Copying data files from Mac to Windows on MacBook running Parallel

How can I copy .doc files from Mac folders to Windows folders?
I am running Parallel but I cannot access the Mac folders and files when I am running Windows.
I cannot access flash drives from Windows either.
Can anyone help?
Thank you
MacBook Black   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Theres a feature called shared folders that works
quite nicely. I cant quite remember the specifics but
I have done it before. Or if you've got a few small
ones copy and pasting between work spaces now works.
Cheers, Arthur
Now all I need do is figure out how to turn on the sound when using Windows. Everything is as it should be on my Xp setup but no sound. Mac must be controlling this but I do not know where to look to solve this situation.
Have a great week,

  • Copying files from Mac to Windows-invalid file names

Unfortunately, my boss likes Windows more than Macs, so we have puchased some new Dell computers to replace older G4 Macs.
I'm having trouble copying existing files from a Mac (OS 10.4)to the shared drive on the Windows XP computer. I'm getting an error message:
"You can't copy the item 'filename' because the name is too long or includes characters that the disk can't display." Sometimes it doesn't give a filename, it gives a similar message "Some items couldn't be copied..."
I assume the person has used some "illegal" file names such as "Meeting minutes 10/7/07" Or maybe we have too many folders inside of folders.
QUESTION: Is there a correct/better way to copy large quantites of files/folders from Mac to Windows? Or is there a program that will look at the Mac files and alert me to wrong or too long files names?
Other ideas to copy these files?
    thanks,
    Bill

You can use a freeware utility like Renamer4Mac or BatchRename'em both of which have built-in filters that will rename files for Windows compatibility.
Thank you... This sounded to me like it would fix the problem, so I downloaded both and looked at them. However, the manual/help file is very sparse, so I don't know if it will do what I want to and how it would do it.
    1. I couldn't find any option in either program to: Look at all files in selected folder, and list any invalid file names for Windows.
    2. There doesn't seem to be an option to "rename files without bad Windows characters" or "Remove invalid for Windows characters"
I just couldn't find any explanation of how it was offering to rename the files. I can't rename all files to sequential names, that would make it hard to find a file later.
    Thank you,
    Bill

I copied jpg files from my mac book to a windows pc, however, when I go to the widows machine I can see them on the hard drive of the pc but the pc will not open them.
During the copy an added extension, a "dot" and then an underscore before each files name.  Example.  On my mac I have a jpg file named 2f.jpg and when I copied it over it appears on the windows pc as   ._2f.jpg.  Windows can not read it

    Hi Friends,
I'm forced to use a PC at work that I have the windows formatted ext hard drive connected to for backup purposes.
I connected the external drive via USB2 to my TiPB and downloaded some RAW image files.
Those image files are not recognized by my Bridge on my Mac.
Those image files are no longer recognized by my PC thru Bridge, Photoshop or Lightroom. I also see an extra file type with the name "filename.dng.mac"
Therefore, if my original file name is "_JTR0398.dng", then, after mounting the external HD on my laptop or PowerMac, I also get another file next to it named "_JTR0398.dng.mac".
    Thanks for your help!

  • Copying Files from Mac to Windows

We are moving to an AD network and need to copy user data from older Xserves to Windows 2008 R2 servers. Is there a program or preferred method that anyone has found to make a good, automated, bulk copy from Mac to 2008 R2 servers? We are concerned that the file extended attributes are copied correctly AND that there is a 'update' option to only copy changes.

Try dragging and dropping on a test folder with attributes that you need.
My hunch is that it will work fine if you just "Select all", Copy and paste.
But try on a test folder first.

  • Transferring Premiere Elements 12 files from Mac to Windows

I am adminstrating an oral history project.  We have several people who will be editing using Premiere Elements 12.
The computers will be Macs and Windows.
We need to be able to transfer project files and completed movies between both types of computers.
Fats32  is limited because files can only be 4G and the raw files are about an hour and the finished file will be able 13-15GB
NTFS can only be read by MACs and written by Windows
HFS+ only written and read by MACs
Any suggestions for what media can be used to transfer and this is another big questions will a ac file be readable by windows and visa-versa
    Thank you for your suggestions

I am strictly an Elements Windows person but, taking that out of the equation, I would go Windows.
Premiere Elements Windows and Mac are essentially the same in video editing principles, but there are differences between the two. And, these differences often end up with Premiere Elements Mac on the short side...many Windows Only features.
A while back I wrote a blog post on Mac Information Round Up to try to focus in on the Premiere Elements Mac situation. That blog post link is
    http://www.atr935.blogspot.com/2013/08/pe11-mac-information-round-up.html
Included in the blog post is a long list of WIndows Only Effects. The most annoying Windows Only for the Mac people appears to be related to the Green Screening Key, Blue Screen Key, Chroma Key. I propose the use of the Difference Matte for Premiere Elements Mac users as mentioned in the blog post.
And, the Elements Organizer in Premiere Elements Windows does come with a slideshow feature.
If you are going to go Windows, best have Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit computer so that it is a 64 bit application which can take advantage of the 64 bit resources. Check me on this, but I am almost certain that Premiere Elements Mac needs to be on 64 bit, but also with 64 bit processor in order for it to be a 64 bit application.
If there are to be "flaws" in the program, they are more likely to be troubleshooted to resolution in Premiere Elements Windows than Premiere Elements Mac. Versions of Premiere Elements Mac purchased from the Mac App Store have been highly problematic, and the cause(s) often left unresolved.
That is my take on the matter.

Yes Certainly. PS has been reading Nikon NEF files for YEARS. The only problem you may run into is with the Newest Nikon cameras. That is if you have the newest Nikon. That is until Adobe updates Adobe Camera RAW to support the newer Nikon cameras.

  • Copying itunes library from Mac to Windows over Local Network

I am a recent switcher. When I first got my MacBook I connected my Windows formatted iPod to the MacBook to transfer my purchased iTunes music, and everything worked fine.
Now I want to transfer the iTunes music folder from my Mac to a PC (both Vista and XP) over my local network. However, when I try to do this I get the following error message:
Error 0x800700FE: The specified extended attribute name was invalid.
I get the same error message if I try to transfer the individual music folders (eg Oasis).
I have no trouble transferring the folders for song/albums that I have subsequently downloaded to the Mac from iTunes. I only have the problem with the music I originally transferred from the iPod.
I have been trying to research extended attributes to see if I can edit this, but it all goes over my head. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
i'm also a new Mac user (Vista did the trick , and i found this article on the Apple support website.
Below information can also be used to do the inverse... Mac to PC.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302392
It explains how to do a backup to CD/DVD. When you have a large library, multiple DVD's will be used.
It tried it out with a portion of my lib, burned a backup with my PC, and imported it on my MacBook. Works great! All but last played information is copied over...
Even Podcast, Movies etc are taken into account, also music not residing within the iTunes folder. After the restore on Mac, everything is properly placed within the iTunes folder you assigned.
    Enjoy,

  • How Do I Transfer File from Mac to Windows?

I have a 5GB video file on the Mac that I would like to transfer to a Windows laptop.  Windows can not read my external mac drive and a 5GB file is to large for a FAT drive.  Is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks for the quick reply, I am not familiar with ExFat, but I do have Windows 7.  Will see if I can figure out how to do that then.  I have a 16GB flash drive that I can try this on with.  I assume ExFAT does not have the GB limit that FAT drives have then.

  • Share files between Mac and Windows sessions.

    Hello,
I've a business(sales) software(Ciel) which is working on Mac. This software is generating a file which can be exported to another (Ciel) software(accounting) but which only works on Windows. I've made 2 sessions for both operating systems, split hard disk in 2 partitions and installed the both software separately.
How can I let the windows partition being accessible to writing mode from mac session in order to export the file from mac to windows?
    Thank's in advance.

You may want to investigate Parallels for Mac. It will allow you to share everything in your Mac with Windows.

  • Can't copy some files from Windows 7 to Mac OSX over network

    Hi,
I'm running the latest version of Max OSX v10.8.4 on a brand new Macbook Pro.
I have followed the setup instructions at http://www.7tutorials.com/how-change-workgroup-mac-os-x-easy-networking to access my Macbook from Windows, and http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/24950/how-to-share-a-folder-in-os-x-with-windows/ to share some folders from my Macbook to Windows.
I am now trying to copy some files from my Windows 7 Pro (SP1) computer to my Mac, and have hit the following problems:
I can view my Macbook in my list of local networked computers on WIndows, but I cannot access it. Clicking on it causes Windows 7 to try and access it, but then I get a message after a minute saying the network path could not be found. However, if I manually enter the IP address of my Macbook in the Windows address bar (\\192.168.0.191), I can view and access all the shared folders. I can never access the Macbook via it's computer name (\\MACBOOK-ROB).
I cannot copy some files from Windows to my Macbook shared folders via Windows. There is nothing to distinguish these files from the hundereds of other files that I have successfully copied to my Macbook. They are pictures and music with no special characters in the filenames, not overly long filenames or folder paths, no access restrictions, or any other security restriction that I can see. However, every single attempt to copy these files to my Macbook results in WIndows reporting that access to the destination was denied.
I have tried both these above scenarios on WiFi and Ethernet, and the results are the same.
    So:
Why am I unable to access my Macbook by it's computer name on the network? How can Windows see it, but not access it?
What are the limitations on transferring files over SMB that is (presumably) causing these specific files to fail?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have a fix for inability to copy files. I had the same problem moving a lot of old files across my LAN from a Windows XP machine to a Mac Mini running Mountain Lion. After confirming copy of some special file, I would get an error that terminated the copy operation, and info on the Mac side would show a locked folder.
I finally decided to eliminate all special files on the Windows side, before copying, by running
         attrib -s -h -r /s /d [drive or folder]\*.*
in a command window. Running attrib /?  tells what the arguments mean, but it doesn't explain that you need the *.* to make the command go through the hierarchy clearing the special attributes on all the files.
After I did that, and then used drag and drop between two Windows Explorer windows (one on the Windows drive, on on the target drive on the Mac), the whole move operation ran to completion without stopping either for error or to ask for confirmation.
I do not have a fix for the inability to access some computers by name rather than by IP address. I'm looking into the possibility of activating bind on the Mac but I haven't done anything yet.

  • Error -36 when trying to copy AVI files from External Drive to Mac

    Hi
Hoping for some help with a problem I appreciate others have faced.
I bought a new video camera recently and have just tried to copy the AVI files from the first few videos to my mac but am getting the error code 36 that states the files cannot be read or written.
The format of the camera is MS-DOS (FAT 32) but when I tried changing it to MAC OS Extended it did something to the camera so the mac could then not recognise it when I tried to re-connect it via the USB port.
I've been able to copy the files onto my friends Windows laptop no problem so don't believe them to be corrupt.
Have also tried the dot_clean fix but this didn't work.
Could there be another reason for the error? Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I hear 3rd Party, or HW Raid 0/1/5/10 are OK, but 6 months is the absolute most I got out of my many screaming RAID setups before they completely lost it!
Bummer. I'm not really doing this for speed though, just for total storage volume and constant, worry-free, no-brainer back-up. I guess RIAD in general is something I need to study up on. Would a simple mirror of one 500GB drive to another (back-up) - and do that twice - be a better, more reliable way to go?
I've used Tri-Backup3/4 for years for Backups, it's fast, automatic, reliable, works in the background if you wish...
Back-up software always seemed to have some kind of a hiccup to it, but I'll certainly look into Tri-Backup3/4. I used to Retrospect years ago, a rather fussy thing if I recall.
Now, on the Safe Mode boot - not a success BUT a different result!
I got the -36 again, but this time it was the external drive FILE that errored, not the OS-resident drive.
In other words, pre-Safe Mode the error said "...because some data in "ZillaHAL" could not be read or written." (ZillaHAL is my OS-X drive).
In Safe, it read, "...because some data in "WinXP Pro.vmem" could not be read or written."
"WinXP Pro.vmem" is the virtual machine file - which basically is a simple Mac volume (folder) containing all of the files to run my XP virtual machine.
Also, this time, a file* did manage to remain on the external drive whereas before, after the error, no file at all remained.
    * a generic icon appears, but it shows a size of 16+GBs. The actual file is 18.13GB - I did manage to shrink it down the other day (from it's previous 25GB).
Well, that's it for now. I'll be away for three days, so don't mind me if I cannot reply back for a spell.
    Thanks BD,

  • Converting file names from Mac to Windows.

I am an Apple tech at a university that uses both PCs and Macs. We have found that we run into some problems when transferring a user's data from one platform to the other.
When transferring lots of files, what do you experienced Mac techs use for safely converting file names from Mac to Windows?
    From Windows to Mac?
We've tried NameCleaner and ended up with bad results.
Please let me know if there is something good out there for these conversions.
    ---Timothy

    The problem looks like this:
    1. User wants to switch from Mac to Windows.
    2. We back up the data from his Mac to a server (an X-Serve RAID).
    3. We log into the server from Windows.
    4. We try to pull his data from the server.
During this data transfer, it quits with an error stating that it can't finish copying the data. I wish I had the exact text, but I don't. It does this repeatedly, and stops on different files from different locations.
In essence, without "cleaning" the Mac file names, data transfer to Windows cannot successfully complete. It quits on certain Mac file names. In the past, NameCleaner has worked sometimes, but now we have had some issues with NameCleaner (which don't matter in this discussion). The goal is to find a better solution than NameCleaner.

  • After copying a file from NTFS to HFS volume, file size changed when viewing in Windows

    Hi guys,
I have a Mac Air running Mavericks on a HFS partition and Windows 7 on a BOOTCAMP NTFS partition. I have some files that I want to read/write from/to both systems. Since OS X can't write NTFS and Windows can't write HFS either, and I don't want to use any 3rd-party tools/drivers, I have to adopt a "stupid" way: in OS X, I copy those files from NTFS to its HFS partition, make changes, then switch to Windows and sync them back to NTFS.
The problem is, after I copied a file from NTFS to HFS in OS X, it seemed ok. But when I switched to Windows, the very copied file in HFS partition had its size changed (bigger) although I didn't make any changes to it in OS X yet. This happens to almost every file I copied, text and binary. For those text files, I tried to open it with EditPlus in Windows and EditPlus reports the correct size on the status bar.
    How could this happen?

I am not sure if this is what your seeing but...
The same unaltered file on two different volumes might use different amounts of disk space. This is because a 'disk' is divided in to 'blocks' and a block (also historically known as a 'sector') is a certain minimum size. So if disk-1 has a block size of 512 bytes and disk-2 has a block size of 1024 bytes then a file containing just 10 bytes will use up twice as much space on disk-2 as disk-1 even though it is the exact same file.
Beyond that, Macs can add additional information like Spotlight tags, labels, icons, etc. which make a file bigger. If you are modifying a file then presumably that also implies adding additional content e.g. for a Word document more text and this will make it bigger. Also depending on some programs are configured or designed 'deleting' text may only mark it as deleted and not really delete. This can apply to older versions of Word which has a 'Fast Save' feature, new versions have removed this and do a proper delete.
You would have to give more details like what you are doing to the document, what kind of document, and what the two sizes are.
Finally, there is one other potential difference, some systems and manufacturers use 1024 as a unit for measuring file and disk sizes, some use 1000. It will be the same number of bytes in each case but 1000 bytes in one case would exactly equal 1MB, and in the other it would be 0.9765MB.

  • OS X 10.4.7 server: Samba leaking ram when copying large files from windows

    Hi.
    I'm having problems with:
Copying files from windows clients to OS X Server 10.4.7 uses up the RAM needed for the files to be copied.
If I copy a 3GB file, it uses 3GB of RAM
If I copy a 5GB file, it uses its 4GB of RAM, plus VM.
If I copy 11GB of files (that is several little files, plus some big by dropping a folder to the share), it consumes all the RAM the machine has, and because of VM paging, whatever other clients are reading from the disk (XRaid) start to have hiccups.
The RAM of the machine NEVER gets flushed after the copying has finished. So Samba is unusable as it is. I have four Xserves with 4GB of RAM, with 4 XRaids connected each one to each Xserve with its Apple Fiber Channel card and cables.
I already did the ack=0 thing, got the size of inet.tcp.sendspace and rcvspace to 8388608 and the buffer to 16777216.
The transfers rates are up to 70MB/s with 2 channel 1gb trunking, and at very sustained rates..
We are using these to edit video content (DV 25) in Sony Vegas with 2 or 3 clients for each server.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks very much.
    XServe G5 cluster node (4) / XRaid 7TB (4)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Michael, I occasionally notice anomolous behaviour when files get dragged between volumes. Mostly the copying window shows an accurate and immediate indication of what's going on, but other times it just looks like nothing's happening, the display never changes, yet, it is in fact copying the files over. Now, if you're copying 2gb files from DVD to HD, it's gonna take some time, more than 5 minutes, so I'm wondering how long you've left it before forcing it to quit?
