Copying Hyperlinked Text from PDF to Word (or elsewhere)

Hello-
I am at my wit's end, so I hope someone can help... I have a PDF with text that hyperlinks to a web page. It works great within Acrobat Pro, but if I try to copy and paste that text/hyperlink into an email, or word file, it loses the underlying hyperlink and only retains the text.
Example: The text would say "Click here to hear about Company X and Solution Y" and all of this text is hyperlinked to "www.google.com/companyx" or whatever. When I copy and paste that from the PDF into another application, I am left with the "click here" text, but not the underlying web page.
Here is the tricky part. I have found that if I select additional text that is not hyperlinked in addition to the hyperlinked text, and then right-click over the non-linked text, I get an option to "copy with formatting". Now I am able to copy/paste as one would expect. The problem is that this is not intuitive at all.
Can someone please let me know if this is a problem with PDF's, or if I can change settings when I Export out of InDesign? Or is there some other workaround?
Thank you SO much in advance!
Dash

Here is a visual example of what I am referring to, showing the right-click location and the different options that appear. (The blue selection box is from me selecting and dragging around the question from a non-text area)

  • Copy and pasting from PDF to Word for Mac

I have a Mac Book Pro and I am having difficulty in copying from PDF to Word documents. Specifically, I cannot highlight the text that I want to move to the Word document. I have followed the help suggestions, and found that the PDF has not encription barriers. The cursor does not go from the arrow head to the other symbol that would allow me to highlight that which I want to copy. I have the text tool, and under edit, the copy word is ready. I am at a loss, as I can copy from e-mail and other things. Thanks.

I'm glad you've got the problem licked now, or at least understand the limitations on some of your downloaded PDF documents. I suspect those limitations will apply to all documents that are downloaded from the same database or source, and will consistently not apply to documents downloaded from specific other databases, because of differences in the way documents are scanned by different database services.
By way of clarification, let me just point out that what you are calling Acrobat, which used to be called *Acrobat Reader,* is now officially called *Adobe Reader.* Adobe changed the name to distinguish more clearly between Acrobat — an expensive commercial application for +creating, modifying and manipulating+ PDF files — and the freeware Adobe Reader, which only enables you to view them. You'll avoid needless confusion by calling the Reader by its proper name in the future. No big deal, though: lots of people make the same mistake here. (I've explained this distinction to my wife any number of times, and have finally learned not to bother doing it again: she simply doesn't care.)

  • Problems copy & paste text from PDF to InDesign CS5

    Hey guys
Today, I tried copying and pasting text from a PDF I received from my client, into a InDesign CS5 doc, and the text came out was just random numbers and punctuations.
I've tried exporting Word / RTF & TXT file from the PDF and yet they still come out random. I'm not sure if it's just how the PDF was made, or there is something wrong with my CS5.
I'm on Snow Leopard, CS5 Premium, Acrobat Pro 9 & also Acrobat Reader X.
    Any ideas why?

    It's the PDF.
Usually, you can copy text out of a PDF, but there is no guarantee *at all*. Older software used to take shortcuts to subset fonts: first character it encountered got coded as #1, the next as #2, etc. etc. If you do a search & replace of each of the nonsense characters, you'll slowly see the original text appearing (thst's not as simple as it sounds, though).
A similar "problem" is that sometimes spaces don't get copied (there is no need for a "Space Character" in a PDF), and that you cannot copy contiguous lines of text as a single paragraph. All of it is because a PDF is not intended nor designed to be re-used after creation.
If you really need this text and don't want to type it in, try to get hold of the original file.

  • Losing text from PDF to word

    Hi,
sorry if it's been asked before but I converted an Acrobat PDF to word doc on my Mac book and it converted the doc sent to me in its blank form and none of the 127 pages of text I filled in!
    Help!!

Very likely the problem is the use by WORD of printer metrics. That is typical of most word processors (why they are not called layout programs like some of the other alternatives). You either need to select the Adobe PDF printer while you edit. Then using the PDF Maker should give you a consistent result. On my notebooks, the Adobe PDF printer is my default printer.
In WORD, you can also go to the options and go way down in the list of compatibility settings and select to not use printer metrics. The result may not always look as good as if you use printer metrics, but it should translate almost exactly to any printer in terms of what you see. With WORD 2007, MS turned off the use of printer metrics as the default. In prior versions of OFFICE, printer metrics was turned on.
Many times you will see no difference, but if you start playing with using paragraph returns to go to the next page and such, then strange things happen with the printer metrics selected. That is when you need to select the printer in the print menu and then go back over your document to check for consistency.

  • Copy & Pasted text from PDF messes up upper-case words..

    Hey there,
Have this problem on many PC's in my work, on Windows Vista and Windows 7, using Adobe Reader v9.1.0.
When highlighting text and copying, then going elsewhere and pasting, the 'case' of the text messes up.
    For example, if I copied:
"The QUICK brown FOX jumps over the Lazy DOG"
    The pasted text would appear:
"The QUicK brown FoX jumps over the lazy DoG"
Is this a known issue? It's doing it on different PC's with different OS's but the version of Adobe Reader is still the same, so it's either an issue with that, or with the PDF's we're reading. They are PDF's of newspapers, but still... text is text, so it shouldn't be an issue!
It's taking quite a lot of time having to scroll through all this text to make sure all the capitalization is correct (especially when it comes to grammar).
Just wondering if anyone else has come across this problem, or if there's any known solution!
    Thanks in advance
    -Rhydz

  • Copy paste text from pdf exported from Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportViewer control with Czech specific characters produced box charactex or ?.

Used Visual studio 2012. In our project there is used the Microsoft.Reporting.WinForms.ReportViewer control. In the report handled by the control are TextBoxs with a text with Czech specific characters e.g. (ř, ě, ...) . When exporting the report to pdf,
characters are displayed correctly. However when the text with czech characters in the pdf if copied and  placed into the seach box in the pdf document only box characters are displayed. The TextBox in the report use the default font Arial. When the report
is exported to Word, and then the Word document is saved as a pdf document, its ok. Coping a text with Czech charactes in the result pdf document and pasting into the search box displays again Czech characters not box characters.
Also when in the report handled by the ReportViewer control are several Tex Boxes and some of the boxes contains Czech characters and some not, after exporting to a pdf document there is problem with text selection. When in the pdf document I'm trying to
select several paragraphs, some with Czech characters and some without them, selection behaves strangely and jumps from one paragraph to another unexpectedly.

    Hi,
did you managed to avoid those squares?
BTW: if any such char. is encountered in a line, the entire line of text is grabbled.
I've tried even the ReportViewer from MSSQL 2014, but got the same problem. When I've tried IL Spy, I found a code, where it is checked if the PDFFont is composite - depending on that a glyph is created. But that still only a guess.
I've tried Telerik's reporting, they have similar problem (beside other), but not with the special characters. They produced scuares for some sequences like: ft, fi, tí.
Please give any info you got.
Until then my advices for you:
    a) try JasperReports (seems theyre most advanced, although it is java)
    b) Developer express has quiet quality reports - and it seems they got those special chars. right :D
    c) I created a ticket and waiting for Telerik's response (but if I had to choose reporting, I vould stick with a) or b)

  • Font changes when copied from PDF to Word Docuemt

    Hi ,
I have created a form which has text fields and static text and font style is Arial "10".In the preview i could see Someother fonts instead of Arial "10".
When i copied the text from PDF to Word document it is showing "Calibri (Body)" or "Myriad Pro". I need same font when i preview the form as well as when i copied from PDF to word.
I have created Custom component with Arial "10" even though in the preview i could see someother font.
What could be the reason ..
    Thanks In advance.
    Vjay

I can't think of why Acrobat/Reader wouldn't be displaying Arial. Try saving the form as pdf with Fonts Embedded in your Designer preferences.

  • Help: Copy text from PDF to AI or MS Word

    Hello,
I'm new to this boards so, if topics like this were brought up I'm sorry and be glad, if someone can redirect me to it.
I've also searched for solution throu google and did not find anything that would fix this so I came here as my last option
I have recived a PDF document from a company about pad printing. I'd like to copy some text from this PDF to Illustrator/Word so I could edit some things. I could retype all but document has over 55 pages and I'm leaning thowards easyer solutions than retyping everything.
The issue I have is when I try to copy text from this document: http://rapidshare.com/files/384536794/one_page.pdf.html
all I get is some encrypted symbols...
If any1 could direct me to some guide or post solution how I could get text from this document to AI/MS Word I'd appreachiate it.
    TY in Advance.
    Stefan
    Sorry for my bad english.

I don't know why you wanna use rapidshare for reference, would you know there were many problem about them? Actually I hate rapidshare.
You can use Acobat to your work easily, as this way has been suggested, I would introduce you another free approach.
    1. Download AnyBizSoft PDF to Word Converter, which is a totally free desktop applicaiton.
    2. Install and launch the app.
    3. Import PDF files. You can add many files at a time as well as choose the certain page of a file.
4.Set output folder and click Convert
Word done and hope that I provide some assistance.

  • Problems when i copy text from Pdf and paste on Word

In Pdf documente the text is in perfect conditions, but, when i copy the text and paste in WORD document the character change into random crazy character like: "()*"*&!(!*"(!"(!)"( )*"()!*("!&("@*")(!*@"!*@(
    how i fix this??

I have the same problem when copying the PDF into a Word file. I tried Save as RTF doc. and it is still just symbols.
It could be a font problem, because it has some weird Gill Sans and Futura fonts. I am sending a picture as an example.
The option of exporting as Tiff and then applying OCR is interesting but still is kind of slow when i have a 100 pages document. If the fonts is the problem is there any way i could select the whole text and apply it a known font like Arial?
    Thanks for any info!
    Cheers,
    Sebastian

  • When I converted a file from PDF to WORD.DOC it opened as Read Only and I'm unable to alter any of the text.  How can I solve this problem?

When I tried to convert a file from PDF to WORD.DOC it opened as Read Only and I'm unable to alter any of the text.  How do I solve this problem?  I don't know how to change it from Read Only.

    Dear Sara
Thank you very much for sending the converted file.  Yes, I am able to edit it - that will be very useful to me and I appreciate your help.
Referring to your previous message when you said you'd converted via Acrobat and not Acrobat.com, I'm converting via Acrobat.com because that's the only option that is shown (how do I convert via Acrobat? - perhaps that would be more successful).  I'm using the Export PDF website, and the OCR is enabled to "Recognize text in English UK".  However, I've just tried converting a different LPA pdf form, this time for Health & Welfare https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/245571/LPA114_He alth_welfare_LPA.pdf and again I have the same problem as before.  I've altered it from "Read only" and thought I'd then be able to enter text, but "Drawing Tools" is shown in the pane and I'm unable to enter anything onto the form - everything appears to be in images.  Also, the lettering on the heading of' page 1 has become jumbled, with the word "Public" overlaying the word "Guardian."  Any suggestions as to what it is I'm doing wrong would be welcome - I don't like to be beaten!
    Regards,
    Judith.

  • Using browser javascript to copy selected text from a pdf file opened in Air app.

I have posted this question on reader forum as well, but I think it is more suited here...
I am trying to create a note-taking application in air. I want to extract selected text from pdf file as a string object or to the clipboard.
Obviously, all pdfs in my local storage will not be scripted to recieve postMessages and act accordingly, and that is not practical either. So, my problem is, how can I copy the selected text in the pdf file (opened as an object in htmlloader within my Air app) to clipboard or directly in another control by say clicking a button in air application? I suppose, this is possible using javascript, however, I don't know which reader methods are exposed to the wrapper htmlloader control. In short, I want to execute app.execMenuItem("Copy") command through htmlloader javascript. Any alternate solutions are also welcome.
This is similar to passing inbuilt commands/methods/functions (of adobe reader) to pdf-reader plugin embedded in a webpage via javascript. This is possible in IE where the pdf is rendered as activex object, and hence JSObject interface of pdf document/reader is accessible to the browser javascript. I have also read that this same JSObject is accessible to VB as interface for IAC, so as the Air is Adobe's own product, I was wondering if equivalent of JSObject is accessible to htmlloader control as well.
    Thanks in advance...
    Mits

Thank you Thom for your reply...
    from
    http://www.adobe.com/devnet/acrobat/javascript.html
...Through JavaScript extensions, the viewer application and its plug-ins expose much of their functionality to document authors, form designers, and plug-in developers...
As it is explicitly mentioned, that the functionality of adobe reader are exposed for plugin development, I thought someone here might have used external javascript to execute some safe methods in adobe reader. The functionality (i.e. external javascript interface-JSObject) is already available for VB programmers to develop IAC. Further, the Acrobat SDK example called "AcroPDFinHML" shows how one can embed a pdf-reader in a html page and execute some safe methods (like gotonextpage(), zooming etc.) in IE as ActiveX plugin. I have checked it myself for adobe reader 9, and it works perfectly, so there is no security issue as such to implement the same for another browser (like in my case, the htmlloader control in flex/air app).
I intend to create a note taking application in air, where it is very much required that I should be able to copy selected text from various pdf documents, that are open in my app, and subsequently paste/collect/save the collected notes and process them afterwords (offcourse, from the pdfs that allow me copying text). However, it is not happening for me here. As the pdfs are opened through adobe reader plugin, it does not register the copy command executed by my air app. It registers the system level copy command (by keyboard shortcut Ctrl+C), but my air app has no way to execute the system level copy command programmatically. So I am kind of stuck here...
Thanks again for your reply. Having known what am I intend to accomplish, any other (may be alternative) solutions will be appreciated nonetheless...
    Mits
