converting personal DVDs to format to play on Iphone - how?

I have some personal DVDs created from digital movies I've taken with my camcorder. I would like to put these movies into a format that I can watch on my Ipod and would prefer a GNU, free or shareware utility if one is avialable. I use two pieces of software that will let you copy any DVD into a format (.mp4) that will play on the iPhone or in iTunes. This seems buggy on Windows Vista, so I use my laptop with XP and it works great.
DVDFab HD Decrypter will pull the info off the DVD and put it in a directory on your computer. This takes about an hour. You can get this program at www.dvdfab.com.
XviD4PSP is the second program I use that takes the extracted data and creates the .mp4 file. This can take 12 or more hours to process, so I usually run it over night. You can get this program at www.winnydows.com.
A 1-1/2 hour movie will end up being about 700meg, which isn't too bad and it looks great on the iPhone. Once the process is done simply open the file in iTunes to add it to your library and then synch it with your phone.

I'm with Fortuny: personally I prefer Toast although it is fairly expensive. To do it with no additional software:
Insert the disc.
Navigate to Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Choose File menu > New > Disk Image from folder chose the disc.
Before pressing "Save" choose "CD/DVD Master" from the Image Format drop-down menu.
Wait for the Image to be created.
Select the Disk image in the left hand pane
Click the Burn icon ☢

Making a copy of a dvd

I created a dvd of some analog home videos using IMovie and IDVD. I would now like to make extra copies of the dvd I have made. I followed the steps outlined in Disk Utility Help. After I created the the disk image I ejected the original DVD, selected the disk image, then Burn, then inserted a blank DVD. However, after burning, DVD player cannot play the disk. The error message I get is SUPPORTED DISK NOT AVAILABLE. I've repeated this process three times and now have three unplayable DVDs. What am I doing wrong? I am using MAC OS 10.5.8 on my Imac.

Sometimes the drives are sensitive to the certain brands of DVDs. Exactly what DVD's are you using? I've found the easiest (it's time consuming though) method is to create a folder on the desktop then copy the original DVD's files and pasting them into the folder. After all are copied select all the files and folders (Command A) the right click and select Burn. I've also found it's best to have a bland DVD already in the drive when I select Burn.

Copy of Install DVD Question

So I've read the topic about making a copy of the Family Pack DVD for other people that went in on it with you, and I understand it. However, I'm wondering that if I make a copy and there are still 3 installs left, could they, unbeknownst to me, give it to somebody else have it work for them or would it only work once?

Assuming you are not kidding about a copy of a DVD somehow knowing it has been used once and then refusing to be a DVD any more, there is a risk they'd copy the copy and share it so if you have family members like that don't copy it at all.
Note if the others that went in on it are not immediate family you cannot use the family license at all.

How to convert my personal DVDs to be edited in Final Cut Pro 7?

I am working on a project that need to edit my personal DVDs in Final Cut Pro 7, but what i need to do first is rip the DVD to a Final Cut Pro 7 compatible format, to which format should i convert the DVD? I am using iSkysoft iMedia Converter for Mac, it has many output formats. It is a little difficult to decide the right one.
Would you please help? If possible, please tell me the codec/ resolution/ bitrate . thanks in advance!

I understand what format DVDs are. My suggestion is - if you generated these DVDs, you must have the source footage. Why not use that?
I'd suggest you open the manual and start with the getting started section and work through any tutorials that came with your version. This program is complex and you need a fundamental understanding of more stuff than we can cover in this forum.

After using video capture device to copy VHS to DVD, burnt DVD will play on computer but not on DVD player. Tech support for the VCD said my HP DVD burning software has to burn "DVD Video and not DVD data" and to check with HP. How can i check myself.

I recommend trying CDBurnerXP for burning video CD's. I have been using it for years without a glitch. I use it mainly for burning ISO's, but have used it for all types. Please let us know if it works or not.

If the DVD was made on a Mac and they're JPEGs they should openable in Preview from the DVD. If so, just select them and drag them into a new folder to copy onto your hard drive. If the Mac doesn't recognize the DVD and it doesn't mount in the finder window or on the desktop, I'd say you're out of luck. But there are work arounds possible and too many to discuss without knowing a lot more about your setup and the DVD.

Because you did it wrong? It's hard to know unless you tell us what you did.
What should work:
Select the photos you want to share
File -> Export and export them to a folder on the desktop. Burn that to the disk with the Finder.

Why is the LaCie copy silent on DVD player?

After several frustrating hours (LaCie's readme only tells me how to connect to LaCie's readme--it should say, "if you are reading this don't bother to read this.") I finally burned a DVD. It was made from a videocam film that we had copied to a DVD. The sound was very bad, but as it was a souvenir film we want the sound.
On my computer, all works well but when played it on the television the video plays but it is silent. Did I miss something in the Burning Process?
I was so proud, but now I'm lost again.

I think the seller did mean creating the Toshiba recovery disk that contains an image of factory settings. In case you cant start Windows anymore or the HDD must be replaced you can use this disk to restore Windows with all drivers and tools. With other words you get factory settings back, the same settings as you purchased the notebook so its very useful and easy.
You can create this disk if you start Toshiba recovery media creator that is preinstalled on your computer. Depending on the installation you need some blank DVD mediums. I would recommend high quality mediums, Typ: DVD-R from Verbatim or TDK. They work good and other users here can recommend them too.
Last but not least you should also read your user manual. It contains interesting information about this and other interesting things. Its also preinstalled on your notebook. :)
But its really great the seller gave you a hint about this. If you check other forum threads you will read about lot of other users they forget to create this disk and are not able to restore factory settings if Windows failed to start.

Select the movie to sync (click in box next to the name) in the movies tab in iTunes while your iPad is connected to your computer, with iTunes running and then sync the movie to the iPad.
Make sure you are using the correct iTunes account when you sync as well and that you have authorized your computer.
