Copying lots of music files at once

Sorry if this has been asked before....but I'm trying to move around vast numbers of music files between areas on my MacBook Pro and if I try and do too many, it won't let me.
For example, I have 2 users set up on my laptop. One is the main user and the other is for a spare iTunes so I don't have to delete files when the iPod gets full - I can just move them about. So I occasionally move a number of files between the 2 by copying from one iTunes to a drop box and then going to the spare user then copying them again to the iTunes for that user. Sometimes it'll let me do 1000 or more songs, but other times it gets stuck at around 50 or less.
AND I'm trying to back up ALL of my music files to an external drive. Obviously I want to just drag and drop as many as I can (i.e. 1000s!) and leave it running while I do other stuff, but again it won't let me.
Any ideas? Is there a limit to how many files /GB you can move? It's weird as when I first got the MacBook Pro I backed up the music straight away to a spare drive and I'm sure it worked ok without having to do a couple of hundred at a time or something like that.
Please let me know if you can help - thanks!

Thanks Matt.

"First of all, I have to say that your method of managing iTunes seems a little complex. Wouldn't it also work just to manually manage iTunes (instead of automatic updates) and then you can move whatever songs you like to the iPod?"
I prefer to sync and not work manually. Easier for me to do than manage songs individually. I have a full 80GB iPod - manually managing isn't something I really want to do. I've got about 85GB set up in the spare user account also. The spare user is basically there for music I doubt I'll want to listen to for ages but don't want to delete. If I had 150GB in the same iTunes and was manually picking out tracks, it would kill me! I know that works for other people, but not for me.
"When you move files around, are you moving a single top-level folder, or multiple files or top-level folders? I've found that moving a single folder (that may itself contain hundreds of items) is more efficient than trying to multiple-select and move the enclosed items."
I'm trying to move multiple files from iTunes to a single folder. I hear what you're saying, but basically I have a playlist of about 1,200 songs that I want to move from my MacBook to the external spare drive, and also want to move about 500 songs from one iTunes to another. I know what you mean, but I need to be able to copy from from iTunes to a separate folder all at once.
Maybe if I was able to export playlists from one iTunes to another that would be easier? I used to do that on a PC and it worked fine, but can't get it to work on this Mac.
Anyway, I don't understand why it's not an easy task to simply copy a number of files from one location to another, regardless of amount or size....shouldn't be THAT hard should it?
To do what you suggest, I'd need to have moved the files into a top level folder in the first place and that's what I'm struggling with I think....any ideas?
Thanks for getting back to me - appreciated!

  • I have copied over my music file to a new computer and the music shows on itunes but wont play. When I track where the song is located it is reading the wrong information. How do I change this as Edit Preferences has the right location

I have copied over my music files to a new computer and the music shows on itunes but wont play. When I track where the song is located it is reading the wrong information. How do I change this as Edit>Preferences has the right location?

Select one of the tracks with a broken link, press ctrl-i to Get Info. Say No when iTunes asks if you would like to locate the track, then look at the Summary tab for the location expects to find the file in.
Now try to locate the file in question. The two locations should give a clue as to what to do next.
Here is an example with a file I've deliberately moved from the new layout to the old pre-iTunes 9 layout.
This means iTunes is expecting to find the file at:
    D:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\a-ha\Take On Me\01 Take On Me.mp3
but it isn't there because I've moved it to:
    D:\iTunes\iTunes Media\a-ha\Take On Me\01 Take On Me.mp3
which is where it would have lived back in iTunes 8 (though the media folder would have been called iTunes Music back then as well).
If you can provide the expected and actual locations of a broken track I should be able to suggest the easiest way to resolve things.

Yeah, many of us would love it! But no such thing exists, at least not that us mere mortals can find.
There might be another variable that I don't understand right now but at least it is consistent.
Could it be something funky in the name of one of the folders? Or could the folder object itself be corrupt? Or have some odd extended attribute?

  • IPad-iPhone-Lots Of Music Files

    Hi!
    I have an iPad2, 32GB, and an iPhone4S, 64GB, running iOS5. I have lots of m4a Music files.
What is the best way to keep music files in iPhone only, not to be copied to iPad? So, iPad will not run out of space too soon too fast?
    Thanks!
    m

Don't sync music on the iPad, and in settings / store, turn off automatic downloads.

  • Is a copy of .xml file on the iPod too? If so, how can I copy ONLY the .xml file to my computer and NOT have to copy all my music files too?

I had to re-load my OS (Windows XP Pro) from a HD snapshot via Acronis True Image Server. I save my OS on my C: drive and all my data files on my D: drive.  So when I re-loaded my OS, I still have all of my music files intact.
I have re-loaded the OS before and had to re-create iTunes library which I did by doing the follwing:
    1. cut & paste .xml file in iTunes folder to desktop
    2. delete .itl file in iTunes folder
    3. import .xml file through iTunes  file>library>iport playlist
    4. navigate to .xml file on desktop and import
This worked last time I re-loaded my OS but not this time for some reason.
So I'm wondering if there is a copy of the .xml file on the iPod itself in the iPod_Control folder that I can copy and paste to my comuter desktop and import via the above steps?
I have seen all kinds of solutions on the web that include copying the music files from the iPod to the computer.  I don't need to do that.  I have the music files.  I just need the .xml file so iTunes can talk to my iPod (5th Generation - 30G).

Backup your music library, that is the only way to ensure it does not go missing through theft, damage, operator error, machine breaks, upgrades go wrong, operator goes wrong .........

  • Trouble moving lots of music files

    Hi,
First of all, thank you for reading my post. Here's what I wanted to do: In the music folder of iTunes, every music files are classified in their respective Artist/Album folders. I wanted to take all those files and move them to one folder. Here's what I used:
    find . -name '*.mp3' -exec mv {} ./Music \;
It created a single file named Music with all my files. First of all, is there a way to recover all those files or are they lost? Second, what was the command I should have used instead of this.
Thank you again for the help
    iBook G4 (12)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Francis,
    > It created a single file named Music with all my files.
Ouch! I'm afraid that I don't think that's possible. Did a directory named "Music" already exist in the working directory at the time you executed the command? If it did exist then the command should have done exactly what you wanted; it should have moved all of the MP3 files into that directory, barring name collision.
If the directory did not exist then the mv command would have no way of knowing that you meant it to be a directory. The first MP3 found would have been renamed to "Music" and moved to the current working directory. However, all of the other mv commands probably did the same and each one overwrote the previous one. Therefore I expect that your "Music" file is actually just the last MP3 file found and the rest have been lost. I'm afraid that you'll have to restore from backup.
I realize that it's closing the barn door after the horses are out but the mv command provides -i and -n options to avoid this problem.

  • How can I avoid additional copy of all Music files?

    Hi Everybody....
I just purchased a new iPod 80Gb... I hope to transfer all my music and audiobooks from computers, HDD's and CD's to it. That is about 30-40Gb. Unfortunately I discovered I can not do this without iTunes or other 3rd party software and ADDITIONAL COPY of ALL FILES on computer!!! I wand to have files on my iPod and backup on DVD's... That is all. I can always play music from my iPod if I need.
Can someone help me how can I do it? How to have Just ONE copy of all my music and ONLY on iPOD in the way to be able to edit, add, delete, etc. the contents?
    Thank you in advance!
    Alex

You can't load the iPod without putting the music into iTunes first however once the iPod is loaded you can change the update option of your iPod to "manually manage music and videos" and delete the songs from the computer. Your iPod will not sync with iTunes in this mode, you can get details here: Managing content manually on iPod
For safe keeping I suggest you keep a backup of all your music on an external drive. Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • How can i copy and past music files, Images and Videos to my Apple Iphone?

I have a new Iphone 4 mobile phone. Any one can  help me  for how can i stote music, videos and images files in My Iphone?
When i search on internet i saw icloud and itunes. Is there any net connection requered to use icloud or itunes? Without net connect how can i store my files in my apple phone?

    Prabakhar,
First, please verify that you mean CDDA and not CDA.  CDA is not an audio format.
CDDA is pretty much the "raw" format of an audio CD.  It is extremely unusual to have it as a separate file.  If you still have the original CD that it came from, re-rip the CD using this document.  (Edit added.  I meant to add the link to this document:  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12486  )
Otherwise, a web search will turn up converters that can process a CDDA file, although I have not used them.

  • Automatic copy music files in music folder to the data disk storage

I got the shuffle as a Christmas present last year. It was working fine until today. Once I plugged to shuffle onto my laptop, it automatically copy all the music files in my music folder (my hardisk) to my shuffle. It copies them to my data disk storage, as if I want to back up them or transfer them to another computer. I don't know where to change the setting, as it used to work fine and I didn't change anything since then.
Anyone has any idea how to fix this? Basically now I can't use my shuffle as the memory stick.

Yes it is possible, and in fact quite easy.
Insert the flash drive in your computer and open it so it looks like a window.  Over in iTunes, highlight the tracks you want (or CTRL+A to get a whole playlist) and drag to the open flash drive window.
If you normally run iTunes in full-scree mode, make it smaller so that you can do the drag.

  • Problems during copying music files from iTunes 10.6.1 to iPhone

    1st problem
In new iTunes 10.6.1 on my MBP when copying music on iPhone if during copying add additional musical files in queue, copying of files from the previous queue stops. In the previous iTunes version of such problem didn't arise. Whether there is a solution of this problem?
    2nd problem
In older version of iTunes i could adding new music files to my iphone with drag and drop from Finder. Now i must add files in iTunes library and then from library drag and drop files to iphone. How to solve this problem?

You would have to purchase 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and install it, assuming your computer is compatible.

  • Music files / itunes conversion - making it simple!

    Hello
I am looking for some general and probably simple help with the file formats of my music.
I have a vast amount of music which is stored on my computer hard drive, some of which is stored in m4p format and some in wma and some in mp3? Some of my music files are stored twice and some are in different formats. When i convert my music to itunes i find that most of the music converts 3, 4 and sometimes 5 times? I dont understand this!
I really want to have a simple system for storing and converting music. If my music is to be stored on my hard drive i just want each music file stored once and in the same file format so when i search my music it is easy to find the artist i want. With itunes i just want the music to convert once. This all may seem very simple to someone but to me i feel like i have a complicated system and i just want to tidy it up and make it easy to manage. Can anybody help! Thank you.

I really do not understand what all the different formats are so even trying to talk about this is difficult but i will try. I have all my music stored on my hard drive but it seems to be in different places. When i click on my music i have a number of artists listed with their music. I then have a folder in this section called itunes which has also got a big list of artists in it which seems strange. So i have one big music folder with all the music in plus an itunes folder with a lot of the music in also. Do i need to just copy all of the music to the itunes folder on my hard drive?
When i use itunes to organise my music i click on file and then add folder to library and then send all the music in the folder 'my music' to itunes. Obvisouly i have just done this once at the start. When i add the folder a pop up comes with - some files are not in the itunes format, do you want itunes to convert them for you. When itunes has finished adding and converting i have 4 or 5 copies of each track in the itunes library??? I then have to use the delete duplicate option to get rid of tracks. When i then take my music to other computers and want to copy it into itunes it does the same so it seems to be a problem with the files on the hard drive.
Ideally, i would like one copy of each music file in my hard drive plus when i copy to itunes it just copies once. Also when i take this music to a seperate computer i want it to copy into the itunes library once.
If you require further info then no problem
I appreciate your time and help
    Thank you.

  • Help! I can't properly sync my 5530 music files us...

I need help guys. I just bought a Nokia 5530 Xpress Music and tried out syncing my phone's files using Ovi Suite so I can easily retrieve them if ever they get deleted when I update my phone's firmware. When I synced my files, everything else worked fine except for the music files and these are the following problems I encountered:
Ovi Suite did not only copy my phone's music files to my pc, it also copied all the music files of my pc to my phone at the same time. This shouldn't happen right? Because I'm only trying to sync my phone's files to my computer, and not transfer files from my computer to my phone so it should only copy all the songs in my 5530 to Ovi Suite.
After synchronization, I noticed that Ovi Suite created a different folder in my phone's memory card to store all the music files instead of using the designated folder where I save all my phone's songs.
When I tried to play my songs using the music player of 5530, it didn't work. An error message appeared which said, "Unable to play selection. Operation cancelled." And all my music files appear to have a small yellow triangle icon with an exclamation point beside the title which I think signifies that all the songs with this icon can't be played using the Music Player of 5530.
*Note: When I accessed my songs through file manager, I had no problems. I was able to open and play them all.
All my songs have album arts but they don't appear in my phone when I open them. Whether I access them through File Manager or Music Player the problem is still the same, no album art appears.
Is there a way where I can assign a specific folder in my computer which the Ovi Suite should only access for the music files it should sync with my phone? I have a lot of songs in my pc but I don't want all of them to be copied to my phone so I have a separate folder where I keep the songs that I put in my mobile. How do I set Ovi Suite to just access this folder for music syncing?

I'm currently having the same problem and it's driving me mad! I bought an N 5530 last month and cannot get my songs to play through the device's media player - same message "Unable to play selected. Operation cancelled"
Originally I had just copied my songs to the memory card via a card reader -- it didn't work -- the songs didn't even show up in the media player, only file manager. (at least I had them in a decent file name structure to play them through file manager).
I deleted my songs from there and tried using Ovi Suite instead. The songs now show up in media player but I get that same error. Plus it created some stupid "Drag 1" "Drag 2" folders so I can't even find my songs properly in file manager now!!
I've done all the software and firmware updates (along with a dozen bloody restarts).. Why the hell isn't this just a simple drag and drop?
    Need help Nokia.

  • Last iTunes update 10.2.2.12 deleted all music files and all artwork

Within the last month I got a notice to upgrade Apple iTunes and Quicktime software which I did not thinking anything about it.  I have used myiPod since then but not in iTunes at all and no synching.  I have about 225 CD's loaded in iTunes plus some other music from Home Sharing that my son/daughter bought with our account in the iTunes store.  I recently got a new double CD requested for my birthday and decided to load it into iTunes and on my computer.  It had problems automatically recognizing the CD so I checked all the settings and they were correct rebooted my computer and one CD loaded not the other and had to reboot again to get the second to load.  But also I noticed ALL ALBUM ARTWORK was gone.  Both the album artwork I got from Apple and the Album artwork I loaded (the bulk of my CD's are older CD's so the Apple iTunes store does not have the artwork typically) was missing.  I thought that was a little odd but iTunes has done this before after updates but usually ONLY with the album artwork I loaded being missing.  In any case I tried Get Artwork via the iTunes sote and got error messages that Album artwork could not load.  I also then tried to load the artwork manually and iTunes music library rejected it.  Then I tried to play a song listed.  It said the song is not there.  Now all of my music is listed in my iTunes library, but apparently NONE of it is actually there.  I go to where iTuens Music Library and sure enough only the last 4 CD's are there.  Apparently the last Apple Update deleted all the music files, and all the artwork with it, yet still lists them in iTunes but they are nowhere to be found.  Before I go into my backup files on an external hard drive, it appears others are having this issue too, and I am wondering if anyone has actually got a simple fix from Apple or not.  .

Follow up - I could not locate any of the files on my "c" drive of my laptop.  Realizing that I am gonna probably have to reload everything from my external hard drive backup I went ahead and just started the process.  I uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes software, which turned out to NOT be required at all as when I reopened iTunes all of the music files were again listed just as before but none of them were actually there or the artwork.  I then copied all the music files/folders over into the iTunes music folder and about 90% of them then showed up with about 98% of the artwork.  The other 10% just had to be matched up as the music was there but iTunes was not looking in the right location for it now, most likely different folder names.  So after about 6 hours I am back to having everything back on the computer and reorganized again.  I am now going to back up again (in multiple locations - 2 hard drives and I may add a flash drive backup too) and then do the inevitable scary Apple sync.  I find it funny that with other company's software that syncs, it actually syncs, where Apple sync software seems to look for items to delete from one source or the other during its sync. They really should rename it because it is not a true "sync".  In any case I was happy and surprised to find that about 98% of the artwork came through with the music which never used to happen in the past, so that saved a lot of time to say the least.  To anyone who ever does anything with Apple or Windows software updates, all I can say from years of experience now is backup, backup, backup, and backup prior to updating.

  • Importing just music FILES from PC to Mac

    Hi,
Just bought my wife a mac and want to transfer her music files from the PC to the Mac. The PC does NOT have itunes running anymore. Let's just say the itunes, at least on the PC, does some rather dumb things. Anyhow, itunes on the PC is dead. Playlists and such are all gone. All I want to do is transfer the files. Some are 128kb purchased from itunes. Some are WAV files ripped from CDs. I don't want itunes to convert the files in any way whatsoever. I just want to copy them into an appropriate folder and have itunes find them.
What would happen is I copied all the sub-folders and files from her "iTunes Music" folder into the "iTunes Media" folder on the mac?
Any advice for a weary soul who is trying ever so hard to keep and open mind about the virtues of itunes?
    Thanks!

That worked!..... Well, at least so far. I was able to copy all the music files over. However, I'm not able to delete the "Not Added" folder that was created in "Automatically Add to iTunes" when I unsuccessfully tried to copy before. It contains several folders named by the date and time. In those folders are some album art jpegs and system.ini files. When I try to delete anything I just hear the classic mac "beep", but no other info is provided.
Any idea how I might delete these? I don't want start itunes if it's going to automatically load garbage into the library.
    Thanks!!!!

  • How can i make sure all of the files in my music file are on my itunes??

I copied all of my itunes music via usb drive (crappy process) onto my mac in my music folder.. but it too several times due to the small size of the usb drive.. anyways..
When you add music to your music folder.. it doesn't go onto your itunes playlist until you choose that specific song..
can itunes perform a search to make sure you have a copy of every music file on your itunes?

iTunes menu File -> Add to library and select the \Music\iTunes\iTunes music\ folder.
FYI: If you are using iTunes 9, go to \Music\iTunes\iTunes media\ folder.
Make an alias on the desktop of the *Automatically add to iTunes* folder. Then drag songs to the is folder and they will automatically get added to iTunes and moved to the correct folder.
