Copying friend's 'purchased' DVDs

I would like to copy a friend's DVD selection for personal use which he has purchased. Does the purchased DVD allow for legal copying, unlike the rental versions. Can this be done with my current software-iDVD 5(iLife 5) and 1.67 PowerBook G4 OS X 10.4.6, AND if so, what is the procedure to do so....

Hello Robert:
What Mr Shippey meant is that this forum is to be used to discuss questions aimed towards iDVD questions-not questions regarding copying protected DVDs.
That is illegal and there is no Apple Discussion Forum that deals with illegal requests.
Sorry about that-

  • I cant make a copy of a purchased dvd (for personal use)

    Ok, please help,
i made a copy, using disk utility, of a dvd (which i own). What has resulted is this: i have two files on my desktop 1. dracula.cdr and 2. disk2.dmg
these i know are video files, but they seem useless. when i dbl click them i end up with two seperate DVD_VIDEO icons on my desktop, i think these are called volumes. Anyway, they are both 7.21GB which is too large for my 4.7GB DVD-R (and at this stage i don't want to even think about trying to split over two disks!)
But what annoys me is that i can't even view the dvd content that is on my hard drive, let alone burn it to disk!!
What on earth am i missing?? Apart from necessary brain cells..
    Thanks,
    Anthony

More important, it is beyond the scope of this discussion group, which is intended to cover the use of the iDVD application. This isn't a discussion group about all Apple/DVD issues, it is a discussion group about iDVD-5.
That said, to the original poster, visit http://www.videohelp.com and you might have more luck finding the kind of details you need.
Oh, and is CSS really intended to be disc copy protection? Think about it: What good does it do to encrypt a file and then include the keys in the DVD player? If you copy the disc, leaving the CSS intact, the copy will still play in a DVD player. CSS doesn't prevent discs from being copied. I haven't tried, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if DVD Player.app can play the VIDEO_TS file ripped from a commercial DVD and NOT decrypted.
CSS is patent protection for DVD players. If you build a DVD player and you don't pay the license for the CSS keys, your knockoff DVD player won't play most content. The side effect is that it makes it more difficult for end users to excerpt scenes.

"Can you put purchased DVD movies that you have on your ipod? "
No.  breaking the encryption in order to copy them illegal.
" what about recorded DVD's that you have? "
    Add them to itunes.

  • IPod Classic 160GB film library sync problem -  trying to sync films that have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store - all other libraries sync perfect - why?

Hello Apple and the iTunes Windows PC users community.
I am trying to sync films that I have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store. The mp4s all appear and play successfully in my iTunes application but will not sync across to the iPod film library folder.
For your information: I am using iTunes 11.1.3.8 on a Windows 7 64bit machine with 500GB hard disk and 8GB of Ram in the UK.
I have restored the iPod classic 160GB three times now to see if it was a hardware problem with no joy. Each time all the music restores properly as do the podcasts and all the items in TV programmes all appear to sync and work fine.
I have also tried to copy films into the TV Programmes to get around it with no joy. They always go to the films section to start with. It is just the Films library that does not sync - all others work perfectly. As a last resort I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes with no joy either.
I am technically savvy and have gone through the itunes and ipod settings but nothing appears to make a difference - This is the first time I have had to post here as I can usually solve the majority of the ipod anomilies but this one has me flummoxed.
Has the film encoding type changed in the newest itunes update? - Has this happened to anybody else and is it a hardware, software, or operating system problem.

Having uninstalled the current version 11.1.3.8 and loaded and older version of iTunes 10.7.0.21 I can now categorically confirm that the newest update seems to be causing the problem as the films and TV Programmes are syncing perfectly on this older version.
If you are going to do this please dont forget to remove the  ' iTunes Library.itl' file as this stops the older versions from running as I've just found out

  • How to play purchased DVD on Apple TV?

I'm planning on purchasing an AppleTV2 by Christmas. However I'm not sure how to view a purchased DVD movie on my TV through ATV2.
Do I need to convert the movie to a specific format? - Is this legal?

as dave hutch mentioned the word "legal" is a subjective word. in order to play a dvd on your apple tv you need will need to do some things. you first need to get that movie into your itunes library. personally i have been buying the "new releases" on those blu ray combo packs that most often come with a "digital copy" of the movie that you can copy into your itunes library. this is perfectly legal and if you buy the combo pack the first week of its release you can in a lot of cases get 3 versions of that movie for the price of a regular dvd. then once you have it in your itunes library it's as simple as enabling home sharing and you can watch to your hearts content on your apple tv.
if you don't have a digital copy you are going to have to break the encryption on to copy it, and the specifics to do that are not allowed in this forum, but a quick google search will get you to many ideas and software to do that. i am like dave and think that for my own personal use this method is legal.
what ever you decide good luck

  • How do i watch my purchased dvds on apple tv if i usually use an apple dvd player for playback on my mac?

How do i watch my purchased dvds on apple tv if i usually use an apple dvd player for playback on my mac?

Nothing technical has been discussed. It is blocked because of licensing/copy protection.
I have to buy another DVD player?
The Apple TV is not a DVD player. So if you do not already own a player, then yes you will have to purchase one to view them on your TV.

  • Copying beta tapes to DVD

I have some old beta tapes that I want to copy to DVD. I've seen products such as myTV.pvr that allow connecting a VCR to iMac, then copy the file to DVD. A few questions:
    1. I understand that myTV.pvr creates files in MPEG-2 format. Does iDVD '08 support MPEG-2?
    2. If anyone else has experience with myTV.pvr or similar Mac-compatible products, I would be interested in any recommendations or experiences (good or bad).
    Thank you.

    G'day,
I've had a lot of success with mpeg streamclip (free software) which allows a multitude of format conversions, especially mpeg2 (DVD) to .dv which imovie 6 requires. You will also need to purchase the mpeg2 playback add-on from Apple (inexpensive). Using mpeg streamclip you can re-edit previously burnt DVDs by opening them in mpeg streamclip and then saving them as .dv files. You can then import the .dv files into imovie 6 and burn them from idvd. The added advantage of mpeg streamclip is that it allows you to capture video projects created on non-firewire devices (most current digital camcorder models). Hope this is of use.
    Cheers from Oz

I'm afraid this is by design.
You cannot Airplay Mirror a DVD using DVD Player - Apple block  screen mirroring of certain image data which might be protected.
I've a funny feeling Airplay mirroring can potentially be interecpted and decoded so someone could potentially copy the video stream (which would be poorer than DVD anyway).

  • Making copies of purchased DVDs

I am a totally new mac user, I've had a mac two days, and am wanting to make a copy of a DVD that I purchased for my own personal use. I have looked in the tutorial lessons and tried to copy the image like it says to through the disk utility, but it gets into it a little bit then an error message pops up that says "Unable to create 'Cassanova.cdr' - Input/output error. What am I doing wrong, or am I unable to make copies of purchased dvds on a mac?
Let me know if I need to tell you more information to fix this problem.
    I have iDVD 6.
    Thanks a lot!!!

    Hi larry,
    welcome to the  board
you stumble into a few problems:
    * commercial DVDs are often copy-protected - a mechanism, which does not allow to use the "usual" copy techniques, as Disk Utility... you need a tool to "rip" a DVD... which is in many countries illegal...-
    * step 2 is to make the copy of the DVD smaller - most commercial DVDs are double-layered= 7.7GB... tools as DVD2One or Popcorn (part of the Toast 7 suite) do this legal "crunching"..
    * the common behavior in this forum is NOT to link to any rippers..- in most areas of this planet, overriding copy protection is illegal... in my country the ownership, even the mentioning of any Ripper is illegal - but a socalled "personal copy" is allowed... laws...- ... you have to decide on your own, how to handle that...- googling will led you to some sources and tools....

  • HT2729 Can I rip purchased dvd's to iTunes?

I would like to know if I can rip or download dvd's that I have purchased to my iTunes video library?  I know you can with music

Some purchased DVDs include a code that lets you officially download a copy of the movie for playing on a computer or mobile device. Have a look at the back of your DVD cases to see if any offer this. There is also a new UltraViolet license scheme which some but not all movie studios have signed up to.
    See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UltraViolet_(system)
Technically it might be possible to convert DVDs to work in iTunes but in most countries this is still illegal due to various reasons, for example while in the US the fair-use doctrine might allow this, the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) forbids the breaking of encryption schemes such like those on commercial DVDs.
It should be noted that the UK plans to make format shifting i.e. copying DVDs to another format legal. Obviously you should have the orginal legal DVD even then. Renting a DVD would not count, you need to own it.

  • I-toons and purchased DVD's

Is there a way to copy the movies have purchased onto my Ipod? I see that there is a movie library in the i-tunes software but I am unsure of how to get the files loaded. Is there a copy right protection that will stop this from happening?

Yes, there is generally copy protection. Commercial DVDs are encrypted. Breaking that encryption, a necessary first step in copying DVDs, is illegal in in the U.S.. Therefore, the terms of use of these forums prohibits us from discussing software or methods. Sorry.

  • Downloading commercially purchased DVD's to iTunes

I have some commercially purchased DVD's that I want to download in either iTunes or onto my iMac intel mid 2010. I would like to be able to download them and sync them to my Verizon iPhone 4. Any suggestions on how to do this?

I am going to assume that you mean DVD movies you bought at a store? If that is the case, I want to say that legally you can not copy them. They have Copy Protections built into the disc that prevents you from making backups or copying them to another device. They do sell movies that have 'digital copies' available that you can use on your iPhone etc, but that is dependent on the movie. Now there are ways around it which I wont say as I do not want to violate apple's TOS, however I would google it and look for programs that can copy dvd's to iphones and itunes, etc. Be aware that you are looking at several gigabytes of information per movie.

  • Downloading legally purchased DVDs to I-Tunes so I can watch on my iPod

I want to download my LEGALLY PURCHASED DVDs to iTunes to watch on my iPod. How do I do this? If I can't do it, then why is it illegal since I purchased the DVD at a store? Thanks!

    This is illegal.
It is illegal because our legal system and many around the world have ruled it illegal.

  • Purchased DVD "NOT PERMITTED"?

DVD player works with other discs.  Tried to play new purchased dvd FROZEN. Player recognizes it as FROZEN but says NOT PERMITTED in all functions.  It works on my friends PC. Removed and reinstalled several times.  Played other purchased DVDs OK but not this one.

This is the same person asking the question.  I have figured out that the DVD works fine on my computer, it is only when I connect it via Airplay to my TV with my Apple TV that i get the message it can't move the video to the screen.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • How do I copy music (personal & purchased) from iPod Touch to iPhone 5c?

I have 464  songs on my iPod Touch 4th gen; however, only the 194 songs I purchased from the iTunes store show up in the iTunes Library on my Mac.  Accordingly only the purchased (194) songs are being backed up to the Cloud.  I recently purchased an iPhone 5c and was able to load what was in the Cloud.  I would, however, like to be able to access ALL of my music (i.e., all 464 songs on my iPod Touch) on my iPhone.  How do I get the 270 songs (not in the Cloud) onto my iPhone 5c?
If this can't be done within iTunes, is there freeware available for this purpose?  I downloaded an application called "iExplorer" (from Macroplant) only to discover that this "free download" is not, in fact, free to use, but costs $34.95.  I only want to transfer files from my iPod Touch one time; hence, $34.95 is a costly one-time fix, especially if free/less expensive options are available.  Thanks, in advance, for any help others may be able to provide.

To copy non-iTunes purchases you need a third-party program. Try the free iFunBox
    For iTunes purchases:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
Then sync to the other device
