Copying files to usb

When I try to copy certain music files to a usb stick, it says the file is invisible. Why and how do I change the file name?

A lot of USB sticks come pre-formatted for PC only and so the Mac can't write to them, run Disc Utility and see if that sees the USB drive and if so re-format it as Mac HFS then it should mount and be writeable. If you want to use it with both Mac and PC then choose FAT32 (MS-DOS).
Once it's mounted don't use copy/paste but drag and drop the files over.

  • Copied files to USB HDD - now can't find them!

I had to reinstall my wife's macbook so I backed up all her files to a USB HDD formatted as MS-DOS (FAT) [according to disk utility]
I then reinstalled and tried to find the files which do not show up on the USB HDD (shoulda checked!)
I've seen posts alluding to having the drive formatted Journalised but they all refer to having done that FIRST.
Are my files history? Is there any way to get them back? Help!

Thanks so much for helping me with this.
I must admit, I didn't pay too much attention when importing this "test"
group of photos to LR4, therein lies my problem.  Now that I look at the
    import settings that were used:
    1. Files were not added or copied, they were "moved" to a new location and
    also renamed.
    2. Files were renamed starting with "264" using my regular import template.
Listed below are the first 10 photos with their original LR3 and he
    changed LR4 names.
    1201_001 changed to 1201_264-2
    1201_002 changed to 1201_265-2

I have a back up of my images on an EHD from several days ago which has the

    Ok, lets be brief.
This problem is annoying me for years. It is totally reproducible although random. It happens when copying to external drives (mainly USB) when they are configured for "safe removal". I have had issues copying to NTFS and FAT32 partitions. I have
had issues using 4 different computers, from 7 years old to brand new ones, using AMD or intel chipsets and totally different USB controllers, and using many different USB sticks, hard disks, etc. The only common thing in those computers is Windows 7 x64 and
the external drives optimization for "safe removal". Installing Teracopy reduces the chances of data corrpution, but does not eliminate them completely. The only real workaround (tested for 2 years) is activating the write cache in the device manager
properties of the drive. In that way, windows uses the same transfer mechanisms as for the internal drives, and everything is OK.
MICROSOFT guys, there is a BIG BUG in windows 7 x64 external drives data transfer mechanism. There is a bug in the cache handling mechanism of the safe removal function. Nobody hears, I've been years talking about this in forums. It is a very dangerous bug
because it is silent, and many non professional people is experiencing random errors in their backup data. PLEASE, INVESTIGATE THIS. YOU NEED TO FIX SUCH IMPORTANT BUG. IT IS UNBELIEVABLE THAT IT IS STILL THERE SINCE 2009!!!
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I move my media files from USB-HD to NAS without having to copy the media files to iTunes Media folder?

I have iTunes on a Mac with the iTunes Media folder stored locally and the music on an external USB-HD. The music files are Not copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library.
Now I want to move my files from USB-HD to a NAS without losing any information or settings. I want to do the similar to my iPhoto library. I do not want to consolidate my files to iTunes Media folder. The articles I’ve read only discuss how to do if the files are copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library. Any tips or trix?

I have iTunes on a Mac with the iTunes Media folder stored locally and the music on an external USB-HD. The music files are Not copied to iTunes Media folder when added to the library.
How are you achieving the above? What are your copy setting in preferences? If you are manually overriding the copy-to by holding down the option key while adding media then that won't apply when you import a playlist (as in importing the .xml).  When you import a playlist like that you are essentially adding the files to the library again and it will obey the  preferences setting since you can't option add them that way.
Correct on the .itl.  Only iTunes itself can edit that file.
I think you need to review your basic wants/needs in doing all this.  If your reason for not wanting to use the Media Folder settiing is because you do not want it to go on the internal drive, but you don't actually mind if it organizes it as long as it is on the NAS, change the Media Folder preferences setting to the NAS and let it consolidate to there.  If you want to move the stuff but keep it organized in your own folder structure you may need to do it as I suggested initially.  Once it is on the NAS and iTunes recognize the file locations you can do what you can only do if you manually manage music which is move it around in Finder afterward once it is on the drive and recognized to tweak location to your final wishes.

  • Airport Network goes down when copying large files to USB network drive

My apologies if this has been covered before. This is my first post and I am new to the forums.
For several months my wife and I have been using the Airport Extreme 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet). I use Windows and she uses Leopard. We recently purchased a Western Digital MFL Pro (500GB). If the external drive is connected directly to my PC via USB I can copy to it without any problem. If the external drive is connected to the Airport via USB then if you copy files (generally) over 2GB it takes the whole network down. At that point we have to unplug the Airport wait a few seconds and then plug it back in. It's frustrating because the drive works when connected directly, but not when it's connected to the Airport.
Also, I am hardwired to the Airport (Ethernet) so it is not a wifi issue. Our firmware version is 7.2.1 which is the latest, plus I also updated the software that runs under Windows (5.3.1).
Does anyone know what is happening here? Is this a known issue? Is there a work around or fix available?

I've also experienced this problem with my AEBS and an Iomega 500GB MiniMax drive. My Iomega Drive was formatted for HFS+ from the beginning and I've had no problems accessing it from both my Mac and my Windows PC.
I've been monitoring these groups for signs of a solution, I've talked to the geniuses at one of the Apple Stores near me and so far there's no sign of a resolution. I've sent in feedback to Apple but had no response to it so far (don't know if that's usual).
The only suggestion that has been put forward so far is to take my AEBS, Iomega Hard drive and laptop to an Apple Store and demonstrate the problems there in the hope that a solution can be reached.
I've since purchased a 500GB Time Capsule but haven't had a chance to do the same test on that yet, but as far as Time Machine backups go its worked flawlessly so far (touch wood).

  • Safely copying files from Target Disk Mode to External USB. Advice?

Just got a new iMac and transferred my system and important files to it from my old iMac. However, a partition on my old iMac has files I want to move to my new iMac so they can be included in Time Machine backups while others I want to move to another external hard drive since I have physical copies of most of those files elsewhere.
I can connect my old iMac to the new via Target Disk mode and copy the critical files from Mac-to-Mac easily and quickly enough. What I want to know is if I’m safe to copy the other files from the TDM-connected iMac to a USB drive.
I’ve read that having other devices connected to your Mac while another Mac is connected via TDM can result in corrupted files. Is this true? Is it unsafe to copy files from a TDM Mac to an external USB drive?
If it is safe, is it best to connect the USB drive to the new Mac or to the old one while it’s in TDM? There’s a lot of data so I’m wondering about transfer times. One method would see files going over Firewire through the new iMac to a USB drive, while the other would go from TDM-connected Mac directly to a USB drive connected to its own USB port. That is:
TDM iMac > New iMac > USB Drive connected to New iMac
    or
TDM iMac > USB Drive connected to TDM iMac
I have limited space on my internal drive and I also don’t want to copy-hop from TDM iMac to New iMac then copy from New iMac to USB drive. I'd like to go directly from old drive to external USB drive if it's safe.
So I’m looking for advice on the best way to connect devices in order to cut down on copying time and number of copies, and to do it safely without corrupting data. Any advice is appreciated!

I've used Migration Assistant already to move all of my immediately necessary data and settings over. This other data was on a separate partition and I'm unable to copy all of the data over to my new drive due to lack of space.
Things are complicated by the fact that I need to change some of my externals over to Time Machine ready backups. Previously I was using 1 TB and a 2 TB drive for TM and another 2 TB drive for general backups/archiving. Now I need to juggle things around so that both 2 TB drives are for TM and the 1 TB is used for archiving.
An important point I should have mentioned is that I can't use my old iMac normally due to a GPU problem that seizes the system up. This is the reason I can't just copy stuff directly from old iMac to external USBs.
I'm interested to know if what I described above is safe and if there are any time savings or benefits for copying through my new iMac or connecting the externals directly to the old iMac in TDM.

  • Copy files between 2 USB hard drives.

I am trying to copy files between 2 USB hard drives.  I can copy to the clipboard but it won't let me paste in the other drive.  Any ideas?

Check if the destination drive is NTFS. If it is then you only have "Read Only Permission". You need to reformat the drive to "FAT" or Mac OS X Extendend (journaled)" using Disk Utility.
Select the Drive on the Desktop and Press "Command" - "i"

  • Copying files from iMac to USB flash drives

I am having problems copying files from my iMac computer to USB flash drives. Sometimes, I get the error message: "Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error Code -50)."
How can I solve this problem?
This error message does not happen everytime but rather occasionally. Most of the files I am trying to copy to my USB flash drives are MS Word documents. I have tried using various brands of flash drive, but I still get this error message.
I use my USB flash drives for both Mac and Windows OS computers. For my 2GB Kingston Data Traveller flash drive, I checked its product datasheet on the Kingston website, and it says that it is compatible with both Macintosh and Windows OS, and that I can use it for cross-platform PC/Mac file transfers.
I also checked the Properties tab for this flash drive, and the File System for the drive is listed as "FAT."

    Hello Stedman:
I am pretty sure that these files were not open in MS Word when I tried to copy them.
I only get this error message/code for a handful of MS Word documents; the rest of my MS Word documents were copied successfully to my USB flash drive.

  • Copying .mov files to usb

I have a macbook pro and want to copy a 6Gb and 11Gb .mov file to usb to transfer to a windows laptop.  Max I can copy on Fat 32 is 4 GB.
Can you help please.  I am using maverick OS.

Hi there, this is a common compatability issue with using both windows and mac but thankfully theres a way around it, you have to re format youre usb to a later format called ExFAT, this format will allow you to transfer files of all sizes. please follow these steps. if it becomes a bit confuesing, please let me know and i will provide some screen shots.
    1. connect youre usb to youre mac computer.
    2. back up anything thats on youre usb device.
    3. open up spotlight on the top right hand corner of youre screen and type in "disk utility"
    4. once opened you will see a pannel on youre right hand side with all of youre hardrives and usb flash drives, locate the one you want to use and left click on it.
    5. on the right hand side the will be  5 pannels " first aid. erase, partistion, raid, restore.   the one you want to click on is erase.
    6. you will now see and option for format, select ExFAT and then click on erase.
and thats it you can now transfer files of any size.

  • Is there any way to not create the hidden 'dot' files when copying to a USB

I am moving photos to a USB device for use in a digital picture frame. The problem arises that 'dot' files are also created on the USB device and the digital frame chokes on them. I actually have to take the device to a <egad> Windows system to delete all of the 'dot' files so that the photo frame works correctly. So.. in a word, I would like to perform a copy to the USB device and tell the OS to not generate the 'dot' files. Any ideas? Thanks

Try Folder Cleaner - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

Use an MDM to put the device in supervisory mode.  This mean you can only copy via USB to the device that put the device in supervisory mode.
