Copying/duplicating CDs/DVDs

I am unable to copy a CD for some reason. If I right click on the CD icon and select "Copy", the machine does nothing. If I select "Duplicate", it gives me the following error - "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code - 8058).
What is up with this? Why am I unable to copy or duplicate?
Jim Reiff

Hi Jim.
You wrote: " If I select "Duplicate", it gives me the following error - "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error code - 8058)."This is a Finder bug. The same problem will occur if you attempt this with a mounted disk image or other mounted volumes.
See "Mac OS X 10.4: Error -8058, unable to eject when trying to copy a disc in Finder," which also contains a link to the instructions you need for duplicating a CD or DVD.
If you select a disc (CD or DVD) or a mounted disk image on the desktop, then attempt to duplicate the selected object using either:
- Finder > File > Duplicate
- The Duplicate choice in the contextual menu of the selected object's icon on the desktop.
Then the problem you reported occurs. If you select the same object in the Sidebar or in Finder > Computer, Duplicate is unavailable by either of the above methods.
The bug is that Duplicate should be unavailable if the selected object (disc, mounted volume, mounted disk image) is on the desktop.
One can duplicate an unmounted disk image using Duplicate in its contextual menu, since that is seen by the OS as simply a file.
To eject a disc or mounted disk image after attempting to Duplicate it, one has to eject it using Disk Utility.
Good luck!

  • Copying/duplicating mini dvds

I've got a mini-dvd camcorder from Sony that, unfortunately, does not have Firewire. I can record onto the following mini-dvd formats: -R, -RW & +RW.
    My questions are:
    (1) As a general proposition, is any one media format better than any other (aside from the ability to re-write)?
    (2) if I pop the minidvd into my iMac (I've got a drawer, NOT slot load), will I be able to simply make duplicate copies to either other mini-dvds or to regular size DVDs so I can distribute to friends and family? Note: I've read the posts about the essential inability to edit the videos so that's not my concern. Rather, I was just wondering whether I can do a straight duplication of the disks.
    (3) If so, what is the process - do I simply drag the contents of the mini-dvd to my hard drive then place the new disk in, drag the contents back to the new disk and burn?
    (4) Is there a software package to simplify matters for me? Toast, perhaps.
Thanks - sorry for the multiple questions but want to make sure my ducks are in a row before Christmas.

  • Getting a New MBP and Want to Understand CDs/DVDs

    Hello-
this might be the wrong area bt I am sure I will hear if it is. If it is, I apologize in advance.
I have never understood all the various kinds of CDs/DVds. One very specific question I have is trying to purchase the correct CD/DVD for making a copy of the Deluxe TechTool, songs, back-up docs (which I have never done but am planing on getting a really durable external drive to mostly send the back-ups to. On to the CDs at Costco and Best Buy I have not fond a sales person who can explain to be what all the various initials mean and which ones are the best to have for saving things and using the same CD for saving additional date of it is not full and if I want to be able to go back and erase some of the date and RW/R-write over it.
the last CDs I purchased, I put a few songs on one and I could not put anything else. Maybe there is an article that focuses on this topic and explains all the various initials but I really need to learn this. Any help would be much appreciated. Also is there a difference in the sound of recorded music when burning music using a CD that I can keep using until it is full and if I want to make it so that I can't (or any of my brothers can't copy over what I have burned on to the CD?) Not sure if that makes sense. Is there a better quality CD that one would use for music only and when the CD is full I would be ale to do something so that this specific CD can't be used again when it is full, and I make it unusable if anybody tries to add or take away from it.
    In advance, thank you.

    Fortuny-
I sent Verbatim an -mail. it was fairly long but they were so-so with it. They helped me some understanding their media storage types. Basically, they do not get into using the initials other companies use to tell if the CD or DVD will take on burn or transfer or multiple, if you can erase and use the CD over again, etc. It sounds like (at least for their CDs) their basic CD will take more than one burn of a song or transfer of some data and still just all them "CD-R."
I have never backed up before and I would like to start doing that. When I started using computers and learned how to back-up, we were using CDs to back-up to. (Took a computer class my first year n college and it was MS-DOS. lol) I guess those days are over. Even the DVD and Zip disc are not used much for back-up anymore.
So, I am thinking of getting a heavy-duty external drive that has some rubber added on the edges and can use USB 2.0 or FW 400 or 800. this is primarily for school (grad degree in architecture and planning)
Do you get your Verbatim media from the website or at another store locally?
You satisfied with the quality? (Obviously, but still would like to hear your opinion about that.) Have you used their Music CD (I forgot the exact name)
    Thanks again!

  • Copy Protected CDs and iTunes - long but important

Hey all, I didn't search all the posts but I haven't seen much mentioned about this topice so I thought I would bring it to your attention. If this is a repeat, I apologize.
The basic issue is this: some new CDs (especially from Sony) have a program on them that loads on the computer and will only allow you to load the songs as WMA files. This happened to me when I bought a copy of Switchfoot's new cd. It says right on the back that it will only work with Media Player but hey, I wasn't paying attention. Apparently this is not an issue is you are using a Mac.
Anyhow, you cannot load these CDs into iTunes and therefore cannot load them onto your iPod. This has created a huge controvery over on the Sony boards and if you follow the link I will give you, you can see it. Switchfoot is a very popular band and a lot of people got hammered over this. I was lucky enough that my Christian store took the opened cd back after I explained the problem and I had to download it from the iTunes store. You lose a song this way but what can you do. I guess the new album by Cold Play is the same way but I am not a fan so I can't be sure.
If you follow the Sony posts, when you get to the 6th page (I think), one of the members of Switchfoot posted and gave us a few ways to get around this. If you have NEVER put one of these copy protected cds into your drive, you do not have the software on your computer yet. He describes a program you can download and then use it after you put the cd in the drive. If you have inserted one of the cds, the little program is hiding somewhere on the computer and that fix will not work.
You can copy it to Media Player, burn it to a cd, and then load it to iTunes. But.........here you are making copies of copies and are going to lose sound quality. How much and will it be noticable, I have no clue.
Someone on the board said Sony is aware of the uproar and will have a version of iTunes that will be able to import these cds sometime in November (it is actually Apple that is doing I would guess). It all started because Apple refuses to give some kind of code to the large labels so they made the copy protection so iTunes will not recognize the cd (no matter how many time you put it into your drive......believe me I tried over and over on Tuesday until I found the Sony boards by doing a Google).
If this is news to you all, I am glad. If a repeat, sorry but I wanted to make sure all iPod owners (especially those of us with PCs) to be aware of this. There is a small alert near the spine of the jewel case that says "Copy Protected" or something like that and then on the back on the bottom it talks about only being able to use in Media Player.
Some who pre-ordered the disk online did not get the cd with the protection and apparantly some got some copies in retail stores that didn't have it also. I looked at all 400 copies the Christian store I bought it from had and they were all protected. Switchfoot is a Christian rock band but have had tremendous success crossing over into the rock genre.
One last thing, I guess the Dual Disk version will work in iTunes., at least that was the latest I had read.
Here is the link to the Sony Board on this topic and if you all can't find the one post about how to get around this, let me know and I will find it and post it here for you.
    http://forums1.sonymusic.com/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/716102313/m/1331071454/p/1
Good luck. I don't know how to make the links work on this board but you can copy/paste it into your browser window.
Hope this helps some of you,
    Mike

After using Macs for a number of years at both school and work, I finally ordered an iMac G5 of my own. When the DualDiscs came out I bought a few because I wnated all the content I could get. Attempting to play them on my iMac at work however, proved problematic. The audio side would spin for a few seconds then eject. I was slightly annoyed, but settled for playing the DVD audio versions of the albums as I worked. In my car stereo, the audio would work, but any other player it would not.
When my personal iMac came, I expected the same problem- only the DVD side would play. Imagine my surprise when every DualDisc I attempted to rip (Switchfoot, Bruce Springsteen, Rob Thomas, Ben Folds, The Wallflowers, Oasis, David Gray) in iTunes was read and successfully ripped.
So I wonder this- is it as much a problem with older Superdrives not being able to read the thicker discs as anything else?
    Or am I an anomaly

  • Need to copy video from dvd to be able to email

I am a realtor and have a video of a sewer scope on dvd. How can I copy this onto my Mac so I can email it to the other realtor in a size that can be emailed?

This is probably the wrong forum to ask this in since this forum is dedicated to non-Intel-based Macs.
    That being said...
I can not guarantee the following will work, but you can give this a try.
I will assume that the movie on the DVD is not copyrighted.  Put the DVD into your optical drive.  IF iDVD starts up, File Quit it from the Top Menu.  IF the DVD has not appeared on the Desktop (it should look like a CD/DVD), click on a blank spot on your desktop so that the word Finder appears next to the Apple in the top left corner of the screen.  Click on the word Finder, scroll down to Preferences, and open the Preferences.  A window will open, click on General at the top of that window. Under Show these items on the desktop, check the box by CDs, DVDs, and iPods.  The DVD should now be visible.
Double click on the DVD icon, and a window will open, showing all the contents of that DVD.  If the movie you want is the only thing on that DVD, click, hold, and drag it over and drop it on your hard drive icon.  A copy of the movie will be made on your hard drive.  If there is more than one movie, or movies and pictures, you can copy all of them, or hunt until you find the movie you want.
If the movie file is too large to easily e-mail, download the program FLV Crunch (Google it).  When you open FLV Crunch, at the top of the window to left you can see a button labeled Format to convert the movie into a different format.  I suggest .mp4.  On the top right of the window, under Resolution, uncheck the box keep original value.  Down below that, under the tab Presets, select iPhone.
Now, click on the button Add.  A window will open, click on you hard drive, select the movie you copied to there, and click the button Open.  The movie should now show in the box to the bottom right on the Converter window.  Click on the Start button, and FLV Crunch should now begin to convert the movie.  A progress status in percentages, should appear next to the movie in the box.  When it's done converting, it will say done.  Click the Remove button, to remove it from FLV Crunch window.  Theoretically, and I say theoretically as I have never tried it, the converted movie should now be a smaller file, and more easily emailed.
    Good luck.

  • The burnt CDs\DVDs recognised as blank discs in Vista

    Hi,
I have upgraded my OS from Windows XP to Windows Vista and after that I have not been able to play any of the CDs\DVDs which have been burnt. As soon as I put in these CDs\DVDs, these are recognized as blank and the asks me if I want to burn them (although burn process also fails).
I am able to play the original media like the Audio CDs and the DVDs.
I was able to play any of these when I had XP. These also work on my computer and other laptop which has Vista installed.
I have also uninstalled Nero from my machine. Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Rajat,
I am also facing the same problem. My Laptop is still under warranty, so I got the DVD Driver changed, yet the problem persists.
I have a software CD which I copied using Nero on Windows XP on My desktop, then played it in Windows Vista on my Laptop. It was working fine for almost over 7 months, but suddenly after series of updation on Windows Microsoft, now the driver shows the same CD completely blank. After this I found that all CDs that I wrote using Nero on Windows XP, all those CDs are not working on my Laptop, Vista enabled.
Still am searching for the solution. And obviously I do not want to switch back to Windows XP now.
    anyone has a solution?

  • CD Revolution for Burning CDs/Dvds

I don't like using disc utility, I follow the directions and it never works correctly to copy a cd. Seems like too much work. So I found CD Revolution, I downloaded the "Trial" version and it won't let me try it. The "Buy Now" thing pops up when the program opens and won't go away. I can't try out the software. Any suggestions? Are they just making you buy it right away now???

    irvineswimgirl,
What kind of "CD" are you trying to burn? Disk Utility is great for burning data CDs and DVDs, but it cannot copy audio CDs. If that's what you're trying to copy, there's your problem.
The tool to use in making backup copies of audio CDs is iTunes. Import the tracks from an audio CD into iTunes, place those tracks in a "Playlist," then burn the Playlist to a new, blank CD. Voila!

  • Copying previously burned DVDs

I can copy previously burned DVD's on my Mac mini through disk utilities, but my mother-in-law can't on her new iMac flat screen. Is there another way to copy them on her iMac? Is there another program she needs to use?

I have copied my CDs into iTunes  (currently running v11) to play on my iPod.  I have now bought a non Apple mp3 player to use when I am out running.  How can I copy the many tracks I want from iTunes onto the new player?
    Thanks

I tried Notpod but can't get it to work.  Part of the problem, I suspect, is that I can't create a folder on my player (a SanDisk Clip+).  I also can't do this in Windows Explorer.  Whilst I can see the Clip+ in Explorer, the option to create a new folder isn't there.
The error mesag I get in Notpod is:
"Unhandled exception has occurred in your application.  If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.  If you click Quit the application will close immediately.
InvalidArgument=Value of '0' is not valid for 'SelctedIndex'. Parameter name: SelectedIndex"
Then, when I plug the Clip+ into a USB port, iTunes thinks it is my iPad - which is because, I guess, Notpod hasn't worked.
I can drag and drop files from the Music folder where my iTunes tracks are stored onto the Clip+ and they get converted but I'd rather synchronise a Playlist from iTunes if I can.
    Thanks anyone who can help

  • Making a copy of a dvd

I created a dvd of some analog home videos using IMovie and IDVD.  I would now like to make extra copies of the dvd I have made.  I followed the steps outlined in Disk Utility Help.  After I created the the disk image I ejected the original DVD, selected the disk image, then Burn, then inserted a blank DVD. However, after burning, DVD player cannot play the disk.  The error message I get is SUPPORTED DISK NOT AVAILABLE.  I've repeated this process three times and now have three unplayable DVDs.   What am I doing wrong?  I am using MAC OS 10.5.8 on my Imac.

Sometimes the drives are sensitive to the certain brands of DVDs. Exactly what DVD's are you using? I've found the easiest (it's time consuming though) method is to create a folder on the desktop then copy the original DVD's files and pasting them into the folder. After all are copied select all the files and folders (Command A) the right click and select Burn. I've also found it's best to have a bland DVD already in the drive when I select Burn.

  • Copy of Install DVD Question

So I've read the topic about making a copy of the Family Pack DVD for other people that went in on it with you, and I understand it. However, I'm wondering that if I make a copy and there are still 3 installs left, could they, unbeknownst to me, give it to somebody else have it work for them or would it only work once?

Assuming you are not kidding about a copy of a DVD somehow knowing it has been used once and then refusing to be a DVD any more, there is a risk they'd copy the copy and share it so if you have family members like that don't copy it at all.
Note if the others that went in on it are not immediate family you cannot use the family license at all.

  • CDs, DVDs, disk images won't appear in Sidebar or on Desktop

    Hello,
Brand new iMac 2.16, right out of the box.
CDs, DVDs, and Disk Images won't appear on the desktop or in the Sidebar. Nothing is shown over the horizontal gray line at the top of the sidebar, no Macintosh HD, Servers, etc. Disk Images are fully functional, ie Disk Utility recognizes and mounts them just fine.
I checked Mac Help and followed its instructions:
    (1) In Finder preferences:Pane:General, all 'Show These Items on the Desktop' boxes are checked.
    (2) In Finder preferences:Pane:Sidebar, I checked all boxes under "Show These Items in the Sidebar. BUT these changes are NOT retained. After I close the Preferences, the Sidebar does not change. If I re-open the Sidebar preferences, the relevant boxes are now unchecked, as if I'd never done a thing.
Restarting was the only way to fix the problem. Thereafter, the upper items in the Sidebar (Macintosh HD, external drives, iPod, CDs) sometimes SPONTANEOUSLY disappear. They still show up on the desktop, but tweaking the Sidebar preferences is again ineffective. Restarting is the only solution.

  • Copy photos from DVD to Mac?

I would like to copy photos from DVD to Mac computer anyone know how to do it.

If the DVD was made on a Mac and they're JPEGs they should openable in Preview from the DVD. If so, just select them and drag them into a new folder to copy onto your hard drive. If the Mac doesn't recognize the DVD and it doesn't mount in the finder window or on the desktop, I'd say you're out of luck. But there are work arounds possible and too many to discuss without knowing a lot more about your setup and the DVD.
