Copying CD to hard drive

Hi,
I play a game (Diablo 2) and it requires the CD to be in the drive in order to run it. I heard that in OS X you can copy a CD to the hard drive and run the CD from there, essentially tricking the program into thinking it is running from the CD. Is this true? How would I do this? Does it have something to do with a disk image? I'm kinda new to this, so be gentle
Thanks

Yes, you can make a disk image of the CD (actually any CD.) Keep in mind that it will use disk space so be sure you have sufficient disk space to store the disk image. Keep in mind that some games know when they are not being run from a CD, and will refuse to work. It's part of the copy protection scheme used.
To create a disk image just do the following:
Duplicate a CD or DVD
1. Insert the DVD/CD;
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
To run the game simply double-click on the .cdr file to mount the disc image on the Desktop. Double-click on the disk icon to open a Finder window so you can then locate and run the game.

  • Is this a copy of my hard drive?  Can I trash it?

    Hello Helpful Apple People,
    I recently hit too many of the wrong keys at the same time and I ended up with this icon on my desktop:
    I'm not sure what it is, but I believe it's a copy of my hard drive?  (My original hard drive is still on the desktop.)  I'd like more than anything to throw it in the trash, but I want to make sure that before I do, that won't ruin anything.   Thanks.

    Thanks, Niel.
    Can you explain what an alias is and why someone would want one?  Why is it useful?

  • Can i copy my entire hard drive from one computer to another?

    I am buying a used ibook 900gh 640ram 40gb hd using 300mh clamshell now - i would like to copy my entire hard drive from the clamshell to the new ibook OS and all so when i use it everything will look and work exactly like it does on the clamshell - can i do this easily? disc copy when booted from a CD?

    Hi, not on Tiger at the moment, so I can't be certain, but...
    I may be wrong, but I thought the Networked Mac only came about in Leopard's Migration assistant.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1554
    Setup Assistant, included with computers that have Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later preinstalled, can transfer data (including account settings and home folders) from a previous Mac (that's using Mac OS X 10.1 or later) to your newer computer. You'll need a FireWire cable to connect the two computers together. The Assistant offers to transfer (or "migrate") data from your older computer when you turn on your new computer for the first time. Make sure the older computer's firmware is up-to-date first.
    The only way I see this is going to happen is with a USB/FW external drive, and painfully Clone the Clamshell via USB 1.1 to the external drive, move the drive to the iBook and connect via FW.

    Don't understand exactly what you want to do. Can you restate your question?
    You posted in the OS 10.3 forum instead of the MacBook Pro forum. To get answers to your question, next time post in the proper forum. See https://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa  I'll request that Apple relocate your post.
    Also you show iOS 6.1.4 on your profile. iOS 6.1.4 only runs on a iPhone, not a MacBook Pro.

  • Can i use a external thunderbolt harddrive to copy my imac hard drive.

    how fast would a thunderbolt external hard drive be, if i were to copy my Imac hard drive as a backup or image. At the moment its taking 4 hours to copy 95gig using my USB external hard drive......Seems like forever!!!!!

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1948?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    Visit that link. It seems you should be able to but you would have to format the drive and install the operating system to it.
    On the iMac, start it up and immeditely hold down Command + R.  From there you can open disk utility and format it.

  • PSE-10 how do I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer

    Can I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer? Under Get Photos, I select import  from folders/files but after browsing to the external hard drive the copy option is disabled/greyed out. I there a method to import and copy?

    That would be mounted as an internal drive and hence the corresponding option is not checked during Import.
    Once you import the media form this drive, you can select all and go for File >> Copy/Move files option and copy them wherever you want to.
    Hope this helps

  • Copy fonts to hard drive causes size to be zero k.

    iMac intel
    OS10.6.5
    We use fonts from various customers. They reside with other files on a file server. When needed, we copy to local hard drive to activate using Suitcase Fusion 3.
    We have noticed that sometimes the Font Suitcase file loses its size when copied. We can open the fonts over the network ok, but when copied to the local drive they are whacked.
    Any insight would be appreciated.

    Somehow, the fonts are getting their resource forks stripped when copied from the server to the Mac desktop. All Mac legacy suitcase style TrueType fonts and Type 1 PostScript fonts have their data in the resource fork. So when those get lost, there's nothing left. Hence the zero byte files.

    What you want to do is select the files you want to move then go File>Relocate Masters. Your images will then be referenced to a location you select. Aperture will still continue to manage the images, but the external hard drive must be connected if you want to make adjustments. Aperture will retain Metadata and any adjustment information. Your original images will stay unmodified on your external drive.

    Then your iTunes must be looking at the removable disc, not your hard drive. Did you actually copy the songs onto your computer, or simply tell iTunes to look at the removable drive?
    Highlight a song and click on File/Get Info/Summary>Where and check the location that iTunes has listed for the song. What does it say?

  • Why do I need a bootable copy of my hard drive?

    A little while ago I got a little too enthusiastic about reclaiming space on the drive and mistakenly deleted my Receipts folder. So far the eMac is fine, but I've been advised I should perform an archive and reinstall of the system, and, just in case, to make a bootable backup of my hard drive first, and to buy an external hard drive that could make such a copy.
    My question is why I need a bootable copy of the hard drive. I'm a light user (internet, Quicken, no video games, movies or graphics processing), and after deleting duplicate mp3 files, unused printer drivers, stripping unneeded languages from programs, and cleaning out those un-deleted files left after deleting programs, I'm down to 13G used on my 40G hard drive (and the old beast just whizzes around). I can save that much stuff on my (new) 16G USB drive, which won't be bootable. So, why should I worry about bootability?

    You know, I think you're right. I'm marking this solved because you just validated my thought. My to-do list is long enough without hovering over a hard drive for a couple of evenings and hoping and praying I do things right.
    The Apple store is open today, but I think I'll wait until tomorrow and toddle over to our local Mac reseller (buy local-ish!) and pick up something that's plug-n-play. And, even though I've only got a 40G drive, and about 20G to back up, I'll probably end up buying something bigger (and partition a small volume for my backup) so that when I finally do buy a new computer I'll already have a backup drive.

    I had a repair done at the apple store where the replaced my hard drive and copied my other hard drive over to the new one.  Everything is fine except the time machine wont reconnect to my old file and is trying create a new file but not there is not enough space for both files files? Do I need to do something to have it continue to update my old file instead of recreating a new one?

    Depending on what version of OSX you're running, and how the data was transferred, you may be out of luck.
    If you're running Lion, and your backups were made to a directly-connected external HD (ie, not a Time Capsule or other network location), you may be able to get Time Machine to "associate" the new disk with the old backups.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the pink box there.
    If you're running Snow Leopard, you might be able to do a full system restore of your backups to the new HD.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions.  That should leave a "trail" that Time Machine can follow to "associate" the new drive with the old backups.  Unfortunately, that doesn't always work, and there's no way to do it manually, as there is with Lion.

  • HT1391 cant play my music in itunes after copying to larger hard drive.

    cant play my music in itunes after copying to larger hard drive.

    I'm guessing you moved rather than copying.
    What steps exactly did you take?
    If you moved the iTunes Media folder from <User's Music> iTunes to some random location then that is wrong way to do it. You haven't complained of an empty library so I'm guessing that's what you did.
    What generally works is to move the entire iTunes folder to say X:\iTunes, and then hold down shift as you start iTunes. You should get a prompt asking you to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the moved library.
    If you moved just the media folder then move the main iTunes folder, shift the media folder inside, then shift-start-iTunes. It should all come together.

  • I am trying copy dvd's (with no luck) to my macbook and then on to an external hard drive.  What appears to be "copied" on the hard drive comes up with an error when you try to view the movies.

    I am new to the Apple community and am having a lot of trouble.  I am using a Macbook Pro and attempting to copy movies to an external hard drive for my husbands upcoming travels.  I have used the "disk utility" and was able to watch the movie from my Pro but have not been able to figure out how to copy it to the external hard drive.  I have a few movies on the external hard drive already but when he tries to view them from his Macbook Air or even the Pro we are unable to do so.  An error message comes up and we are not able to determine what we need to do to fix this.  We are not computer savvy and would appreciate if someone could explain to us how to resolve this problem.  Thank you for all and any help we can get.

    I can't copy a folder from an external drive to the hard drive!
    A message comes up: "The operation can't be completed because an item with the
    name  ".DS_Store" already exists."
    What does this mean and what do I have to in order to be able copy the folder?

    Looks like Wikipedia discusses this file:
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.DS_Store
    Perhaps you are logged in as a regular user and some permissions on that file are preventing you from over writing it.  Maybe a different account has full permissions over the existing .DS_Store file.
    You could try creating a new Top level Folder and copy into this new folder.
    Or you could log into an Administrator account and using the Terminal App delete the .DS_Store file at the comand prompt.
    You could also try deleting the .DS_Store file from the Folder on the external drive,
       using the Terminal App would be the easiest
        to delete a file that is invisible to the Finder App.
    example:
      prompt> cd /Volumes/System/Drop/
      prompt> ls -al .DS_Store
    -rw-r--r--@ 1 user  wheel  12292 Dec 27 16:12 .DS_Store
      prompt> rm .DS_Store
