Welcome to the Apple Discussions
If you want the DVD to be playable in a domestic DVD player, then you'll have to make the DVD using iDVD. When you burn a DVD from iPhoto it's data storage rather than viewable on a TV.
Creating a Slideshow of your library in iDVD is quite straightforward: from the iDVD Help:
You can use the slideshow editor to create a slideshow using your iPhoto albums or images stored in other places on your computer.
Your DVD can have up to 9,801 images in one or more slideshows, depending on the amount of other content on the DVD.
To create a slideshow in iDVD:
Click Media to open the Media pane, then click Photos to display your iPhoto albums.
Drag an album to the DVD menu. A button is created that links to the images. The button has the name of your iPhoto album and automatically displays the first slide in the slideshow.
If you want to change the button label, select the button and type a new name.
Double-click the button to open the slideshow editor.
The slideshow editor shows thumbnails of the photos in the slideshow. Drag the slider to change the size of the thumbnails, so you can see more slides at once, or fewer slides with more detail.
Add, arrange, or delete slides from the slideshow to create the sequence you want.
To add other images, drag files or folders from the Finder to the slideshow editor.
To reorder the images, select the slides you want to move and drag them to a different position.
To delete an image, select it and choose Edit > Delete.
Click Settings and select the settings you want for the slideshow:
"Loop slideshow" makes the slideshow repeat continuously until the viewer moves to a different part of the DVD.
"Display navigation arrows" shows navigation arrows on the screen to indicate where the viewer is in the slideshow.
"Add image files to DVD-ROM" adds copies of the slideshow images to the DVD disc so viewers can download them to their computers.
"Show titles and comments" lets you add titles and comments to your slideshow images that are visible in the slideshow.
Click the Transition pop-up menu and choose a transition to smoothly move from one image to the next.
Click the Slide Duration pop-up menu and choose the length of time you want each slide to stay on the screen. Be sure to allow enough time for the transition you selected.
To let the viewer advance through the slideshow manually using a remote control, choose Manual.
Note: If you're adding a soundtrack, you don't need to set the slide duration.
To add a soundtrack, click Media to open the Media pane, then click Audio to find a song in your iTunes library or GarageBand that would make a nice background for the slideshow.
Drag the song or audio track from the Media pane, or from another location on your hard disk, and drop it in the audio well in the slideshow editor.
iDVD automatically adjusts the overall duration of the slides to match the length of the audio clip. The slide duration is changed to "Fit to Audio." You can change the duration if you want.
Drag the "Slideshow volume" slider to set the volume. You can check the volume when you preview the slideshow.

  • When I try to restore my iTunes library from DVD, iTunes stops copying the files after some minutes

On 2 of my 9 DVDs, iTunes stops copying and I can't do anything with iTunes anymore. I have to reboot my computer. So I'm not able to bring back all my files. Has anyone got help?

Thanks but I already did read all of the help notes, which aren't very helpful for this.  I did find out the problem- Apple.....they evidently changed one of the major upsides to their old software- being able to back up your entire library onto dvd's- so you can longer do that or restore from the dvds created from older versions of itunes.  I suspect greed is at play in that Apple now wants you to pay $24.95 per year to use a "cloud" service where they back it up for you.  I can buy a lifetime supply of back up dvds for one year's worth of cloud.  So I am now looking into other music software as I am Appled-out.  There is no reason for them to take away the back up portion of the software other than to sell you thrir cloud service.  As we have already given them a ton of money for 5 Ipods and a bunch of music, I think we have contributed enough.  Time to look to solutions outside of the Apple money tree.  But thank you for reading and replying.

  • I loaded a digital copy of a dvd which I bought to the itunes library.  It shows in the Library on the computer, but how do I get it on the Ipad?  Help!!!

Not sure if I am doing this correct.  I uploaded a digital copy of a DVD movie to the itunes library.  How do I get it to the Ipad?  Please help, I have been trying for over an hour.  Thank you.  Garry

Select the movie to sync (click in box next to the name) in the movies tab in iTunes while your iPad is connected to your computer, with iTunes running and then sync the movie to the iPad.
Make sure you are using the correct iTunes account when you sync as well and that you have authorized your computer.

  • How do i copy/burn my library onto dvd/cd?

Hi i am quite a computer novice so please speak in none technical terms. I would like to back up my itunes library onto a dvd or even several audio cds. My library is only 4GB and i had tried:
    1. to copy library into playlist and then use the icon to burn to data dvd. It went through all my songs but said the disk was blank at the end.
    2. Copy my library to several audio cds. Each cd holds approx 700MB therefore i pressumed that it would take 4 discs. However only a few songs copy onto the disc at a time.
Is it something simple that i am not doing.
Any help on both senarios would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    hi Jonathan!
hmmm. not precisely focussed on your specific question, but here is a good general resource on backing up:

  • How to import/copy songs from DVD storage to iTunes Library

My PB harddrive had a major failure resulting in total data loss. I have all my Itunes music copied to 5 DVDs (roughly 22g or 12 days of music). How do I get these back into my iTunes music library? I have tried:
    a) drag & drop copy from DVD (desktop folder) to harddrive/users/myid/music/iTunes/iTunes Music folder. This results in a transfer, but on opening iTunes, none of the music appears in the library. I tried "Advanced->Consolidate Library" but nothing happens; still no songs in the Library.
    b) drag & drop copy from DVD (desktop folder) to new desktop folder and then to consolidate library. Again nothing.
If I go to the folder and double click on any mp3 file, the song starts playing in iTunes, and is added to the library. BUT, it is impractical for me to click thru every song (>4000 songs).
    HELP

There are 2 ways to go:
#1 from itunes Menu - File choose "Add to library..." then select your DVD/tracks
#2 launch iTunes, drag+drop those tracks onto "Library" in iTunes' left column beneath "Source"

  • Can't add more than 1 file at a time to library from DVD... any ideas???

Have Mac and PC but on the PC side I'm unable to add multiple files (MPEG 4's) to the library from DVD. iTunes WILL always add the first tune that I have selected to the library but it disregards the other selections I've made. In other words... it only will add one tune at a time no matter how many I select.
I've tried copying them to HD and still the same problem. I've tried puttin them into a folder and adding the folder but still same problem.
I burned the originals MPEG 4's as data unto the DVD but I don't think that would effect things.
Any suggestions would be G-R-E-A-T-L-Y appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Error in burning iTunes library to DVD as back up

I'm keen to make a back up of my iTunes library onto DVD.
When I try to do this, having followed the instructions to the letter, the system chugs through, checks the playlist, tells me it is initiating the burning, then I get a message canceling the operation reading 'unknown error 4251'.
Now, I can't find anything relating to this error on the Apple website, however, there are other users with the same problem using other forums. The problem is though, there don't seem to be any answers resolving the problem.
Any help would be great, thanks.

Well....You do not absolutely need to Use iTunes for Backing up your Music. Any program that burns DVDs can burn music files as data disks.
iTunes can work fine for music files BUT: I prefer more control and completeness over my backup process. It is also very important to note that a large limitation of using iTunes to manage the backup is that the iTunes method does not maintain the two meta-data files (iTunes Library.itl & iTunes Music Library.xml) where your Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. are stored. See: What are the iTunes Library files?
If you are heavily invested in your Library data (Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings, Last Played, Date Added, etc.), it is critical that you also make and archive multiple backups of your ‘iTunes Library.itl’ file.
If your music is located under one common Folder (e.g.-‘iTunes’), then it is easiest to physically copy that folder and all its sub-folders in one simple process. It can be done quickly, and incrementally – several times a day, when necessary. In the case of any data loss, just re-copy your entire (or partial) music library back to wherever it was, placing it in the main Folder that the previous iTunes expected. Along with the .ITL meta-data file, this completes a full ‘restore’ of your music to the time of your last backup.
Use of a backup software program will greatly help. It will allow you to easily perform incremental backups of only the files that have changed. WinXP has such a facility built-in. I use a free program called FileSync ( http://www.fileware.com ). There are many out there. Some use Zipped files or proprietary formats, others use standard file formats. I like FileSync as it uses normal file formats that can be viewed/managed via any Windows program or utility.
Here's a list of possible ways to copy your music files from your main iTunes computer to another storage medium for backup purposes.
    1) Use an External Hard Drive to store the complete iTunes meta-data files and underlying Music Folder structure and songs from your main computer. They are quite cheap now, for their storage volume. This is my preferred main medium.
    2) If you have two computers:
2a) Connect them through a router
2b) Connect them using a Direct (w/Mac) or Crossover (PC/PC) Ethernet cable (See: http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3001.html)
2c) Connect them via a USB-to-USB Network Bridge. See: here as an example.
Copy the files and folders from one computer to the other. Use the second PC as your backup repository.
    3) Burn several DVDs (at 4.7+ GBs each) with the music data files and store them safely. Re-writable ones are good for backup purposes (if your DVD drive can manage these).
    4) Burn 6x more on CDs (at 700MB each) than in #3 above and store them safely in more space Re-writable ones are good for backup purposes (if your CD drive can manage these).
    5) Use a larger USB Flash drive (1GB – 4+GBs) to store the files only if you have a small amount ripped music or have multiple and/or jumbo USB drives at your disposal that will fit your music library.
    6) Use the second internal hard drive (if available) of your PC -- not optimum, as you really want to physically separate the storage of backups from the originals, but good as a tertiary storage device.
By keeping only one copy of your music (other than on the iPod), you are not truly 'backed-up' and are running a high risk of losing your music. Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer, then create and maintain two external sets.
You need at least three sets of your music:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
It is a good policy to backup all your important data. It is a very smart policy to back it up on more than one medium.
External hard drives now run less than $100 for 200-250GBs of storage. Very cheap backup insurance, indeed. See This Link

  • Restoring iPhoto Library from DVD

I having been backing up my iPhoto 5.0.4 library to DVD peridodcially using the Share command. The library is on 2 DVD's, is in the iPhoto Library format with other data files as well. If I want to restore the library to one of my Macs, how is this done so that I don't wind up with an entire library of grayed-out photos?
    Thanks -

On the Mac you want to restore the library to open iPhoto and create a new library (or use the existing one if that's what you want to do) and insert the DVD. The DVD will show up as a disc icon directly under the main library icon in the Source window. You then expand the disc icon and drag the roll icons onto the library icon. This will copy the rolls into the library on the Mac. If you burned by album you can select them and drag to the Source window (I believe that will copy them as an album - not sure because I haven't backup via albums). In either case you'll be able to copy your photos into the "new" library and maintain the organizational information. However, you may not retain the keyword correlation as that's been a reported bug in burning to disc with V5.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Burning a large library to DVDs

After some lost photo issues this week, I'm trying to create yet another copy of most of our photos in iPhoto. The issue is the library is huge (almost 60K photos) and so is too large for a single disk.
I am planning to walk thru the events, adding 4.7GB worth and burning as I go. Is this a method which makes sense?
I burned the first one, and when I looked at it, it doesn't seem to retain the events that were there in the library. Will I get any of the albums and things if I follow this method?
I'm hoping this is merely a disaster backup, but after this week, that doesn't seem impossible.
Thanks to all willing to share their expertise!

    derring do
My post was a response to Philreeth.
    FWIW:
I used to back up my library to DVD every autumn. But I gave that up a couple of years ago. Why? I felt it was pointless. Optical Media corrodes and gets damaged. I think even the best quality really only claim a life of maybe 20 years or so. Guess what, in 20 years (in 10?) our Macs won't have optical drives. The CD and DVD are rapidly going the way of the Floppy Disk and the vinyl LP.
So, my solution, is multiple back ups on different HDs and in different locations.
    Backing Up
My Library lives on my iMac.It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day.
These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected. For this job I use DejaVu because it makes a simple back up that is clear and can be tested easily without doing an full restore.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. Personally I use SmugMug but there are many options including flickr. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size, or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you will need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a restore.
This system should protect me against
hardware failure - how likely is it that 5 HDs will go down at once? And even if they do I have the online
    one...;
Theft or Fire - there are three offsite back ups...
And as the back ups are on HDs they are easy to update, easy to recover from and - as technology advances - should be easy to manipulate to whatever comes next down the line.
    Fingers Crossed...

  • Backing up iPhoto Library to DVDs

    Hello,
I'm planning to back up all my files and reinstall Leopard. However, I'm a little worried about backing up my iPhoto library (~22 GB). I don't have an external hard drive so burning to disc is the only way.
I want to retain _all my events and both original and modified photos_. Which method is right for me: using iPhoto's built-in Burn feature or manually copying sections of the iPhoto Library to DVD?
    Thanks!

    Chris:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Be sure you don't select much more than 4GB of photos as reported by iPhoto in the Information pane at the bottom of the left window in iPhoto to burn because iPhoto adds a lot of overhead, i.e. the modified and thumbnail files, and various database files that can bloat each burn. You don't want to get into the burn and get the not enough space message. You can see this
Since all of the disks that get created have the same disk name, keep a written record of the contents of each disk and number the disks with a pen so it will be easier to locate what you need.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Backing up iphoto library to dvd when size is enormous

this community has helped me every time and once again i am stuck and have searched for the answer with no luck yet.
i have a 20GB library and have already copied it to an external HD and switched my default library position to free up space internally. i manage the two different locations with iphoto library manager.
i would like a hard copy of the library in case (knock on wood) my external HD would crash. too many memories lost. but i have yet to discover a way to do this and am assuming i am overlooking something. how can i burn that massive library to dvds???
    thanks for listening.

so i was entirely unaware of backup. i figured it was something extra and had not yet explored it. i have now downloaded backup and have a few more questions about this process.
my iphoto and itunes folders are on my external hd, yet they are both set as the default library for both programs. i have not yet seen a quickpick or pre-installed plan that will back those up (only available for home folder). so i looked through the custom settings as well and was unable to determine how to back up my external hd. it seems everything is for my mac hd. my external hd never appeared appeared on the desktop as an option to backup.
any thoughts because i would love to back up the folders and files to dvds and then schedule regular backups as well. thanks again for the back up info, and any further help.

  • Backing up iPhoto Library to DVD: too big

I want to back up my iPhoto library to DVD so I can have an "off-site" copy. However it is 17GB, and won't fit on one DVD. What's the best way to back up to multiple DVD's? I do have Toast 8, if that's the best way.
    Thanks!

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create a 20GB disk image, copy the entire library to it, compress it, and then use this tool to segment the image. You need all the segments to recover anything.

  • HT1539 Digital copy transferred from DVD has no audio played back via Apple TV

I have successfully redeemed and transferred the digital copy from a DVD into iTunes. Both the video and audio play perfectly when I play the .m4v file using QuickTime Player. The video plays perfectly, but there is no audio when the movie plays via my Apple TV. My TV is not muted. Every other file in my iTunes library, including movies and music and no matter the source, play back with audio just fine. The only file that doesn't play with audio via my Apple TV is this digital copy that I redeemed and transferred into iTunes. Any idea what my problem might be?

Apple Support Communities solved my problem thanks to member Winston Churchill.
My digital copy of Skyfall transferred from the DVD into iTunes and viewed via my Apple TV on my HD TV would display the video with great clarity and resolution but the audio would not play.
Per his suggestion I visited the Settings icon on my Apple TV. I changed the "audio out" setting from "auto" to "16-bit" and this fixed my problem.
Thanks to Mr. Churchill for solving my problem with his brilliant suggestion.

  • Backup photo library on dvds

First time Mac owner here so forgive my Macnoobness
I want to back up my photo library onto dvds. I have close to 6000 images and it will require more than one dvd. What I am looking for is to burn my photo library without having to select my images in "groups" that will fit on each dvd. Basically, select the burn option and let the computer burn all images that can fit on a single dvd, then prompt me to insert a second dvd, etc. Can this be done?

    Gary:
There is an application that might be able to take your Originals folder and burn it across multiple disks. It's called Disco. I suppose you would open the library package and drag the Originals folder onto the application and let it do it's stuff, adding new DVD's when asked for. I've not used it so can't comment on it's effectiveness.
You would not want to burn the entire library as that would include a lot of files that you're not interested in, i.e. database files, thumbnail files and the modified files. You, I'm assuming, just want to backup the original files.
NOTE: I'm not sure it will work with DVDs.
But the .Mac backup will work with both CDs and DVDs (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61791)
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current.
