Copying a Windows CD

I have a Windows application install disk that I want to duplicate for backup purposes. I have copied it with Disk Utility (creating an image and then burning it). The resultant disk looks fine with Finder, but if I move it to a Windows machine, or if I look at it with VM Fusion on the same machine it was written on, then it appears to be blank. What is going on here (I've tried two disks) ?

tonydenson wrote:
I would copy it on a Window Box to be sure. Just as I would not copy a Mac CD or DVD on a Window >Box. It might work, but why not use the proper machine to start with?
It's just that I have a house full of Macs and all my PCs are at work 200 miles away. However, I do run VM Fusion on my Mac so can you suggest CD copying software that will work under that - I assume that I wouldn't have a format problem then.
That should work fine. It's not the optical drive, it's not really even the OS, it's that the Finder/DU burner is not a full-fledged burner. I am not knocking it, but burning is just a small item, like an add-on. That's the reason many of us use Toast.
I have not used the XP built-in burner in years. Even on the PCs I used a 3rd party roaster - Nero, whatever. If you have any R/W CDs, try them - at least you don't lose anything if a coaster pops out I always use R/W CDs and DVDs when trying out new things.

I have a copy of Windows 7, and I am trying to bring up Boot Camp on my MacBook with Snow Leopard. But my Snow Leopard install disk is too old for Windows 7, so attempted Boot Camp install of drivers fails.
I have hand-installed the NVidia graphics driver, and I have keyboard, minimal trackpad, and hardwire to internet all working. So the WIndows machine is usable. But I am hurting for wi-fi, better trackpad, and whatever else is delivered by Boot Camp. I can't use any of the Boot Camp upgrades because I do not have XP or Vista.

    Dear Nathan,
Many thanks. To the best of my memory, that is how I got where I am today. Initially I had one failed setup, then discovered compatibility mode and ran using it.  The result was not an obvious failure, but something was not there because not only were some drivers missing (wi-fi, trackpad, ...) but (much to my disappointment) the 3.1 update would not run. It complained that 3.0 wasn't there. If I hardwired to my home network, the machine would do almost everything I wanted, but the graphics were slow and clumsy. That is when I hunted around for the NVidia driver and downloaded it from NVidia. And that is where I stand now.
My son found this link http://www.simplehelp.net/2009/01/15/using-boot-camp-to-install-windows-7-on-you r-mac-the-complete-walkthrough/
which has instructions claiming to do the install straight to Win 7 without using compatibility mode.
Given that my clumsy efforts to patch things up have probably necessitated a Win 7 deinstall and reinstall to test either your plan or the one my son found, I am inclined to sit tight for a couple of days to see  how much I can learn.
I appreciate your interest in  this problem, and if you are up for reading the process at the link my son found and commenting, I would be grateful.
In any case, many thanks, Paul

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use Boot Camp. There's a Boot Camp Support Community where everybody uses Boot Camp. You should also post this question there.

This is not correct solution. I have fresh/new copy of Windows 7 64 bit and I have the same problem.
Autorun only shows the Apple Bonjour service.  It started when try to sync more than one iphone over WiFi. I have two iphones and an iPad. I turned off syncing over WiFi and still has high CPU utilization. One of the CPU's is pegged at 100%.  It is the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe process.

For the record, I then followed the suggestion of MarcDCMB in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4291206 of just manually restarting the Apple Mobile Device service in Windows services.msc once each time after starting iTunes and the service no longer hogs CPU after that service restart.  Not too painful as a work-around, and apparently an effective one, but clearly not a solution to the problem.  Again, as above, all the other solutions didn't work for me and I have no conflicting software as far as I can tell. So you'd have to say this Apple's problem.
Also FTR, I am still on the 5.2.0.6 version of the Apple Mobile Device Support MSI and I don't know if that is relevant to this work-around working but my sense is that it is NOT relevant.  I'll report back on this thread if I re-upgrade and the problem returns in spite of the service-restart approach.

  • Can I use a copy of Windows XP?

I burned a copy of Windows XP from my original disc... and I'm glad I did, because I lost the original. Can I use my copy to install onto Boot Camp?

I'm pretty sure the disk will function. The real question is do you have the Product Key numbers. That is what your money goes to when you purchase an operating system disk. Without the numbers you cannot activate the installed software. And of course you can only use the numbers on one machine.

  • Using one copy of Windows to install via boot camp and on a virtual machine?

I have a copy on windows 7 coming in the post and I was wondering if it is possible to install windows 7 via boot camp when I want to do something more memory intensive such as gaming and also install it on a virtual machine such as virtual box just for other regular stuff. Also would this be possible using one copy of windows and one licence key?

Then you need Parallels or Fusion to link to a native Windows partition.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Windows 8 also works, but only with compatible Macs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US Note that you can also install Windows 8 in non-supported Macs by Apple, but you will not be able to install the Windows support software.
As you have got Mac OS X Snow Leopard and after checking that your Mac supports Windows 8, you need to download the Windows support software from this website > http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1638

Yeah.  I remember when I had that board.  I found the best SATA ports were the Promise ones, but...
What do you think, Tiresmoke?  You had the same board too if I'm not mistaken.

  • Running OSX 10.7.5 and have a copy of windows 8

I'm running 10.7.5 and have a copy of windows 8 that I need running for school. I have downloaded the new boot camp driver files, but am running into problems during boot camp assistant. Even though I have boot camp 5 files, when I run assistant I still get boot camp 4 running, which only allows WIndows 7 installation. It seems like I either need to:
    (1) Buy windows 7, run boot camp 4, upgrade to boot camp 5 from windows, upgrade to windows 8
    (2) Upgrade to OSX 10.8 *which I sincerely do not want to do*
If anyone has any tips on how to get windows 8 running without having to spend money on an opterating system I won't ever use (windows 7) or really don't want (OSX 10.8) I'd really appreciate it.
I have confirmed that my machine will run windows 8, and the copy I received was a 64 bit. So I'm fairly sure my only problem is boot camp at this point.

which darn mac model year? what is it about ML you don't want or like that lion does? btw, I still use Lion, but I don't have a choice
Take a grain of salt and do what you want and use Windows 8 and format / create a partition.
you can use BC 5.x 'maybe' though it seems Apple has taken rather draconian steps to block things on Macs, you probably can while in Windows 8.
you may hve to edit or bypass the top level "SETUP.exe" which may be checking the Mac IDs.
    10.8 is $19 and why not ?
You install ML on external drive.
you clone your system to external drive
Either way, $19. When you are done you clone and restore Lion back.
And you get the BC 5,x drivers from 10.8.4 (and the new BCA too)

PLEASE anyone help? I am not a techie person and i dont know how to fix this problem. Thank you and regards.

Now, this is pretty complicated for me to understand but one thing is just clear, this is counterfeit. I have asked help from other Windows7 forums and all they tell me is to report this to Microsoft.
MANY people have counterfeit installs - very few of them actually know it! And im one of them.
A large proprtion of counterfeiting is done b vendors who can make a quick buck by buying/building OS-free machines, and installing 'Ultimate' to unsuspecting purchasers.
Another thing is that I cannot see any COA sticker anywhere my unit.
I used a keyfinder softwareto find my product key but it's not valid for activation since the key used in here is a Default Key. is is getting worst.
I am not very good with this technology stuff and im getting really frustrated.
Is it possible that if i upgrade my system to Windows 8, and use a legal purchase, will i be able to get rid of this "Windows 7 Build 7601 this copy of Windows is not genuine." thing???????
    Please help. Thank you.

  • Where can I buy a retail copy of Windows?

I just bought Parallels Desktop 8 From Amazon, and thought I was also ordering a copy of windows seven. But when the package arrived, Windows 7 turned out to be an OEM version with the warnings all over it saying that it had to be preinstalled on a computer and only used with having also bought a computer. I haven't ever bought a Microsoft product before, and I assume that that operating system is similar to the OS that comes with a Mac computer. In other words, you can only use it with that one computer. I returned it to Amazon for a refund, I don't really understand why they even have that for sale if you can't actually use it. In any case, can anyone tell me where I can purchase a retail version of Windows 7 or Windows 8 that I can install on my Mac to work with parallels?

This is a link to what I bought on Amazon:

Has the following product description. When I first ordered this I didn't scroll down far enough to see this description, only saw it on the box when it came and I didn't understand it. But after your explanation, I think it means I can use it. Would appreciate your guidance.

  • Re: "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message

Hello, this morning the following message appeared as my wallpaper:
    "Windows 7
    Build 7600
This copy of Windows is not genuine"
Windows came pre-installed on my laptop (i.e. is genuine).
I searched Microsoft, their solution is to run rsop.msc - when I try to do this, I am given the message 'Windows cannot find 'rsop.msc''.
    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi
Toshiba preinstalled image is already activated and does not need to be activated again
Also the serial key at the bottom of the unit will not help you. It belongs to the image (OEM version) which is already installed and activated

  • "This copy of Windows isn't genuine"

Yesterday I attempted to update my Windows Vista, but when the computer restarted an error message appeared AFTER I logged into Windows. There was a black screen and just three lines on the bottom right:
    Windows Vista (TM)
    Build 6000
This copy of Windows isn't genuine
I was able to get to Mac by pressing the option button on startup, but I cannot access Windows. I don't know what happened, because I've been using Windows for almost two years and now it's telling me my copy isn't "genuine". How can I remedy this problem? Thanks!

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
this can only be resolved by Microsoft.
    Have a look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WindowsGenuineAdvantage and here http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en/genuinevista/thread/ff4e57b0-7ff8-4f06-8d5 3-cc3f5394fb94
Might be that giving Microsoft a call and ask for a new activation key is the only way out.
    Good Luck

    Hi,
Few days ago I got the blue screen and after reboot I got the message ""This copy of windows is not genuine.Build 7601". Error code 0x8007007E.
I tried to restore the system to a previous state but it didn't work.
Now, after rebooting I log in and all I get is a black screen with a small text in the right low corner as mentioned. No other command works.
How can I recover the system without reinstalling windows?

What is the difference between a purchased recovery disk and the ones that I created?
I don't understand why HP installs a different key than the label one. Why bother to place a label with a product key that is not real? I would have knew about all this twist I would have bought a proper Windows licence (at least I would have had the installation kit) and laptop without all the HP useless applications (which proves that if you are in trouble they cannot help at all).
    Thank again,

    1. Recovery discs from HP perform the same recovery but take longer to do the recovery than the one's you make yourself.
"HP shipped media covers multiple series and many different configurations. (One set of discs may cover a series that has 10 or even many more unique configurations)
Because of this the process first lays down a 'base' image, and then customizes the image for that specific configuration.
The F11 and customer created media recoveries are specific to that model PC, and are quick because it is laying down an image that is designed only for one configuration.
The last phase of the HP shipped recovery  is installing and customizing the software for that specific model. This last phase can take a very long time, can have popup windows (that should not be clicked), and can involve multiple reboots. Specifically around 12%-19% on the display is where this occurs.
Please don't interact with the PC during this time.
Don't click on any popups unless the system completely stops for significant time.Unless there is a unknown error, the recovery process is actually designed to handle this.
For notebooks, this process can take 4-6 hours on certain configurations."
    2. All OEM PC manufacturers use what is called a Volume License Key (VLK), it makes it much easier to install and activate 10's of millions of Windows installations. By Law they have to give your a Single User License key because you paid for the OS when you purchased the PC, so they put that key on the sticker, this is an Industry wide standard.

  • "Build 6002: This copy of Windows is not genuine"

    Hi everyone..
I have had my TOSHIBA Satellite L40-139 for over a year. It was bought from PC World and came with a pre-installed version of Windows Vista Home Premium. I do not have any of the disks that came with the laptop but the Windows installed is genuine.
I went to install Vista Service Pack 2 having downloaded it. I restarted my laptop only to find my desktop wallpaper had gone and been replaced with a black background and the following in the bottom-right corner of the desktop:
    Windows Vista (TM)
    Build 6002
This copy of Windows is not genuine
This was followed by a pop-up window with two options, 'Activate Now' or 'Activate Later', followed by an error pop-up that says Windows must be re-installed as an "Unauthorised change has been made...please insert CD or DVD". If I press 'Activate Now' it just goes to another pop-up that says I can contact TOSHIBA. If I click the link it just goes to a standard 'Help' screen!
I don't know what to do..I have the COA product key sticker intact and have tried entering it but it just comes back with various errors. It's as if as soon as I installed service pack 2 I've had problems. Again I do not have Vista or a toshiba recovery disk (I don't even know if it came with one). I have tried restoring Windows but it just returns with the same screens!
    HELP!!
PS. Is the Toshiba support line a free number? Does anyone know a number that is free to call from mobiles? (I do not have a landline).

    > As per my first post I do not have a Recovery DVD as mine didn't come with one..I take it I must be doing something wrong and there is another way to sort this? Even the Toshiba product spec states that no recovery DVD comes with it.
As per my first posting I wrote clearly that new notebooks dont come with recovery discs but with HDD recovery only and you must create recovery disc alone. Everything is described in Users manuals document. If you dont read it and dont pick up info about your notebook I cannot help you about it.
If you cannot start HDD recovery installation as described in Toshiba document then something must be screwed up. Why? I dont know.
You can try method posted by Paolo but if this will not help you must install OS again or activate preinstalled version. If you dont have possibility to install original recovery image you can order new disc under https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx or try to clarify situation with nearest Toshiba service. Call them, explain the situation and maybe you will get one for free.
Sorry but I dont know what else to say.
