Copying files failed. An unknown error occurred (-50)

I currently have a PC (Samsung Q330 running Windows 7) and I am getting a Macbook Pro in a few days! Therefore I am transferring my iTunes (10.6) library to an external hardrive (Hitachi X250). While I was doing this I received an error message that read “Copying files failed. An unknown error occurred (-50)”. Therefore I was wondering, how the heck do I fix this???
What I have done.
I have gone in to “Advance Preferences”.
I have changed the “iTunes Media folder location” to my external hardrive.
I have the following two option selected “Keep iTunes Media folder organized” and “Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library”.
Then I go to File> Library> Organize Library. Then I select “Consolidate files” then I press the “OK” button.
Then about half way in or so I get a pop up that reads “Copying files failed. An unknown error has occurred (-50).
As you can see iTunes is not working. Could anyone help me???
Thanks in advance, Donald Louch!

Hmm... you may find iTunes is still connected to some files in the original location rather than the new one. You can check with my script Unconsolidated. If that is the case the script ConsolidateByMoving ought to switch the connection to a file already in the correct place however I'm currently working on a new build so the behaviour of the live version might be slightly different.

Can't consolidate my library.  Any clue as to the fix?

Do you have a line number? The script prossibly makes an unjustified assumption that the Album Artist field always exists though I thought I'd covered that one.
Looking at the script there are two locations where the value of .AlbumArtist is read - the second one shouldn't ever cause an error. The first one has never done so for me, but I suppose it is possible if the "first" track in your library isn't a standard audio track...
If the error line is 143 would you mind adding the following line of code before the current line:
    If I=1 Then MsgBox .Name    ' (letter i = numeral 1)
Can you find the object with that name in the library, and if so what kind of object is it?

The above you are talking about refers to instructions for Snow Leopard (10.6) and you did post in the Snow Leopard forum area.
Your system profile confirms you are actually using Lion (10.7.1).  Therefore, you should seach for Lion instructions in the Apple's Knowledge Base or post over in the Mac OS X v10.7 Lion forum area.

  • HT1152 the attempt to burn the disc has failed, An unknown error occured (4310)

    Help,
i have a new laptop running windows 8.  I am unable to burn a Audio CD from my itunes purchases?

I have the latest version of ITunes. I have the latest hardware drivers for my motherboard, bios, HP Dvd740i, my ata, my chipset, my printer, my scanner, my graphic card, and my sound card. I have used the most expensive CD-R's, CD-RW's, the cheapest CD-R's. I've used Verbatim, Memorex, HP Litescribe and various others and yet It still crashes my CD's about 10 secs in and gives the same error. I am down $$ and patience.. I cannot get one individual at apple, but I have been through pages of script and none answer the problem. I see that many other's are having the same problem on different types of CD writer hardware. Yet the end result is the same. Someone in Apple needs to get off their butt and find an answer and fix the problem or I'm referring all to find a different download source.

Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

  • ITunes library consolidation error: "Copying files failed. An unknown error occurred (-50)."

My iTunes library has outgrown the HDD on my iMac, so I've started to migrate it over to a Synology NAS.  The iTunes Media folder is set to the NAS, but when I attempt to consolidate the library the operation fails each time with the error: "Copying files failed. An unknown error occurred (-50).
I have found this references to this error in the communities from Windows users, but I only use Macs.

Just trying to give this topic a poke as I am having a similar issue.
I am rebuilding my library that was on an external drive.  I had a backup of much of the files, but not a direct backup of the iTunes media folder, as well I am now moving it to a new iTunes Media directory on a Synology 1813+ NAS running DSM 4.3 vs. a USB attached drive.
I have followed all of the correct procedures to move the media directory by using the tools within iTunes, and that all worked perfectly.
So far iTunes has been able to locate most of the music files through its own processes. Once it completed that process I then initiated "Consolidate files" to move the found files to the new iTunes Media directory on the new NAS.
I am led to believe that the issue is with a specific file that causes the copy process to stop, but I don't know how to capture what file it might be.
I am not seeing anything relevent in the console log.
Hoping someone can throw me some ideas...

I can't think of anything else left to try, when I d/c on my computer it doesn't bring up my ipod but under device manager its there, says its working properly

This is the same thing that just happened to me. My error message reads as follows: "Attempting to copy to the disk "C's IP" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to". I've reset and restored. It still will not add the last 3 songs that I have purchased from Itunes. I have completely read the manual and can't find anything that deals with this problem. • Consolidation error "Copying Music failed. An unknown error occurred (-51)

I want to Consolidate my large music library and add all of the songs from my MacBook to my new, much larger iTunes music folder, which is on a Buffalo Terastation NAS, so that I may easily back them up. When I "Consolidate", I immediately get an error message that says "Copying Music failed. An unknown error occurred (-51)."
Has anyone else experienced this and knows how to fix it? I can't seem to find a fix for that error code.

Error # 51 means that the Buffalo Terastation NAS is unreachable on your local network.

Look at this Apple Article about how to Consolidate the iTunes Library ... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
If you follow the steps in this link I think that it should work. But first you must setup the Hard Drives as a 'Bootable GUID Partition Table' with 'Owners' & 'Journaling' Enabled in order to retain the iTunes users permissions.
    Good Luck.

    Hello there, Wyrzezbiator.
The following Knowledge Base article offers some great steps for the very issue you're describing:
Resolve specific iTunes update and restore errors
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694#4
    Configure your security software
Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006, 9807, or 9844. Sometimes as a result of this issue, a device might stop responding during the restore process.
Check your security software and settings, which can block ports and prevent connection to Apple servers during update and restore.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
