Copying files on NFS shares takes forever. Any suggestions?

I have some shares mounted via NFS, using Lion as a client. The mounting used to work flawlessly under Snow Leopard. In Lion, copying files often takes forever - the little spinning ball appears and it may take up to several minutes to complete a copy operation. The problem appears to be unrelated from the Finder - I have noticed the same when using the terminal to copy files.
Are there perhaps some different settings I should use when mounting the NFS shares?

Hi,
You may try this:
Click Start> Control Panel> Internet Options.
Click Security tab.
Click Local Intranet.
Click Sites button.
Click Advanced button.
Enter the IP Address of the other machine or server and click Add.
Click Close.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

I am no longer able to double click on a file and have it open.  Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Having trouble placing RAW / dng files in idesign 5.5. Any suggestions?
Here's what i've done so far:
    Updated my raw plug in
I shoot on canon rebel t3-i

Open the RAW or DNG file in Photoshop as a Smart Object. Then save as a PSD file. Place the PSD in InDesign with File > Place
InDesign cannot place RAW files. However, if you use the workflow I suggest, you can still edit the RAW/DNG files if needed. To edit, choose Edit Original from the InDesign Links panel, and the PSD image will open up. Then double-click the smart object and it will open in Adobe Camera Raw. Saving the changes in PSD will update them in InDesign.

  • Copy file from SMB share to Desktop permissions

I have connected to a SMB share point (Windows Server)and copy a file to my desktop (Mac OS X 10.6.4).
The file on my desktop shows I have the read and write access, however, everyone has no access.
I could not get the system administrator to change on the server side. Is it possible to make any changes from my machine to make at lease every has read only access?
    Thanks in advance.

I downloaded D2KWUtil from the link suggested by you. It has very nice example demo form. But the documentation provided says following
Using D2KWUTIL in Web Deployed Applications
The use of this library is not supported with Web deployed applications.
In a web deployment scenario not all functions within D2KWUTIL will work. Any function that interacts with the User Interface (such as those in the WIN_API_DIALOG package) will fail.
Any interaction with the O/S by other functions will all be executed on the NT server and will act within, or return information pertinant to, the environment on that machine. For instance GET_COMPUTER_NAME will return the Server’s name, not the name of the computer that the Client browser is running on. Likewise COPY_FILE will copy files in the Forms Server not on the Client.
Functions such as those in WIN_API_BITOP will continue to work without change.
so this will not work in web deployed application.
    Any other suggestion?
    Thanks

  • File encoded with x264 takes forever to load in Encore CS 5.5

I use Encore mostly because it takes h.264 video encoded with the x264 compressor, which provides much higher quality than any other compressor. The problem is that these files take forever to load. For example, right now I'm trying to load a video that is about 1 hour and 20 minutes long, encoded at 38 Mbps, and the file is 20.9 GBytes. Now it's 3 PM and I imported this file along with the AC3 file over an hour ago. The Encore process shows as not responding, but when I open the Windows 7 Resource Monitor, in the disk tab it shows that it's reading the video file at a rate of about 45 MB/s, so I didn't kill the Encore process. I know eventually it's going to stop and load the file, but I don't understand why it takes so long. The encoding parameters that I used in x264 are these:
    x264 --level 4.1 --bluray-compat --preset slow --bitrate 38000 --keyint 30 --min-keyint 2 --open-gop --weightp 0 --slices 4 --vbv-bufsize 30000 --vbv-maxrate 40000 --rc-lookahead 40 --tff --output "output" "input"
This comes from a family video that is 1080 59.94i. This time these two parameters appeared because I selected Blu-ray as the target:  --bluray-compat and --open-gop, which I don't normally use, but still, even when I don't use them, video encoded with x264 takes forever to load. Does anybody here know what could be the problem?

What's weird is last year I encoded a file that was almost two hours long and Encore took it without trouble, although it was CS5, not 5.5. Since I had kept the avs and bat files, and also the x264.exe from that encode, I brought them into the current working folder and I just modified the file names in the avs and bat files to point to the new avi and encode to the new h264 file. So I encoded this file, I imported it into Encore, and it still hangs. Maybe it was a change from CS5 to 5.1 that introduced a problem. x264 has been certified to be Blu-ray compliant since over a year ago, and I already put this file to a Blu-ray with TSMuxer, since it was a family video and I didn't really need menus, and it plays perfectly fine in my Blu-ray player.
But I'm sure there must be something, one or two parameters that would make it compatible. For example, after encoding the file again the last time, now I can import it into Encore, and it doesn't stay frozen forever, but it doesn't show me the video and as soon as I try to move the timeline cursor it freezes and doesn't let me do anything for several minutes. So still it's not usable. But it's a change from the first encode where the progress dialog would be there for several hours and do nothing at all.

  • Files in NFS share not visable

I'm trying to install Solaris 10u4 from a Netra T1-200 install server. The client is a Sun Enterprise 5000, it boots fine during the network install but gives the error "The directory you specified doen not contain a valid Solaris OS image".
If I mount the same NFS share from a Linux box I can see all the files in the Boot directory but there are no files visable in the Tools or Solaris_10 directory. I've verified that they exist on the Netra but the are not visable in the share.
Any help in resolving this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jack

OK, i can replicate it by doing the following on the server:
    <pre>
    # touch test\ file\ one.txt
    # touch test\ file\ one\ two.txt
    # touch test\ file\ one\ two\ three.txt
    # touch test\ file\ one\ two\ three\ four.txt
    # touch test\ file\ one\ two\ three\ four\ five.txt
    </pre>
the last two files (ending in four and five) do not appear in finder.
It seems that if there are 5 or more spaces in a filename the file will not appear.
This seems like a bug doesn't it? how would I go about reporting it to apple?
    Thanks

  • Error -43 when copying to an NFS share

    Hi!
I am using an NFS share. Whenever I try to copy something to it via Finder, I get an error -43 (some object could not be found). When I do a "cp something /path/to/nfs/share" in the terminal, it works fine though. What does the error mean and how do I get rid of it?
    Cheers,
    Arne

One more piece of information: When I try to copy something /out of/ the share, I get an error "insufficient rights". However, doing the cp out of the directory in the terminal, it works. So it seems that Finder somehow completely misinterprets the access rights, wheres apps in the terminal, like cp, mkdir, or mv seem to work just fine!
Please help, since this is totally frustrating. I did not find any error messages in the Console either...

  • Access Denied Errors Copying Files to Network Share

We recently upgraded to Coldfusion MX 7 (7.02 Windows) and
Windows 2003 Server. Now I am getting access-denied errors when
attempting to copy files to a network share (not a mapped drive -
    \\server\share) using <cffile action="copy">. All other file
copy operations work fine. This has been working fine for several
months but broke when we upgraded to MX 7 and Windows 2003. Any
suggestions for a solution would be apprectiated.

I figured out what the problem is in case anyone else is
interested. The Coldfusion Application Server service is by default
set to run as local only. You need to set this service to run under
a user that has access to network resources and rights to the
    destination path.

  • Can not copy files to network share

    Hi everyone.
We have a Windows Server 2003r2 64-bit. There are a few network share on this server and folders with user profiles (we use roaming profile in our infrastructure).
A few days ago some users lost possibility to copy files on any network share on this server. Windows says "Not enough space on the disk", but free space on server is about 12% (100gb). If copy files to other server, everything is OK.
Log on user to another PC didn't help.
If join user to group "Local admin" on server - files copying succesfully.
Creating new folder with FC permissions for this user didn't help.
FSRM role isn't installed, no quotas.
    Anyone ancountered whith similar situation?

    Hi,
It seems that you configure disk quota on users to limit the disk space usage.
Configuring Disk Quotas on NTFS Volumes
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc758877(v=ws.10).aspx
If you configure disk quota on users, users cannot save data on the disk when the users exceed their quota limit. By default, quota limits are not applied to the Administrators local group. Thus, the uses joined to the "Local admin" group don’t have
    the issue.

  • Can't copy files to network share using migrated account

Man this is so bizarre. I got a new MacBook Pro and used the Migration Assistant to copy over everything from the old MacBook Pro. Everything seems to work except I can't copy files to my desktop via a network share.
What's totally bizarre about this is that I can delete and rename files from the network share! I can also drop into the command line and try copying - at first, I get "Operation not permitted", but if execute the command again, it works!
In the Finder, when I try to copy a file, I get a window that says:
"You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named "xxx". If I click stop at this point, a zero-byte file is created on the target machine.
If I click Continue, I get another window that says "The item "xxx" contains one or more items you do not have permissions to read. Do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?
If I click Continue, I get a final window that says "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items".
Note that this also happens in the opposite direction when I connect to my notebook from my desktop.
Also note that this only happens with the account that was migrated. I can successfully copy files if I setup a new account.
I've repaired permission on both machines. My old account on the old MacBook Pro still works fine, btw.
I've seen other posts with people having this problem, but I've yet to see a good solution.

I had the same problem, but I managed to fix it.
In WGM check that the sharepoint of your users Home Folder is set to owner root with Read and Write permissions.
I also created an ard_admin group in WGM and enabled open directory management on the client Macs. (Page 62 of the ARD admin Guide.)

  • Mounting nfs shares takes much longer since updating to 10.3.9

Hi, first post here. The titles of the forums are vague and I hope "getting online" really is the "networking forum"; apologies if not.
I have two linux machines which I regularly mount nfs shares from onto my powerbook. These machines are on the LAN and have known IP's for netinfod so I don't think the following problem is DNS related.
Since the last 10.3.9 update, mounting these shares (via finder or command line mount_nfs) has become very unreliable. Sometimes they never seem to mount, sometimes almost immediately, and other times they mount eventually even though I might of canceled the dialog box waiting for the mount. The logs show:
mount_nfs: bad MNT RPC: RPC: Timed out
The server side logs show only repeated authentication approvals. The servers have not changed software -- only OSX has been updated.
Independent if I use WiFi or a landline.
Once the shares are mounted, there is no detectable connection problems at all. Was any part of the NFS client updated in 10.3.9? Any ideas what might be wrong. TIA.
    12" PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Just to bump this, as no one has chimed in, I found the problem and I will post the fix only if someone asks. It's not stupid, and it might help you. I am surprised that no one cares.
I'd still like to know why you can't launch PS from a bootable backup.

  • Exporting EPS files in InDesign CS3 takes FOREVER!!!

When exporting a file in InDesign it takes up to 10 minutes per page to export a file in EPS form. I am working on a server, but co-workers are doing the same thing and they do not have the same problem. I have noticed that it seems like the files with links in them take the longest. Meaning... if I have just a text file it will export very quickly like it should, but if it has a linked file it will take anywhere from 3 to 10 minutes to export. Does anyone know what's going on?
    -msa818

Can you make the problem go away by working off the network? Just because you're the only one having problems doesn't absolutely mean the network isn't the cause of the problems. And because these kinds of problems come up all the time with people who work from a server, the network is the obvious place to look first.

  • Archiving iMovie (DV files) to data DVD-R? Any suggested program?

I have over 200 Digital8 tapes dating back to 1999 that I know will eventually go bad. I am in the process of importing all of them in to iMovie project files, and I'd like to back up the data to DVD-Rs (so I have the pure DV video; NOT exporting them to MPEG-2 DVD video).
It should take three DVD-Rs (4.7GB) to hold 13GB of DV data (about an hour project) but Apple's BACKUP wants 4 DVDs, so maybe it's not using the discs as well as it could be.
Does anyone know of a program designed for this purpose? Itwould be nice to have some kind of solution to archive these files (three DVD-Rs at less than .50 each is still cheaper than a $5 DV tape). It would be very cool to have a way to keep small scaled down preview vids online and then reference the backup when I want to use them.
For what it's worth, I just added ANOTHER 2 terrabyte drive (four 500GB drives) to my existing 2.6 terrabytes. I don't trust hard drives since I've had three Western Digitals goes bad on me (so now I am using Seagates, Maxtors and Hitachis, with each drive cloned to another in case of failure). I just want to get my data backed up.
    Any suggestions?

I had too many DVDs going bad after short time - I
don't trust them at all for long time storage.
I'd trust optical media over tape any day of the week. Once a tape gets eaten in a camcorder... And it's far easier and quicker to make a .50 backup of a DVD-R (or set of 3 or 4 of them) than dub off another hour-long Digital8/DV tape at much higher cost.
What I do is, that I double the number of hard
drives. I archive my Videos on one and make a copy to
That's what I've been doing ever since I had my first drive die on me a few years ago. So, I currently have 5.6 terrabytes, but that's not enough to have all my video handy. What i'm trying to do is get my video in a safe place that can't be destroyed by a magnet or eaten by an ancient player, and then have it in a way I can easily make backups. I can send a box of DVD-Rs to someone for safekeeping, but I don't plan on cloning 200 tapes (at a cost of a few bucks each) to send to someone. It's alot of stuff.
disconnect it). I figured that chances of both drives
going bad at the same time is slim.
True. I'll not talk about the 10 days I just spent recovering files when a redundant disk system I had of photos got screwed up and both drives were scrambled (Lesson learned; no more RAID arrays, just remember to sync the drives often.)
external RAID and use it in a configuration that can
recover from single disk failures. This is probably
That's what I am working towards but, as I alluded to, a file system can get screwed up and really hose you. I lost all my podcast master files and all kinds of stuff when a file system error on the RAID I was using took out all copies D'oh.
have to double the number of disks. Advantage of
harddrive is also that you have easy access to all
    the movies.
Yes, if you just have a few movies. I'm hoping the 4 500GB drives I have will be enough for this project.
