Copying backup from Panther onto a Tiger machine

Ok, I have gotten a replacement Mac for my Dual 2.5, a Quad 2.5 (long story) Anyway, before I sent my old machine away, I created a exact copy of my hardrive onto an external. Now that my new computer is in, I want to get my old files and apps back.
How do I got about this? Just drag and drop from the firewire drive onto the new computer? My old machine had Panther and the new one has Tiger, will this be an issue when copying profiles?
thanks in advance for the help!

The new machine can't boot into 10.3. However, you can use the migration assistant to move the old data over:

  • Can I restore time machine backup from Panther 10.3.9 to Lion 10.7?

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade my old mac running Panther 10.3.9 to a new Mac running Lion before it fails on me.
Can I simply restore a Time Machine backup from Panther to Lion? Will my applications come across and function normally?
Let me know if you need any specific names of apps.

No your applications will not run on an Intel Mac running Lion.  Macs running Panther 10.3.9 were PPC processors.  Lion has no support for these old Applications  Leopard and Snow Leopard supported some old PPC Applications using Rosetta

  • Can I manualy transfer emails from Panther Mail to Tiger Mail ?

Hi I'd like to grab my previous emails that were in a Panther iBook !
I made a backup from my old iBook (before selling it) of the "Mailboxes" folder, and all the "POP-user@domain" folders. With everything inside.
I copied manually all the "*.boxes", except for the "Outbox.mbox" from the old the "Mailboxes" folder to the new "/Home/Library/Mail/Mailboxes" folder.
I get the mailboxes but can not retrieve the old emails. They are all empty.
Can anyone tell me if I'm missing something.
I did this cause I sold that iBook 6 month ago. Thanks !
Mac Mini Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   BootCamp (Windows XP SP2)

Tiger Mail uses a different mbox filing format than previous Mail.app versions and I don't believe a manual transfer will work.
Try using the Import Mailboxes feature instead choosing "Other" instead of Mail for OS X.

  • Can I restore backup from another mac with time machine?

I would like to restore files from a TM backup from another Mac - is this possible? Thanks.

I'm not sure I know how to help. I use OS X Server's Time Machine services from a Mac Mini to do my back ups to a drive connected to that server. I have the same user account on one MBP Retina that does not do back ups as another MBP Retina that DOES back ups. However, I can't even open the sparse bundle from the one that doesn't do back ups of the one that does (if that makes sense).
You might try and see if this link helps. This guy was the TM guru around here. He might have addressed a solution to what you're trying to do.

  • Uploading backup from iPod onto iPhone

Does uploading the backup for my previous iPod touch onto my new iPhone 4s cause the phone to lose/forget its capabilities.  I lost my entire contact list from the phone and am worried that there's more missing I don't know about...

No, it does not.... but relying on a single device for storage of contacts is not very smart.
Contacts are designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer or a cloud service like iCloud, Google/Gmail, or Exchange.

  • PC suite won't show/copy SMS from E75 onto PC

    Hi everyone
I have an E75 connected via USB to my PC running Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2 and PC Suite 6.83.14.1
When I try to copy my SMS to the PC by clicking "messages", it only shows me the MMS, but not hthe SMS in the folders - regardless of whether I go to "Inbox", my folders or sent messages.
I don't get an error message or anything - I just don't see the SMS.
Does anyone know what this problem may be due to?
    Thanks, M.

    Hi funkyblue,
If you are trying to transfer backup-ed data from Nokia 3120c to 6700, Are you getting something like
This backup file has been made from a different phone model than the currently connected phone.  Thus the imported data is not necessarily an exact copy of the original phone contents(differences can occur, for example, in contact details).
    One work around
In Nokia 3120 Classic, switch on the bluetooth, Menu > Settings > Sync and Backup > Phone Switch
You can select the data  you want to transfer from Nokia 3120 classic to Nokia 6700
    {I dont have 6700 may be it could be similar to Nokia 7510, i guess}
In Nokia 7510, Menu > Settings > Sync and Backup > Phone switch
Since its bluetooth operation, it will take some time

  • Time Machine - Backup from One Ext HD to Another Ext HD?

I'm sure this has been asked before but my searches have come up empty.
I'm currently setup on a 27" iMac (about 18 months old) and currently using Time Machine to backup my internal hard drive to an external raid setup.  However, I keep all of my media files on an external hard drive rather than take up much needed real estate on my internal HD.
My question - is there anyway thru Time Machine to backup my external media drive to another extrnal drive, which is part of my raid setup?  All externals are hooked up to the iMac and the iMac is recognizing all drives.
Or is Time machine limited in nature to only allow copying/backup from the internal drive to some other peripheral drive?
    Thanks!!

Time Machine can back up from multiple volumes, but only to a single volume.
Internal volumes are backed-up by default; external volumes are excluded by default.  Go to Time Machine Prefs > Options.  The external should be listed in the exclusions box there.  If it's shown in black, just select it and click the minus sign at the bottom.   It will be included on the next backup.
If it's listed in gray, however, it's not formatted HFS+ (any variation of Mac OS Extended), Time Machine can't back it up, and you can't remove it.
If there isn't room on your external, and you can't expand the partition your backups are on, you'll need a different app, such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper.

  • Time Machine Backup *from* basement (NAS)?

    Hello:
I read multiple times that it is currently not possible to backup from a NAS via Time Machine. I have two questions:
1/ Can anyone explain why this is so?
2/ I have my iMac in my living room and would like to put an external hard drive with all my media files on it in the basement, because a) it is noisy and b) for security reasons. There is a network cable going to the basement, but obviously I cannot run a USB cable down there. I have a 2TByte-Time Capsule for backup and WiFi. Does anyone have a suggestion, what to do?
    Thanks,
    Hal

Thank you for the feedback, William. I am not sure how your suggestion would help with my problem, maybe I did not explain well enough. I do not want another hard drive in my living room, but rather in my basement. If I understand correctly, Time Machine only backups *from* the internal hard drive or external hard drives directly connected via USB, F/W, eSATA etc., but not network drives. Does your suggestion imply that I use a different backup software?

  • Content copier backup has contacts etc. but won't ...

I have a problem with Content Copier backups from my E71 to my PC.
    1) I choose to backup everything.
    2) Backup proceeds, but says there was an error: on viewing logs there is nothing listed under "These items could not be backed up" heading. Backup log says contacts, messages, calender have all been backed up.
    3) On finishing backup my E71 is sometimes left with a semi-blank Home screen, and hung. Have to remove battery to get it working again.
    4) On trying to restore this backup, contacts, messages, notes, calendar aren't listed as being included in the backup.
Installing the trial version of Noki shows that the backups DO indeed contain contact details. But presumably there's something in the backup file that makes Content Copier think that contact details aren't in fact there, or that they're corrupted.
    PC Suite 7.1.18.0
    E71 firmware version 100.07.76 and 200.21.118
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I don't think it's the phone.
I've now tested using Content Copier to do backups on my laptop. This still had PC Suite 7.0.9.2 on it, and the backup completed without error, including "Settings" to backup phone-specific settings. I then upgraded PC Suite to 7.1.18.0 and now the backup fails if I have "Settings" selected.
I've also tried completely uninstalling PC Suite and reinstalling 7.1.18.0 but I still get failed backups.
PC Suite 7.0.9.2: backup works correctly, including "Settings"
PC Suite 7.1.18.0: backup fails if "Settings" are selected to be backed up
I've opened the backup files in Write, and both failed and completed backups contain Contacts data in VCARD format (which is presumably why Noki could see contact data), but the completed backups also have another 18Mbytes of binary data that are missing from the failed backup files (presumably the phone-specific settings stuff).
It would be nice if Content Copier could allow me to extract the Contacts and Calendar data from a failed backup: the data is in there!
I've been communicating all this with Nokia Europe Support, so hopefully this will be fixed soon.

  • Copying from a Time Machine backup to a Mac with Tiger

I've got a Time Machine Backup of my MBP, which is running Leopard (obviously). I'd like to grab all of the files (recursively) from the latest TM backup of my "Documents" directory onto another Mac with Tiger.
From the command line (on the Tiger machine with the TM firewire backup drive connected), I've tried:
    sudo cp -RL /Volumes/Daily/Backups.backupdb/My MacBook Pro/Latest/Macintosh HD/Users/sbrown/Documents/* ~/Documents
However, it does not follow the hard links. How can I get it to follow whatever links it needs to to give me a complete set of the files in the Documents folder?

Confirmed best practice (after hours with AppleCare)--will allow you to create a comprehensive backup of whatever you need from a former TM backup, without traversing aliases or needing to keep a Leopard install around after the initial step.
You DO need to have Leopard still installed, just once. Simply boot into Leopard, navigate to your backup volume and go to Latest--> in the Backup DB. This is your entire system as it most recently appeared. If you have enough hard drive space on your TM volume, you can copy every folder here to the root level of the same TM volume. This would ensure a complete, up-to-date and Tiger-visible backup at the root level. However, you can also just copy the folders you need--to the same root level of the TM backup--and the OS will break all the hardlinks and create normal (duplicate) files in the new location.
This is good because it bypasses your likely-small internal hard drive (which, if you're on a Powerbook, is a precious commodity). It just makes a dupe of your most recent backup. The other method (Show Original) won't let you get the entire drive state back easily. It requires manual lookup of every file you think you need, then a reboot into Leopard if you need another. This method lets you create a working archive.
    Hope that helps...

  • Can't copy some files from FileVault Sparsebundle in Time Machine backup

I've got filevault turned on for my mac Mac Mini (10.6.2). I'm using Time Machine to back up to a firewire drive. There's plenty of space - my Mini hd has 250 Gb of 500 used, and I'm backing up to a 750Gb partition on the external drive. The initial backup went OK, and when I logged out it backed up my filevault-protected home directory. When I logged back in, I was able to browse the Backups.backupdb on the external drive, go to the users directory, and open the sparsebundle that was my filevault-protected home directory (after entering the password). I can browse through this backup of my home directory. However, when I try copying files from the backup of the home directory, I get an error:
The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "(filename)" can't be read or written. (Error code -36).
I get this error for some files, but not all of them. I've tried running BatChmod to reset permissions on all files in my home directory, and then erasing the backup drive and having Time Machine recreate the backup. However I'm still having this problem.
I have also tried restoring the entire hard drive (to a 3rd external HD) by booting from the 10.6 DVD and going through the full-restore process. All of my files are fine when I restore using this method.
Is there something I should do so that I can restore individual files from the backup of my filevault sparsebundle? It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.
    Thanks,

Don't try to restore files individually by hand using finder. TM backups are protected by very restrictive ACLs and are not designed to be accessed that way.
you can restore the whole sparse bundle with the home directory from TM interface. you should be logged in as a different user when you do this. the easiest is to be logged in as root so as not to deal with any permissions issues.
another thing you might try is doing it from command line instead of finder. this is also not the designed way but might work where finder copy doesn't.
to do this run the following terminal command after you mount the sparse bundle with backups of the home directory
    ditto --noacl path/to/source/file /path/to/target/directory
here path/to/source file is the path to the file in the sparse bundle you want to restore and path/to target directory is the path to the folder where you want to copy it to. an easy way to get the path to an item is to drag that item to the terminal window. make sure that you have all the spaces correctly in the command.
It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.
