Copying an iPhoto library on an iMac to Aperture on a mbp

Anyone have a suggestion for copying my big iPhoto library on an iMac to Aperture on my Mbp?

If you want to have the iPhoto library on the iMac and that Aperture library on the MBP then copy the whole iPhoto library over and then use Aperture to import it. You can then keep, or delete, the iPhoto library. What you can't do is keep them is sync easily.

  • I want to copy my iphoto library from my iMac to my new Macbook Pro.

I am having a lot of difficulty copying my existing iphoto library from our imac to our new macbook pro.  We have the two computers set up through Time Machine.  I tried using dropbox and though I was successful until I tried to click on the thumbnails of some of the pics and only got a black image and a "!". The pics that would open could not be edited.  When I look at permissions I show that every category are read and write ( I changed them all to try and resolve this).  When I pull up info on the macbook about the library it still shows the imac extension on the library.  Don't know if that is a problem or not.  Tried to copy the files again and it stopped mid process saying I did not have permission?!  Both computers are running Lion.  This permission thing is making me crazy.  What am I missing?  We don't need restricted permission on either computer.. it's our house not a business w/ employees!!

Why don't you copy the library to a flash drive and then copy to the other Mac?

  • How can I transfer/copy my entire iPhoto library from one iMac to another iMac whilst keeping all the folders and subfolders intact?

We recently purchased a new iMac for our office (8 GB memory, 2.7 processor, version 10.9.2) and we need to copy the iPhoto library from our other iMac (version 10.9.4) onto the new one. The photos are essential for our work and there are around 53,000 of them all organised into folders and subfolders and then the photos are manually ordered within the albums.
We have tried connecting the computers but when we tried to access the iPhoto library on the new iMac it says that iPhoto is locked and we do not have permission to view it. We updated iPhoto on the old iMac as we thought that might be the problem but the message still appears. We've been advised to use an external hard drive but we're worried that will corrupt the organisation of the library. We have also been told not to do it over AirDrop / the Server because of the sheer quantity of photos.
Any advice on how to safely do this would be much appreciated.

No idea exactly what you did
    if you followed the instructions
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
then you have exactly the same thin on your new system that you had on the old
If you do something differently - like import the library instead of simply opening it - then it will not work
did you dimply drag the iPhoto library from the pictures folder of the old machine to the pictures folder of the new machine and then launch iPhoto on the new machine?
and to help it is important to use word correctly since that is the only communications method we have - in iPhoto folders do not contain photos - you view photos in events and you can organize them using albums (which view photos) and folders (which hold either albums or other folders - folders never have photos in them) so your description of the problem is not at all clear since it uses folders incorretly

  • I own a MacBook Pro and an iMac. How can I copy my iPhoto library from my MacBook to the iMac?

I own a 13" MacBook Pro and a 27" iMac and I have different iPhoto libraries for each one of them.
How can I copy the iPhoto library from the MacBook to the iMac without losing the pictures I have on the iMac library?
Is it possible to merge the libraries?
Can I do this without using an external HDD? (e.g. connecting them through an ethernet cable?)
    Thanks for your help!

    1. By eirher a: renaming one of the Libraries or b: copying them to another folder
    2. If you have Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later you can merge libraries with Aperture.
Otherwise the only way to merge Libraries is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
    3. Yes.

  • How can I copy my iPhoto library from my MacBook Pro to my IMac

I use my 13" MBP in my van for business and store my job photos on it using iPhoto. I would like to keep a copy of my entire MBP iPhoto library on my iMac also.
I do have a 2tb time capsule that I use to back up both computers. Is there a way to connect the two units and copy the complete library from the MBP to the iMac, without losing any content. Will all my albums be listed exactly as they are on the MBP. The library contains 19,000 + photos , or about 23 gbs of data.
I just recently made the switch to all Apple gear and love it, but I do need some assistance with this matter. Thanks
    Mark

Sure - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the MBP to the pictures folder of the iMac - launch iPhoto on the iMac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • I have Elements 13 (I have the hard copy) installed on my iMac using Yosemite. I do all my iPhoto work on an external drive where I have copied my iPhoto Library, can I also install Elements 13 on my external harddrive or drag Elements 13 over from my iMa

I have Elements 13 (I have the hard copy) installed on my iMac using Yosemite. I do all my iPhoto work on an external drive where I have copied my iPhoto Library, can I also install Elements 13 on my external harddrive or drag Elements 13 over from my iMac so that I can do work with Elements 13 via the exteranl hard drive? Thanks tb

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

  • Copying iPhoto library to new iMac

I got my new 27" iMac today (yeah!) and am in the process of moving things over from my old iMac, including my iPhoto library. I am following the instructions here - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4063828?start=0&tstart=0 - to do that and the first part involving making a copy of my iPhoto library on my old machine into a public folder went smoothly.
Next I tried to copy the iPhoto library from the public folder to my new computer's picture folder via home sharing and got the error message "Items can't be copied to Pictures because you don't have permission to read them."
Any ideas how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks,
    JK

I tried the direct drag solution and I'm getting the same message back. From digging around the web it appears it may have something to do w/ the fact that the two computers have different versions of iPhoto '11 running. My new computer is running 9.4.2 and the old is running 9.2.3. Both are updated so I'm guessing the difference in versions has to do w/ me running Mountain Lion on the new computer and Snow Leopard on the old one.
Still open to any ideas folks have for solving this issue,
    JK

  • Can I copy the iPhoto Library to a different user on the same computer?

I have spent a lot of time organizing my iPhoto library.
My wife also has a user account on the iMac. She would like the iPhoto library I currently have, but (for many reasons) we do not want to share the same library.
Another words, I want to copy my iPhoto library to her side, then both maintain independent libraries.
Can I copy the iPhoto Library icon (in the Pictures folder) on my side to the the shared folder, then delete and replace her iPhoto Library file with mine in her Pictures folder? Or is there something about how the library is set up that will cause problems if I copy my iPhoto Library to her side as well?
    Thanks,
    -Lee

    TD,
Thanks. I deleted her iPhoto Library, and replaced it with mine. I did hold down option and command the first time I opened iPhoto as you suggested. However, it did not ask me anything. It just opened as I might normally expect it to.
The library works perfectly, it is definitely my library that copied over.
Should I be worried that it did not ask me anything (like about rebuilding or repairing library permissions)?
    Thanks,
    -Lee

  • I am trying to transfer my photos from old mac to new mac.  I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!  What happened?

And how do I turn off FACES?

I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!
According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac
    That is it

  • How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data in the packet cannot be read from or written to"?

How can I back up the iPhoto library when iPhoto won't open and I can't simply copy the iPhoto library packet because "some of the data canny be read from or written to"?

Regarding not being able to open iPhoto.  As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Were you able to create a new library?
If so then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired.
Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Is it possible to copy the iphoto library and albums from a G5 to a macpro

I would like to copy my iphoto library and albums from a G5 10.5.8 iphoto 8 to a macpro 10.6.2 with iphoto 9. I would like all the photos and albums to appear in the macpro just as they were in the G5. I have vantecs ezshare adapter that allows you to drag files between two computers mac or windows. Copying photos should not be a problem but its the albums I want to go with the photos and appear in iphoto 9 on the macpro.

iPhoto '09 will open and convert any previous version of the iphoto library - if it is working correctly on the old system it should convert
Firewire target mode is a good way to transfer the iPhoto library - make the connection and drag the entire iPhoto library at one intact as a single entity to the new computer (put it on the desktop or somewhere so as not to mess up what you have done - depress the option key and launch iPhoto on the new system and select the library you just copies (be sure not to select the one on the old computer - you do not want to convert it - conversion is a one way operation) - it should open and convert and be ready to use - then you can quit iPhoto and place it where you want and do the option launch again to tell iPhoto where it is - and do the option launch any time you want to switch between multiple libraries

  • I copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and all the event windows are black. Once you click on a square the photos are still there. How do I fix that?

I copied my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and the event windows show up black.
The photos are still there once I click on an event but they don't show in the window.
My next step is to delete the iPhoto library from the internal memory to free some memmory space but I don't want to do this until I see that the library works fine on the external hard drive.
    How do I fix that?

Hold down the "option" + "command" keys and launch iPhoto.
    Select the "Rebuild Thumbnails" choice.
