Copying Files To DVD

Hi,
I hope I'm posting in the right spot; my apologies if not.
I'm rather clueless. I have pictures (.jpg) files that I want to copy from my iMAC to a DVD that will be loaded on a Windows PC to be viewed there, but cannot figure this out.
I tried following instructions I found online and failed miserably. I have wasted 2 DVDs already.
Assume I know very little if anyone is willing to give me instructions on how to do this or a link to such instructions.
Thank you for your time.

Thank you so much for replying. I went further than usual, but got stuck:
I went to the KB on how to burn data dvd-r disc http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1479
I never got the info on step two to show as stated by the KB:
2. In the dialog box that appears, enter a name for the disc and choose the format you want to create. An icon for the DVD appears on the desktop.
I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L30) so the KB should apply.
I did get the following window when I insert the dvd in the iMAC's:
"You inserted a blank DVD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click ignore." I chose "Open Finder" (I have version 10.5.8)
In Finder, the DVD shows to the left under DEVICES and also under PLACES with the yellow and white circle next to it to burn it.
I'm able to rename the DVD to what I want, but nowhere in the menus or Command/Click do I find anything that would allow me to choose the format.
I don't know what to do from here.
I'll check on the other venues, but it seems daunting from here and Disk Utility which I know can format if I could only figure out how, but this last one is quite complicated for me. I understand I have to format FAT something so it's portable.
Any further help on the KB would be appreciated which seems rather simple if only I could find the format part.
Thank you so much for the help so far.
ETA:
The hatter said: Burn folders. Copying files to a DVD, they get written later when you eject. You've tried something along those lines?
To answer your question, I'm glad you mentioned the eject part. As far as burning folders, no, I used disk utility and it wound up to be so convoluted (for me) that I am not even sure what happened in the end. I'm running out of DVDs and they're not cheap.
Thanks gain.

  • Copying files to DVD+R

I have a macbook and am using some DVD+Rs to back up some files. Every time I drag files to the DVD it only makes a shortcut copy and not a regular copy. Therefore I've had to actually push the copy button and paste each file onto the DVD. That then brings my memory down (which I have little of). Can someone PLEASE tell me how I can copy files directly to a DVD without losing memory..THankS!

  • Copying files from DVD?

I have a wedding DVD with some dance clips on it, I don't want to copy the entire DVD, but just want to copy the dance clips from the DVD on to my imac as a media file, what is the easiest way to do this?
Please someone help because I have to return the DVD back to my friend, thanks.

No need to import the entire dvd. I suggest you use this to first convert to QT file that can then be used within iMovie or iDvd (your choice):
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.products.htm
Keep in mind that a dvd is normally considered a finished product (not to be edited thereafter). Hence, you may experience some loss in quality when converting back to QT since these files have already been compressed at least once into mpeg-2 format.
You can give the trial version a shot prior to purchasing (just to see if the app will indeed work for what you want it to do). Hope this suggestion helps but if not just come on back.

Hmm, this was originally posted in Jan 2006, so the OP might not be back to see this, but there is an obvious problem that jumps out from the first post. The OP is using a DVD/CD-RW drive, NOT a DVD-RW/CD-RW combo drive.
A DVD/CD-RW drive only _READS_ DVDs, it is incapable of writing to DVDs no matter what software you use.
If you want to burn to a DVD, you must have a DVD-R/W drive (these usually also burn to CD-R and CD-RW)

  • Can no longer copy files between internal drives or from burned DVD's

This just started today as far as I can tell. We have 4 dual 2.7GHz G5's running 10.4.4. Two of them seem to work as normal. The other two won't let me drag/copy files from one of the internal drives to the desktop or the other internal.
We have two internal drives, the one with OSX on it that works fine as in I can copy/drag files to the other internal drive (labeled "AV") or to the desktop. The AV drive won't let me copy/drag any files to the desktop or the other internal, I get the circle with a line through it. Also when I burn a DVD I can't copy/drag the files anywhere on any drive. If I put a previously burned disk (burned prior to today) in I can copy it fine to any drive.
I have verified/repaired all disks, repaired permissions, and checked read&write permissions.
    Any help?

OK, I figured it out (I'll admit to being a Mac n00b). I was using DVD+R's. So the act of trying to copy files from a DVD+R (even though it was burned in the same G5) changes something in the drives so nothing on them will copy.
Ejecting the DVD+R and restarting without the disk in it got it back to normal. The problem was reproduced when I tried the DVD+R again (just to confirm the issue and solution). Again a restart fixed it.
Moral of the story, don't use DVD+R in Macs even though they can burn to them.
Anyway, if anything hope this post can help other n00bies.

  • Can't copy files to archival gold DVD-Rs

I could use a little help. For some reason I am unable to copy files from my computer to Delkin archival gold DVD-Rs. My computer has 2 Optiarc DVD RW-AD 7170As. I have no trouble copyfing files using other CDs or DVDs. The archival DVDs can be used without problems on my MacBook. Would appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks.

Well, I could probably locate another manufacturer's archival DVDs...but it just seems odd that the ones I have work just fine in my laptop but not on desk top.

  • Cannot copy file (From external HD, DVD, server) - iTunes 6

Yesterday I've updated iTune to 6 and de facto Quicktime to 7.0.3.
Just after this upgrade, I remark that I cannot copy files, using the finder, from external hard disk, dvd drive and network drive. During the drag, I've got the circle indicating that I can't copy.
I can copy files only from my main hard disk to this one or others.
(Note: With terminal applications I can copy theses files).
Anyone else have this problems... or a explanation/solution.
    Thanks

I reinstall iTune 6 and now everything is ok

  • Copying hangs when copying large files from DVD

I'm having trouble copying large files (>2GB) from DVDs to my built-in hard drive. When I drag the file icon from the DVD window to the desktop, the progress bar pops up almost immediately, and says "0 KB of 2.3 GB copied" and "Estimated time left: 1 minute" -- and then it just sits there, doing nothing. In some cases, after five minutes or so of inactivity, the copy finally begins... but most of the time it never does. Force-Quit doesn't help; the only way out is to do an emergency restart and try again.
This problem began when I upgraded to Tiger, and several members of my office group have been experiencing the same problem on their own computers as well.
I've poked around the forum looking for answers but the only thing I could find that looked related was a conflict between iSight and some third-party external hard drives... but none of us have iSight, and none of us are using third-party external drives, so clearly that's not the issue we'rehaving.
    Any help out there?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Michael, I occasionally notice anomolous behaviour when files get dragged between volumes. Mostly the copying window shows an accurate and immediate indication of what's going on, but other times it just looks like nothing's happening, the display never changes, yet, it is in fact copying the files over. Now, if you're copying 2gb files from DVD to HD, it's gonna take some time, more than 5 minutes, so I'm wondering how long you've left it before forcing it to quit?

  • Cannot copy files from CD or DVD using Finder.

    Hi,
I cannot copy files and folders from a CD or DVD to my home folder or any folder therein using Finder. I just get the "Not Permitted" symbol next to the mouse pointer when I try to drag a folder out of the CD (or DVD) to my home folder.
I have checked that I have sufficient permissions to perform this operation and when I copy files from the CD or DVD using the command line, it works without any hassles.
This is extremely strange and I cannot think of why it should happen.
A solution would be most welcome as I would prefer not to have to drop into a command line when I have to copy files from CDs or DVDs.

I am experiencing the same problem: after undoing a copy in the Finder from my CD-drive to my Seagate 200GB FW-drive, I am no longer able to copy single files in the Finder from other drives than my harddisk. I can copy from my hard disk to my external harddisk, I can move and copy files within the harddisk, but I cannot copy from my external hard drive or my CD/DVD-drive to my harddisk or from my CD/DVD-drive to my external hard drive or the internal harddisk.
What is increasingly weird, is that I can easily copy two or more files using drag and drop! I also get a nice green + sometimes when trying to move the files, but there is just no response.
    I have tried the following:
    0) rebooted.
    1) rm com.apple.finder.plist + killall -9 Finder
    2) done that in the finder using cmd-alt-esc to kill the finder.
    3) removed cache files using Yasu from http://jimmitchelldesigns.com/yasu.html, including rebooting
    4) Doublechecked permissions, including locked bits
    5) run periodic everything from the Terminal
    6) repaired permissions
    7) checked the hard disk using disk utility
    8) Logged in as another admin user to no avail.
I can use the Terminal to copy the files without any problems, and I can open files in other applications and save them where ever from there, but the Finder refuses to let me.
May Gods wrath kill the Finder for good! I certainly hope 10.5 will show a new Finder!

  • I cannot copy files from CD's and DVD's to the hard drive

I am running a G5 with OS X 10.4.8. I cannor copy files from the CD's and DVD's in the DVD-ROM drive to the hard drive. However, I can copy files from the USB floppy drive to the hard drive with no problem. What happened? Is this just a glitch? Will the problem be fixed if I just restart my computer?

I just formatted my G5 tower, installed the 10.4.8 combo updater, and now my DVD drive will not let me copy files from a CD or DVD to my computer. I can read the files for the disk, I can choose "archive" and get them onto my computer that way (very time consuming - I have to copy ALL of my files back onto my HD), and I can burn disks. All I cannot do is drag files from the disks to my HD. When I try, I get a grey circle with a line through it, not the green + I should be getting.
I have tried: updating my DVD drivers, reinstalling the system (I'm on 10.4.0 now and it still doesn't work), and clearing the PRAM.
Judging by you having the same problem, this has to do with the 10.4.8 update. %#$&!

  • Copied Files From CD/DVD Locked

    Hiya folks,
When i copy files from a data cd/dvd to my home partition they are locked and can only be modified by root. How do I gain permission?
    Thanks
    Andy

Ghost1227 wrote:if only root can edit a file stands to reason that only root can change permissions on it!
I would say a user can change rwx-permissions without su/sudo as long as (s)he is the owner of the file(s).
I just tried it. Copying a file from cdrom wrote the file with these rights: -r-xr-xr-x and my useraccount as the owner. So I can use 'chmod +w' without su/sudo to make the file writeable.

  • Copying pdf file to DVD/CD

Please detail all you have done to resolve your issue. Need this information so that the users can avoid the +"been there, done that"+ scenario type responses. This is to avoid repeating the troubleshooting you may have already tried. Thank you.
Regarding the KB Article the OP posted, sometimes if you repair permissions and restart your computer, your DVD/CD will appear on your desktop if that is your problem.

  • Can no longer move or copy files between drives (not a newbie issue!)

Copying and moving files between internal and external devices, and external to external devices is no longer working.
*For the first time in my life, I get a "Circle with a Bar through it" when attempting to move or copy files.*
This doesn't happen between the two internal drives at all (though I'm worried it might start). It happens between two HFS+J devices as well as HFS+J and FAT32 devices. I can delete files, create folders, and in some instances where things are acting funny, copy to, but not from the device. A noticed side effect that is now happening is that I can no longer move drive icons (CDs, DVDs, HDs) to their upper-right hand corner position on the desktop, if they didn't start there. They don't drop there, just staying where they originally sat (under a list of desktop shortcuts and files). It does not matter if the drives are USB or Firewire, and this never happened previous to about a month ago.
I have done all the basic stuff -- verify/repair drives, reboot multiple times, mount & dismount, change connection ports, backed up-reformatted-and restored the smallest drive, fixed preferences (not at all relevant), Disk Warrior repair the devices, set all permissions to R/W, check all device related infos, researched on-line for a week... Nothing. I have even taken the devices to PCs, where they work perfectly, and as expected.
This issue is apparently either a corruption, or a bug induced by Software Update, in the part of the system that handles files and file structures, or possibly the _USB and Firewire_ interfaces.
I just need to know where all those relevant parts are in the system folders, so I can attempt to restore them from a backup previous to the last "Software Update," (to be sure. And to bring this one step closer to being solved).
A system restore really is not an option, as that would require nearly two weeks of re-tweaking everything from the system to every piece of software included (updating the system about 10 times via software update, reinstalling 90% of the actual software packages... and then updating those multiple times, looking-up all the serials that get killed, etc.)
I have to correct this fast, as we need to move the files from the work drives to the archive drives before we run out of room. So any help would be very appreciated... even if you only know where a few of the system components are located (it just might be one of those, causing the issue).
    ---TIA

    {The last link in this post is most relevant, except for your recent finding.}
The reference was to the User permissions, per each; as when these
become corrupted, the simple 'repair disk permissions' and other
basic duties do not find an error with them. That is because there is
nothing really wrong with them from that standpoint.
Another odd error can happen if one is resizing partitions in an Intel
based Mac, and also if one has or had a BootCamp partition and
wanted to reclaim space. But not always. Thankfully, the only time
I tried Windows on a Mac, the media install disc was corrupted so
it just didn't happen. That was Virtual PC and Windows on PPC.
Tiger brought with it the ability to non-destructively resize partitions.
However, it was not thought to be successful in non-Intel based Macs.
The discussion on that matter came up a few years ago, so someone
has undoubtably tried that in a PPC and reported findings online.
When file sharing between user-account created content runs amok,
then the system(s) will not allow the content to be moved or shared.
So, if any shared user-account created content (including drives
initialized or handled without permissions ignored, clones wrong,
etc) are not the problem, then how does one explain these wrong
ful action circles-with-lines, or action disallowed warning symbols?
There must be a simpler answer. Do you have cats which have
access to your computers in the off-hours? They do keyboard.
Some have been thought to have technical skills outside of the
usual coy and cute play-acting people think they are limited to.
I'm sticking to the cats theory for now; the time is 3:21AM here
and I only am up to get a drink and look outside at +5°F. calm.

  • Copying files either very slow or doesn't work at all

I've tried copying files from a DVD to an external drive, and from one external drive to another, and I've been running into troubles on my Mac Pro, namely, I get an error code 36 (corrupted files) and the copying process hangs, requiring me to reboot. However, I was able to copy the files from the DVD to my laptop HD, so I don't think that corrupt files is the problem. After rebooting my Mac Pro, I was able to copy files from one external drive to another, but it was incredibly slow (about 1GB per hour), and I was still unable to copy files from the DVD to an external drive. I've verified all the disks with Disk Utility, and I've repaired disk permissions on my Mac Pro HD but apparently need to re-run since when I verify permissions again, I'm still getting a lot of errors or comments like "Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/rlogin" has been modified and will not be repaired". Scanning my Mac Pro HD for viruses, quite a few files are coming up with the comment "did not have permission to open the file." Other than continuing to repair disk permissions, does anyone have suggestions about what might be causing this and/or on possible next steps?

A little further info - I checked permissions and I have permission to copy the files in question. Also, it seems that most of the errors that pop up when I verify permissions are of the type that can safely be ignored, according to Apple -- I'll go through the list later and cross-check them to make sure that they're all ignore-able, but thats what they appear to be.

  • Two computers and two users with the same name. Can't copy files anymore...

Hi all, after a user migration to my new iMac I had to make a change of the shortname. I knew it was not a good idea but had no choice otherwise I had to wait other 3 hours to migrate data again...
Anyway, I managed to change my shortname with success, but one strange thing happened afterwards... I have two macs networked, both have an admin user with the same shortname/real name, 'gillo' (I followed the procedure in one of these two, the Intel iMac. The other, a Powerbook, was not modified).
While previously I had no problems in copying files from the user 'gillo' on the Powerbook TO the user 'gillo' on the iMac, after the shortname change I'm not anymore able to do it. The error I get is:
"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items"
Doesn't matter where I put the files, Desktop, Documents, even the Drop Box, I always get the same error.
I went through some checks and this is the 'log':
    - The files/folders in the iMac 'gillo' directory are not locked.
    - The files can be copied without troubles to the dirs of another admin user
    - Permissions are the same as the other admin user and owner/group are the correct ones.
    - Both Macs have 10.4.6
    - The 'gillo' user on the iMac can copy files FROM the user 'gillo' on the Powerbook.
    - I repaired permissions and the hard disk booting from the install DVD.
    - I tried to change permissions of the directories (such as Desktop) on the iMac 'gillo' user allowing everybody to read/write. Also a no go.
Anybody went through this already? Or maybe something similar not directly related to the short name change?

Actually, everyone missed one point, when a device is priced, the cost of icloud storage space for that device is also included in it that is why they are able to give you 5gb each for each user ID, in nutshell there is nothing free coming with apple device purchase, it is paid for.  What they are trying by giving only 5gb per user ID irrespective of the number of devices used is pure broadlight looting, they take money from you when you buy each device and give you nothing, This is a case of goods and services bought but not fully deliverd ie apple can be suied for discreminatory treatment towards it's users. I wonder why no one tried this yet in America where everyone sue everyone for petty things..... there is no one to take up this issue? . if tim got any love for the guys who shell out money for the devices his company makes, he should be implimenting this as priority before someone wake up from sleep and sue him.
