Copying/burning a dvd, won't play in a dvd player

Before my disk drive was replaced I could take a dvd, copy it and burn it to a disc (i.e., make a copy for myself), ad it would pla in my dvd player
Since then when I make a copy of something and burn it, it won;t play in ant DVD player. Will play onthe computer though
What settings do I need to change?

Musicwind is right, there's no way to do what you describe without third-party tools. A commercial DVD, like what you'd be using in a DVD player, cannot be copied using the Finder or Disk Utility, due to copy protection issues. Are you using something like Handbrake to rip the DVD, or is this not a commercial DVD that you're copying?

Dear Apple friends The iDVD burns DVDs with-out any error messages but DVDs dont play in regular DVD players I notice that the DVD burns to a folder and there is no setting to prevent this How do you burn the DVD with-out it getting put into a folder ??? Thanks Mike

That often is a result of using inferior DVD disks and burning at too high a speed.  What brand and type of disk did you use and what speed did you burn at?
Follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Burned dvd won't play on my dvd player.

Help! I downloaded FREE DVD creator from the APP store. Followed directions on how to burn DVD. Imported video from iMovie ( vacation video ), burned it onto DVD and the playback on my DVD player is very jittery, stutters, and sometimes freezes. The video format was m4v. and the other format was .mov. Am I doing something wrong? Did I miss something? Very frustrating spending all that time editing the video only to have it not play on my DVD player. Do I need to get iDVD or a 3rd party app? Please help.

    Hi
Best place to ask is in iDVD forum - but still -
There are lot's of factors determine the resulting DVD quality
Stutter and jittery etc use to be due to
    • material is in different frames per second (PAL vs NTSC)
I start with finding out in what format the DVD is supposed to be
    PAL (25fps) = EU
    NTSC (29.97fps) = US
Most DVD-players in EU can handle both - Few in US can do so
    • .m4v or .mov etc are no Video-Codecs but containers - Open the movie file in QuickTime-Player and then open Inspector [cmd+I] to find out Video format and frame-rate
I use JES_Deinterlacer to get all my material into same standard then Import it into iDVD (set to same standard).
By letting iMovie or iDVD do this conversion usually results in STUTTERING and JITTERY results. JES_Deinterlacer does this so much better - AND IT'S FREE !
    • Using Cheap DVD brands as Memorex, NoNames etc - usually don't work at all (for VIDEO-DVDs - Data-DVD usually works but they do not play in any DVD-player)
    I only use Verbatim
    • DVD type used matters - DVD+/-RW usually doesn't work or gives a disastrous result. DVD+R plays on more modern DVD-players - BUT DVD-R plays on older ones too.
    I use DVD-R
    • BURN SPEED - Full speed usually results in DVDs that doesn't play or only on a few devices.
I always set this down to x2 or x4
So You see there are multiple reasons why this can go wrong.

  • DVD won't play in my DVR player

I've read the other posts on this already, but they don't seem to address what I believe is my issue.
I took an mp4 movie into iDVD as "One step DVD from movie", it took 8 hours to burn a 120 minute movie. When the screen said "done" it also said there was 21 minutes left to go. I clicked "close" and it popped an error that it wasn't finished, so I clicked on "continue", I left it go for another hour and the screen never changed from the done/21 minutes screen so this time I clicked "close" and "cancel".
The DVD plays on my MBP, though I'm not crazy about the quality. When I put it in my Panasonic DVR it won't play at all. I know it's not the media, as this is the same media I use in the DVR to burn movies with never a problem (Memorex DVD+Rdl).

    Greetings,
I would not rule out the media. You can have a bad disk in a stack, they are just bits of plastic after all.
I would also suggest using DVD-R rather than +R for better compatibility with more DVD Players.
    Open your iDVD project.
Go to Advanced > Delete Encoded Assets
Go to iDVD > Preferences > Advanced and lower the Preferred DVD Burning Speed to as low as you can stand. The lower the number the more likely the disk is to be recognized by various DVD Players.
    Burn again.
    Hope that helps.

  • Dvd won't play on Windows media player

I have used idvd 6 to burn a final cut express movie onto a dvd. However, when I try to play it on my pc, it will not work. It works on a dvd player, but not Windows media player. Is there any way to make this work?
    Thanks!

HI there, I am too having this issue, I have never had this problem before. I always test the dvd in my windows p.c. to make sure it is viewable. I forgot to do it this time, and low and behold when I gave it to a few people, they were also not able to view it. 2 pc's in my office keep saying that it is missing an mpg2 plugin so can not play. The other pc, it just keeps playing the main menu, there is nothing for them to click to view it. Now mine at home will not play either, it has no menus on the screen, but it plays the menu music. Now my p.c. is up to date so there should not be any reason it will not play. I have burned at 1x, verbatim disc's etc.. It plays fine on my Mac, but even there I have just noticed that I used to be able to click with the mouse on each title to play. Now I have to scroll on the menu, then play from the dvd player control. Any help would be appreciated. They have been playing on a TV with the player though, thanks as always, Ileen

  • My DVD won't play on a DVD player.

I created an iMovie project. I brought it into iMovie, created a DVD project, titles, chapter headings, everything great. I burned the DVD project to a disk image. When I subsequently burned the image to a disk, it played on the computer, but when I put into a DVD player, it claims the disc is a data disc, and nothing plays. Any clues as to what I did wrong, and better yet, how do I make it work. ~Thanks.

    Hi
When DVD do not play it use to be
    • One has made a Data-DVD and not a Video-DVD
Data-DVDs are made by just popping in the DVD and You see it on DeskTop/Finder and drop files onto it. When Ejected it Burns and result is a Data-DVD
To make a Video-DVD You need to use a program that can structure the DVD into a Video-DVD structure
    a. iDVD can do this
    b. DiskUtil tool can do this from a DVD DiskImage
    c. Roxio Toast™ too
    • Use of Cheap DVD Brand - I only use Verbatim
    • DVD-type used - I use DVD-R as they play on more (and even older) DVD-Players
    • I set down Burn speed to x4 as this gives less Burn Errors ==> Plays better

  • DVD won't play on home DVD player

Running Imovie 9.0.4. Exported DVD using "Export Using Quicktime." I burnt a DVD and it plays fine on my computer but not on my DVD player connected to my TV at home.
I tried "iDVD" but it doesn't prompt me to burn a DVD or acts like it evens saves a movie. Just runs for a couple of minutes and that's it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi
    A. QT.mov on DeskTop to a DVD ===> a Data-DVD that can be played on any computer with QuickTime-player. No DVD-player can playback this.
    B. You need iDVD to do the Video-DVD structure. What You most certainly did was dropping the QT.mov into a Drop-zone in iDVD Menu window and this will play just for a few minutes. If dropped slightly to the side of this area it would have worked OK.
    I rather from iMovie do.
    • Share to Media Browser and as Large (not HD or other res.) - NEVER Share to iDVD as result will suffer.
    • Close iMovie and open a brand new iDVD project and from within iDVD - Media button - Movies import (drag and drop) Your movie into the Menu Window and now try not to land it onto a Drop-Zone.
    Other things that matters
    • brand of DVD - I only use Verbatim
    • Type of DVD - I use DVD-R as they play on more even older DVD-players
    • set down burn speed to x2 or x4 = works so much better.

  • DVD won't play back in bluray player

I just created a DVD in DVD SP, about 5 mins long with audio. It plays back beautifully on the computer, but my sony bluray player doesn't recognize it at all. I haven't tried on a standard DVD player, but I don't see how that would help. A previously made DVD plays fine on the player. Any thoughts?
    Thanks

    Dear Shawn,
Still no good. In a render last night, weirdly, even in my Mac the disk was unreadable and the warning said it was blank, but I rendered again and it works fine on the Mac. But on my SONY player, nothing.
I changed DVD SP to standard in the Preferences and re-created the project from scratch. I used the DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes setting with no changes. Here is the breakdown:
    Name: MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass
Description: Fits up to 90 minutes of video with Dolby Digital audio at 192 Kbps or 60 minutes with AIFF audio on a DVD-5
    File Extension: m2v
Estimated size: 2.79 GB/hour of source
    Type: MPEG-2 video elementary stream
              Usage:SD DVD
    Video Encoder
              Format: M2V
              Width and Height: Automatic
              Pixel aspect ratio: Default
              Crop: None
              Padding: None
              Frame rate: (100% of source)
              Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
              Start timecode from source
              Aspect ratio: Automatic
                        Selected 16:9
              Field dominance: Automatic
              Average bit rate: 6.2 (Mbps)
              2 Pass VBR enabled
                        Maximum bit rate: 7.7 (Mbps)
              High quality
              Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 1/2 second, Structure: IBBP
              DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled
I am at my wits' end. I have two weeks to get this done for a memorial for my late father so you see my desperation.
Do you have any possibilities left? I'd go ahead and sign up for the Pro classes at the Apple Store, but in NYC I'm afraid I wouldn't even get to see anyone in time for FCP and its suite.
    Thank you for any advice.

  • DVD won't play in PC DVD drive.

I know this message board is full of questions like the one I am about to ask. But I am working on a project for school due in the morning and i am having a problem. So bear with me. I am completely new to DVDSP. I made a project in FCP and exported it using Compressor. I am not completely convinced I did it right. Then I drop a template in and moved my files to the asset folder. I then set my movie to the first track and assigned one of the buttons on the main menu to that track. When I burned it the DVD played back fine on a regular DVD player. But it will not play back on a computer DVD player. I have to show the project in class and the only way to show it is using a PC DVD player. HELP!!!!!!!!

    Hi:
    Wellcome to the discussions !
You didn't mention what software player you tried in that PC. Probably Windows Media Player?
You can download the free cross plataform VLC Player and install it in that PC. Most probably you'll get your DVD working.
    Hope it helps !

  • The DVD I burned won't play on my DVD player

I filmed my son playing a concert on my iPhone.  It is about an hour long.  I was able to make it into a quick time movie.  I figured out how to bun it on to a DVD throught Finder, but the DVD won't play on my DVD player or the Mac DVD player.  What am I doing wrong?

Did you use iDVD to create the video DVD for playing?
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • Burned DVD won't play in DVD player?

I burned a video I purchased on itunes to a DVD using Finder (dragging and dropping onto disk). It burned fine, but won't play in my DVD player. It will play on my computer though.
Are there different formats you can burn it in? Am I not using the correct format?
    I am using a DVD-RW disk.
    Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

In iTunes you create a Playlist from the tracks you want and then select it and 'Burn Playlist to disc', just dragging the files in the Finder is just copying the files across and not making a playable CD.

I used iDVD to create an IMG file
You created the video DVD, the IMG file, with iDVD and just burned it with Disk Utility. As Klaus1 pointed out Disk Utility can't create video DVDs.

  • IDVD burned discs won't play on any dvd player

When I burn a dvd using Idvd they will not play on standard dvd players.
Is this a problem with anyone else?
I noticed it was a problem in the early 2000-2003 but apparently something got fixed, because I couldn't find an incident where this problem continued to occur.
I am new to the Mac world and I don't always understand the acronymns used when I read responses.  However, here is my problem.
    Burning dvd's using Idvd:
    1.  the burn seems to run and function normally
    2. when I insert the burned dvd into a dvd player one of the following things occur:
         a) loading takes a very long time, then I get a message saying "wrong disc"
          b) loading occurs fast, reads the file as a dvd, the dvd begins playing the music and showing the main menu screen, after accessing a menu option the dvd begins to play the slideshow with the music then after a minute or two, it freezes, and is no longer readable when attempting to reload it, the message is "wrong disc"
    3.  I've tried using dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd+r dual layer, and changing the burn speed to 8x, then to 4x and then to 2x.  Nothing seems to matter.
    4.  I have noticed that in Idvd the dvd type is for an older version of dvd's such as single layer 4.2 gb and double layer 7.7 gb. I'm wondering whether the Idvd software on my MacMini is up to date, even though when I check for updates under the apple it comes back saying my system is up to date.
    I'm using a MacMini running Mac OSX v 10.6.8 with processor 2.26ghz, Intel core 2 duo, memory 2gb 1067 mhz ddr3, and my dvd drive is a pioneer dvd-rw dvrts08, firmware q81f.
I really need help to fix the problem with the IDVD software or to know that I need to purchase another DVD maker software for my Mac.  The product below says my Mac is running OS X v 10.7.2 but it isn't it is running v 10.6.8 as I stated.
    URGENT!!!!

My macmini is under 2 years old.  I reviewed your list of affects and I am going down the list to determine possible cause and effect.
I did try the PRAM process.  The DVD still won't play on my DVD player but it did play on my son's Sony blue ray.  I burned it at 2x burn rate after the PRAM process completed.
I can assume that's progress.  The audio did however skip a couple of times while playing.  That is new.
I will continue down the list using different type of blank dvd's etc.
Question: As I was reading through some other issues I'm learning that Mac/Apple is discontinuing IDVD, is that correct?
Are you aware of some other software to purchase that will create dvd's on the mac?  If so, I may as well go that route rather than wasting more time using a defunct product.  What is your opinion?

  • Burned DVD-R won't play in domestic DVD player

Why a DVD-R i burn won't play in a common domestic DVD player, even the most recent and good quality ones ? Is there something else i should do before burning ?

How did you burn it? If you dragged the files to the dvd in finder and then hit burn it won't play in a dvd player, but if you used iDVD it should work.

  • Many File Types dragged to iDVD, burned to DVD, won't play on DVD player

I have made a recording on Camtasia (video, pictures and audio). My goal is to make it into a DVD that plays on standard players. Any format I have saved the file to is not working.
Here's what I have done so far:
From Camtasia I have selected Advanced Export and saved it as a MPEG4. Then learned that MPEG are not recognized by many DVD players.
Then I did an Advanced Export and saved the file as Quick Time. Moved it into iDVD, burned the disk and again the disk won't play on either of my DVD players.
I have done another Advance Export and saved the file as an AVI but now only the first 3 minutes of a 30 minute video are being captured.
I know everyone can appreciate that each of these burn processes take a lot of time. I am doing them only to be disappointed (aggravated) that they won't playing on my DVD players (I have tried two). I am using Verbatim DVD +R.
If someone uses Camtasia and iDVD that would be ideal. But at this point, I'd also be willing to try another program just to get the job done.

    Hi Vicadea
Welcome to apple discussions. I've never tried Camtasia for Mac. Apparently it's not working very well for you even when you export as a QuickTime movie. I don't know what to say other than it seems like fairly pricey screen capture software ($299) just to have it not work as you expected on multiple attempts.
For much less money and much more reliable results I'd recommend the following for screen capture instead:
    http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/
Hope this helps but if not just come on back. Good luck.
