Copying iTunes to iPod

I just bought a new computer, a MacBook Pro, and I need to transfer my iTunes library using my iPod. I read article 300173 and follow all of the instructions. However, when it came time to drag the iTunes folder and drop it on my iPod in the 'my computer' window, I got an error message. It says "cannot copy files: cannot read from the source file or disk."
I don't know what to do from here. Why won't my iTunes folder copy to my iPod?

If you use automatic syncing, select the iPod in iTunes.  Toward the top, there is a bar of buttons, staring with Summary.  Click on Music next to Summary.  This is the iPod's Music screen, where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the iPod.
If you are currently using automatic syncing, the check box for Sync Music should already be checked.  That setting turns ON automatic syncing.  (If it's not currently checked, you are not currently using automatic syncing.)  Choose the option to sync Select playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Below that, there are lists for choosing what you want synced to the iPod.  Under Playlists, the playlists in your iTunes library are shown.  Select (checkmark) the ones you want on the iPod.
When you click Apply, the iPod's existing content is replaced by the content you selected on the iPod's Music screen.  So, if you selected playlists, the iPod will only have the songs on those playlists after syncing, along with the playlists themselves that you can use for playback (on the iPod).  Going forward, any changes you make (adding and/or removing songs) to those playlists (in your iTunes library) are synced to the iPod automatically, the next time it is connected (or click Sync if already connected).
NOTE:  You are not the original topic poster.  In the future, it would be best to create your own forum topic to ask your question.  You can do so going to the appropriate forum category.  For example (for this question), you would go here and click on the type of iPod you own

    Hello LeaMinovitch,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iTunes Store: Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1420
To authorize a computer, follow these steps:
    Open iTunes.
Choose Store > Authorize This Computer from the menu bar.
You may need to show the menu bar to see this option in Windows. In earlier versions of iTunes, you can access this option from the Advanced menu.
Enter your Apple ID and click Authorize.
If your Apple ID uses an expired MobileMe account, you can still authorize your computer.
In some cases, iTunes may ask you to authorize the computer again. iTunes should use the same authorization as before if the computer is in your list of authorized computers.
Learn what to do if iTunes repeatedly asks you to authorize when you try to play your content.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

  • Error message while copying from iTunes to iPod

My daughter's iPod shuffle (1st gen) was not charging so I updated it to the lastest software (1.1.5). While doing so, iTunes required an upgrade as well (7.5). Both are updated. But it is still not charging. That's my first problem.
I decided to see if it was a problem with my computer. So I tried using my other daughter's iPod. It was charging and playing music. While I was at it, she wanted to add new songs. For some reason I had difficulties so I updated her iPod software to 1.1.5 as well.
When I went to put songs on it from iTunes, I get an error message "<song name> was not copied to the iPod "<ipod name>" because it cannot be played on this iPod.
I now have an iPod that has no music on it. (Plus a second iPod that's not charging.) Both iPods are about 15 months old. They are shuffles (1st gen) and we have XP on our computer.
    Can anyone help.

Some formats that play in iTunes are not compatible with the 1st generation iPod shuffle, Aiff and Apple Lossless for instance. Apple Lossless is not supported on the 2nd generation shuffle: iPod shuffle: Compatible audio formats
I don't use a shuffle but it has a function that other iPods don't have, on-the-fly conversion, the option to "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC". You should check this out, this should save you converting your lossless files in iTunes. You can find details on pages 12 and 13 of the manual: iPod shuffle User Guide
Quote: "If this option is selected, songs encoded in AIFF or Apple Lossless format are
converted to 128 kbps when transferred to iPod shuffle (the song files in iTunes aren’t
affected). Otherwise, iPod shuffle doesn’t play songs encoded in those formats"

  • I got a new iPod nano 7th gen., but when I tried downloading a video from my iTunes library a message popped up that said: Some of the videos in your iTunes library cannot be copied to your iPod because they cannot be played on this iPod.

I got a new iPod nano 7th gen, but when i tried downloading a video from my iTunes library a message popped up that said: Soem of the videos in your iTunes library were not copied to yor iPod because they cannot be played on this iPod. What should I do?

I kept having a similar problem - 3 out of the 10 videos I had on iTunes wouldn't sync. They were in the right format and I KNEW they worked on my iPod because I'd RECORDED them on my iPod. I finally figured out what to do! Go to the movies in your iTunes library. Click on one that does not sync. Click on "Advanced" at the top of iTunes and choose "Create iPod or iPhone version". Once that's finished, be sure you delete the old version so you don't keep getting the error (or have 2 copies of the same video) and sync. This should eliminate the problem. At least it did for me!

  • ITunes 6.0.5 copying video to iPod regardless of settings

I'm having a problem with my video iPod and the latest (6.0.5) version of iTunes.
Regardless of my iPod settings within iTunes, the program insists on copying all of my video tracks to my iPod. Manually deleting them and re-updating as well as disabling copying of podcasts/video files in the iTunes preferences don't seem to have any effect. On the subsequent iPod update, the video files will be copied to the iPod again.
Any idea what's going on? I wasn't having this problem before the latest iTunes update.

I just created a movie in iMovie 10.0.5 and shared it to iTunes but I cannot copy to my iPod touch.  It says the movie was not copied because it cannot be played on this iPod. My iPod was bought in 2009 and has the latest iOS 4.2.1.  I also tried sharing in all the different resolutions but none of them worked.

  • 10 songs will not copy from iTunes to iPod.

I have been having a problem when syncing my iPod. At the end of the sync, a dialog box appears, saying 'some of the items in the iTunes library, including "song name", were not be copied to the iPod "iPod name" because they could not be found". In total there are 10 songs that I can not copy to my iPod, they were all purchases off Amazon Music, as I had a voucher for the site at that time. When I initially purchased the songs, they were copied to my iPod without a problem, it is only recently when syncing my iPod that this has occured. If anyone could explain to me how to fix this problem, I would be extremely grateful, thank you in advance!

    Hi, zoed0775.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
If an exclamation mark next to iTunes media in your library means that either the media is missing from the computer or iTunes is not directed to where the media is located.  Here is an article that will help you locate the missing media.  I have also included a list of icons in iTunes 11 as it will direct you to the best course of action.

  • Some songs do not copy from iTunes to iPod

This is very frustrating. I have a 5th Generation 60gig iPod. There are about 20,300 songs in my library, none of them from the iTunes store. All legal, all owned by me and I have the CDs to prove it. When I update the iPod all but about 4 or 5 songs copy over. The frustrating thing is there's no way to find out which songs are not copying over to the iPod, so I can't tell if there's a problem with them or what. AppleCare tells me the only way to find out is to visually compare the list on the iPod with the list in iTunes. I have 20,000 songs here and allegedly one of the most powerful computers you can get and I have to compare two nearly identical lists visually?? Oh, by the way I'm running 10.4.6 and the latest version of iTunes and the latest iPod update. This never happened with my 4th Generation iPod. Any thoughts at all of what to do would certainly be appreciated.
    Powerbook G4, iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Are you basing the few that don't get sent to your ipod on the file count? Could there be duplicates? I've noticed that there are some of my movies that don't get sent over but I usually get a warning that they aren't in a compatable format.
There is an option in either file or edit (can't remember exactly where, I'm at work) but you can filter to show all the duplicates. I've noticed that when I drag files over to be copied to my ipod and there are duplicates, it only does one.
After you find the culprits, another thing would be to export the file to your desktop. Delete it from iTunes then reimport it making sure of the file format.
    just a thought
