Copying files need "permission" to be transferred?

Alright so I lost one macbook but all my files were backed up.  When I go to retrieve them with a new macbook I can see all of them (their HD movies about 120) my plan was to plug the laptop into the time machine for a fast transfer of the hd movies to the macbook itself.  That works and I can see all 120 movies.
Next I plug the laptop into a windows computer and share the folder with all the movies so the windows computer can copy them...Not to long into the copy process the movies a majority can't be copied and I have to skip them while others are being transfered because I "need permission from (laptops name then few random looking numbers/letters)"
Only 44 of the 120 movies were transfered sucessfully to the windows computer.
I need help please, thanks guys!

When you copy files from a TM to a different computer from the original the file permissions can be messed up.. there are several ways to fix it.. the simplest I found was to simply copy the files from one location to another .. a separate partition or drive would be better.. even back to the TC as a file.. and let the windows computer then pick it up from there.. If the files were purchased then the copyright may stop you copying. Or at least opening it.. the movies that you cannot copy.. can you actually open and play them on the Mac??
I found pondini's knowledge base enourmously helpful doing this stuff.
http://pondini.org/TM/5.html
Actually there is s whole lot in the FAQ about recovery.. but disk permission is also there.
I have copied corrupted backup to another location and been able to recover files from it. It was slow and painful operation but it did work.
Even if the first copy fails .. have another try.. and try moving the copied files back to the TC into a directory created for them.. make sure you don't have users set on the TC and open guest access so the windows computer can copy them.

  • Virtual App needs to copy files

    I'm trying to virtualize a new version of an application that I've been able to successfully virtualize in the past. The new version has a new twist though. The program wants / needs to copy files from c:\program files (x86)\dir1\dir2 to %LOCALAPPDATA%\dir1\dir2. I am able to capture and build the virtual application. When I start the application I get an error which I believe is related to this file copy. Has anyone encountered this before? If so how were you able to get the virtual application to run?

    Short of jailbreaking, there is no way to install an app besides purchasing it from the App Store and either downloading directly to the iPad or syncing through iTunes. Even if you transferred a "safe" app with one of the above methods, none of them can open and execute an app.
    I do not want an app on the iPad end - rather, on the Mac end!
    And I do not want a reader or some internet-based cloud-storage app (like Dropbox, etc.)
    Rather, I want an app on my Mac under OS X that, when I connect the iPad via the usual cable, will give me Finder-like access to all the files on the iPad - so that I can download whatever ones I want from iPad to Mac.
    That was not clear from your post.
    There is no universal app that will bring content from your iPad to your Mac. Nor is there any Mac app that will give you Finder access to the iPad. The very nature of the iOS operating system is that there is no all encompassing folder structure to access like there is in Windows or Mac OS. Each individual app can have ways to export/share content, some of which are cloud-based and some of which can work with iTunes. Many apps also have the ability to save to a cloud storage app (such as Dropbox), export to Evernote, etc.

    *From my own knowledge, it seems that I am having an issue with the permissions of the files. I tried repairing them, but it seems DiskWarrior can't repair the files due to the fact that they are either not repairable or they are missing. I hoping I don't have a hardware issue with my HD cause it seems like the issue can't be fixed via software. I have also tried backing-up my drive with Time Machine, but it won't let me do that either. Here are the things that I have tried up until now on how to fix it, and have failed:*
    1. Reformatted External HDs to be "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
    2. Used DiskWarrior and did a Check & Repair Disk Permissions
    3. Tried manually changing file permissions.
    *If anybody knows how to fix this, besides using the methods I have already tried, please let me know! Thanks!*

    First, the permissions messages are not errors. They cannot be repaired. They are innocuous and can be ignored.
    Second, Error -36 is not a permissions error. Usually it is related to trying to copy files to a non-OS X formatted drive such as trying to copy a file larger than 2 GBs to an MSDOS formatted drive. The error may also arise when the file being copied is corrupted or has a filename with too many characters or a filename using illegal characters.
    The error may occur when trying to sync an iDevice or an iDisk. It also may occur when trying to transfer files from a Mac to a PC over SMB-mounted network storage.
    Error -36 is an I/O error. For more see I-O error -36 « fuzzybrain|daisychain|blogdrain.

  • I need help with copying files in java?

    hi, i use the following code sample to copy a directory structure and its files.
    It copy's the directory-structure, but all the files in it have 0kb as size. except one file.
    Here's the code:
    public static void copyDir(String source, String target)
    String [] listing = new String [0];
    FileReader in = null;
    FileWriter out = null;
    String sourcePath = source;
    String targetPath = target;
    // Maakt directory onder target directory
    File f = new File(targetPath);
    f.mkdir();
    // Maakt filelist van bestanden in source-directory
    f = new File(sourcePath);
    listing = f.list();
    for(int i = 0; i < listing.length; i++)
    f = new File(sourcePath + listing);
    if(f.isDirectory())
    copyDir(source + listing[i] + File.separatorChar,
    target + listing[i] + File.separatorChar);
    else
    try
    in = new FileReader(sourcePath + listing[i]);
    out = new FileWriter(targetPath + listing[i]);
    int t;
    while (-1 != (t = in.read()))
    out.write(t);
    try { Thread.sleep(200); } catch (InterruptedException e) { }
    System.out.println("Copied: " + sourcePath + listing[i]);
    catch (Exception e)
    System.out.println(e);

    Here is a quick copy program that works. You'll need to deal with the exception instead of just throwing it though.
    import java.io.*;
    public class Copy
      private static void copy(String source, String target) throws IOException
        // Create directory
        File file=new File(target);
        file.mkdirs();
        // Get contents
        file=new File(source);
        File[] files=file.listFiles();
        // Copy files
        int length;
        byte[] buffer=new byte[1024];
        for(int i=0; i<files.length; i++)
          String destination=target+File.separator+files[ i ].getName();
          if(files[ i ].isDirectory())
            copy(files[ i ].getPath(), destination);
          else
            FileInputStream in=new FileInputStream(files[ i ]);
            FileOutputStream out=new FileOutputStream(destination);
            while((length=in.read(buffer))!=-1)
              out.write(buffer, 0, length);
            in.close();
            out.close();
      public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException
        copy(args[0], args[1]);
    }[\code]

    I have a new iMac. I have set up a user page for myself, for my wife and an administrator page. My question is my wife needs files from my user page transferred to her page. What's the easiest way?

    I've done this by dragging files from my user page to her drop box. In Finder, drag the required files and hover over the hard disc icon in the navigation bar on the left. As you hover, it will open another finder window showing the contents. Work your way down these windows into <Her username | Public | Dropbox>. Drop the files into the dropbox. She can then retrieve them from her user page.

  • Need to copy files to path that contains a wildcard!??!

    Afternoon,
    I am attempting to copy a set of files to multiple computers on the network (files are at a dfs link, no issue there).
    The destination path on each computer is either:
    "\\$computer\c$\Program Files\AASHTOWare\Trns·port Client-Server PES-LAS"
    OR
    \\$computer\c$\Program Files (x86)\AASHTOWare\Trns·port Client-Server PES-LAS"
    The paths both have a "." in them. It is called a "middle dot" I think. It is centered between the two wordsin the path...When I run test-path it can see the path. However when I attempt to copy files to it, I get the "illegal

    Script is as below ...:-)
    HELP : ....
    winrm s winrm/config/client '@{TrustedHosts="SERVER2"}'
        $Source = "D:\test\ok.log"
        $Destination = "D:\test\ok.log"
        $session = New-PSSession -ComputerName SERVER2
    Set-StrictMode -Version Latest
    ## Get the source file, and then get its content
    $sourcePath = (Resolve-Path $source).Path
    $sourceBytes = [IO.File]::ReadAllBytes($sourcePath)
    $streamChunks = @()
    ## Now break it into chunks to stream
    Write-Progress -Activity "Sending $Source" -Status "Preparing file"
    $streamSize = 1MB
    for($position = 0; $position -lt $sourceBytes.Length;
        $position += $streamSize)
        $remaining = $sourceBytes.Length - $position
        $remaining = [Math]::Min($remaining, $streamSize)
        $nextChunk = New-Object byte[] $remaining
        [Array]::Copy($sourcebytes, $position, $nextChunk, 0, $remaining)
        $streamChunks += ,$nextChunk
    $remoteScript = {
        param($destination, $length)
        ## Convert the destination path to a full filesytem path (to support
        ## relative paths)
        $Destination = $executionContext.SessionState.`
            Path.GetUnresolvedProviderPathFromPSPath($Destination)
        ## Create a new array to hold the file content
        $destBytes = New-Object byte[] $length
        $position = 0
        ## Go through the input, and fill in the new array of file content
        foreach($chunk in $input)
            Write-Progress -Activity "Writing $Destination" `
                -Status "Sending file" `
                -PercentComplete ($position / $length * 100)
            [GC]::Collect()
            [Array]::Copy($chunk, 0, $destBytes, $position, $chunk.Length)
            $position += $chunk.Length
        ## Write the content to the new file
        [IO.File]::WriteAllBytes($destination, $destBytes)
        ## Show the result
        Get-Item $destination
        [GC]::Collect()
    ## Stream the chunks into the remote script
    $streamChunks | Invoke-Command -Session $session $remoteScript `
        -ArgumentList $destination,$sourceBytes.Length
        Remove-PSSession -Session $session

    But have will the script look,  if i need to copy from
    From server2 to server1.
    My script copy from server1 to server2 and working, but I need server2
    to server1.

  • Permission Error when copy files into cmsdk using NFS with non admin user

    Hi All,
    We are using CMSDK with NFS protocol and we have created different users with ACL to control different access for users.
    When we copy files into cmsdk folders using one of the admin user this works fine, even a multiple copy works fine. But when we use any non admin user , some time copy commands works but some time it throw a permission deny error. and this is happening very intermittently.
    when we use ftp protocol and ftp file it's all works fine for the both admin & non admin user. Is there any limitation in using CMSDK NFS protocol
    Did any one encouter any similar issue. Any pointers would be of great help.
    Thanks in advance
