Copying iphoto titles to backup drive

i've used the batch change function in iphoto to name and number a series of photos, but when i copy them to my external hard drive for a backup, the titles don't copy; i just have a string of IMG titles and no way of telling which photo is which. how do i get those titles to copy? i don't want to have to rename each one on my external drive.
thanks,
hb

Titles are not Filenames. Titles are in the Exif metadata of the shots nd available in apps that understand this material.
If you want to use the titles as Filenames you can export from iPhoto using the Export command (File -> Export), it's an option in the resulting dialogue.

  • Can't copy iPhoto from my backup disk

I had to restore a lot of apps from my external backup drive yesterday. Most of them went OK, but, among others, iPhoto and iWeb wouldn't copy over to my iMac from the external drive. And, as luck would have it, I can't find my original iLife disks
Is there no way to copy these from my backup?
    Any help appreciated!

Terrence, thanks for the response. I used SuperDuper for the backup. I didn't try to restore from SD after erasing my hard drive because I'd have brought the problems over from the backup that caused me to reinstall the OS in the first place. So I dragged what I wanted from the backup over to the newly initialized and "systemized" internal hard drive.
But what I decided to do was to get iLife 09. I've been wanting to do it for a time now and this seemed like the ideal time to do it, given the problems.
Again, thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.

  • Cannot copy iphotos from one hard drive to another

    hello,
to free some space i had put my iphoto library to an external drive 1.5TB.
But now i have to transfer that iphoto library to 4tb WD hard drive which i bought but its giving me error everytime i copy that folder
this is the error it is giving it to me now.
" The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “iPhoto Library” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)"
what should i do i dont want to lose my 7 years sweat.pls advice

What format is the 1.5 T external hard drive?  If should be OS X Extended (journaled) with ownershiop set to be ignored:
If it's formatted to some version of FAT that could be the problem.
You could try using  iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library on the 1.5 EHD and save the rebuilt copy on the 4 T drive which also should be formatted as described above.

  • Can't copy Iphoto library from external drive to hard drive

I have a 210 gig iphoto library that I am trying to copy from an external hard drive with 440 gig of avaliable space. I am getting a message say it can't copy because there is not enough space. The math doesn't add up

    Try the following:
1 - run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
3 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1.
4 - try dragging the library to your internal drive again.

  • After changing permissions, and copying iphoto lib to external drive, what do I need to do to reconnect with iPhoto?

sharing Libraries among users instructions seem incomplete.  I'm also not proficient at setting up a new volume on my backup drive used for Time Machine.

instructions for sharing a library are here - iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users
And it can not be on the same drive as the TimeMachine backup - it will not work long term as TM fills the drive and would crow iPhoto out and even if you could you would not want to since you would have no backup of your photos - you need an additional drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
An to switch the library that iPhoto opens depress the option key ad keep it down while you launch iPhoto until the switch library window appears - then switch to the desired library - this will remain the default library for that computer until you option launch again

  • Unable to copy iphoto library from external drive to internal drive

    iPhoto '09 8.1.2 (424)
I have a very large iPhoto library (282GB, 34k photos) spread between multiple computers, which as been consolidated on a single external drive now (1 TB Western Digital Mac OS Extended (Case-senstive, Journaled). I'm trying to get the big library on the external drive back on my Mac Pro so I can break the merged libraries into smaller libraries in a safe fashion.
There is nothing on the internal drive, but I keep getting an error about 62GB into the copying that reads: "You cannot copy "[Library Name]" to the destination because its name is the same as the name of an item on the destination, except for the case of some characters." ... But there's nothing on the internal drive!!!
I've renamed the library on the external drive, then tried copying it -- no dice. I've created a new folder on the internal drive and tried copying it to the new folder -- same error at exactly the same spot in the transfer. I've even reformatted then zeroed out the internal drive -- same error, same spot. Anyone know a solution or have ideas about what I'm doing wrong?
    Many thanks!

I think the error report is bogus and the issue is not on the receiving volume but a locked or damaged file within the library.
Try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair Library permissions.
FWIW, I don't see what you gain by a: splitting the library at all and b: copying it back to the MacPro to do it.

  • Copy iphoto images to flash drive to pc

I scuba dive and download my pictures to my iBook. I like to edit them on my PC. How do I copy the jpegs to my flash drive to import to pc? I notice there are data folders and thumb folders. Can someone help?
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
The easiest and safest way is to open iPhoto select image > Share > Export Option... make a folder on your desktop and export to here, afterwards simply copy to flash drive. I do this everytime I need to go between PC and Mac...
I suggest you use the Flash Drive FIRST on the PC, it will automatically be formatted so you can use on both machines.

  • Copied Iphoto library however backup

Backup library doesnt seem to contain any of the *.mov files that were imported to iphoto. I used a simple copy from finder to drop box and then went to win7 computer to copy to folder to win 7 pictures folder. When I browsed it there were no mov files there.
    Kevin

I just recopied it to my public\dropbox folder I realize now that I did not finish copy to that folder on the mac before I copied and pasted it on my win machine which is my backup target...it has a terabyte of storage. My real problem is that the mac is not allowing me to copy folders directly to shared folders on the target I have to go to the win machine and navigate to the dropbox in order to copy files. Finder gives the error that some of the items I want to copy I do not have permission to read from even though I reset permissions and checked the files info. I did read in some of the posts here that exporting creates hassles when backing up the library so I stuck with simple copying from the finder.

  • Does anyone know how to convert iTunes TV subscription downloads to files that I can put on a backup drive and watch on my TV vs. MacBook?

I purchased a TV series from iTunes and downloaded the HD version. I then copied it to a backup drive so I could plug it in to my DVD player to watch. This would not work. Does anyone know how to convert the files so they are watchable on TV rather than on my MacBook?

Video in the new iOS is under the application Videos. You should be able to find things there.

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk.  If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • When I try to drag and drop my photos in iPhoto to an external drive (for backup or to transfer them to my other Mac) only some will transfer.  If I copy

When I try to drag and drop my photos in iPhoto to an external drive (for backup or to transfer them to my other Mac) only some will transfer.  If I copy and paste, the same thing happens.  The photos are all taken with the same camera, but some will not transfer.  It tells me right away - for example, I'll "grab" 3500 photos to drag and move, and the red ball will tell me it's moving 3256 or something.  If I use the copy function instead - copy 3500 photos, it will show in Finder that I can paste 3256 or whatever. This happens on my iMac as well as my MacBook Pro.  It started recently and I've never had this before.  Any thoughts?  Thank you!

Are you able to use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu to export  the photos into a folder on the EHD?

I want to move pic's in a folder from iPhoto to a flash drive. Everything I've tried allows me to "copy" the folder but no "paste" to the flash drive.  What do I do?  What am I doing wrong??

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your USB drive is formatted in NTFS, and OS X can't write on disks with NTFS. To fix this:
    1. Use an app like Paragon NTFS.
    2. Format the USB drive in another filesystem like "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", "MS-DOS (FAT)" or "exFAT" > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Make a backup of your files on the external disk.
After doing that, you will be able to copy your photos to the external disk. Note that you can also use the Export feature in iPhoto to get more export options

  • How to import photos into iphoto from backup drive to new computer

2008 "Vintage"  iMac recently died. Data was saved on external hard drive. Purchased new iMac, OS 10.9.4, how to get old iphoto library from hard drive to new computer. Iphoto 9.5.1. Thanks

Data was saved on external hard drive. Purchased new iMac, OS 10.9.4, how to get old iphoto library from hard drive to new computer.
Teresa, in what way way the data saved to an external hard drive?  Do you have a copy of your iPhoto library on that drive? Or is it a clone of your old system drive ? A Time Machine backup?
And which iPhoto version did you have on your old Mac?
If your external drive holds a copy of your iPhoto library, you can simply connect this drive your new mac and drag the library over.  It will depend in the version of your old iPhoto, how you can open the the old library. If it is an iPhoto '09 or '11 library, you can aunch iPhoto with the options key held down and select the library as your new iPhoto library.  If the iPhoto version is older, you will have to ru the iPhoto Library Upgrader first.

  • Do I really need to Shadow Copy Backup Drive?

I am running SBS 2011 Standard. Every once in a while I get "volsnap event id 25 (The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377} were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow
in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.)".
The referenced volume is actually my backup drive which is a "simple, basic, NTFS primary partition" without an assigned drive letter which is entirely devoted to Windows backup destination drive.
    VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWSTORAGE shows:
    Shadow Copy Storage association
       For volume: (\\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}\)\\?\Volume{4ba
    c8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}\
       Shadow Copy Storage volume: (\\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}
    \)\\?\Volume{4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 2.094 MB (0%)
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 2.93 GB (1%)
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED (100%)
which I assume means VSS is actually keeping a shadow copy of the backup drive (or trying to).
My question is - do I really need to shadow copy this volume? If not would I stop this by the following command?
    VSSADMIN DELETE SHADOWSTORAGE /FOR={4bac8e93-04ed-11e2-814f-90b11c020377}

Just did a quick bit of research on this and I think the error may be misleading.
If you go into Disk Management, right click Disk Management, All Tasks - Configure Shadow Copies
Do they show as Disabled on that volumeID?
If I go into Windows Server Backup and check out the Details, I see (on this system) 70.63gb of Backup Items, and 186gb of Copies. Which tallies up with what I see under List ShadowStorage.
So, what I suspect is happening (although happy to be proved wrong) is that the error above is VSC making space on your backup disk, or some other management process of the backups themselves.
I expect if you delete that Shadow Storage you will in fact, be deleting the backups.

iPhoto opens but then the spinning rainbow wheel appears and I can't do anything. I have opend iPhoto with the Option key pressed and rebuilt the library and it still happens.  I want to at least access my photos and copy them to an external drive. Anyone have ideas on how to get to them?

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
