Copying data to Xserve unacceptably slow!!

Not really sure what went bad along the way, but I've recently noticed that with one of the arrays in my Xserve RAID (configured RAID 5 + Hotspare) copying data to the array took an unacceptably long amount of time...long enough where I knew something was wrong...When I say long, I mean that it would trickle through copying about 1GB of data in around 30 minutes or so...the fact that I even let it try for this long was simply a test to make sure that my computer hadn't frozen or something...
Based on the fact that the RAID Admin Utility wasn't reporting any errors with any of the drives (nor any other errors at all), I tried to troubleshoot the issue myself by swapping virtually every component of the Xserve RAID unit from one array to the other - meaning the Backup Batteries, the Controllers, the blowers, and the fiber cables that I previously had hooked up to array 1 now got switched to array 2, and vice versa...
Preforming the above test resulted in fixing the data copying problem I was having with the faulty array, but now, I am having the same problem with the other array, which was previously working perfectly...
Can anyone help me figure out what component is most likely culprit of this problem? I assume that it must be a dead or near-dead Controller, though I would like some reassurance that this is highly likely to be the case before I go out and buy a replacement...Any suggestions, comments, or suggested means of further troubleshooting would be sincerly appreciated. Thanks!

How full is are the volumes in question?
From your description I'm guessing they're about 95% full.
The XServe RAID, like any drive, will degrade in performance as used space increases. It starts at around 80% full and once it gets above 90% it's usually noticeable - the system is spending a lot of time waiting for some spare space to spin under the drive head.
This doesn't indicate a failure in any part of the system, other than maybe your initial sizing of the drive, or maybe your archiving process

  • Internal Disk to Disk Data Transfer Speed Very Slow

I have a G5 Xserve running Tiger with all updates applied that has recently started experiencing very slow Drive to Drive Data transfer speeds.
When transferring data from one drive to another ( Internal to Internal, Internal to USB, Internal, Internal to FW, USB to USB or any other combination of the three ) we only are getting about 2GB / hr transfer speeds.
I initially thought the internal drive was going bad. I tested the drive and found some minor header issues etc... that were able to be repaired so I replace the internal boot drive
I tested and immediately got the same issue.
I also tried booting from a FW drive and I got the same issue.
If I connect to the server over the ethernet network, I get what I would expect to be typical data transfer rates of about 20GB+ / hr. Much higher than the internal rates and I am copying data from the same internal drives so I really don't think the drive is the issue.
I called AppleCare and discussed the issue with them. They said it sounded like a controller issue so I purchased a replacement MLB from them. After replacing the drive data transfer speeds jumped back to normal for about a day maybe two.
Now we are back to experiencing slow data transfer speeds internally ( 2GB / hr ) and normal transfer speeds ( 20GB+ / hr ) over the network.
Any ideas on what might be causing the problem would be appreciated

As suggested, do check for other I/O load on the spindles. And check for general system load.
I don't know of a good GUI in-built I/O monitor here (and particularly for Tiger Server), though there is iopending and DTrace and Apple-provided [performance scripts|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1992] with Leopard and Leopard Server. top would show you busy processes.
Also look for memory errors and memory constraints and check for anything interesting in the contents of the system logs.
The next spot after the controllers (and it's usually my first "hardware" stop for these sorts of cases, and usually before swapping the motherboard) are the disks that are involved, and whatever widgets are in the PCI slots. Loose cables, bad cables, and spindle-swaps. Yes, disks can sometimes slow down like this, and that's not usually a Good Thing. I know you think this isn't the disks, but that's one of the remaining common hardware factors. And don't presume any SMART disk monitoring has predictive value; SMART can miss a number of these cases.
(Sometimes you have to use the classic "field service" technique of swapping parts and of shutting down software pieces until the problem goes away. Then work from there.)
And the other question is around how much time and effort should be spent on this Xserve G5 box; whether you're now in the market for a replacement G5 box or a newer Intel Xserve box as a more cost-effective solution.
(How current and how reliable is your disk archive?)

  • Copy data from one Table to another Table

How can I copy data from one Oracle Table to another Oracle Table on a different server? Question 2: How can I clear all of the data in one Table with a single SQL script?
    Thanks...

    Question 1:
I assume you have the privileges. If you don't, ask the DBA to give them to you. Then
    1. Login to database_source (It could be either the source or the target. Let's assume it's the source.)
    2. Create a database link to database_target: CREATE DATABASE LINK link_to_database_target CONNECT TO myuserid IDENTIFIED BY mypassword USING 'database_target'; Note the single quotes.
    3. Copy the table data: INSERT INTO targetowner.mytable@link_to_database_target SELECT * FROM sourceowner.mytable; COMMIT;
    Question 2:
You have two options, but you may not have privileges for both.
    Option 1:
    DELETE FROM tableowner.tablename; COMMIT;
Advantage: Since this is a DML (Data Manipulation Language) statement, you have to commit the transaction. Also, the data will be gone but the table size is NOT changed, so it's ready for accepting replacement data. DML statements can simply be executed not only from SQL scripts, but from PL/SQL scripts as well.
Disadvantage: Slow, because all record deletion is logged, so you can recover from it by issuing a ROLLBACK; instead of the COMMIT; above. The table size is NOT changed, so if you are short of disk space or tablespace space, you have not resolved the issue.
    Option 2:
    TRUNCATE TABLE tableowner.tablename;
Advantage: Since this is a DDL (Data Definition Language) command, you do NOT have to commit the transaction. (DDL commands automatically commit both before and after their execution.) The table size will be changed back to the initial extent size which is the minimum size a table can have and can only be set when the table is created. If it needs to be changed, the table has to be dropped and recreated with a different initial extent size. The statement execution of this command is not logged, therefore it's much faster then the DELETE.
Disadvantage: No rollback. Being a DDL, this command cannot be executed straight from PL/SQL. If you need to issue this within PL/SQL, you will have to use dynamic SQL.

  • Copying speed of files has slowed down significantly

copying speed of files has slowed down significantly
and if initiate two different copy processes then it slows so much that 1 GB data takes time like it was 15GB

Again, it depends on file types. Sometimes Apple files are not single files but packages of many smaller files, for example the iPhoto Library. Right-click in Finder, if there's "Show Package Contents", then it is technically not a single file.
For simple file transfer from one machine to another per USB drive, it can save some time to zip the data before and after transfer to and from the USB drive.

  • Hp probook 4403s run slowly when copy data

Why do my hp probook 4430s core i3-2330 with 4GB ram, 500GB HDD run slowly while copying data? (tested in win8-64bit, win 7-64 bit, win 7-32bit) My HDD is tested. It is in good condition, no bad sector. When i copy data (between logical drives or external drives), my laptop is running slowly and lad. It runs like a old computer with pentium 4 and ram 500MB. So, when i copy data, i do nothing and waiting it completed.. My old laptop with core2duo and ram 1GB give me both copying data and do another things like browse web easily?
    Please help me solving it.

    Hey mayouly,
While "slow" is a subjective term, I want to give you some things to consider. You may already be aware of these things but I wanted to put the information out there, just in case. Over time, hard drives accumulate data and the more full they are, the more time it will take a to access data, in turn slowing down the copying process. Also as you use your computer, the services running in the background accumulate and can be set to run on start up without you being aware. To check what is running in the background,
Bring up Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) > Click on the Processes tab > Click on the Memory column to put in descending order.
This will put the heavier, resource-hogging processes at the top. Sometimes anti-viruses may have an updater service going, or another 3rd party program may have an updater service running without you knowing about it. Like I mentioned, these processes could be installed set by default to start up when you power on the computer, even if you don't open that program. For instance, after installing iTunes, the applepush (iTunes' updater service) will run every time you power on the computer. This is not the only program that sneaks these services in. Browser toolbars will sometimes do the same thing. You can also check to see what is starting up at power on by using msconfig.
Click the Start button > Type "msconfig" > click "msconfig.exe" > Click the Start Up tab.
Every thing that is checked must start at power on. There may be some unnecessary processes in that list which can simply be unchecked. You'll want to use caution though because something that may look unfamiliar might be a required driver for your computer, like audio or touchpad software. When you're done making changes, Click Apply. It will prompt you to Restart. You should see a difference, if you can get rid of some unnecessary processes running.  Of course, every computer can use a recovery periodically, to clean up the clutter in the registry and get rid of unused applications and processes. You'll need to save your personal files on an external hard drive before performing a recovery because everything on the hard driver will be removed and Windows will be reinstalled.
If you go through these steps and the computer still seems slow, or if the computer has always seemed slow since you got it, you may see an increase in performance by installing additional RAM. If you haven't already used HP System Diagnostics to test your hard drive you will to follow these steps for a Hard Drive test.
    Turn off the computer.
Use one of the following methods:
Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second, until the HP System Diagnostics program opens.
    OR
Turn on the computer and immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup menu opens. Then press F2 .
The System Diagnostics window allows you to run several diagnostic tests. Each test determines if the hardware is functioning properly, and displays an error message and a warranty ID if there is a hardware failure.
I hope these steps help. Let me know if you have any questions. I'll keep an eye out for your reply

  • TimeCapsule security information - READ THIS before copying data!!!!

I bought my TimeCapsule yesterday, spent all night (literally) copying data off some old usb/firewire drives and then was struck by the "Not everyone on my network should have access to all of this stuff!" moment.
I had been reading these posts - and realize that I was going to have to be the one to bite the bullet and experiment with security.  I have it working - and it seems to work just fine.  Here's what I did.
The timecapsule install program guides you through setting the device up. But ... what it does not do (BAD BAD DEVELOPERS!!!!  I want to hit you with the stupid stick!!) is tell you about security.  I assumed, like others that have posted here, that I would be able to set security permissions on different folders just like any other Mac drive. NOPE!  Doesn't work. You have the options at the bottom of "get info" on the drive folder, but .. it doesn't do anything!!!
All is not lost though read on.
Relaunch the airport utility (Applications->Utilities->Airport Utility) select your TimeCapsule device, and this time select the "Manual Setup" button at the bottom of the window.
At the very top you will see a blue disk on the toolbar labeled "Disks".  When you select that you will then have three things to choose from - Disks, FileSharing, and Accounts.  Click FileSharing.
You will see a dropdown called "Secure Shared Disks". By default it will say "With disk password".  Select "With accounts".  You will get a very ominous message that says (paraphrasing here) that if you do this you will loose all existing data on the drive.  You know what?  It means it.  You do.  Gone.  All gone.  I copied data all night - and now I have to do it again. Did I mention how mad I am at the people at Apple and their extreme oversight about this?  The "wizard" should have provided a LOT more information about security - or at least their documentation.  But I digress.
Once you have picked "With accounts" and clicked "OK" on the scary message, select "Accounts".  TimeCapsule will not automatically pick up on the accounts on your mac or anyone elses.  You have to enter them here.  But it's really no big deal, when users connect the first time they can save their info so they don't have to do it again.  Anyway - put in all the accounts and passwords you think you might want - you can add more as needed later.
At this point the utility restarts TimeCapsule.  Once it comes up connect to the drive (select it in finder and then "connect as"). You will be prompted for an account name and password - you know what to do here.
Now here is what you will find.  Remember the disk folder that was visible to anyone and everyone when you first set TimeCapsule up?  Well, it's still there.  But empty (actually, I think the data is still on the drive but you can't see it and I have no idea how to get it back).  It's now, more or less, a "public" folder for everyone to share (that's where my Itunes library will go) And there will be another folder - with your account name on it.  Guess what?  It's private just for you (actually for whoever is logged on with the respective account).  No one else can even see it.  I have been testing this with four different accounts and it works great!  One account will be shared by two people (a collaboration area of the drive) while at the same each will have their own private area (virtual, not physical like a partition) on the drive.
So now I am going to start copying my data (again!!) to the appropriate account folders.  Oh, there is NO admin who can see all of the accounts.
I really hope this helps someone.  I was more than a little frustrated at 4AM this morning and hope I can prevent the same for someone else.
    Have a great day!
    X

The NAS units are Fantom Drives Mega disks. Here are some things you should know:
    Pros:
Dual drive units. Can either be striped to give 1TB or RAID 1 at 500g. RAID 1 doesn't seem to slow them down.
Web interface - Obviously written by Chinese but understandable and functional.
Company support for questions has been ok. I wouldn't say great but probably better than Apple. Twice I was able to talk to a human about how to achieve something.
The iTunes server is virtually automatic. There is a public/music directory. Anything placed in there is automatically served. I decided to point my actual iTunes library to that location. Now when a song is added for any reason the server picks it up immediately.
    Cons:
Power cords are bad. The unit is best left in a remote location where nothing can touch the power cord.
Some people have had failures of these units. I personally have not. They work fine and as advertised.
Because they use a different file system it is possible to have filenames on the Mac that won't work on the NAS. I've run into this. The result is the file simply will not copy over. Change the name and it works. Avoiding key unix chars in the filename helps and keeping it reasonably short.
    My experience:
I have pounded these NAS devices with multiple copies from multiple machines and they just seem to work. Once connected they just continue to remain connected.
Like I said above I point my iTunes directory there. On reboot I have to reconnect to that drive before I start iTunes as I've been too lazy to setup any kind of auto-reconnect. Honestly I don't reboot that much so I haven't worried about it. But once connected iTunes just works perfect.
The accounts seem reasonable secure. I setup an account for a buddy and put some files in it and gave him FTP access. He was unable to get anywhere else but his directory. He could see the other directory names but could not move to them. Same result when he was here locally.

  • Can not copy data within a realtime cube due to combination issues

    Hello all,
I want to use a planning function on a realtime cube in order to copy data from from Co_area CO1 into Co_Area CO2. The Co_Are and the profit center are part of the realtime cube, but not the nav attribute of the profit center.
When I test/run the planning function via a sequence in planning modeller I get an error message: The combination 'CO2/PCxy,#' is not valid, valid is 'CO2/PCxy,abcd': characteristic '0PROFIT_CTR' .
Has this error something to do with the relationship of the master data of profit center and its nav attributes?
    Any help would be great.
    Best regards,
    Stefan form Munich/Germany

I guess this problem is coming because of some wrong combination of records present in cube for controlling area 1. Make the below changes in the planning function. Dont include profit center in the level. Just include controlling area. Create a characteristic relationship of type derivation by master data attributes. Give source char as Controlling area and target as profit center. This will mantain consistency of char. combinations b/w controlling area and profit center in cube for the newly generated records.

    Hi Gurus,
I am unable to copy data using "copy data" in planning web application.
getting an error "MSG_COPY_DATA_OPTIONS_FAILED: An error occurred while running the specified calc script. Check the log for details."
here are the steps I checked:
I checked whether planning and essbase are in sync.
The DBA team says that there was no spikes in memory.
when I take small data set it see data in target but the status in Job Console says processing for the past 45 min.
I was copying only one month of data.
    please help.

I see you must of read the two Oracle Support articles by what you wrote in your post.
Have you checked the essbase app log? also it sometimes help to restart the planning web app when it happens.

When you say "row", do you mean "column"?

Because in this case STATE_1 and STATE_2 are only text of a log file/history.
So I think 1NF isn't really violated and because of performance of the database in this case it's better to put obsolete rows together.
    Why do you think that?
The definition of First Normal Form is that every column of every row contains 1 piece of information, not a variable number of pieces.  Whether or not that data is only text of a log file/history has nothing to do with it.
You might claim you have good reasons (such as performance) for violating First Normal form, but you can't say that you're not violating it.

    Hi
I need to copy data from a table in one database (db1) to another table in another database (db2).
I am not sure if the table exists in db2,,,if it doesnot it needs to be created as well data also needs to be inserted...
How am I supposed to this using sql statements..?
I shall be happy if it is explained SQL also...
    Thanking in advance

How many rows does the table contains? There are manyway you can achieve this.
    1. export and import.
    2. create a dblink between two databases and use create table as select, if structure doesnot exists in other database, if structure exists, use, insert into table select command.
    example:
create a dblink in db2 database for db1 database.
create table table1 as select * from table1@db1 -- when there is no structure present
-- you need to add constraints manually, if any exists.
insert into table1 select * from table1@db1 -- when there is structure present.
If the table contains large volume of data, I would suggest you to use export and import.
