Copying Itunes library from my imac to my Powerbook

Can someone give me step-by-step instructions for copying and moving my itunes library on my imac to my powerbook? I have the necessary firewire cable, but I am unsure of exactly how to proceed using migration assistant or some other method. Thanks! -David

David,
I think that you can simply connect the two computers and then make the PowerBook appear like an external HDD and then it is a simple drag and drop. My freind did this and I am pretty sure that there is to it.
Of course there are other means to transfer the music; iPod, Network....

My vista laptop daughter wants my classical collection from my tiger imac before she heads off to college. I know how to transfer one to one on the same platform. How to from tiger to vista. Thanks!

Connect them together with a Firewire cable. Boot the iMac into Target mode by holding down the "T" button when you boot. It should now show up on the MacBook desktop as a Firewire disk drive. Copy the iTunes folder (not just the iTunes Music folder inside there) to the MacBook.
You can probably copy it over the folder already there and when you open iTunes everything should be there. If you rather play it safer, rename the original MacBook iTunes folder to something different like iTunes2 then copy from the iMac into the Music folder.

assuming all your media files are in the default location, copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music or media folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music to the USB stick.

    - Try contacting iTunes for the password problem:
Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us
    - For the other problem you can try a reset. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - The next standard thing to do is to download/install a new app but you cant 'do that.
    - Instead, try restoring from backup.

  • Moving iTunes library from old imac to new iMac

    Hi all
don't know if this the right forum - looked the iTunes forum and there was a similar question unanswered. It's a weird one and I can't work out what's going on.
My wife has just bought a G5 iMac (intel) and I'm helping her move her iTunes music over from her old G4. I've backed up her Music folder on to a portable hard drive using Personal Backup. The full Music folder is on the drive (checked before ejecting).
When I connect the hard drive to the new iMac and open the iTunes library half her songs are missing. I eject the the hard drive and she transfers a few more songs on to her new computer from her iPod. When I reconnect the hard drive and run iTunes - the additional songs are there. We try a few more using the iPod and - hey presto - her library is growing. It's still not complete though.
Each time we connect the hard drive and run iTunes we see the additional songs. But not her full library - even though I know it's on the hard drive. (went back and plugged into the old iMac to make sure. Hope all this making sense).
What seems to be happening is that opening the iTunes library from the portable hard drive only ever shows what's on the computer hard drive. (The new computer is authorised).
There must be something simple that I'm missing. Any help would be really appreciated.

    Hi Ian,
If you wanted the library on the external HD I would have directly copied the iTunes folder from the old computer to the HD, then replaced the iTunes folder in the Music folder of the new machine with a shortcut to the folder on the HD. Should have worked fine. The other option would have been to simply copy from the external HD to the Music folder on the new machine.
Backup software isn't always all that helpful in some of these situations.
    Karn.

  • How do I back up my itunes library from my iMac to iCloud?

I want to be able to access my iTunes library on my iMac from my iPhone while away from my home network. I don't want to fill my iPhone with the file as it is so big. Can I move my whole iTunes library to iCloud and then access it from both my iMac and my iPhone through the internet? If I do this, can I delete the library from my iMac as it is slowing it down because of its size?

I use the iTunes Match feature which you subscribe $24.99 / year. Works flawlessly! I can upload up to 25.000 songs there to be streamed or downloaded to all of your devices. Mac/iPhone/iPod or iPad. This way you can free storage on the devices. Great quality on the matched songs too. If you sometime in the future should buy a new Apple device, just log in with your account and your music collection is there for you to enjoy! Home or away, the only thing needed is an decent WiFi connection to use all the above.

  • Copied itunes library from one ext HD to another - some music not playing

    Hello,
I copied all my itunes library from one external hard drive to another. I backed everything up first then reimported into itunes. About 100 of my MP3 files are in Windows Explorer and the files appear Ok but they are not adding to itunes. The songs is listed in my library as if its there in my playlists but I click on it and nothing happens in tunes. The song won't play if any format from what I've tried. I have researched on itunes and looked on the boards here and I think it is something to do with the encoding of the files, as when I click on 'get info' for the song everything comes up the same as the songs that are working only there is no profile/channel/encoding on the first summary screen. I have tried to import again from my windows folder after changing the encoding 'Import Settings' but it does not work. I also get that (-50)Error when I try and change the settings on the file. Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    GH

    It's probably corrupted mp3 headers.

  • Best way to move/copy iTunes library from PC to Mac

    Hi,
What's the best way to get my iTunes library from my PC to my new Mac?
The two computers are both networked.
    Thanks.

    Greetings David:
I have just completed this task... It took many attempts to get the two computers talking (windows xp pro, and new Imac g5). When I finally got them to talk to each other, the file transfer was brutallly slow. I used the ether-net cable to connect the two machines directly. The system was not very stable and crashed continuously. I would get one or two songs transferred and then the mac would lock up and require a restart (command option esc), via force quit of finder. Relaunch would not work, and I had to shut the machine off with the on off switch each time.
Today I finally burned the tunes on 2 CDs and simply dumped them into the music file. The PC burns a full ( ~ 800 megs) in about 10 minutes. Mac can down load the CD in ~ 6 minutes. This adds up to less than 20 minutes. Using the direct connection (indicated 100 Mbts/sec on the PC) the process was pathetically slow (hours restarting and horsing around).
One of my goals was to get the machines talking to each other, having accomplished this, it think it is not a worthwhile effort.
    Best of luck to you,
    Mike

  • Copying iTunes Library from one user account to another on the same MacBook

I recently purchased a new Macbook running 10.4.8 and transferred my iTunes library from my G5 via firewire.
The problem is that I started using one user account and
when the library transferred over it went into another
user account. Is there a way that i can take the library
and put it under the user account that i had established
prior to the transfer or do i have to import each MP3
    (via the HD) separately?

  • Trying to get my iTunes content from new iMac to my Powerbook, best method?

Want to have all my content on the go, how can I get my desktop content into my Powerbook, firewire through migration? Use iPod? Network them with ethernet? PLlease help!

Connect both computers with a FireWire cable, start up the iMac with the T key held down, and move the iTunes Music folder from the iMac to the PowerBook; by default, this folder is Music/iTunes/ in your account's home folder, which is in /Users/ unless you've manually changed it. Quit iTunes before beginning the process.
The Migration Assistant should not be used in this situation; it cannot migrate data to an existing Mac OS X user account.

  • Moving iTunes library from an iMac to a Windows Laptop running Windows 7

    Hi All
My daughter has a problem. She is selling her iMac and has to move her music library of 3,000 tunes from her iMac to her Windows 7 laptop. She does not have either her iPhone or iPod any more. How does she do this.
    Please help.
    Regards
    Lee

+When I moved my iTune files to my Windows 7 laptop, it worked first time.+
Well, if it worked the first time, your library must have been nicely consolidated into the itunes media folder.
The file structure between Mac and WIndows is completely different. iTunes can't make sense of the Mac file paths in the itl database. However, it should revert to looking for everything in the itunes media folder location, if your daughter's PC has that itunes preference turned on.
If it's already enabled, turn it off, save the changes, and then turn it back on.
If all the items are in that itunes media folder, there shoudl be an "Organizing files" message while it looks for them again. If they are not in the media folder, it won't find them.

  • Transferring/Copying iTunes library from desktop computer to laptop

What is the best way to move my current desktop iTunes library to my laptop?
I have the latest version of iTunes on the laptop, which has moved music from it to iTunes. There are about 50 songs on this laptop library, but on my desktop computer there is much more.
I want to make sure that I add the current iTunes library contents to the laptop library. Is there a simple solution to this question?
    Thanks for any assistance.

  • Copying itunes library from Mac to Windows over Local Network

I am a recent switcher. When I first got my MacBook I connected my Windows formatted iPod to the MacBook to transfer my purchased iTunes music, and everything worked fine.
Now I want to transfer the iTunes music folder from my Mac to a PC (both Vista and XP) over my local network. However, when I try to do this I get the following error message:
Error 0x800700FE: The specified extended attribute name was invalid.
I get the same error message if I try to transfer the individual music folders (eg Oasis).
I have no trouble transferring the folders for song/albums that I have subsequently downloaded to the Mac from iTunes. I only have the problem with the music I originally transferred from the iPod.
I have been trying to research extended attributes to see if I can edit this, but it all goes over my head. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
i'm also a new Mac user (Vista did the trick , and i found this article on the Apple support website.
Below information can also be used to do the inverse... Mac to PC.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302392
It explains how to do a backup to CD/DVD. When you have a large library, multiple DVD's will be used.
It tried it out with a portion of my lib, burned a backup with my PC, and imported it on my MacBook. Works great! All but last played information is copied over...
Even Podcast, Movies etc are taken into account, also music not residing within the iTunes folder. After the restore on Mac, everything is properly placed within the iTunes folder you assigned.
    Enjoy,
    Roger
