Copying all mail and folders from one mac to another

I have a pop account that loads to my imac. all the mail is sorted into folders and kept there till needed. is it possible to take all the mail on my imac and transfer it to my macbookpro so i have all my files sorted when i go on trips? can i either upload it or do it through .mac? i thought i could just archive the whole thing like in entourage and reopen it, but i haven't found a way to do that yet. Can you help?

All your mail and mail attaachments are in /Users/inahayes/Library/Mail and /Users/inahayes/Library/Mail Downloads (unless you set up your Mail downloads to be saved somewhere else). While not hte most elegant of solutions, conceivably, you could manually afp-mount one computer onto the other's desktop (⌘k or ⇧⌘k in Finder) and drag those two folders to the corresponding /Users/inahayes/Library folder on the MBP. When you return from your trip, do the same thing in the opposite direction. However, an imap account would eliminate this problem, if you have the ability to migrate to an imap account.

  • How do I move all the apps and podcasts from one mac to another mac?

What is the best way to move all the apps and iTunes content (songs, podcasts, etc) from one Mac to another Mac?  I am switching to a newer computer.  I connect (with cables) an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2 to the old computer for syncing.

    Take a look at this.
iTunes: How to move your music to a new computer
When I recently got a new MacBook, I set it up with Times Machine using a backup of the old computer. It could not have been easier. If you use Time Machine - that will copy the contents of the old Mac to the new Mac - iTunes library included. You will have to authorize the new Mac in iTunes - Store>Authorize this computer.
There are ways of copying the purchased contents from the iPad to the new iTunes library as well if you need to do that. But as long as you have the old Mac - copying the library and putting it on the new Mac makes the most sense.

  • HT201250 Can I copy a time machine backup from one mac to another?

I have two Mac Book Pros that I use for work - I have one at home and one at work. I'd like to copy the contents and setup from my work Mac to my home Mac using a time machine backup, and then continue to use the time machine backup back at work. I.e. the time machine would only be used with the home Mac to copy over the contents and setup of my work Mac.
Can I just do a straight time machine back up in my 2nd (home) mac, or will this override the back up I have from the 1st (work) machine?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Of course. Note that you can restore a Time Machine backup on all the Macs you want, always that the Mac uses the same or a newer OS X version than the one that had the Mac you used to make this backup.
Also, you can back up different computers to the same Time Machine drive. In this case, Time Machine will create different folders in your Time Machine drive for each computer, so one Mac backup won't conflict with the other computer backup.
To restore a backup, use Migration Assistant. Just connect the Time Machine drive, open Migration Assistant (it's in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps to restore the backup onto the computer

  • Export mail folders from one Mac to another?

Is there a way to export my folders and it's contents from my iMac to my MacBook?
I tried import but it's not the same to have my mail I want to keep in an import folder alonside my main account on the macbook retrieving everything from my pop account so i'll still have to delete.
So instead of me having to delete old mail which I already have done on my G5, will I have to do the exact process for my MacBook and sift through 1000's of e-mails retrived from my Pop Account or can I export all of my hard work from Mail on my G5?

I don’t understand what you say, but Mail stores most preferences and all account settings in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (except the passwords, which are stored in the keychain). Everything else, including all your messages and mailboxes, is stored within the ~/Library/Mail/ folder.
If both computers are running the same major version of Mac OS X, copying these (the preferences file and the entire Mail folder) from one computer to the other is all you need to do in order to have an exact copy of all your messages, mailboxes and Mail settings on both computers.
In order to avoid potential permissions issues, copy the files operating on the destination computer and while logged in as the user that’s going to use them. Also, be sure Mail isn’t running on either computer while doing that.
In order to avoid accidentally losing any data (which might happen as a result of copying files in the wrong direction by mistake, for example), instead of overwriting the ~/Library/Mail folder on the destination right away, move it to the Desktop before transferring the files, and delete it only after making sure that you don’t miss anything.
If what you want to do is something else, please clarify.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Transfer iphoto photos and videos from one mac to another and retain all the titles and face names

Can I transfer an event of multiple photos that are in my iPhoto application on my macbook air (mid 2012) to my iPhoto application on my iMac ( mid 2011), and have the photos, after the transfer to the iMac, also retain all titles and other identifying data that had been added while on the macbook air?  Using 10.9.5 OSX on both.  Using iPhoto 9.5.1 on both.  I did try this: drag and drop this event to a new folder on the desktop of the macbook air, the using Airdrop, drop copy of this event folder into the iMac.  After the iMac displayed this file as completed received into the iMac, I then opened iPhoto to import this folder into iPhoto.  The photos were imported, but without any identifying info, only the usual tag, such as IMG_4368. (Incidentally, the event of photos on the macbook air includes photos and videos taken on an iPhone 5c, and photos and videos taken on a nikon D3100.  The photos that I transferred using Airdrop did show the camera meta data when Iclicked on the "info" button in iPhoto on the iMac) (Why did I do this in the first place? - While on a trip, I knew I would need to off-load photos and videos form my low capacity iPhone to the portable macbook air in order to free up space on the iPhone, and thought it would be easy enough to transfer to the high capacity iMac later.)  Thanks for any input.  Signed: No longer quite so "new-to-apple", but always trying to learn

Moving photos from old iMac to memory stick
         Open Photos in iPhoto
Select All photos (which happens to be 2193 at the moment in my case)
Drag Photos on to the Memory Stick icon
That is not moving an iPhoto Library. It will not retain Faces, Titles and lots of other metadata. That's moving the Previews (only) from one Library to a thumb drive and then importing them to another Library.
    To move a Library:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
I'll ask the same question that I posed
above - can you do this for Mail and iTunes?
Most certainly not. You need to ask on those forums for the correct way to move those databases.

  • Can I copy over an iPod game from one mac to another?

I bought a game at home on my laptop. I sync my ipod to my Mac at work so my question is this. Can I locate the file on my laptop and then copy it over and import it into my itunes library at work. In the past, I used Podworks to copy games from my iPod to my other computer, but recently Podworks has stopped working and the makers don't reply to my emails (word of warning to anyone reading this...don't buy Podworks!) - so I'd rather not have to buy software to copy over the files.
If I sync my games with the mac at work it just deletes iQuiz and all my high scores & history on other games I've purchased.
    Cheers,
    Smartmart

Use the instructions in this article to locate the games, and then move them to the new computer; these will have an extension of ipg.

  • Copying an Iphoto Album&Project from one Mac to another

I have Iphoto 08 on both a macbook running 10.4.11 and IMAC running 10.5.1.
I was using the macbook to download and store all pictures until I got the IMAC.
I copied the Iphoto library to an external harddrive that is now attached to the IMAC and am accessing that library(option) key when launching Iphoto.
I was traveling with the laptop taking and downloading a lot more photos, while my wife was creating some albums and calender projects on the IMAC.
Now that I'm back I want to bring the new events from the laptop on to the IMAC or save the albums and projects on to the laptop so I can reback up the entire photo library (~18,000) photos. Is there an easy way to copy an album/project from one iphoto library to another or would it be simpler to copy new events?

You can do this best and most easily with iPhoto Library Manager

  • How do I transfer all music and videos from one computer to another?

I need to transfer my music and videos that are in itunes from my laptop to my new desktop, and I dont want to lose anything because when I update my ipod it will be takin off, right? Please tell me how I go about doing this, thanks a bunch!!

There are a number of things you could do. One would be to network the to computers and transfer your iTunes folder from one to another. You can also use your iPod as a hard drive and move the folder with it though that would be considerably slower than computer to computer. Here are a few links that may help you out:

This article describes moving your music to another drive on the same computer but could be adapted to moving between networked computers: Moving your iTunes Music Folder
Also If you are using the iPod in manual update mode, your iPod is safe from being accidentally erased when you connect to iTunes on a different computer. Change the setting before connecting it to your new PC:

  • Copying Mail folders from one Mac to another

I'm consolidating my iMac and laptop, and keeping just the MacBookPro. Mostly, everything's gone smoothly: I networked the two with an ethernet cable, dragged the relevant iMac folders into the Public folder, and copied them onto the laptop.
But now there's a glitch. I would like to keep an old email folder. I exported the folder from Mail, put it in the Public folder, and, on the laptop, tried to drag it over to the relevant folder. No dice. "Items can’t be copied to “XXXXX” because you don’t have permission to read them."
I went into Get Info, and changed the permissions for the folder, and every item in it, to "Read & Write."
But I still get the same message.
    What should I try next?

Write permission is irrelevant. The user you're connecting as via File Sharing must have read access for the files. Probably you're connecting as Guest, so that means "everyone" must have read access.
